DOROTHY STRAUBE

Dorothy Straube, 91, of Osage and formerly of Rudd, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

ELINOR DAHLKE
March 20, 1920 - February 4, 2014

Elinor Dahlke, 93, died on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at the Stacyville Nursing Home, Stacyville, where she had been a resident the last 10 months.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Paul Weeg officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar and one hour prior to service at the church.

Elinor Strouf was born March 20, 1920, in the county of Manitowoc, near the town of Mishicot, Wis., to Ladislav and Mayme (Schradle) Strouf. She was the second oldest of five children. Her siblings were Ladislav (Jim), Alvin, Helen and Norman. She grew up on a farm in the Myrtle/Hayward, Minn. area. She graduated from Austin High School in 1938. After graduation, she met Floyd Dahlke at the Strevling Dairy near Austin, where he worked. They were married on March 7, 1940, at Northwood. They had four children: Bertha, Barbara, LeRoy and Kathryn.

Elinor and Bertha lived in Portland, Ore. and near an army base in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., while Floyd served in WWII. After the war, they moved often, living on many different farms in Iowa and Minnesota. They eventually settled on an acreage they were proud to call their own near Toeterville.

Elinor worked at the St. Ansgar Elementary School as a cook and custodian for many years. In the late 80’s they bought a home in Osage.

She was a very strong lady who worked hard and appreciated what she had. She enjoyed the simple things: time spent with family and friends, camping, dogs and most of all, tending her plants and taking care of her yard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Floyd in 1996, daughter Kathy in 2003, three brothers and her sister.

Elinor is survived by Bertha (Alvis) Moravec of Claremont, Minn., Barbara (Eugene) Strain of Kasson, Minn., and LeRoy (Janet) Dahlke of Riceville; 8 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

IRMA V. JEFFRIES
July 30, 1924 -  February 7, 2014

Irma V. JeffriesIrma V. Jeffries, age 89, of Osage, died Friday, February 7, 2014. at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

There will be a prayer service for family and friends at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Pastor Sam Mack officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.
Irma was born on July 30, 1924, in Stacyville, Iowa, to Vernie and Emma (Miller) Adams. She attended school in Little Cedar. On September 28, 1944, she married Leo Jeffries in Kahoka, Missouri. Irma worked at the Maid Rite Café, Cedar Valley Produce, and retired from A to Z Drying. She enjoyed dancing, scrapbooking, embroidery, gardening, and playing Scrabble and cards.

Irma is survived by her children, Carole (Bob) Parr of Park City, Illinois, Leo (Barb) Jeffries of Osage, and Oliver (Teri) Jeffries of Osage; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister, Frieda Naber of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo Jeffries in 1984; grandson, Donnie Rosen; and sister, Alzina Sheldon.

MERLE LEE JOHNSON

 

BAYVIEW, Idaho | Merle Lee Johnson (Mert, Merlito, VernMerleEarl, Snicker) of Bayview, Idaho passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, in the Circle of Life unit at Kootenai Health. He was surrounded by his wife Dorothy, his nephew Roger Johnson and wife Lori and many friends.

Merle was born Sept. 29, 1944, the son of Peter and Dorothy Johnson in Osage. He attended school in Little Cedar and Osage and graduated in 1962, then went to NIACC in Mason City before he enlisted in the United States Air Force with his friend Terry Cockrum. Once in the service he attended Russian Language School in Monterey, Calif. and interpreted radio messages in Turkey and Italy. After discharge from the Air Force in 1968 he returned home and married Dorothy I. Kremer on April 26, 1969. They moved to Colorado where Merle received his degree from the University of Colorado then worked in Mental Health, both inpatient and outpatient. Merle and Dorothy moved to Bayview, Idaho in 1992 where they have made their home since.

Merle enjoyed traveling, camping, playing ball with his dogs, gardening and skiing, but especially enjoyed visiting with people whether they be family, friends or a stray he happened to find. He was especially known for his big smile and always had a joke or two for you.

Merle is survived by his wife Dorothy of 44 years, brothers Robert (Roslea), Carroll (Betty), Dale and Keith (Sharon), along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew, and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Dorothy Johnson, his sister-in-law Sandy Johnson and nephew Chad Kesler.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Bayview, Idaho in the spring and in Little Cedar, Iowa in the summer.

Luella Bonoff

CLEARWATER, Fla. | Luella Bonoff, of Clearwater, Florida, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.

Luella Bonoff was born on November 1, 1929 at home to Sam and Florence (Blonigan) Bonoff. She was a graduate of Osage High School and Iowa State University with a degree in Home Ec. Education. She received a B.S. degree. She taught in Garnavilla, Clear Lake, Iowa, Las Vegas, Nev., and Dunedin, Fla.

She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy (Matt) Niess of Osage, Iowa and Mary (Al) Kluesner of Edina, Minn, and also eleven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a niece and nephew.


Bonnie Lee Dau

Bonnie Lee Dau, 78, of Mitchell, died suddenly on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Memorial services will be held on Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church, Mitchell, with Rev. David Werges officiating. Per Bonnie’s wishes, she was cremated and inurnment will be at a later date at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Mitchell. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.

Bonnie Lee Dau, daughter of August and Laura (Marcks) Beyer, was born at St. Ansgar, on Jan. 25, 1936. She attended rural schools and Osage High School.

In December of 1954, Bonnie married Lindon Perry Dau at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and they renewed their vows in 1965. She was a long time member of Faith Lutheran Church, having been a Bible school teacher, circle leader and helper in many projects, including releading for some of the stained glass church windows. Bonnie worked for the Mitchell School Cafeteria until the school closed. She then was a dispatcher at the Mitchell County sheriffs office and at the Floyd County sheriffs office as a jailer. Bonnie’s interests included making leaded glass things, flowers, especially her many hostas and her many bird feeders and birds.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lindon on Feb. 9, 2011; and stepfather, Garret Roby.

She is survived by her brothers, Robert Beyer of Rochester, Minn. and Gary Roby of Osage; sister in law, Sylvia (Robert) Wilson of St. Ansgar; nephews, Jeff, David, Eric and nieces, Penny, Candy, Laurie, Suzette and numerous relatives and friends.

Bonnie will be missed by her family and friends. Blessed be her memory.

Ronald Kollman

Ronald Kollman, 81, of Osage, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at his home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Sam Mack officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation will be from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Marvin Junior Smolik

Marvin Junior Smolik, 82, of Osage, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, peacefully in his sleep at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services were originally scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. Funeral services will now be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Roy Ott officiating.

Visitation will be still be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Marvin was born DeC. 28, 1931, in Burr Oak Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of George William and Viola Mae (Carrison) Smolik. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1950. Marvin served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. On Nov. 26, 1953, he married Jeannette Roseberry at St. Martin’s Church is Somersworth, New Hampshire. Marvin worked as a telephone installer for Western Electric. He enjoyed gardening, tractors, farming, hunting, fishing, coin collecting and having coffee at Hardee’s. He had a great love for cats.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Jeannette (Roseberry) Smolik of Osage; his children, Leanne Smolik of Osage, Steven (Laurie) Smolik of Osage; grandchildren, Dayne Smolik, Stephanie Smolik and Dylan Sheldon; great-grandchild, Tyson Smolik; siblings, Marlow “Dean” Smolik of Chambersburg, Penn., Wayne (Elaine) Smolik of Osage, and Allen (Jane) Smolik of Osage; an aunt, Gladys Putnam of Osage; an uncle, Duane Smolik of North Bend, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Frank and Anna (Cejka) Smolik, Clinton and Ida (Barker) Carrison; and infant daughters, Suzanne Marie and Mary Louise.

Tyler Alan Tourtellott 

Tyler Alan Tourtellott, 27, of Osage, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in an avalanche while snowmobiling near Togwotee Mountain Lodge in Wyoming.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with Pastor Solveig A.H. Zamzow and Pastor R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. 

Tyler was born Jan. 16, 1987, in Mason City, the son of Troy and Yvonne (Jensen) Tourtellott. He graduated from Osage High School in 2005 and from NIACC in 2007 with an Associate in Applied Science degree. Tyler was employed by Popp Excavating. He was a member of the EZ Riders Snowmobile Club, Cedar River Trail Blazers ATV Club, and Mitchell County Cattlemen’s Association. Tyler loved working on the farm with his cow and calf herd and playing in the mountains in the winter snow or on his ATV in the summer. He loved spending time with his family and his large ring of friends. He will be missed by many including his canine side kick, Piper.

Tyler is survived by his parents, Troy and Yvonne Tourtellott of Nora Springs; his sisters, Nicole Tourtellott of Osage and Haley Tourtellott at home; special friend, Bridget Juenger of Osage; maternal grandmother, Janet Weaverling of Osage; maternal grandfather, Melvyn (Nancy) Jensen of Albert Lea; paternal grandparents, Jerald (Lora) Tourtellott of Osage; aunts and uncles, Jerry (Wendy) Jensen of Riceville, Teresa Jensen of North Liberty, and Sheila (Arnie) Stroberg of Osage; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his uncle, Frank Tourtellott; and step-grandfather, Marold Weaverling.

Lavon Charlotte Anderson

Lavon Charlotte Anderson, 87, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 24 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, Iowa. Inurnment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley at a later date.

Lavon, the daughter of Anson and Olive (Homersham) Pike was born on April 25, 1926, in Huron S.D. She moved with her family when she was ten years old to Hartley, where she received her education graduating from Hartley High School in 1945.

On Jan. 8, 1945, Lavon was united in marriage to Richard Eugene Anderson in Sioux Falls, S.D. Following their marriage the couple resided in Hartley their entire married life and raised their four children. Lavon was a stay-at-home mom and cherished every moment of her children's lives. She served as the Hartley Chamber of Commerce Secretary from 1973 to 1979.

Lavon was an active member of the Trinity United Church of Christ. She was a 50 year member in the Order of the Eastern Star, and T.T.T. Lavon also belonged to the P.E.O. Chapter CW, Red Hats Ladies Club, Eastern Star State Grand Martha, district instructor and was a Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls. Her hobbies included golfing at Meadowbrook Golf Course, playing bridge, airplane pilot, crafting and knitting. In 1979 she served as co-chairperson for the Hartley Centennial. Her latest contribution to Hartley was serving on the Cemetery Chapel Committee. Lavon was very well known for her commitment to her family and the town of Hartley.

She is survived by her children: Konnie (Craig) Snider of Osage, Michael (Agnes) Anderson of Primghar, Iowa, and Paul (Retha) Anderson of Easley, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lavon was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard, daughter, Diane Schilmoeller, brother, Clifford Pike, three sisters, Pearl Wright, Lorene Fick and Reva Olhausen.


Charles Adams 

MESA, Ariz. | Charles Adams, 83, passed away on Feb. 7, 2014, in Mesa Arizona.

Charles was born on August 21, 1930, in Stacyville to Charles and Sadie Adams. He was a Korean War Veteran who served in the U.S. Army 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion. He married Sonja Olson on Dec. 31, 1953.

He is survived by his wife Sonja of 60 years, four children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, two sisters Genevieve (Roy) Walters and Millie Valasek.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Private services were held in his home in Arizona City, Ariz.

Chuck will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Kristy K. Koster

Kristy K. Koster, 54, of Ames, passed away Feb. 22, 2014, in Iowa City, after a brief illness.

Kristy was born on March 21, 1959 in Osage, and attended Visitation Grade School in Stacyville, and St. Ansgar Sr. High School. After high school she attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1982 and began her career in the food service department at Iowa State University. She became an excellent baker and was the favorite go to person when special events at Iowa State occurred. Kristy loved to travel with her family and enjoyed her yearly trips with her sisters across the United States and Europe. She was an excellent care-giver to her father and will be sorely missed by all of her family. We will never forget her infectious smile and caring nature.

Kristy was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend, and was preceded in death by her mother, Delores, two brothers, Patrick and Mark, and brother-in-law, Larry Cain. Kristy is survived by her father, Edgar, Nevada, Iowa, four sisters, Karen Cain, Janesville, Wis., Jane Koster, Des Moines, Nancy (Michael) Teasdale, Edina, Minn., Mary (Efren) Vintimilla, Asheville, N.C., and sister-in-law, Teresa Ondracek (Pat), four brothers, Daniel, Boise, Idaho, Dale (Jennifer), Prescott Valley, Ariz., Paul (Carole), Bloomington, Minn., and Craig (Naoise), Eden Prairie, Minn., along with 17 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Auburn, Iowa, followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 1. A private burial service will be held at a later date. Following mass will be a luncheon.

Our family would like to thank the staffs at Mary Greeley in Ames and the University of Iowa Hospitals for the wonderful care and love Kristy received while being hospitalized. Thank you to the many caring and supportive friends and extended family for the kind words and prayers during this time.

Dean Robert Nuehring

Dean Robert Nuehring, 86, of Osage, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at Eden Presbyterian Church, 3105 Glass Avenue, rural Rudd, with Pastor Jennifer Suydam officiating. Burial will be in Eden Presbyterian Cemetery with Military Honors by the Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Dean was born April 17, 1927, on a farm near Klemme, the son of Owen and Blanche (Montgomery) Nuehring. He was educated in rural country schools in Hancock County. Dean served in the US Army during WWII and was honorably discharged on Jan. 21, 1947. He was united in marriage to Elsie Gerdes at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Klemme on Feb. 24, 1948. They lived and farmed near Nora Springs, before moving to a farm near Osage. Dean and Elsie were blessed with seven children and celebrated 57 years of marriage before she passed away in March 2005. On Aug. 16, 2008, he married Dorothy Brandau at Eden Presbyterian Church. Dorothy passed away in January 2013. Dean took great pride in his farming and his children were his passion. He was a member of Eden Presbyterian Church, where he served in many capacities. He enjoyed playing cards and square dancing. He was a good friend and neighbor.

Dean is survived by his daughters, Avon (Jerry) Rurup of Titonka, and children, Jodi and Jeremy; Donna (Marloe) Ellingson of Joice, and children, Karen, Jennifer and Dean; Nancy Hirota of Osage, and children, Nicole, Natalie, Nicholas and Nolan; Janet (Gerard) May of Osage, and children, Jonathan and Jeffrey; Ronda Olson of Rose Creek, Minn., and children Katherine and Derek; grandchildren, Amber, Stephanie and Alexander Ricke; daughter-in-law, Sharon Mihm of Wellsville, Kan., and children, Timothy, Holly and Michael Nuehring; and 20 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, Marlan Krull, Pamela Carman, Kenneth Krull; 5 step great-grandchildren; his brother, Keith (Wilma) Nuehring of Webster City; his three sisters, Mavis Eckes of Long Prairie, Minn.; Marie VerHelst of Klemme and Inez (Bruce) Dunbar of Unionville, Mo.; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie (Gerdes) Nuehring; his wife, Dorothy (Brandau) Nuehring; his son, Dennis Nuehring; his daughter, Brenda Ricke; four sisters and four brothers.
