DORIS JEAN MICHELS

Doris Jean Michels passed away Monday, February 24, 2014.

She was born January 10, 1925 in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She was the daughter of Bert and Inger (Anderson) Weland. She lived her youth in Eagle Grove where she graduated from high school.

She was united in marriage to Edward Henry Michels of Clarion, Iowa on April 15, 1944. They farmed near Clarion for many years. Edward passed away January 2, 1982. Doris then moved into Clarion, and in 2002 she moved to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon, Iowa.

Doris was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sheldon. She participated in a sewing group, and enjoyed making quilts, some of which were donated to the hospital for families of stillborn babies. She formerly attended St. John’s Catholic Church Doris Jean Michels in Clarion where she was a member of St. Ann’s Circle. Doris was loving, spirited and devoted to her family. She had a sharp sense of humor. She was a woman of deep faith and strong will evidenced by overcoming lymphoma in 2002. Doris was a gifted seamstress who enjoyed sewing for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an enthusiastic collector of Precious Moments, and she loved watching sports.

She passed away Monday February 24, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Those left to cherish her memory include 3 sons: Steven (Janet) Michels Altoona, IA, Gary (Rita) Michels of Ft. Collins CO, Denny (Malinda) Michels of Sheldon, IA; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, parents, and 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon. Father Allan Reicks officiated the service. He was assisted by Dean Ray Portz. Interment was in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Clarion. Interment services were officiated by Father Nils Hernandez.

Donald Keith Flurer

Memorial services for Donald Keith Flurer will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Ukiah Bible Church, Pastor Richard Oliver officiating.

Born April 28, 1932 in Clarion, Iowa, Donald was an Aerospace Engineer at McDonald Douglas in Long Beach, CA working with DC10’s. He has resided in the Ukiah area for the past 24 years. He loved to travel until his health deteriorated.

Donald is survived by his wife of 33 years Vannatta Flurer, son Randy Flurer, step-daughter Sherry Parmenter, sisters Sally and Joyce, granddaughter Erika Hofkenscheid, step-granddaughters Suzuanne Foster, Kristina Parmenter, Melody Witt and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Iona and by his daughter Melinda Musich. Eversole Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

 
DON RINK

Don Rink, 76, of Clarion, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion. Memorial services will be held privately for the family.

Donovan Ray Rink was born May 16, 1937 in rural Belmond to Pete and Gail (Smith) Rink. The family moved to Clarion and Don attended St. John’s Catholic school and graduated from Clarion High School. Upon graduation, Don attended barber college in Sioux City and began his career as a barber in 1956 working with Clark Holthaus.

He worked in Estherville for a time and worked with Russ Melhus for 6 years and later with Dick Simmons for 8 years before opening his own shop. Don retired in 2007 after more than 51 years. Don was united in marriage to Diane Evans on September 3, 1966 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clarion. The couple made their home in Clarion where they raised their 2 daughters.

Don was an avid sports fan. He wrote Clarion football and wrestling articles for the Clarion paper, coached midget league baseball in Clarion for years and served as a high school girls softball umpire. He participated in slow pitch softball leagues and played in numerous local area golf tournaments. Don loved bowling and played in the state bowling tournament several times. He also enjoyed playing 3-handed pinochle and pool.

Don attended the NCAA Wrestling National Championships several times with a group of friends from the area which was something he looked forward to each year. Don and Diane shared similar interests and they spent much of their time together bowling, golfing, or watching various sporting events on television. He was a huge Iowa Hawkeyes fan. They also enjoyed attending their girls’ sporting events, and taking them to major league baseball games and on fishing trips in their youth.

Don is survived by his wife, Diane Rink of Clarion; daughters Rhonda (Dan) Skinner and their children Sydney, Grant, Laben and Holden of Spokane, Washington and Nancy (Chad) Olson and their children Maddie, Zane and Emi of St. Charles, Iowa; brothers Bob (Val) Rink of Phoenix, Arizona and Tom Rink of Scranton, Iowa; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Dick Rink and Bill Rink.

Lynn Dallas Gaulke

Lynn Dallas Gaulke, age 74, a long-time resident of Nevada, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Committal services was at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Morgan Cemetery, Dows, Iowa. Visitation was held at Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Condolences may be sent online to www.chetryanmortuary.com.

Lynn Gaulke was born to Fay and Verna (Larsen) Gaulke on December 6, 1939, in Dows, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Dows and graduated from Dows High School in 1959. Lynn went on to study auto mechanics at the U.S. Trade School in Kansas City, Missouri. He married Judy Nelsen in 1959. To that 13-year union were born two children, a son, Bennett, and a daughter, Natalie. In October of 1974, Lynn married Lillian (DeJaegher) Wightman and adopted her young daughter, Jill. Lynn worked as an auto mechanic Lynn Dallas Gaulke for both the Ford and Chevrolet garages in Nevada for 15 years. In 1977, he acquired his own business, Lynn’s Car Wash, in Ames, Iowa, which he operated for over 30 years prior to his retirement. Lynn was enlisted in the Iowa National Guard from 1958 until 1964, earning the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion, Memorial Lutheran Church, and Golden K Kiwanis. He was also a member of the Iowa Car Wash Association, serving as president for a year. Lynn’s interests and hobbies included flying his own plane, collecting and fixing antique clocks, observing wildlife and working on his acreage south of Nevada. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, RV trips, and attending ISU basketball games. He especially cherished family gatherings, watching grandchildren’s extracurricular events, and special fishing trips to Canada.

Lynn is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lillian; three children, Bennett (Debra) Gaulke of Des Moines, Natalie (Anthony) McBride of Clive, and Jill (Scott) Harlan of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Nathan (Rachelle) Gaulke, Lauren Gaulke, Logan (Kindra) Gaulke, Mark (Annaliesa) McBride, Jeff (Nicole) McBride, Meghan McBride, Colin McBride, Cameron Harlan, and Alexis Harlan; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Jason Gaulke, and Savannah and Jacob McBride; two brothers, Roger Gaulke of Dows, and Lowell (Karen) Gaulke of Mount Pleasant; and many relatives and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Karen Gaulke; and a sister-in-law, Ardith Gaulke.

George “Geody” Mechem

George “Geody” Mechem, 81, of Clarion passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial services for Geody Mechem were held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at First United Methodist Church, 201 3rd Avenue North East in Clarion with Pastor Don Morrison officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation was held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion and continued one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

George “Geody” Mechem was born on a farm southeast of Clarion, Iowa on December 15, 1932 to Lewis and Vernice (Allen) Mechem. He was one of eight children and always proud of his large family. He attended the Clarion public schools and graduated in May of 1951. While in school he participated and enjoyed all the sports programs and his favorites were football and track. As a youngster growing up, he and his brothers and sisters enjoyed the luxury of having two ponies to ride and pull a two-wheeled cart. Geody often made his spending money by hauling peoples’ trash and junk to the city dump which at that time was on the west edge of town. He also spent much of his time during the summers at the Clarion swimming pool, hanging out with friends and spending time with Roger Groves, the pool manager and head coach of football, basketball and track for both junior high and George “Geody” Mechem high school programs. He had a great bond with Coach Groves and often commented that while growing up he spent more time with Coach Groves than with his own parents. In football, he played left halfback, called the plays and kicked extra points. Following high school he was employed at Cavanaugh Rexal Drug. From 1963 to 1994, Geody worked at Brenton Bank, serving as the bank President for 17 years. He enjoyed being involved in community activities and was an active member of the Clarion Jaycees, Lions Club, Clarion Recreation Board, the Chamber of Commerce, Development Commission, Clarmond Country Club and the First United Methodist Church, serving as board member and President of each group at least once. While working for the Brentons, he attended numerous banking schools and graduated from the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, WI. After leaving the bank in 1994 he continued to be active in the community by serving on committees for the Development Commission and working in real estate sales. He loved to play golf and once placed as high as 5th in the club tournament. Another golf event he thoroughly enjoyed was the Memorial Day weekend match play tournament in Albert Lea, Minnesota, one year winning first place in the 1st flight. In later years he enjoyed playing on the Over 50’s tour in North Central Iowa. Geody was married to his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Adams, in 1950 and was the proud parent of two children, Trudy and Larry.

Geody is survived by his wife, Marilyn, daughter Trudy and husband Joe O’Cleary of Longmont, Colorado, son Larry of Folsom, California 3 grandchildren, Evin O’Cleary, Nicole Mechem and Brian Mechem, 3 brothers, Allen, John and Paul, and 3 sisters, Meri Carlson, Marge Stofferan and Ruth Bair and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Geody was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David, and his daughter-in-law Liz.

BETTY JOHNSON

Betty Johnson, age 84 of Iowa Falls, died on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.

Memorial services were held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the First Congregational U.C.C in Iowa Falls with burial at a later date.

Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean Johnson was born on October 10, 1929 in Iowa Falls to Ernie and Josephine (Evans) LaRue. Betty attended college at Cedar Falls and Drake. Her first teaching job was in Latimer. Her next teaching position was at Dows teaching kindergarten. She finished her teaching years at Garner-Hayfield. She taught school for 37 years before she retired. During that time she started the pre first program at the Garner Hayfield school. Betty was also nominated for Iowa teacher of the year. She took pride in her teaching and enjoyed each and every student.

Betty is survived by her son Mike (Janet) Schroeder of Dows; her daughter Linda Banks of Glencoe, Minn.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and her sister JoAnn (Lee) Blanchard of Nevada, IA.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents (Josephine and Ernie), one sister (Mary (Carl) Rassmuesen), One brother (Maclyn (Jan) LaRue), and three husbands: Walter Schroeder of Dows (father of Michael and Linda), Gordon Greiman of Garner, and Robert Johnson of Iowa Falls.


BEN L URBAN

Ben L. Urban, 78, of Clarion passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Funeral services for Ben Urban were held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 1:30 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church, 420 1st Street North West in Clarion with Pastor Ron Nelson officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion. Visitation was held on Friday, March 14, 2014, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion and continued one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.

Benjamin Lee Urban was born on November 19, 1935 to Chris and Ben L. Urban Johanna Urban in Calumet, Iowa. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1954, and then attended Morningside College in Sioux City.

Ben married Aurel Englert on June 23, 1956, and to this union, two sons were born, Mark and Jeff. After working various jobs, Ben served in the Army in Washington State, and also worked in Cherokee at the District Patrol office as a clerk. He attended Patrol school in Des Moines, and began duty as an Iowa Highway Patrol Officer in Clarion in April 1959. He served his entire Patrol career in Clarion, where he retired in June 1991. Ben’s main passion was flying. He owned his own airplane, and enjoyed flying with Aurie to fly-in airport breakfasts. Ben also enjoyed golf, camping, vacations with his family, taking photos, and was a member of the Masons, the American Legion, and First Lutheran Church in Clarion.

Ben is survived by his wife, Aurel; his two sons, Mark Urban of Denver, Colorado, and Jeff (Molly) Urban of Tucson, Arizona, and their children Haley and Jared.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents.

Bernard E. Russell


Bernard E. Russell, age 85, of Dows, passed away Monday March 17, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Memorial services for Bernard E. Russell was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 21, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Dows. Pastor Ron Nelson officiated. Burial took place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Visitation for Bernard E. Russell was held Thursday March 20, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Dows and continued one hour prior to services on Friday. Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows was in charge of arrangements.

Bernard Earl, the son of M. Earl and Mary Denby Russell was born July 27, 1928 on a farm near Webster City. His family moved to the Popejoy/Dows area when Benard was yet young. Bernard attended and graduated from Dows High School in 1946. After high school, Bernard started farming. It would be his life’s Bernard E. Russell, work.

Bernard was united in marriage to Norma Thompson on August 26, 1949 at the Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. The couple first started farming on a farm south of Coulter. There they farmed and lived for 15 years.

In January of 1966, Bernard and Norma moved to the farm south of Dows. It was here Bernard was living at the time of his death. Bernard served on several boards in the surrounding area. Most notably, he was the Secretary for North Central FS for 17 years, and served on the Coulter Creamery Board. His hobby was working and being outside at the farm. After retirement, Bernard and Norma traveled extensively on bus tours. Bernard enjoyed reading, but his great love was spending time with his family. Bernard was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dows, where he served the church in numerous capacities.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Norma, four children, Craig (Jeanne) of Dows, David (Janice) of Williams, Donald (Mona) of Prescott Valley, AZ, Jane Plahn (Clay) of LaSalle, CO, eight grandchildren, Denise Froelich (Chad), Michael Russell, Clint Russell (Erin), Troy Russell, Erin Russell, Nathan Plahn, Jeffrey Plahn, Mary Murphy (Tyler), nine great-grandchildren, Grace, Elizabeth, Savanah, Mollee, Kinnick, Gavin, Kennedy, Ainsley, Clayton, a brother, Larry Russell of Downing Town, PA, a sister, Norma Jean Hill of Clive, step brother, Richard Fibikar (Betty) of Dows, and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Gertrude V. Peyton

Gertrude V. Peyton, age 94, of Dows, passed away Thursday March 13, 2014 Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion.

Funeral services for Gertrude Peyton were held Monday, March 17, 2014 at the United Presbyterian Church in Dows. Pastor Shawn Hill officiated. Burial took place in the Belmond Cemetery at a later date. Visitation for Gertrude Peyton was held Sunday, March 16, 2014 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows and continued one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Gertrude Vivian Peyton, the daughter of Herman and Marie Sendenfelder Braun, was born on December 6, 1919 near Alexander, Iowa. She attended and graduated from the Alexander High School. Gertrude was united in marriage to Harold Elllis. The couple moved to San Diego, California, when Harold entered the service during World War II.

Harold died in the South Pacific during the war. Gertrude then moved back to Iowa met and married Max Dean Peyton. The couple made their home in Hampton and Dows. Gertrude was living at Dows at the time of her death. Gertrude worked for Tofte Sand/ Gravel as the executive secretary and office manager. The majority of her working life, Gertrude worked for Tofte, until the company closed. Gertrude then worked for several different offices in the area. Gertrude worked for a publisher in Alden until she retired at the age of 62. Gertrude was an avid bowler. Her bowling team did hold various state tournament appearances as well as a state championship. She enjoyed quilting and reading. Gertrude was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Dows, where she was active in the women’s group.

Gertrude is survived by her son: Steven Wayne (Cheryl) Ellis of Clarion, three grandchildren, Joel (Pam) Ellis of Goldfield, Jeffrey Ellis of Kanawha, and Jonathan Ellis of Clarion, two great-grandchildren Joey and Jordan of Goldfield, two brothers and numerous other family and friends.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Harold, second husband, Max Dean, two sons, Terry, in infancy, Rick, and three sisters.
