Marjorie Martin

CHARLES CITY - Marjorie Martin, 95, of Charles City, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's.

Per Marjorie's request, funeral services will be private.

Marjorie Juanita McFall Martin was born May 27, 1917, at Moulton, the daughter of Austin and Ferrie (Moss) McFall. Shortly after her graduation from Moulton High School she fell in love and married a handsome radio singer, Archie Martin. They became parents of three and as her husband changed professions to support a growing family they subsequently made their home in Moline and Rockford, Ill.; and it was from Anoka, Minn., Archie was chosen for the Manhattan Project in Las Alamos, New Mexico.

During his absence, Marjorie, like so many women during this era, joined the war effort by working at Federal Cartridge in Anoka, all the while shouldering the responsibility of both mother and father to her three children. After Archie discharged his obligation to the project, they moved to Charles City where he joined his brother, William, and formed Martin Brothers -a paint contracting business. The size of their family grew during the ensuing years by three, making a total of six children.

Marjorie eventually returned to the work force at Dr. Salsbury's Laboratories, later Solvay and currently Pfizer, as department secretary/office manager. She took great pride in her association there and made many friends, due in no small part to her conscientious work ethic and acumen.

She retired in 1992 and enjoyed years of joyful carefree times wintering in Arizona before Alzheimer's made further trips impossible.

Marjorie's family was her first priority, and she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a meticulous housekeeper (dubbed Mrs. Clean) and family joked that heart surgery could safely be performed on her garage floor. She loved working in her yard - as its appearance reflected. Marjorie was a marvelous cook - and family holiday dinners were a gastronomical delight - and the happiest times.

She will be remembered for her resilience, boundless energy, unerring focus on perfection, sweet, gentle spirit and loving, giving nature.

Living family members include her children, Brenda (Gary) Molitor and Debbra (Scott) Metcalf, both of Mason City; James (Sonja) Martin of Phoenix, Ariz., Charlotte Springer and Kathryn Herbrechtsmeyer, both of Charles City; a sister, Maxine Farren of Knoxville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Archie; a daughter, Sharon Lynette; a great- grandson, Ryan Martin; and a brother, Richard McFall.

As a young woman she rode and showed American Saddlebred Horses which was an activity she shared with her parents and brothers. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, painting, crafts, and dancing. It always brought joy to her life when she could spend time with children and especially with her "Grandma Marj" grandchildren.

Harold E. Trettin

Rockford - Harold E. Trettin, 94, of Rockford, Iowa, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 2, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 East Main, Rockford. Officiating will be the Rev. Bob Scheurer. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the church. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, Iowa. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.Fullertonfh.com.

Harold was born March 18, 1918, on the family farm near Grafton, the son of Albert F. and Kathrina (Claus) Trettin and became the fifth of ten children. He was baptized Harold Edward Jacob Trettin April 21, 1918, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, and was confirmed in 1932 at Zion Lutheran in Rockford. The Trettin family moved to Rockford in 1929. He graduated in 1937 from Rockford High School.

Harold began his farming career raising turkeys while still in high school. He continued raising turkeys and started a hatchery following World War II. A short time later he switched to chickens with the business being known as Trettin Hatchery and Poultry Farm. In 1979, the firm converted to pork production. His never-ending drive was his lifelong demeanor; he saw opportunities where others saw the end of a career. He would push himself with hard work and education, which are traits he passed on to his children.
In the early 1940s he would often travel to Mason City to get feed for his birds. He spotted the bookkeeper at General Mills Farm Service Feeds, asked her out and began dating her. He married his life long partner Frances Masterson on July 16, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

He was a man of faith and dedication to his church. As a young man he helped dig a basement by hand and using horse and wagons under the old Zion Lutheran Church. Years later he served on the building committee to build the new church on the east end of town.
Harold enjoyed a variety of activities from a mail-order course in taxidermy as a boy to photography, sports, raising hunting dogs and horses, and making wine. He served on the Rockford School Board from 1948 until 1978 during which time the consolidation of the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock school system and the construction of a new high school building became a reality.

He also served on the Board of Regents at Waldorf College, the American Egg Board and the NIAD Poultry Group. He was a charter member of the Rockford Lions Club, and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1996 for humanitarian services. He helped the Rockford Golf and Country Club become a reality for the community.

With his wife, Harold enjoyed raising his family, traveling, motor home trips to Alaska and other destinations, and a cabin that became their sanctuary on Leech Lake. He enjoyed fishing and hosting family and friends at the cabin. His greatest accomplishment and his first love was his family: children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their spouses. He was especially proud of all their accomplishments. He treasured his many friends.

Those who shared Harold's life include his wife Frances of 68 years, his four children, Kenneth and his wife Eileen Trettin, Jean and her husband John Pearson, Beatrice "Bea" and her husband Mark Volk, and Louise and her husband Todd Seibert all of Rockford; 14 grandchildren, Heather (Shawn) FitzGerald, Anthony (Jenny) Trettin, Christopher Trettin, Reed (Tracy) Trettin, Aaron (Elizabeth) Pearson, Paul (Amanda) Pearson, Alex Pearson, Michelle Volk, Stephanie (Augie) Nguyen, Brittany Volk, Emily (Terry) Fett, Anna Seibert, Jacob (Paige) Seibert and Michael Seibert; nine great-grandchildren, Claire, Brianne, Harley, William, Wyatt, Alaina, Joshua, Matthew and Emma along with his two surviving siblings, George Trettin and Shirley Fullerton; sisters-in-law Margaret Trettin and Betty Williams; cousin Elfie Pingree; and many neices and nephews.

His sisters Ella Schutt, Mable Trettin, Marie Weigand; brothers Wesley, Edwin, and Walter Trettin, and Orland Graper; and cousins Clarence and Melvin Graper preceded Harold in death.

Arrangements are at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 302 West Main, Rockford, IA 50468, 641-756-3311, www.Fullertonfh.com.

Kimberly Ann was born Oct. 25, 1960, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Ronald and Loretta (Hoffman) Higham. She attended and graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. After high school she attended Iowa State University for pre-nursing, then went on to the University of Iowa where she earned a BSN. She was married to Steven C. Allgood, the love of her life, on June 8, 1985, in Burlington, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Rachel, Samantha and Eli.

Kimberly worked a variety of nursing positions before leaving nursing to stay home with her kids, to pour into their lives with love and to raise them as ambassadors for Christ.
She was a member of P.E.O chapter IY and Grace Evangelical Free Church. In both settings she enjoyed fellowship with women: meeting for lunches, time with prayer partners, weekly bible studies and activities at church. She delighted in spending time with her husband and children, reading the Bible, going on walks, preparing meals for her family and gardening.

Her life was lived out of devotion to others and to Jesus Christ, above all else. Her gentle demeanor, selfless attitude and sweet spirit blessed all who knew her. She has often been referred to as an "angel" by friends and strangers. She reached out to others with a listening ear and a tender open heart, encouraging those in her path from day to day. She embodied the phrase "quick to listen and slow to speak," and always took time to say "thank you" in a way that never lacked sincerity.

For Kim, living and loving could not be separated from each other. She was God's gift to all while here, and memories of her will be cherished forever along with the beautiful life-lessons she taught and the inspiration that she still gives to love as God first loved us, without exception and without question. As a tribute, her family plans to further global mission efforts in her honor.
