Bob Hassebroek

Buffalo Center - Bob Hassebroek, age 69, of Buffalo Center, passed away Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at his home.

A memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. Inurnment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center is assisting the family with arrangements.

Online condolences can be left at www.winterfuneralhome.com.

Robert Allen Hassebroek was born in the family farm home five miles northeast of Buffalo Center on December 10, 1942, to Marvin and Margaret Hassebroek. Although Mom always called him Robert, he was known as "Bob" by almost everyone else.

Bob lived on that farm until August 12, 1962, when he married his high school sweetheart, DeeAnn Nelson. Four children were born to this marriage. David and Sheila died in infancy and Darla and Steven. They also had four beautiful grandchildren, Morgan, Sam, Rachel and Ben, whom they loved very much.

Bob was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a member since 1962 and served on the church council.

Bob and DeeAnn lived in Buffalo Center and Swea City until August of 1964 when they moved back to the farm. In 1985 he and DeeAnn moved back into Buffalo Center to a house near the park.

Bob was a farmer until 1991, but in 1972 he got involved part-time in the insurance business and in 1980 he bought the insurance agency of John Lande which later became Hassebroek Agency, Inc., and then Central States Agency just before he retired in 2008. Insurance and real estate sales were his life's work and enjoyment.

After DeeAnn's passing on September 26, 2006, Bob was blessed to meet and share the remainder of his life with Sandra Armstrong. Sandy was a loving partner. They enjoyed traveling, trips to the casino and watching old westerns.

Bob loved Buffalo Center and spent his life working with projects to enhance the community. In 1981 he formed the Buffalo Center Development Corp. to put together projects of improvement and has served as its president since it was formed. He then designed and had the Larson Shelter House built in the City Park north of the swimming pool. In 1983, there developed a need for a medical clinic building, so he helped form Bison Limited and spearheaded the building of the Buffalo Center Medical Clinic. He was Bison Limited's president for 26 years.

In 2002, Bob and his brother Willy decided that Buffalo Center needed a day care center and the Buffalo Center Development Corporation should build it. With help from some of the other members of the Corporation, Little Bison Childcare Center was born. With funding in place through grants and loans, construction started in 2002, and on July 1, 2003, the Center opened for business. Today it has 80 kids registered. Bob spent countless hours on this project.

Bob was a member of the Buffalo Center Volunteer Fire Department for many years and also was very active in the Community Club and the Lions Club and served as President for several years. One of his favorite projects was organizing and leading the building of the kids PlayCenter equipment in the Lions Park.

A unique thing happened when Bob and DeeAnn purchased the former Buffalo Center Hospital building in 1997. The building had been converted to apartments by Dr. Moermond and Bob remodeled the entire building. It just worked out that the largest and last apartment to remodel became empty in 2004 and so Bob remodeled this one into an apartment for him and DeeAnn to live in. The coincidence was that in the northwest corner of the apartment where the guest bedroom is now, was the operating room where all four of their children were delivered. Also, son Steven had the last surgery performed in this hospital when he had his tonsils removed in 1974.

Bob overcame open heart surgery in 1993 and Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2007, but could not overcome the pulmonary fibrosis lung disease which took his life on October 13, 2012.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Margaret, his wife, DeeAnn, his son David, his daughter Sheila and his father and mother-in-law, Albin and Helen Nelson. Left to mourn are his daughter, Darla Hassebroek of West Des Moines, his son and daughter-in-law Steve and Sharla Hassebroek of Buffalo Center, and their children, Morgan, Samuel, Rachel and Benjamin, his brother Marlyn Hassebroek and wife Ruth of Buffalo Center, his sister Shirley Eisenbarth and husband Mark of Algona, his brother Dennis Hassebroek and wife Nola of West Des Moines, his brother Wilbert Hassebroek and wife Nancy of Buffalo Center, his sister Elaine Wilcox and husband Roger of Hampton and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Internment is in Olena Mound Cemetery beside his wife and two children.

Dorothy Marie Brasch
U.S. Navy Waves  WWII

ST. ANSGAR - Dorothy Marie Brasch, a long-time resident of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at age 91.

Born in 1921 in Mount Vernon, N.Y., she was the daughter of Robert and Harriet Emerson. The family later moved to Pleasantville and New Rochelle, N.Y., where she graduated from high school in 1940. It was in Pleasantville at the community pool that she was first introduced to her long-time love, swimming.

When the war broke out, she joined the Navy Waves in 1943 to serve her country. With hopes of becoming a control tower operator and moving to California, she was instead sent to Yeoman School in Cedar Falls. It must have been fated because it was there she met her husband of 66 years, Claire Brasch.

After a whirlwind courtship, Claire sent her an engagement ring through the mail and she took a cross-country train to San Diego, where he was stationed in the Marines. They were married in San Diego in 1945 before he was shipped overseas again. With the war's end, they would make their home first in New Hampton and in 1950, St. Ansgar.

One of the first things they did after buying a house in St. Ansgar was to break ground on a swimming pool. Over the next 30 years, Dorothy would teach countless children to swim in that backyard pool. She would also stage elaborate synchronized swimming shows each year. She would later become a Red Cross Instructor Trainer and traveled the state teaching swimming instructors. She also spent several years volunteering with handicapped children, introducing them to the joys of water. She was active in volunteer activities in St. Ansgar throughout her life, an avid reader, and a gardener, and a lifelong devotee to fitness and athletics. She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her daughter Sally Emerson-Brasch, son Bob Brasch (Susan); daughter Barbara Ray (Rex); her sister Bette Bonnet; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of long-time friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Claire Brasch, her daughter Susan Kline, her son-in-law Jerry Kline, her brother Robert Emerson, and her sister Ruth Backus.

A private service will be held. Cards and donations to a memorium can be sent to Bob Brasch, 309 E. Third St., St. Ansgar, IA, 50472
