Marty Davis
October 30, 2007
Marty Davis, 17, a senior at the Belmond-Klemme High School,
died on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at the Belmond Medical
Center as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle
accident.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 28, at the
Belmond United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Druhl and
Rev. Dick Kaiser officiating. Burial was in the St. Francis
Catholic Cemetery in rural Belmond.
Marty Joe, the son of
Joyce (Kaiser) and Jerry Davis, was born on November 29,
1989 in Peoria, Illinois. In his early years he defeated
numerous health challenges. Marty's perseverance in the face
of adversity as a young child carried him throughout his
life. In a recent autobiography he noted that his philosophy
was "Life is what you make of it. It is not always fair and
can be a real challenge, but you can do anything if you set
your mind to it."
Marty attended the
Belmond-Klemme Community Schools for most of his education.
He was looking forward to early graduation in December and
planned to attend Wyotech College in Laramie, Wyoming, to
major in diesel mechanics.
Marty was an absolute
racing nut and an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Dale,
Jr. His love of cars and mechanical work was a huge part of
his life. He enjoyed working side by side with his step-dad,
J.R. Clark, in his shop and at area race tracks. He
supported his step-dad as his number one fan, assistant
mechanic and pit-crew. Marty was known by many car drivers
and race fans throughout the region.
His passion for cars and
motors played a part in his recent employment and future
plans. He worked at Munson Trucking in Britt and job
shadowed with Verlyn Keeling at Keeling Auto in Belmond.
Marty had also been employed for a time at the Pizza Ranch
in Belmond.
Marty loved the outdoors
and was an avid fisherman. He welcomed each and every
opportunity to drown a line, whether at Uncle Don's cabin
near Ottertail-Long Lake, Minnesota with Aunt Carol and Aunt
Mary Ann, or with his "Papa Joe" (grandpa Joe Kaiser). In
winter, he and his step-dad would spend hours on the ice at
Lake Cornelia and Clear Lake.
Marty's other favorite
past times included playing rummy, cribbage and other card
games, playing X-Box racing and fishing games, music,
television and movies, including Blue Collar TV, Larry the
Cable Guy, Harry Potter, and Half-Baked. Marty looked
forward to shopping trips to Wal-Mart and Fleet Farm with a
stop at McDonald's. He enjoyed eating and then carrying on
the skills used to make grandma's home made buns. He
recently took up the hobby of skateboarding.
When he was younger, Marty
participated in athletics. He was a member of the FFA in
Belmond and served in various roles. He had been on a trip
with the FFA to the national convention in Kentucky and met
Richard Childress of Childress Racing. He and J.R. were
preparing to build a hornet series race car for Marty. He
couldn't wait to explore the opportunities and journeys
ahead, spending time with his mom and J.R., being with his
friends, or just playing with his shitzu and buddy Cherokee.
His mischievous smile will be remembered fondly, and he will
be dearly missed by his friend, Ashley Poulson of Algona.
He was preceded in death
by his maternal grandmother, Mona Kaiser; paternal
grandparents, George and Dorothy Ross; aunt, Carol Kaiser;
and step-grandmother, Betty Davis.
Survivors include his

Rossell, was born on December 6, 1918, on her grandparent's
farm in rural Lewis, Iowa. She graduated from the Lewis
Community High School and continued her education at the
Mason City Junior College, Iowa State Teacher's College, and
eventually completed her bachelor's degree in education at
Drake University.
Leona married Lloyd Glen
Stevens, on October 19, 1939 in Papillion, Nebraska. The
couple moved to Belmond in 1953. Lloyd operated the Western
Auto Store, worked as a carpenter, and sold feed and corn,
while Leona continued her life-long devotion to teaching.
She was employed as a teacher in the Goodell and Belmond
Community Schools and had the unique opportunity to teach
under the leadership of her son, Tom who was a principal at
Belmond for a time.
Leona was an educator
through and through. She was always organized and planned
her lessons in advance. Leona retired in 1981 but continued
as a substitute for a number of years. Tom recalled she was
still planning lessons and learning programs for the future
even after she retired. She loved teaching young people.
Leona was a "salt of the
earth" wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend to
many. She relished times spent with her family. In earlier
years Leona and Lloyd enjoyed square dancing and fishing
trips with family and friends. She was always up for a game
of cribbage or time with other couples at card parties.
Leona had done some oil painting, enjoyed crocheting, and
was an avid reader.
She was a long-time member
of the Belmond United Methodist Church, a past member of the
Order of the Eastern Star, and the Iowa State Education and
National Education Associations.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; husband, Lloyd in March, 1995; daughter,
Linda Webner at age 30; an infant sister and infant brother;
and brothers, Eldred and Austin.
Leona is survived by her
son, Tom (Dee) of Winona; son-in-law, Dennis (Marilyn)
Webner of Sergeant Bluff; grandchildren, Chris (Laurie)
Webner and their children, Luke, Matthew and Grace of
Panora; Steve (Stacy) Webner and their children, Colton and
