Victor LeRoy Parks was born on Aug. 22, 1920, in Belmond, the son of Clayton C. and Othella B. (Holaday) Parks. On Nov. 8, 1942, he married the love of his life, Helen Marie Vierkant, a marriage that lasted nearly 68 years, until her death on Aug. 15, 2010. They had three children: David, Jack and Donna.

Vic grew up on farms near Belmond, Cartersville and Rockwell. He continued to farm near Rockwell until 1973. Vic and Helen continued to live on that farm until entering the nursing home in 2009.
In 1962, Vic was seriously injured in a tractor accident on the Hank Cahill farm near Mason City, which left him partially paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors had told the family that he would probably never walk again, but with assistance and guidance of Bill Otterman at the Easter Seal Village in Clear Lake, he not only walked, but continued to farm for the next 10 years.

Vic also liked sales work, mostly because he liked to meet and talk with people. He was a long-time salesman for Archer Oil Inc. and Eazy-Dry Inc. (David Manufacturing). For many years, he sold crop insurance for IMT, and later joined in partnership with Don Hitzhuzen (Hitzhuzen-Parks Insurance and Real Estate Agency) with offices in Rockwell and Clear Lake. He also worked as a substitute mail carrier.

Vic was a member of the Rockwell Lions Club (past president), associate member of the American Legion Post No. 208, Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and others too numerous to mention.

While a member of the Lions Club, he, along with others, was instrumental in getting the new nursing home built in Rockwell. He served on the board of directors of that nursing home, and as the first president of that board. He served brief periods on other community and country boards from time to time.

Vic always had a quick smile, and if appropriate, a joke to tell. He loved to go fishing and golfing with family and friends. Vic and Helen spent many weekend nights at the Surf, Moose or wherever there was a band to dance to. They loved to travel and managed to visit all 50 states, Canada and South America.

Vic was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Orbra (Buck) Parks; son-in-law, Casper Ludvigson; and father and mother-in-law, Harry and Hazel Vierkant.

Survivors include his children, Dave (Diane) Parks of Clear Lake, Jack Parks of Rockwell and Donna Ludvigson of Edgewood; grandchildren, Victoria (Nick) Murphy, Davy Marie Jakl, Zackery Parks, Adam Tyler, Michelle (Kevin) Ames, Derek and Justin Parks, Lonnie, Lorrie and Jeremy Ludvigson; seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Elmer (Mary) Vierkant; sisters-in-law, Hazel Darg and Wilda Vierkant; many nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors and tenant, Steve Sturges.
Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, 641-423-0924.

Florene L. Stolk

FOREST CITY - Florene L. Stolk, 98, of Forest City, died Friday, June 15, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 19, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Jerald Swanberg officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., today, Monday, June 18, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, Iowa, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Florene (Flo) Loretta Stolk was born in Ceylon, Minn., on June 29, 1913, to Swedish immigrants Carl and Lucy (Hefinsky) Brandt. She was the oldest of three daughters. As a young girl, she and her sisters were separated and Flo was sent to live with a family near Lake Wilson, Minn.
She was educated through the eighth grade and was trained to be a switchboard operator for the telephone company in Lake Wilson, Minn.

In April of 1936, she married Vernon Fowser and they made their home in Lake Wilson. To this union was born one son, Robert Vernon. In June of 1940, Vernon died. Flo and her young son moved to Sherburn, Minn., in 1946 where she married Henry (Hank) Stolk. The family resided on a farm south of Sherburn until Hank's death in 1959.

Flo then moved to Laurens, Iowa, where she worked as a bookkeeper at the Farmer's Co-Op Elevator. In 1972, she moved to Forest City where she resided until her death.

Janice Broome

NORA SPRINGS - Janice Broome, 79, of 216 Fifth Street N.W., Nora Springs, passed away gently at home in the presence of family this past Wednesday evening June 13th.

A battle of more than three years with colon cancer took her life, but not her spirit.

Janice was always busy because something needed doing. A little impatient, and if you were around her she would quickly enlist you in whatever needed doing as well.

The 12th child of 15 children born to George Albertson and Bertha (Hanna) Albertson may be a reason why.

Born in Forest City on Nov. 1, 1932, she lived 79 years, seven months, 13 days.

As a child she enjoyed playing "Red Light" and "Captain Midnight" and many other such (outside) games with her siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She loved to run. At the age of 11 years she was deeply affected by the untimely death of her mother.

Then on July 30, 1949, Janice married Duane K. Broome of Britt. They took up residence in Clear Lake. Adding three children along the way: Wayne, Debra, and Colleen.

Janice later divorced and moved to Mason City where she worked at The Top Hat, Three Sisters and Piper Jaffray. But she most enjoyed her job as a driver for Purolator Courier Service. When they closed, she took up delivering Winnebago motor homes for a time. She also worked at Fieldstone Cabinets in Northwood, and The Hanford Inn. Her last job was working for the Petersen family of Nora Springs.

While traveling to Florida to see her longtime friend Marilyn, and Disney World, she gave her granddaughter Cassie Jo, some scary driving lessons. She was also known to sneak out to Vegas to spend time with her daughter, and granddaughters, but mostly for the slots! Most of her local slot time, though, she was accompanied by her dear friend Paula.

Janice was well-known as a good basketball referee critic. She was also known for her bargain hunting, cooking (especially her pies). As a good Norwegian, Janice felt the need to master crafts of various kinds so she could keep up with the many talents of her older sisters.

Janice is survived by her children: Wayne (Julie) Broome of Mason City, Debra Broome of Staten Island, N.Y., brother: George Elbert Albertson, Garner; sisters: Helen Tharon Steinmetz, Forest City, and Anna Mae Taylor, Mason City; hrandchildren: Tammy (Andy) Christensen, Jamie (Steve) Case, Cassie Jo (Matt) Wagner, Shane (Shanna) Askildson, Cymbria (Jason) Proceszyn, Tessa Billick. Great Grandchildren: Sheyanne, Breyden, Alexa, Kimberlyn, Aiden, Brennan, Kellen, and two buns in the oven; friends: Betty Lou Nelson, Britt, Marilyn Olsen, Ormond Beach, Fla., Irene Keeper, Mason City, Beth Parcher and Gladys Brallier, Nora Springs, and Paula Bishop Mason City, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding Janice in death: her parents George E Albertson and Bertha (Hanna) Albertson; daughter: Colleen; brothers: Harry Merle, James, Donald, Herbert, and Marlyn (Buddy); sisters: Juanita Lorraine Pletcher, Anita Marjorie Ellefson, Doris Mylinda, Doris Elaine Gunderson, Lois Ione Hanna, Mardelle Jeanette; grandson: Derek Blaine Askildson; great- granddaughter: Sierra Kay Ann Christensen.

Her last comment to Wayne: "I'm all right"

She was a good girl!

A special thanks to Iowa Hospice, especially Howard, Sally, Garla, and volunteer caregivers.

Joyce Ardell (Bork) McCready

Bolan - Joyce Ardell (Bork) McCready, 81, passed away on June 16, 2012, at Hospice of North Iowa.

She was born in Carpenter on Jan. 31, 1931, to Hedwig (Beyer) and Edwin Bork. Joyce graduated from Carpenter High School where she was proud to be on the basketball team that played in the state tournament. She became an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye men's basketball, rarely missing a game through the years and looked forward to discussing the games with her Aunt Ellie.

Joyce married Daryl McCready at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, on Nov. 27, 1949. The couple moved to their 80-acre homestead in Bolan, which became a Centennial Farm in 1990. Joyce was always an exceptional homemaker, wife and mother who took the extra time to find that perfect gift or card for her family. Joyce enjoyed colored glassware, decorating her home and loved flowers, butterflies, dolls, and Scrabble, which was coincidentally invented the year she was born. Joyce took trips to Hills garden center each spring for flowers and referred to it as "Heaven."

Joyce and Daryl renewed their vows again after 52 years of marriage. Daryl, the love of Joyce's life, passed on July 8, 2004. Her son Steve helped maintain the place after Daryl's passing, keeping all things beautiful; yard, flowers, garden ornaments.

Joyce loved spending time with family and friends. Many times she joined two best friends Ilene Milbrandt and Del-Rose Rosenberg, visiting malls and going out to lunch. Joyce's pride and joy were her three children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She felt blessed to have them and treasured the time spent with them and always spoiled them.

Joyce's claim to fame was the whole town of Bolan appearing on the David Letterman show in 1989. She loved to visit Branson, watch the spectacular shows and had pictures taken with Roy Clark, Mel Tillis, John Davidson and others. Joyce was nominated Grand Marshall of the Bolan Stand Still Parade in 2011 during Bolan's 125 year celebration.

Joyce was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Grafton since 1965. Her tombstone was personally designed in awaiting anticipation of her heavenly home.

Joyce is survived by her three children, Cheryl, (husband John) Thompson of Urbandale, David (wife Tammie) of Mason City, and Steve of Bolan; granddaughters (twins) Jennifer Thelen (Rob) and Michelle Brunk (Andy), Angie Thompson (fiancée Dean Sass), Shannon Duncan (Chris), and Jessie McCready; grandsons Jamie and Jeramie McCready; great-granddaughters Miranda and Bryant Thelen; great-grandsons Sterling and Avery Brunk; sister Janet Latshaw; sister-in law Doris McCready, as well as special aunts, nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband Daryl, parents Hattie (Hedwig) and Edwin Bork, her in-laws Anna and Blair McCready, brother in-laws Johnny Latshaw and Don McCready, daughter-in-law Kathie McCready, and niece Cindy Richards.

Visitation was Tuesday evening, June 19th from 5-7 p.m. at Schroeder and Sites Funeral home in St. Ansgar. The funeral is scheduled for today, Wednesday, June 20th, at 1 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Grafton, with Janet Dorenkamp officiating.
