Marie Nuehring

Marie L. (Meinders) Nuehring, 91, a long time resident of rural
Klemme, died on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at the Summit
Pointe Living Complex in Marion.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 16, at the
Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with
Reverend Donna Buckman officiating. Burial was in the Ell
Township Cemetery, Klemme.
Marie, the daughter of Lottie and John Meinders, was born on
September 26, 1916 in Meservey, one of six children. She
married Erwin G. Nuehring on September 8, 1937, and they
began farming near Klemme.
In addition to providing for the needs of her family, Marie
was a hardworking partner on the farm. Erwin and Marie
wintered in Palmetto, Florida, for 20 years while spending
their summers in Iowa. Following Erwin's death in February
1996, Marie lived at the Prairie View Apartments in Garner
for six years and then moved to Marion to live with her
daughter, Marcella before recently becoming at resident of
Summit Point.
Marie's family was always foremost in her life. She was a
dedicated, nurturing and loving wife, mother and
grandmother. Her family recalls the wonderful meals and
delicious canned produce that she made, Sunday gatherings
and meals with relatives, occasions when Marie and Erwin
would sponsor youth group gatherings and events at their
farm, and the beautiful sewing, embroidery, quilting and
other handcrafted items she made.
Marie enjoyed raising flowers and always had a large garden.
She and Erwin loved to go dancing at the Surf Ballroom and
looked forward to annual fishing excursions at Cass Lake, MN
with her sister Mildred and Duard Lewis. The couple enjoyed
traveling around the U.S. delivering motorhomes, and had
been to nearly every state, including Alaska. Their
grandchildren cherish memories of times spent in Florida and
on the farm picking fresh fruit from the trees in their
yard, running around at the farm, or a trip to the ocean
for a picnic and afternoon of collecting sea shells.
Marie was a 4-H Leader and was active in the Dorcas Circle
and as a church youth fellowship sponsor for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
granddaughter, Debbie Meyer; brother, Elmer Meinders;
sisters, Vergie Josten and Marjorie Lemke; and sons-in-law,
Garth Holscher and Eugene Sharp.
Survivors include children, Marcella Sharp of Marion, Eldon
(Theresa) Nuehring of Milton, Florida and Karen (Herbert)
Dahlin of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Harriet
(Mike) Hansen, Nadine Meyer, Eldon Nuehring, Jr., Elizabeth
(Clinton) Bradshaw, Julie Dahlin and Joyce Dahlin;
great-grandchildren, Amber Meyer, Andrea Meyer, Neil Hansen,
Tristan Bradshaw, Katherine Alexis Bradshaw and Gabriel
Bradshaw; great-great-grandchildren, Essence and Orion
Castle; and sisters, Mildred Lewis of Logan, New Mexico and
Gladys Jurgemeyer of Garner.

Pamela Kass

Pamela R. Kass, died on Monday, August 11, 2008, at home
surrounded by her family.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 15, at the
Rosemount (MN) United Methodist Church. Memorials may be
sent to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Pamela Rae, was born on September 22, 1946 at Garner, the
daughter of Russell and Margaret Reasoner. She graduated
from the Belmond High School in 1964.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, John Kass of St
Paul, Minnesota; and her daughter, Christina (Gordon)
Ferguson.

Robert Brade
August 19, 2008
Robert Allen Brade, 65, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at
his home in Quinby, Virginia.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 16, at the
Smith's Chapel United Methodist Church in Quinby, with
Pastor Thomas Durrance officiating.
Robert, a native of Garner, was the son of the late Jack and
Bertha Walton Brade, and also son to the late Lee Swaney and
Walt Henschen of Garner. He was also predeceased by his
mother and father-in-law, Arlo and Lucille Stoltenberg of
Belmond and daughter in-law, Marguerite Brade.
Robert was a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant. For over
thirteen years he worked at the White House Communications
Agency, serving under and supporting Presidents Nixon, Ford,
Carter and Reagan. After his retirement from the military,
he worked for 20 years at the Pentagon. Robert was a member
of Smith's Chapel United Methodist Church, treasurer of
Little Pungo Ruritan Club, and a member of Believer's vocal
quartet.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia G. Stoltenberg Brade;
sons, Todd A. Brade of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Neal R.
(Andrea) Brade of Front Royal, Virginia and Marc C. Brade of
Gainesville, Virginia; brother, Donald (Eunice) Brade of
Charlotte, North Carolina; grandchildren, Colleen, Owen,
Keegan and Laurel; and brother and sister-in-law, Arlo and
Dianne Stoltenberg of Mason City.

Russell Dougherty
August 19, 2008
Russell E. Dougherty, 85, of Belmond, died on Thursday,
August 14, 2008, at the Belmond Health Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, August 18, at
the St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond, with Rev. Nils
Hernandez officiating. Burial with military honors was in
the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond.
Russell Erwin, the son of Earl and Gertrude (DeNui)
Dougherty, was born on December 19, 1922 at Iowa Falls. The
family moved to Clarion when Russ was five years old. He
graduated from the Clarion High School in 1941.
Russ and Maxine Martin were married on June 7, 1948 in
Clarion. They eventually opened a jewelry store in Belmond,
moving there in 1949.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loren;
brother-in-law, Spencer; and infant grandson, Ryan.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Dennis (Joan) of Belmond,
Ron (Diane) of Ankeny, Steve (Val) of Belmond and Randy
(Kris) of Belmond; brother, Dale (Irene) of Clarion; sister,
Gerene Smith of Eagle Grove; grandchildren, Mark (Tammy),
Phil (Christine), Brad (Amanda), Eric (Jayme), Jennifer
(Joel) Eddleman, Jill (Todd) Sears, Katie (Tim) Barkema,
Sara (Nic) Sailsbury, Neil Dougherty and Jacki, Chelsey and
Shelby Dougherty; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dean Prescott
August 26, 2008
Dean J. Prescott, 45, died unexpectedly on Monday, August
18, 2008, at his home in Klemme.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 22, at the
Klemme United Methodist Church, with Pastor Eric Williams of
the Garner Evangelical Free Church and Pastor Paddy Druhl
officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery,
Klemme.
Dean James, the son of Clayton and Beverly (Tanner)
Prescott, was born on November 25, 1962 at Britt. He was
baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in
Klemme. Growing up, Dean was very adventurous and enjoyed
racing on mini bikes, motor scooters and three wheelers. At
the age of 14, he suffered injuries from an accidental gun
shot that impaired him physically for the remainder of his
life.
Dean graduated from the Klemme High School in 1982. He
worked for a time at Korbert in Klemme. Dean was a devoted
caregiver to his widowed mother. Following his mom's stroke
and move to the Concord Care Center in Garner, Dean made
many treks to visit her. Dean became a little more reserved,
focusing his attention on his dobermans, homing pigeons and
cockatiels.
Several years ago he met Sheila Orense, and their long
distance relationship developed into marriage on February 7,
2006 in Garner. Dean's life and energy for adventures and
travel was rekindled. Dean and Sheila traveled to various
events and happenings around Iowa. Dean also enjoyed fishing
at Ventura. Dean and Sheila had many plans and dreams for
the years to come.
Dean looked forward to restoring a 1948 Harley Davidson
street bike that he owned. He loved classic rock music and
spending time on his computer. He loved hunting and the
outdoors, and last fall one might find him on a country road
in his wheelchair, shotgun in hand and dog at his side,
pheasant hunting.
Dean was a long time member of the Klemme United Methodist
Church and recently he and Sheila belonged to the Garner
Evangelical Free Church.
He was preceded in death by his father; and maternal and
paternal grandparents.
Dean is survived by his wife; mother; brothers, Bill (Peggy)
Prescott of Thompson, Jim (Rosalie) Prescott and Sid (Julie
Haugen) Cuellar of Klemme, "Junior" Clayton (Roberta)
Prescott of Garner and Ron (Jolene) Prescott of Des Moines;
uncles, George Tanner of Garner and Walter Tanner of Mason
City; and Aunt Lorraine of Minnesota.

Priscilla Dingler
August 26, 2008
Priscilla L. Dingler, age 54, most recently of Belmond, died
of cancer on Friday, August 22, 2008, at the Belmond Health
Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 26, at the
Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond, with Rev. David De
Kuiper officiating. Graveside services will be held later in
Hill City, South Dakota.
Priscilla Lynn, was born on February 15, 1954 in Rapid City,
the daughter of Jack and Helen (Yoast) Davis, the youngest
of seven children. As a young child her mother divorced, and
her older siblings took a greater role of looking after
her.
Priscilla graduated from high school in Hot Springs in
1972. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado
in 1976 with a degree in Nursing Home and Health Care
Administration. Priscilla was the philanthropic chair for
Alpha Z Delta Sorority for many years.
Priscilla spent several years raising her children, Jeffrey,
Matthew and Mary Fletcher, working very hard to ensure that
their necessities and spiritual needs were met. They
attended church at least three times per week. Her family
was always foremost in her life.
Priscilla eventually pursued her professional aspirations as
a health care administrator throughout the Midwest. She
worked in Ellsworth, Kansas, Scotland, South Dakota,
Parshall and New Town, North Dakota, George, Iowa and at the
Belmond Health Care Center since August 2007. Co-workers
reflect fondly upon her caring, innovative and meticulous
leadership. Family and friends will miss her straight
forward attitude and great sense of humor. Her story telling
often included a unique ending and in a way that only she
could tell. She will also be remembered for her strong sense
of faith, renewing and strengthening her beliefs many times
during her life.
Priscilla was a life long member of the American Legion
Auxiliary and had been an active member of Rotary, Lions and
Kiwanis. She enjoyed traveling, her family recalling trips
to Tucson, Arizona and the Black Hills, visits to
consignment shops, time spent "junking" and her fondness for
antiquing. She was very proud of her new granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Jung and
father, Jack Davis.
Survivors include her children, Jeffrey Paul Fletcher of
Santa Anta, California, Matthew Owen Fletcher of Seattle,
Washington and Mary Alice Fletcher and her daughter, Stella
Renae of Sioux Falls; siblings, Mary Helen (Warren)
Alexander of Hill City, John (Eleanor) Davis of Helmville,
Montana, Gale (Sue) Davis of Rapid City, Susan Malenke of
Hot Springs, Anne (Jim) Zwetzig of Hot Springs and Elizabeth
Campbell (Doug Coyle) of Hot Springs.

Mary Lu Olson

Mary Lu (Cox) Olson, 65, died on Friday, August 22, 2008, at
her home in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her family.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 29, at the
Addicks United Methodist Church in Houston. A second service
will be held at the United Church of Christ Congregational
in Belmond, on Friday, September 5, at 11:00 a.m.
Mary Lu was born on November 18, 1942 in Belmond, the
daughter of Luin and Mary Jane Cox. She graduated from the
Belmond High School in 1960. She attended Shimer College for
one year and then transferred to the University of Iowa. On
February 25, 1962, she married her high school sweetheart,
Ronald D. Olson, at the Belmond Congregational Church.
Mary Lu was a computer whiz, avid reader and loving mother
and homemaker. She was a member of Chapter P, Houston of the
P.E.O. Sisterhood.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1980.
Mary Lu is survived by her husband; sons, Dean (Ruth) Olson
and John (Barbara) Olson; grandchildren, Elizabeth,
Courtney, Daniel and Tyler Olson; mother, Mary Jane Cox
Campbell and step-father, Bob Campbell; sisters, Lucinda
(Cox) McNeely and Dr. Martha Cox (Fred) Ho; and brothers,
Robert L. (Julie) Cox and James L. (Karen) Cox.
Memorials are suggested to The Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society.

Bernard
Black

Bernard "Bernie" C. Black, 76, of Belmond, died on Monday,
August 25, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 28, at the
Belmond United Methodist Church, with Pastors Mike and Paddy
Druhl officiating. Burial with military honors was in the
Belmond Cemetery.
Bernard Charles, the son of Raymond and Helen Ritchie Black,
was born on October 5, 1931 at Battle Creek, Michigan. He
graduated in 1949 from the Battle Creek Central High School
and began working at Eaton. Working for the Eaton
Corporation was a legacy in the Black family for over 100
years. Bernie was drafted into the United States Army in
1951 and discharged in 1953. In 1954, Bernard married
Margaret "Peggy" Paro. They first made their home in Battle
Creek and later in Kearney, Nebraska, Mexico City, and
finally Belmond. Bernie retired from Eaton as an engineer in
1993.
Bernie enjoyed golfing, car racing and watching sports. His
favorite team was the Detroit Tigers. Spending time with his
family, especially his grandchildren, was what Bernie loved
most. He attended all of their sporting events and
activities. Bernie was an active member of the Belmond
United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters.
Bernie is survived by his wife; his children, Tina (Tim)
Hieb of Alda, Nebraska and David (Marlene) Black of Belmond;
grandchildren, Amanda, Chelsea, Dylan, Amanda, David, Cody
and Chris; great-grandchildren, Dominic, Natalie, Logan and
Delaney; sister, Geraldine; brother, Raymond (Betty) of
Battle Creek; and a brother-in-law, Melvin Hinkle.
