- Longtime Sheffield resident Verda
Meyer, passed away Monday, June 4, 2012,
at the Sheffield Care Center at 97 years
of age.
Funeral services will be held 10:30
a.m., Thursday at Zion St. John Lutheran
Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. G. Kim
Wills presiding. A time of fellowship
will follow the funeral service at the
church. Interment will be at Hillside
Cemetery, Sheffield after the fellowship
time.
Verda Pauline Walker Meyer was born Oct.
18, 1914, on a farm south west of
Sheffield the daughter of Charles and
Addie (Engebretson) Walker. She attended
Richland Center country school through
the eighth grade. Verda was baptized and
confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.
Following school, she helped on the
family farm, and helping out where
needed.
On Feb. 14, 1936, Verda was united in
marriage with Willis W. Meyer in the St.
Paul Lutheran Church parsonage by the
Rev. E.H. Grummer. They made their home
on a farm north of Latimer for four
years until moving to the family farm
west of Sheffield.
In 1961, they moved into Sheffield where
they enjoyed camping with the River City
Roamers and Wig-Wam Wagon Campers,
spending many winters in Texas and
Florida.
Surviving family members include her
son: Merlin Meyer, Sheffield;
grandchildren: Randy (Deb) Meyer,
Sheffield; Julie (Mark) Dannen,
Sheffield; great-grandchildren: Eric (Brittnee)
Meyer and their children, Owen and
Anthany; Ashley Meyer and her daughter,
Sydney; Joshua (Amanda) Dannen; sister:
LaVera Bruns; brother: Clyde (Bernice)
Walker; sister-in-law: Minnie Meyer and
a host of friends.
Verda is preceded in death by her loving
husband of 59 years: Willis Meyer,
daughter-in-law: Karen Meyer, her
parents, three sisters and three
brother-in-laws, and a special friend

Gladys was born March 16, 1923, in
Corwith, the daughter of Glenn L. and
Esther B. (Anderson) Kimball. Her family
moved to Mason City when she was 3 years
old. Gladys graduated from Mason City
High School in 1941, and continued her
education and graduated from Hamilton
Business College. Gladys was united in
marriage to Charles J. Ringus Sr. on
June 22, 1946, in Mason City, and to
this union were born a son and daughter.
Over the years, Gladys worked for AARP
(secretarial) for six years and Damons
(clerk) for 18 years before retiring in
1989. She was baptized and confirmed
(1937) at Trinity Lutheran Church -
where she was a lifelong member. She was
also a member of various Women's Church
Circles and enjoyed volunteering in the
church office. She was an original
member of the 500 Club (39 years), and a
member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Gladys
enjoyed spending time with her
grandchildren and supporting them in
their sporting events. She especially
enjoyed spending time with her
great-grandchildren.
Gladys is survived by her son: Charles
J. Ringus and wife Lana of Clear Lake;
daughter: Susan C. Wilt and husband Bill
of Fremont, Neb.; four grandchildren:
Abby Ringus Hill and husband Vince of
Eldridge, Jay Wilt and wife Michelle of
Wahoo, Neb., Jared Ringus and wife Lisa
of West Des Moines, and Lexy Wilt
Baughman and husband Willie of Fremont;
and four great-grandchildren: Jaxsen and
Kellen Wilt - both of Wahoo, Delaney
Hill of Eldridge, and Colton Ringus of
West Des Moines. She is also survived by
one sister-in-law: Arlys Kimball of
Mason City, and one brother: Glenn
Kimball Jr.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, her former husband, two
brothers: Gene Kimball (in World War
II), and Vernon "Mugs" Kimball.

KANAWHA - Merle Rust, 80, of Kanawha,
passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012.
Merle was cremated, according to his
wishes. A memorial service will be held
on Friday, June 8, at 10:30 a.m. at
Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East Second
Street, in Kanawha, with Pastor Tim
Rieckhoff-Faris officiating.
Inurnment will be at Amsterdam Township
Cemetery in Kanawha. Military graveside

Merle was born to Raymond and Agnes Rust
Aug. 14, 1931, on the family farm, in
Kanawha.
He graduated from Kanawha High School in
1948 and was in the Army from 1950
through 1952. He served his country in
Okinawa as an electrician.
Merle returned home to farm the family
farm. In 1955 he married Carla Studer.
Later he worked for Kraft Hardware and
Farmers Elevator. Merle also helped his
special friend, Larry Anderson, during
harvest time.
Gardening (sharing his produce with
friends), hunting and fishing were the
interests that brought him joy.
Merle is survived by sister-in-law,
Harriet Rust of Mason City; nephew,
Terry Rust of Minn.; niece, Kathi Heady
of Colo.; nephew, Jeff Rust of Colo.;
and niece, Jean Wilcox of Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
wife, and brothers, Leonard, Richard and
Jerry.

Irene Carrie Groven, daughter of Carl
and Carrie (Hartman) Niles, was born
Aug. 7, 1920, in Mason City. She
attended Plymouth schools where she
lived on the family farm. While in grade
school, Irene was the first ever to
receive a first-place prize in her drama
class.
Irene met Roy Groven at the Sugar Beet
and was united in marriage on Dec. 22,
1941. To this union, they were blessed
with five children, William, Shirley,
Carrie, Roy and Deborah. Irene was a
homemaker all of her life, taking care
of her family.
Irene was a selfless person who loved
and cared for her family and friends.
She was one that enjoyed spending time
with people, having everyone over who
she provided company to. Her passion was
birds, both feeding and watching them,
along with gardening, canning and
raising chickens and geese when she was
younger.
Irene will be missed by her children,
Roy (Jean) Groven, Mason City, and their
children, Emerald (David) Anderson and
Ford Groven; Shirley (Ron) Poole, Clear
Lake; Carrie Hardy, St. Cloud, Minn.,
and her children, Roy (Diane) Flores,
Michelle Flores and Guadalupe Flores;
and Deborah (Jerry) Smith, Mason City,
and their children, Randy (Desiree)

with Irene's three other grandchildren,

- Frederick Armin "Freddie" Loats, age
78, of Belmond, most recently a resident
of the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond,
died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at the
Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

June 10, 2 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran
Church, Belmond. The Reverend Troy

Frederick Armin was born May 26, 1934,
to Benjamin Andrew and Viola Katherine (Mennenga).
Fred graduated from Belmond High School
in 1952. Fred was enlisted in the United
States Air Force where he served for
four years in the active service with a
year serving in Korea. Fred also served
four years in the reserves. Fred was
honored in the Air Force with the award
of airman of the month.
Following his service Fred was united in
marriage on Nov. 12, 1960, at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Belmond to Constance
"Connie" Gabrielson. This union was
blessed with three children, Jeffrey,
Mark and Daniel.
Fred was a hard-working gentleman. He
worked eight years for the Chicago Great
Northwestern Railroad. Following his
work for the railroad he worked for
Purina and Kent Feeds. At Kent Feeds he
attained the position of being a
district manager. Freddie spent several
years as a car salesman for the
McLaughlin Chevrolet as well as a
salesman for Farmers Grain. Fred then
continued his working career as he
worked for five years for the Eaton
Corporation in Belmond.
In Freddie's earlier years he was an
avid outdoorsman and loved to go on
fishing excursions to Minnesota with his
family. He was an excellent hunter and
known not to miss a shot at a pheasant.
Fred was also known for his amazing shot
at golf, he had the smooth swing that
was adored by many. When Fred was not
found on the golf course he could be
found in the clubhouse playing a game of
pool, being nearly unbeatable. Fred's
love for sports carried with him his
entire life as he was a devoted Packers
fan and passionate St. Louis Cardinals
baseball fan. He enjoyed spending time
at home with his pet cat named "Cat."
Fred was a brutally honest man who would
definitely give you an argument to
support his opinion on any subject. He
also had a very charming side that could
always make up for an occasional slip of
the tongue.
The love and memories will be cherished
in the hearts of his friends and family:

children Jeffrey, Mindy, Aimee, all from
Belmond; Dan (Tonya) of Redding, Calif.,

BURNSVILLE,
Minn. - James L. McClung, 86, of
Burnsville, passed away on Sunday, June
3, 2012, surrounded by his family after
a short battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
Leone and Chet, and three brothers,
John, Barry and Chuck, all of Mason
City, Iowa. He is survived by his
sister, Rosemary, and by his wife,
Beverly, with whom he just celebrated
his 60th wedding anniversary. He also is
survived by his children, Melinda (Duane
Hiemenz), Mark, and Michelle (Lee Kump);
seven grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Jim attended St. Joseph School in Mason
City and graduated from the University
of Iowa. He served in the Air Force in
World War II and was stationed in Guam
for two years. For 50 years he traveled
for United Bulb, selling bulb stock to
florists.
He had fond memories of hunting with his
five friends over the years. Jim was an
avid reader, he loved dogs and there
wasn't anything he couldn't build. He
had a great sense of humor and loved to
tease his grandchildren.
According to Jim's wishes, the family
held a private service. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to
the Humane Society or to North
Memorial's Hospice Care Unit.
The family would like to thank the staff
at Diamondcrest at The Wellstead of
Rogers, as well as the Hospice Staff at
North Memorial for all of their
wonderful and attentive care they

Wayne was born Nov. 23, 1929, in
Hampton, the son of Albert and Minnie (Olk)
Rathmann. He grew up on the family farm
and graduated from Hampton High School
in 1947. Wayne married Jeanyce Johnson
on April 6, 1957, in Mason City. On Dec.
27, 1950, Wayne enlisted in the U.S.
Navy. He served his country for three
years during the Korean War as a
Machinery Repairman Second Class.
Over the years, Wayne worked for the
State Brand Creamery, Iowa Hardware
Mutual - which later became Iowa Kemper
Insurance Company, Calahan Walters
Insurance and Plumb Supply. He would try
and fix anything that was broke. If he
couldn't fix it, he would make something
to fix it. Wayne enjoyed fishing,
bowling, camping, golfing, dancing,
scroll saw work, fixing clocks and
spending time in his shop. He also built
riding lawn mowers and a pontoon. Wayne
was a member of Wesley United Methodist
Church.
Over the years he has been active in
Toastmasters, Junior Achievement, the
Rotary Cannonball, Evening Lions Club,
the Senior Citizen Center and the Kinney
Pioneer Museum.
Wayne is survived by two daughters: Kay
Rathmann of Mason City and Lea Baker and
husband Chris of Mason City; two
granddaughters, Brittany Baker and
fiancé Michael Beeler of Ames, and
Sydney Baker of Mason City; special
friend, Shirley Hansen of Mason City;
sister, Helen Stauffacher of Bensalem,
Pa.; and brother-in-law, Lloyd Maifield
of Hampton. He is also survived by
nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife Jeanyce in 2001; sister,
Lillian Maifield; brother-in-law, Dick

- Ilene Ring, 74, passed away at the
Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center
in Riceville on Monday, June 4, 2012,
after a courageous battle with cancer.

Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, on
Friday, June 8 at 11 a.m. with the Rev.
Tom Wegener officiating.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran
Cemetery in Riceville. Friends may call

Riceville during the hours of 4-7 p.m.
on Thursday and one hour before services
at the church.
Ilene Ann (Roe) Ring was born on April
19, 1938, the daughter of Theodore and
Inez (Iverson) Roe, in rural Mitchell
County. Ilene was baptized and confirmed
in the Lutheran faith. She attended
country school for two years then moved
to McIntire and graduated in 1956. She
worked in the Snack Shop in Osage while
in high school. After graduation Ilene
moved to Mason City. On May 3, 1958, she
was united in marriage to Wilford Ring.
They farmed together for 50-plus years.
Ilene worked for Comprehensive Systems
for 10 years.
Ilene enjoyed spending time with family
and the many vacations they spent
together. She attended all of the school
activities of her children and
grandchildren. Ilene enjoyed traveling
the countryside with her husband.
She enjoyed reading and rummage sales.
She also enjoyed an occasional trip to
the casino. Ilene was always happy when
family came to enjoy a meal together.
Survivors include her husband, Wilford
Ring of McIntire; one daughter, Deanna
(Raymond) Fjetland of Racine, Minn.;
three sons, David of McIntire, Daniel
(Michele) of Elma and Robby (Amy) of
Osage; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Ring
of Ormond Beach, Fla.; 14 grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; a sister,
Darlene Betts of Mason City; and a
brother, Wendell Roe of Mason City.

Chris was born Nov. 21, 1959, in
Waukegan, Ill. the son of Carl L. and
Catherine (Murtaugh) Crotty.
He enlisted in the United States Army.
After the service he worked as a cook in
restaurants in the Clear Lake area.
Chris's greatest joy in life was
spending time with his son, Dylan.
Chris is survived by his father, Carl

- Robert Haupt, 91, of Belmond died
Monday, June 4, 2012, at the Belmond
Medical Center.
Funeral services for Robert Haupt were
held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at the
United Methodist Church in Belmond.
Pastor Cindy Morrison officiated. Burial
was at the Graceland Cemetery west of
Rowan.
Visitation for Robert Haupt was held
from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the
Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane
South in Belmond, and continued one hour
prior to services at the church.
Robert, the son of Frank and Katherine
(Kate) Smith Haupt, was born July 22,
1920, on a farm between Rowan and
Belmond. He grew up in that area where
he attended country school.
Robert, was united in marriage to Leona
E. Bailey on Feb. 8, 1942, at the
Methodist Parsonage in Rowan. The couple
made their home on a farm north of
Rowan. Robert farmed his entire working
life. He retired in 1973 when he and
Leona built a house and moved into
Belmond.
Robert is remembered for his meticulous
care of his home, cars, yard and garden.
A very active person his entire life,
Bob will most be remembered for riding
his bike on the bike trail into his late
80s. Robert was a member of the United
Methodist Church in Belmond.
Robert is survived by his son, Verle and
wife, Linda of Jewell; granddaughter,
Sara and four great-grandchildren all of
Ames; three sisters, Wilma Friesleben
and husband Hartley of Clarion, Lorraine
Johnson of Iowa Falls and Helen Ahrens
of Rowan; two brothers, Raymond and wife
Artherine of Dows and Duane and wife
Darilyn of Dows; plus numerous other
nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents;
wife, Leona; son, Norman; two sisters,
Mildred and Minnie; and four brothers,
Ed, Alvin, Bernard and Donnie; and a
half-brother, Leo Smith.

Gladys was born April 22, 1920, in
Larrabee the daughter of Charles and

Gladys married Ralph E. Hull on June 30,
1941, in Omaha, Neb.
Gladys worked for the Singer Company for
31 years, retiring in 1978. While at
Singer, she worked in sales and taught
sewing. She moved from Cherokee, Iowa,
to Mason City in 1963. Gladys enjoyed
sewing and having family and friends
over for coffee and treats. The family
would like to "thank" Good Shepherd
Heath Center and Iowa Hospice for the
care Gladys received.
Gladys is survived by her daughters,
Arvella (Louis) Henderson of Albert Lea,
Minn., and Sheryl (Fred) Kramer of Mason

the Kanawha Community Home.

Ethelene, the daughter of Robert and
Iredell Privette Ward, was born March
24, 1938, in Franklin County, N.C. She
was baptized in the Rock Spring Baptist
Church. Ethelene graduated from Bunn
High School in 1956 where she loved
playing basketball. She then attended
and graduated from Park View Hospital
School of Nursing three-year RN program
in 1959.
In 1960, Ethelene married Gene Hall of
Britt. The couple made their home in the
Kanawha and Britt area where Ethelene
worked part-time at HCMH.
To this union two children were born,
Elizabeth Ann and Scott Duane. In 1966,
the family moved to Oxford, North
Carolina, where Ethelene supervised a
medical clinic at Murdoch Center in
Butner, N.C.
The family returned to the Kanawha area
in 1975, and the following year Ethelene
started working at the Kanawha Community
Home as Director of Nursing. She enjoyed
the residents, families and co-workers.
Many hours were enjoyed attending the
activities of her children.
Ethelene was united in marriage to Lewis
"Junior" Jackson on November 18, 1988.
They liked spending time together
dancing and going on fishing trips up
north.
Ethelene was a member of the United
Methodist Church in Kanawha where she
was active with the United Methodist
Women. She loved cooking, spending time
with her family, making cookies with her
grandchildren, reading and working with
flowers.
Ethelene is survived by her husband,
Lewis "Junior," of Kanawha; daughter,
Beth Burrs of Britt; daughter-in-law
Jamie Hall of North Carolina;
step-daughter Janet (Vern) Dietel of

M. "Curly" Richard
AREDALE
- Jeane M. "Curly" Richard, 90, lifelong
resident of Aredale, died Wednesday,
June 6, 2012, at the Sheffield Care
Center in Sheffield.
A graveside memorial service will be
held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, at
the Harlan Cemetery, rural Dumont, with
Chaplain Janet Dorenkamp officiating.
Military honors will be provided by
members of the American Legion in
Dumont.

left in Jeane's name in care of his
family.
Jeane Marvin Richard was born at his
family's home in Aredale on June 21,
1921, the youngest of six children born
unto Ed and Bessie (Bushbaum) Richard.
He attended and graduated from Aredale
High School.
On June 17, 1942, Jeane was inducted
into the United States Air Force where
he honorably served his country during
World War II as an aerial gunner on a
B25 airplane. While in the Air Force
Jean was awarded two Bronze Stars and
was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Jeane was honorably discharged from the
Air Force on July 12, 1945.
In his younger years Jeane enjoyed
traveling and even rode his Indian
motorcycle coast to coast following his
return from the war. Jeane could often
be found tinkering around or woodworking
in his shop and also loved fishing. He
was currently Aredale's oldest and
longest-living resident, having been
born, raised and living in Aredale his
entire life; he was just two weeks shy
of his 91st birthday.
In 1958 Jeane was united in marriage to
Marie Vinson at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua. They were blessed with 36
years of marriage before Marie preceded
Jeane in death in 1994.
Over the years Jeane dug ditches for
tiling, operated a construction
business, hauled LP gas for Davis Oil
and ran the pool hall and tavern in
Aredale. He was a proud member of the
Disabled Veterans of America and the
American Legion Post in Dumont.
Jeane is survived by his step-daughter,
Virginia DeBerg and her husband Keith,
Osceola; his granddaughters, Debra
DeBerg, Aredale, and Lisa (Kim) Allyn,
Santa Cruz, Calif.; his
great-granddaughter, Ashley (Tim) Harles,
Oroville, California; two
great-great-granddaughters, Arianna and
Jordyn Harles; and several nieces and
nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents,
his wife, Marie, his great
granddaughter, Stacey Hernandez, three
brothers, two sisters and a nephew, Jack
Richard.

Jurn was born Aug. 19, 1927, the son of
Hi and Marie (Weaverling) Rieman. He
graduated from Rudd High School in 1945.
On Oct. 27, 1946, he married Mary Jane
Stromley at Eden Presbyterian Church.
Jurn started farming and then worked for
a grain elevator, the co-op tank wagon
and Armour. From 1976 until 1989 he
managed motels.
Jurn was a member of Eden Presbyterian
Church. He enjoyed bowling, dancing with
his wife, watching his children in
sports and spending time with his
family. He also enjoyed the Hawkeyes and
the Twins.
Jurn is survived by his wife, Mary Jane
Rieman of Rudd; his children, Dennis
Rieman and special friend, Bonny Derr,
of Rudd, Darwin Rieman of Rockford,
Delmer and Kris (Hanson) Rieman of
Newell, Douglas Rieman of Newell, Donald
Rieman of Newell, Candace Eimers and

Born in Mason City, Sept. 30, 1931, to
Donald Romain and Marian (Jones) Davis,
Betty was a 1949 graduate of Mason City
High School. During her lifetime, she
worked as a nurse's aide and also for a
telephone company and The Des Moines
Register.
Betty met her future husband while
working as a nurse's aide at the Park
Hospital in Mason City where her ill
father and future husband shared the
same hospital room. Betty was united in
marriage on Oct. 21, 1950, to Richard
Paul Smith, LTC Ret., who preceded her
in death in 2005.
During Betty's life, she was foremost a
military wife and mother. The military
life took Betty and her family to
Indiana, Georgia, Hawaii and Iowa.
During these years, seven children were
born to Betty and Dick. Three children
survive, Betty, Laurie (Craig) Ryan,
Barbara (Jim) Gamble and Mark (LuAnn)
Smith, along with three sisters, Carol,
Sharon and Lois. Four children preceded
her in death, Paul Leslie, Brian Scott,
Randall Bruce and Penelope Lynn. Also
preceding her are four siblings,
Marilyn, Richard, Leslie and Bob.
Grandma Betty's greatest legacy is her
three children, 12 grandchildren and 26
great-grandchildren with which she
shared kindness, love, wisdom, humor and
patience. She was there for all of us
and we considered her "God's gift to
us."

Weingart passed away Wednesday, June 6,
2012, at his home surrounded by his
family at the age of 85.
A funeral mass for John will be held at

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 North
Broadway Street, Manly, with Rev.
Kenneth Gehling officiating. Burial will
be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery
in Manly with military honors conducted
by members of the Edward Tosel American
Legion Post #110 of Manly and Our
Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of
Northwood.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m.
Friday with a Scriptural Wake service at
6 p.m. at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110
East Spring Street, Manly.

John Ronald Weingart was born on Oct.
12, 1926, in Manly, the sixth son of
John and Myrtle (Schrow) Weingart. He
attended school in Manly.
In 1943, after his 17th birthday, he
enlisted in the Navy. He was a signalman
in service as an Armed Guard on the
Merchant Marine Ship SS Francisco
Morazan. During the Korean War he
enlisted in the Army to serve his
country as Chief High Speed Radio
Operator. He was discharged as Sergeant
First Class in 1952, serving his country
honorably and faithfully. John earned
Commendation and a Battle Star during
his years of military service.
When he returned to the States, John was
united in marriage to Margaret L. Butler
on Nov. 1, 1952, at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Manly and to this
union three children were born, Cynthia,
Daryl and Brad.
John worked on the Rock Island railroad.
He worked a variety of jobs through the
years, retiring as a conductor in 1980
after working for the Rock Island for 30
years. Railroading was a vocation his
father had chosen before him, and both
of his sons and one grandson have also
followed that path.
Even though John dropped out of school
to join the service, education was
always important to him. He encouraged
his three children to attend college and
did the same with his grandchildren. In
1982, John went back to school and
earned his high school equivalency
diploma.
John was a lifetime member of Sacred
Heart Catholic Church, the Brotherhood
of Railroad Trainmen, Our Buddies VFW
Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood and the
Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110
of Manly.
Throughout the years, John has enjoyed
fishing trips "up north" to Minnesota
with friends and family. He especially
enjoyed those times with his
grandchildren. He liked to watch Major
League baseball - usually Margaret's
favorite team the Minnesota Twins.
He was an avid reader and like watching
westerns. It was not unusual to find him
on his computer, exploring the Internet,
playing cribbage, checking email or
talking to family on SKYPE.
John will be greatly missed by his
family and friends.
Those left to cherish John's memory are
his wife of almost 60 years, Margaret of
Manly; daughter, Cyndi (Jack) Morton of
Clive; two sons, Daryl (Donna) and Brad
(Vicki) both of Alliance, Neb.; six
grandchildren, Andy (Ashley) of
Alliance, Neb., Matt (Jamie) of Laramie,
Wyo., Jessica (Patrick) Mulhern, Kylen
Weingart, Connor Weingart and Mary
Weingart, all of Alliance, Neb.; four
great-grandchildren, Ava Weingart of
Alliance, Neb., Reese Weingart of
Laramie, Wyo., Anden Weingart of
Alliance, Neb., and Lawson Weingart of
Laramie, Wy., and in June a new baby boy
Weingart of Alliance, Neb., will be
born; two sisters, Kathryn Horeth of
Mason City and Janelle (Mike) Relic of
Oceanside, Calif.; two sisters-in-laws,
Gen Methus and Shirley (Norman) Olson,
all of Northwood; several nieces and
nephews, as well as many other extended
family members and friends.
Loved ones who have preceded John in

Fannie was born June 23, 1921, in rural
Kanawha, the daughter of Erick and Anna
(Eenhuis) Olthoff. She attended country
school in rural Kanawha. Fannie married
Elery F. Zeigler on May 6, 1943, at
Wesley United Methodist Church, where
she was a longtime member. Fannie
enjoyed the outdoors and tending to her
flower and vegetable gardens. She also
enjoyed volunteer work for Congregate
Meals. Family was very important to her
- especially her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Fannie is survived by two daughters,
Wanda Fistler and husband Steve of Mason
City, and Judy Marquardt and husband
Chuck of Mason City; six grandchildren,
Angela Walker and husband Tony of Mason
City, Julie Fistler of Mason City, and
Ben Fistler and wife Katie of Mason
City, Fred Marquardt of Des Moines,
Corey Marquardt and fiancée Rebecca Hass
of Des Moines, and Drew Marquardt of
West Des Moines; seven
great-grandchildren, Brennan and Parker
Dondlinger, Alissa, Zachary and Kayden
Walker, Grace Marquardt and Henry
Fistler. She is also survived by three
special nieces: Bev Ames of Garner,
Chris Bruggeman of Garner and Dorothy
Dudgeon of Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband in 1994; four
sisters, Grace, Henrietta, Annie and
Elsie; and five brothers, John, Eric,
Raymond, Fred and Erick (in infancy).

Mason City, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012,
at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
on Sunday, June 10, at Our Saviour's
Lutheran Church, 2502 South Jefferson
Avenue with the Rev. Emily Horrell
officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7
p.m. today, Saturday, June 9, at Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N.

hour prior to the church service.
Interment will be at Memorial Park
Cemetery.

Clarence was born Sept. 23, 1917, in
Rock Falls, the son of John and Carolina
(Wohlert) Christiansen. He attended
school in Rock Falls. Clarence enlisted
in the U.S. Army on May 10, 1941. He
served as a Pfc. overseas - during World
War II, and was injured in action three
times before his honorable discharge on
May 16, 1943.
Clarence married Evelyn I. Miller on
Sept. 26, 1944, at the First Christian
Church in Mason City.
He worked as a mechanic at Floyd and
Leonard for 38 years before his
retirement.
Clarence was a member of Our Saviour's
Lutheran Church, the American Legion,
Moose Lodge, VFW, and DAV. He enjoyed
fishing, hunting, and gardening.
Clarence is survived by his wife of 67
years: Evelyn Christiansen of Mason
City; one son: Gary Christiansen of
Mason City; two daughters: Linda
Defenbaugh of West Des Moines, and Julie
Harms of Summerville, S.C.; five
grandchildren: Amanda Belcher and
husband Darren of Lake Orion, Mich.,
Angela Essink and husband Troy of West
Des Moines, Janelle Harms of Britt,
Shane Defenbaugh of Des Moines, and
Stacey Harmes of Summerville; Janelle,
Stacey, Amanda, Angela and Shane; and
two great-grandchildren: Devan
Defenbaugh and Courtney Bloodgood.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his stepmother: Meta Christiansen; four
sisters: Viola Bailey, Minna Stupka,
Elsie Tibbits, Luella Wyborny Kaldenberg;
one brother: Leonard Christiansen; and
three stepbrothers: Arnold Petersen, Art
Petersen, and Bill Carson Petersen.

- Robert "Bob" L. Summers, age 85, of
Belmond, died, Wednesday, June 6, 2012,
at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond,
Belmond, surrounded by his loving
family.
Service celebrating the life of Bob will
be held Monday, June 11, 2 p.m., at the
Evangelical Free Church of Belmond. The
Reverend Pat Kennedy will be
officiating, assisted by Mr. Stan Watne.
Interment with full military honors
provided by the Belmond Military Unit
will be at the St. Francis Catholic
Cemetery near Belmond.

Robert Leroy Summers was born near
Fertile on Nov. 15, 1926, to Hiram and
Gladys (Roseland) Summers. Bob graduated
from Belmond High School in 1944.
Following high school, Bob served in the
United States Navy, proudly serving his
country from 1945-1949. Following his
military tenure, Robert was united in
marriage with the love of his life,
Carolyn Jones. This marriage was blessed
with five children: Antoinette "Toni",
Linda, Duane, Richard and Mitchell.
Bob was an active member in the
community of Belmond, serving in many
ways. He loved to give back to his town.
He was well known for his involvement of
the Belmond Ambulance and Belmond
Volunteer Fire Department as a member of
both organizations for many years.
Bob had the mind of an engineer he
always inventing or trying to improve
some tool or create his next new toy.
When Bob was not working on his next
invention, he might be found at
Sparetime Lanes, bowling with the Senior
League. For many years Bob's friendly
wave might be seen in the Belmond's 4th
of July celebration. He often drove for
local car dealers and Emergency Vehicle
Sales and Service of Alexander he was an
enthusiastic supporter of his family's
activities. In earlier years Bob enjoyed
the rush and excitement of racing
hydroplane boats. Bob truly cherished
times with his family. From his subtle
smile to the twinkle in his eye, he
relished each opportunity to be with
them, even to the last moments of his
life journey in their presence.
The love and memories will continue on
in hearts of his family.
Robert is survived by his wife of 59
years Carolyn Summers; Toni (Murray)
Lindstrom of Ely; Linda (James) Boyd of
Belmond; sons Richard (Lucinda) Summers
and Mitchell (Cindy) Summers both of
Belmond; sisters Bernadine (Robert)

- Mildred Kreitlow, 93, of Kanawha,
passed away Thursday, June 7, 2012, at
the Kanawha Community Home.

Mildred Marie Kreitlow, the daughter of
William C. and Emma (Kroll-Lenz) Rockow,
was born on Aug. 2, 1918, in Alexander.
She received her education in country
schools and graduated from Garner High
School in 1935.
On Oct. 2, 1940, she was united in
marriage to Lee Wallace Kreitlow at her
parents' home in the Dows/Galt area. The
couple farmed north of Garner until
moving to Kanawha in 1946. They farmed
east of Kanawha until 1980. In their
retirement, Mildred and Wallace enjoyed
traveling, visiting their children and
grandchildren.
Wallace passed away in 1985 and Mildred
remained on the home place for a few
more years. In 1988, she moved in to
town.
Mildred was an active and faithful
member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church,
where she taught Sunday school, played
piano and was a member of ALCW. She
enjoyed quilting, being a 4-H leader,
helping on the farm, bowling and card
clubs. Mildred was always a great
hostess always trying to feed you.
Mildred is survived by her son, Harley
(Marcia) Kreitlow of Kanawha; daughters,
Janaan Wiegand of Ankeny and Rebecca
(Ron) Swaney of Marshall, Mich.;
son-in-law, Jim Stroud of Des Moines;
grandchildren: Douglas (Diana) Kreitlow,
Patricia Kreitlow (Rob Graham), Tara
(Mike) Finke, Lana (Brad) Overturf,
Russell Swaney, Ray Swaney and Rhonda
Swaney (David Bowers);
step-grandchildren: Jerry (Sherri)

- Ernest "Ernie" A. Molitor passed away
at age 87, on June 7, 2012, at his
residence in rural Floyd surrounded by
family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held
10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, at
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery,
Charles City, with military honors
conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial
Unit.
Friends may greet the family 4-8 p.m.

Charles City, where there will be a 4
p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue an
hour prior to Mass at the church on

Ernie was born March 1, 1925, at Remsen,
the son of Charles and Anna Marie
(Clemens) Molitor, the fifth of ten
children. The family moved to a farm at
Ashton in 1927 where he acquired a love
of farming. He graduated from St. Joseph
Catholic School in Ashton, and was a
member of the school's state
championship basketball team.
In World War II, Ernie served overseas
in the U.S. military with four of his
brothers. After being honorably
discharged with a rank of staff sergeant
from the Army, he returned home to
Ashton to farm with his brother John.
On April 19, 1950, Ernie and Alvina
Odens were wed in Sibley. They raised
five sons and one daughter. In 1958,
they purchased their farm at Floyd. They
moved to Floyd in 1968 after residing in
LeMars for 10 years, where he sold
securities for Investors Diversified
Services. He was proud of the fact that
he improved the farm and strived to be a
good steward of the land. Ernie retired
in 1983, but remained on the farm with
Alvina until his death.
Ernie was a member of Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, the Knights
of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign War in
Charles City, and numerous service
organizations throughout his life.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 62
years, Alvina; his children, Gary
(Brenda Martin) of Mason City, Glenn
(Charlene Droste) of Mason City, Mark
(Lydia Pacheco) of Saint Augustine,
Fla., James (Tami Otto) of Charles City,
Mary Ann (Bruce Hunt) of Pierre, S.D.,
Steven Molitor of Charles City; 18
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren;
two siblings, Theresa (Marvin) Dammann
of Little Rock, Dale (Jane) Molitor of
Worthington, Minn.; two sisters-in-law;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
five brothers; two sisters.
Ernie's priorities in life were first
his family, faith, work, and his
country. The family would like to
express their gratitude to Ernie's
healthcare provider and friend, Candy
Schoba, and for the assistance provided
by Hospice of North Iowa.

Mabelle Julia Roben
ROCKWELL - Graveside
services for Mabelle Julia Roben (née
Kotz), will be held on Saturday, June
16, 2012, at 3 p.m. in Rockwell
Cemetery, Rockwell.
Mabelle Julia Roben died at the age of
92 years in Appleton, Wis., where she
had resided for the past nine years.
She was born on a farm outside of Clear
Lake to Louis and Tilda (Ashland) Kotz,
the second of six children. She
graduated from Mason City High School in
1938. She attended Iowa Teachers College
(the University of Northern Iowa) in
Cedar Falls and graduated from Mason
City Junior College with a degree in
education. After teaching grades one
through eight in several country schools
in Cerro Gordo County, she left her
career to marry Glen Roben of Rockwell.
Together they farmed near Sheffield for
over 50 years and raised four children:
Gerald (Sue Vega) of Bellevue, Iowa,
Glennys (Robert Compton) of Columbia,
S.C., Gail (Larry Johnson) of Butte des
Morts, Wis., and Gregory (Monica Natzke)
of Oconomowoc, Wis.
Mabelle and Glen enjoyed fishing,
camping and travel as well as community,
church, and civic activities. She served
as co-leader of the Geneseo Cloverettes
4-H Club, president of the local
Federated Women's Club, northern Iowa
district officer for WELCA as well as
president of St Peter's Lutheran
Church's WELCA. She was always willing
to take a leadership role in activities
sponsored by organizations like the
Rockwell Lions Club, Cerro Gordo county
4-H and Farm Bureau. She taught Sunday
School and summer Bible School for years
at her church.
She and Glen were the host family for
Rockwell- Swaledale School's foreign
exchange student from Chile (Fernando
Navarro) in 1967. Through all of these
activities and roles, both Mabelle and
her husband set examples for their
family on the importance of community
involvement and the richness of an
active life.
In 2003, Mabelle and Glen left their
beloved Iowa to be closer to their
children in Wisconsin. She enjoyed her
years in Appleton at the Heritage in the
Woods community. She made many new
friends and loved spending time on the
deck of her daughter and son-in -law's
home looking out over Lake Butte des
Morts.
Mabelle leaves behind her four devoted
children and their families, including
eleven grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. She is also
survived by brothers Earl, Clear Lake,
and Edward (Grinnell) Kotz and sister
Doris Creager, Florence, Ore., as well
as many nieces and nephews. She will be
greatly missed but they know she has
gone into the loving arms of others who
have gone before, including her parents,
two brothers Stanley and Wilbur Kotz,
and husband Glen.
The family wishes to thank the Rockwell
community for their continued caring,
the Heritage community in Appleton,
Wis., for their friendship and
assistance, and the Theda Care Hospice
program of Appleton for their most
recent support.

An open house reception will be held at

Ray Donald Steward was born March 4,
1924, in Auburn, Ind., the son of Arthur
and Stella (Blair) Steward. He graduated
from Auburn High School in 1942.
On Nov. 28, 1942, he was united in
marriage to Hildamae Mitchner at St.
Mark's Lutheran Church in Auburn. To
this union, three children were born.
Ray was inducted into the United States
Army on Jan. 6, 1943, and served as a
private until he was honorably
discharged. After returning from his
service, he began work for International
Harvester as a draftsman. He then began
working for the Dana Corporation,
working on Indy 500 cars. Ray began
working as a mechanical engineer
employed by the J.I. Case Company. This
career led him to Charles City, where he
worked for Oliver from 1962 until his
retirement in 1989. In his free time, he
would often be found golfing with his
son Pat or his friends. He enjoyed
watching high school girls softball,
listening to music, and drawing. Ray had
the longest continuous membership to the
American Legion, was a foster
grandparent, and also served on their
advisory board for over 22 years.
Living family members include three
children, Pat Steward, Toni Pieper, both
of Charles City, Amy (Randy) Caster of
Plainfield; three grandchildren, Joseph
(Stephanie) Acord of Oklahoma City,
Okla., James Acord of Norman, Okla.,
Brent Steward of Charles City; three
great-grandchildren, Courtney, Cadon,
and Marissa; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife, Hildamae in 2007; a sister,
Thelma Deihl; a brother, James in
infancy; and a son-in-law, Bob Pieper.
