Betty L. Cole

BELMOND - Betty L, Cole, age 70, of Belmond, died unexpectedly on June 6, 2012, at the Belmond Medical Center, Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 304 Third Ave. N.E., Belmond. The Rev. Troy Pflibsen will be officiating. Inurnment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, Monday, June 11, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Street S.E., Belmond, and continues one hour prior to the services at church Tuesday.

Public viewing will only take place today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed in Betty's memory to the family, 311 River Ave., Belmond, IA 50421.
Betty Lauden, the daughter of Walter Henry and Clara (Larson) Lauden, was born Jan. 20, 1942, at Goodell. She was baptized and confirmed in her childhood at the Reformed Church in Klemme. Betty grew up in the Goodell area and attended schools there. She graduated from Klemme High School, Klemme, with the Class of 1959.

Following high school, Betty worked and attended college in Northwest Minneapolis, Minn., where she was trained in nursing. She later became a bookkeeper and was licensed as a tax preparer, owning her own business during her years in South Carolina.

Betty was united in marriage to Charles "Chuck" F. Cole, in December of 1966. Their union was blessed with three children: Tammy, John, and James.

Followng their marriage, the couple lived in and raised their children in various places, where Chuck's Air Force career took them, including a number of years in Hokkaido, Japan, where he was stationed during his military tenure. After 22 years in the service, Chuck and Betty settled in Sacramento, Calif. Eventually, in 1990, the family returned to Belmond, when Betty's mother entered the health care center.

They later owned and operated the C & G Motel, after purchasing it from Edith Hill. A while later, they became proprietors of the CBJ Autowash on Highway 69 in Belmond.

Betty and Chuck purchased a home on Lake Cornelia between Belmond and Clarion and relished many wonderful times at the "Lake Place", spending time cruising about and fishing on their pontoon. The couple enjoyed square dancing in earlier years and the adventures of their travels, as well as swapping customs with others in their home during their years in the military.

Betty truly looked forward to any occasion that meant being in the presence of her family. She was very proud of each and every one of them and would often bring other young people under her wing as their "Adopted Grandma". Betty truly was a people person who had a huge heart, often putting the needs of others, including those who were complete strangers, before her own needs. Her door was always open no matter where she lived and her family recalls countless times where she would provide shelter, food, and money for people she had never met before, trusting them with completely open arms. Her family recalls when RAGBRAI made a trek through town and Betty's yard and home was filled with dozens of tents, bikes and bikers.

A favorite past time of Betty's was working over one of her "Bunka" designs, a Japanese craft that almost no one else in the United States knew how to do. Her family will be able to cherish various designs that she created with her loving hands. Some of her work had even been in magazines featuring the "Bunka" craft.

Betty was an avid WWE fan whose favorite wrestlers included Vern Gagne and "The Crusher". She was known to get truly excited watching that wrestling action. She also looked forward to spectating Roller Derby events. Betty enjoyed the simple pleasures of life such as playing cards, working in her garden and flowers, watching the birds and other wildlife, looking after the pet birds, and going on dining out excursions with Chuck and family. She was always up for a good visit with friends and relatives.

As both her and Chuck's health declined, they truly appreciated the fact that their three children were nearby, as each of the kids helped them out in their own ways. After Chuck passed away on April 22, 2006, Betty relied upon the love and support of her family even more as her health slowly continued to decline. She faced each obstacle head-on and battled courageously through it.

Betty will be remembered by her family and friends for her dry sense of humor and her welcoming ways towards all who crossed her path. She was very kind hearted in one sense, and cantankerous in another. One of her children stated about her unique personality, "she was like a crusty old marshmallow, hard on the outside and and very soft and gooey on the inside." She will also be remembered for her straightforward attitude and her strength and ability to face adversity head-on. She will be missed by her family in so many different ways.

Betty's memory will live on in the hearts and minds of her three children, Tamara Gladue, Clarion, John (Lisa) Cole, Belmond, and James Cole, Antioch, Calif.; her grandsons, Adam Gladue, St. Helena, Calif., and Tyler Baldwin, Vinton; her sisters, Rosie Gerdes Klemme, and Wilma (Marvin) Lindsay, Swaledale; a brother -in-law, Daniel Cole, Forest Lake, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Chuck Cole; a brother-in-law, George Gerdes; and two nephews, Roger and Robert Lindsay.

Ruth attended the Buffalo Center Consolidated School and graduated with the Class of 1937. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1941 with a degree in Commerce/Business. From 1941 to 1949 she was employed in various administrative/executive capacities with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville, Tenn., and Sheffield, Ala., and with Best Fertilizer Company in El Dorado, Ark., Oakland, Calif., and Lindsay, Calif., where she oversaw construction and opening of a new fertilizer plant. In 1949 she returned to Iowa with intentions of furthering her education at the University of Iowa.

Her life's course changed, however, when she fell in love with a high school classmate, Raymond A. Smith Sr., and on June 1, 1950, they were married. They began farming on his parents' farm southeast of town. In 1952 they moved to a farm in Grant Township where they lived until 1965 when they moved to the farm where Ruth was born, east of Buffalo Center. She continued to live there after Raymond's death on April 30, 1975, and moved from her farm home to her town residence in Buffalo Center in 2003.

From 1965 to 1975 Ruth was employed as a children's welfare worker by the Winnebago County Department of Social Services. She was diligent in her commitment to her church, community and political affairs as evidenced by her long standing membership and terms as president of the St. Patrick's Altar Society, president of the Mason City Deanery of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, the Ladies Literary Circle and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court at Lindsay, California. She also served as president of the Winnebago County Federated Women's Clubs and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the American Association of University Women and the Sierra Club. She was a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Old Capitol Club since her graduation in 1941. She avidly cheered on Hawkeye teams for more than 75 years.

Ruth was also a member of the Winnebago County Domestic Violence Commission and active as a volunteer. She served on the steering committee for the Buffalo Center Centennial in 1992 and was a longtime volunteer reader at the Timely Mission Nursing Home. Ruth also served on the Winnebago County Sesquicentennial Commission and the Buffalo Center Heritage Community Center Committee.

An active Democrat, Ruth was twice the party's candidate for state representative in the 1950s. She was one of the first women in Iowa to serve on a County Farmers Home Administration Advisory Committee. Ruth was quoted in the New York Times for telling Hillary Clinton that she was born the year women attained the suffrage and hoped to live long enough to vote for a woman for president. She was a guest of President Clinton in the Oval Office at the White House and was comfortable in any social situation.

Raymond and Ruth were the parents of six sons, all of whom and their spouses survive her: Frank (lawyer) and Becky of Pleasant Hill, and their children Melany Shaw, Heidi Goodman, Mary Owens, Benjamin Smith, Tyler Smith and Jessman Smith; Raymond Jr. (farmer) and Jody of Buffalo Center, and their children, Zachary Smith, Peter Smith, Amanda Smith, Kelly Smith and Connor Smith; Charles (salesman) and Marcia of Albert Lea, Minn., and their children, Emily Steffenson, Todd Smith, Sarah Skarski and Melissa Uppena; James (grocer) and Mary of Bolingbrook, Ill., and their children, James Smith, Nicholas Smith, Thomas Smith and Douglas Smith; Patrick (businessman and the token family Republican) and Julie of Oklahoma City, OK., and their children, Lauren Smith, Erin Smith, Shannon Smith, Colleen Smith and Abigail Smith; and Dan (lawyer and consultant) and Lorraine of Chevy Chase, Md., and their children, Ruby Smith and Angus Smith.
In addition to being survived by her 13 granddaughters and her 13 grandsons, Ruth is also survived by 29 great-grandchildren, her brother-in-law Stan Johnson of Milwaukee, Wis., and her brother-in-law and sister- in-law Bob and Jean Zielinski of Kerrville, Texas, and her brother-in-law Karl Reichert of Wewahitchka, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, her parents, her sisters Alta Fulstone, Marian Kennedy and Jeanne Johnson and seven of her beloved Smith sisters-in-law and spouses.
Ruth was a lifelong letter writer. She wrote a weekly family letter for more than 25 years, and less frequently in her last years, authoring more than 1,000 letters in total. The one page, single-spaced letter routinely contained family updates, a literary, historical, political or philosophical quote, some local Buffalo Center news, a topical comment on the political events of the day, an uplifting reference to a life event or news article and a subtle bit of advice and wisdom directed toward deserving recipients "between the lines." A front page feature story in The Des Moines Sunday Register in 1998 described her "Letters from Home" as "slyly humorous, refreshingly candid, occasionally acerbic and nearly always upbeat." These letters were a family thread that ran so true and knitted all together.

At the request of the University of Iowa Women Archives Project, the letters have been collected and along with her many other writings are being donated to this project. The family is compiling further information for the archival donation and asks that anyone who has an interest consider contacting Tyler Smith (tyler-murraysmith@gmail.com) for more information.

On the occasion of her 90th birthday, the family letter recipients all wrote letters to her and they were collected in a bound volume and presented to Ruth.

One letter writer summarized Ruth's influence on her family:
"As your letters have so often wisely reminded, whatever roads [are] taken in life, the rules of the road are always the same:
Be true to yourself.
Help others - many hands make light work.
Make friendship a fine art.
Build a shelter against the rain.
Everyone has something of sorrow.
Give thanks for your blessings.
You can catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar.
Don't believe in the word "can't" - persevere relentlessly.
Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.
If you have a lemon, make lemonade.
Kindness is the essence of good manners.
P.S. And for those with whom you have irreconcilable differences, they will just have to put an egg in their shoe and beat it."

Ruth lived her life at a "2 forty hen trot" with an occasional nap when that "deliciously sleepy feeling" overtook her. She was a gracious and elegant lady, an engaging and superb conversationalist, and always concerned first and foremost with the wellbeing of others.

A visitation and celebration of Ruth's amazing life will be held at the Buffalo Center Heritage Town Center where the family will gather with friends and relatives from 6-9 p.m. on June 14. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Buffalo Center, at 10:30 a.m. on June 15, followed by the rite of Christian burial at the family plot in Graceland Cemetery. Her sons will be her pallbearers. Memorials may be made in Ruth's memory to the Heritage Town Center, PO Box 430, Buffalo Center, Iowa, 50424.

Victor L. Parks

ROCKWELL - Victor L. Parks, 91, of Rockwell, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, at the Rockwell Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 Second St. S., Rockwell, with Pastor Rhea Evanson officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 18, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and continue one hour prior to the church service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Victor L. Parks memorial fund or the donor's charity of choice.

Victor LeRoy Parks was born on Aug. 22, 1920, in Belmond, the son of Clayton C. and Othella B. (Holaday) Parks. On Nov. 8, 1942, he married the love of his life, Helen Marie Vierkant, a marriage that lasted nearly 68 years, until her death on Aug. 15, 2010. They had three children: David, Jack and Donna.
Vic grew up on farms near Belmond, Cartersville and Rockwell. He continued to farm near Rockwell until 1973. Vic and Helen continued to live on that farm until entering the nursing home in 2009.

In 1962, Vic was seriously injured in a tractor accident on the Hank Cahill farm near Mason City, which left him partially paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors had told the family that he would probably never walk again, but with assistance and guidance of Bill Otterman at the Easter Seal Village in Clear Lake, he not only walked, but continued to farm for the next 10 years.

Vic also liked sales work, mostly because he liked to meet and talk with people. He was a long-time salesman for Archer Oil Inc. and Eazy-Dry Inc. (David Manufacturing). For many years, he sold crop insurance for IMT, and later joined in partnership with Don Hitzhuzen (Hitzhuzen-Parks Insurance and Real Estate Agency) with offices in Rockwell and Clear Lake. He also worked as a substitute mail carrier.
Vic was a member of the Rockwell Lions Club (past president), associate member of the American Legion Post No. 208, Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and others too numerous to mention.

While a member of the Lions Club, he, along with others, was instrumental in getting the new nursing home built in Rockwell. He served on the board of directors of that nursing home, and as the first president of that board. He served brief periods on other community and country boards from time to time.
Vic always had a quick smile, and if appropriate, a joke to tell. He loved to go fishing and golfing with family and friends. Vic and Helen spent many weekend nights at the Surf, Moose or wherever there was a band to dance to. They loved to travel and managed to visit all 50 states, Canada and South America.

Vic was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Orbra (Buck) Parks; son-in-law, Casper Ludvigson; and father and mother-in-law, Harry and Hazel Vierkant.

Survivors include his children, Dave (Diane) Parks of Clear Lake, Jack Parks of Rockwell and Donna Ludvigson of Edgewood; grandchildren, Victoria (Nick) Murphy, Davy Marie Jakl, Zackery Parks, Adam Tyler, Michelle (Kevin) Ames, Derek and Justin Parks, Lonnie, Lorrie and Jeremy Ludvigson; seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Elmer (Mary) Vierkant; sisters-in-law, Hazel Darg and Wilda Vierkant; many nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors and tenant, Steve Sturges.

Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, 641-423-0924.
