Edwin F. Trettin
U.S. Coast Guard   WWII

Rockford - Edwin F. Trettin, 96, of Rockford, entered the gates of heaven on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2012, at his home, with his family at his bedside.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Gospel Light House Church, 201 Madison, Floyd, Iowa. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Phillips. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main, Rockford. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, following a lunch at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Edwin F. Trettin Memorial Fund in care of Margaret. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.Fullertonfh.com website.

Edwin Fredrick Albert Trettin was born on July 17, 1916, the son of Albert and Kathrina (Claus) Trettin at Grafton, Iowa. He attended rural school near Grafton then moved with his family to the farm near Rockford in 1927. He graduated with the class of 1936 from Rockford High School. His draft number was the first to be drawn in Floyd County, so he enlisted in the Coast Guard in December, 1940. He served in combat duty in the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the South Pacific. He became one of the top gunners for the Coast Guard Cutter Ingham. The Ingham later became the most decorated ship in the U.S. fleet, and later received a presidential citation. The ship is anchored at Key West, Florida, as a national museum. He remained stationed on the ship until the war ended. When he returned to Iowa, he continued his life-long career as a farmer from which he never officially retired, disking and plowing into the 2012 spring planting season. One of his long- time skills from the service was tying knots and splicing rope for area farmers. His military experiences never really left him as he served as commander for several years of the Walker Graper American Legion Post No. 338 in Rockford. In the 67 years of membership, he only missed two funerals and two Memorial Day services, honoring his fallen brothers and sisters.

Following his honorable discharge from the service, he married his sweetheart Margaret Masterson on March 3, 1946, at Zion Lutheran Church, where they remained members for many years. They were also members at Hanford Community Church and have been attending the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd for the last five years.

Ed was very active during his life taking many fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada over the years with friends and family, served on numerous church boards, the Rockford Elevator board, the Rockford Shipping Association, Ingham Coast Guard Association, the Coast Guard Combat Association, the Steam Engine Club, Farm Bureau, the American Legion, and was a life member of the V.F.W. in Charles City.

He also loved to travel with his wife and attended his ship reunions. They traveled to Israel in 1982 where he was baptized with his wife in the Jordan River, and celebrated their 37th anniversary. In March 2012, they went to Florida with their daughter and her husband and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. They visited the Holy Land Experience and visited his beloved Ingham. Ed always put the Lord and his family first. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Those mourning his loss are his wife Margaret of 66 years, his four children Edwina (Don) Casler, Roger (Teresa) Trettin, Karen (Moses) Saleh all of Rockford and Donald Trettin of Charles City; grandchildren Cynthia Trettin, Cory, Monte and Verlynn Casler, Michelle Horstman, Kari Witte, Lindsey and Joshua Trettin, Robert Christensen, Kathrina Klipping, and Kimberly Culham, 23 great grandchildren and one great- great-grandson, sister Shirley Fullerton, brothers Harold (Frances) and George Trettin all of Rockford.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Ella Schutt, Mable Trettin, Marie Weigand, and brothers Wesley and Walter Trettin and Orland Graper, son-in-law Bob Christensen, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
