NORTHWOOD - Benhart Royal Berg, 75, of Northwood, died Feb. 19, 2012,
at Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at First
Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Karen Grandall officiating.
Visitation will be held after noon Wednesday at the church.
Benhart Royal Berg, son of Jeffrey and Marie (Bendickson) Berg, was born
June 30, 1936, in Northwood. He was baptized and confirmed at First
Lutheran Church in Northwood. He graduated high school in 1956 from
Northwood. On Aug. 4, 1968, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Aspland
at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. Ben was employed at Freeborn
Foods in Albert Lea, Minn., where he later retired in 2002.
Ben was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. In his free
time he enjoyed fishing, working on cars and feeding the squirrels
peanuts by hand. He was also an employee of Bridley Auto Salvage.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Phyllis, three children, John
Berg (son of a previous marriage) of Northwood, Curtis Berg of
Northwood, Joan Berg (Denny: a special friend) of Mason City; five
grandchildren Tina Berg, Tiffany (Joshua) Mellen, Nathan Berg, Trisha
Hagin, and Robert; one great-grandchild Jessica; two brothers James
(Kathy) Berg of Northwood, Darrell Berg of Northwood; sister-in-law
Marsha Berg of Fertile and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jeffrey,
Jason, Allen; a sister Sharon.

CITY - Barbara Ann Harrer, 59, Mason City, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012,
at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial Mass for Barbara will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb.
23, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with
Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Inurnment will be held at a
later date in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday with a scriptural
wake service at 5:30 p.m. at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126
Third St. N.E., Mason City. Following the visitation, cremation will
take place.
Barbara's family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a

Barbara was born on Aug. 24, 1952, in Mason City, the daughter of F.J.
"Jerry" and JoAnn (Hebel) Harrer. Barbara graduated from Mason City High
School and was a lifelong resident of Mason City.
Barb enjoyed spending time outside, sitting on the front porch,
listening to music and greeting people who came by. In her earlier years
she loved to take walks and visit family, friends and neighbors. Barb
enjoyed her winter trips (19 years) to Florida with her parents. She
always enjoyed meeting new people.
Those left to cherish her memory are her parents, F.J. "Jerry" and JoAnn
(Hebel) Harrer of Mason City; her five siblings, Steve (Julie) Harrer of
Sioux Falls, S.D., Dave Harrer of Melbourne, Fla., Cathy (Mike) Boyle of

- John J. Van Laere, 97, of 19 Fifth St. N.E., Rockford, died Friday,
Feb. 17, 2012, at the Rockwell Nursing Home, Rockwell.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Zion
Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave., Rockford. The Rev. Judy Wooton and
the Rev. Bob Scheurer will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside
Cemetery, Rockford.
Visitation was held 4-6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at the Fullerton Funeral
Home, 302 W. Main, Rockford.
John was born on Aug. 1, 1914, in LaFayette, Ind., to Al and Louise (Newart)
Van Laere. On Nov. 24, 1936, he married Alberta Grius. After his
marriage, the couple moved to Swaledale where John was a self-employed
carpenter. The family later moved to Rockford in 1951 where John
continued his carpentry work. John enjoyed horses and at one time was a
jockey. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. He retired in 1981, yet
continued to make many wood projects for family and friends. Later in
life he met his special friend Dolores Muller, and for the last 20 years
John and Dolores enjoyed traveling together and seeing family and
friends.
John was an outgoing family man who was always thinking of his family
telling others stories and sharing a joke. With his carpentry work he
helped build a number of homes including some in Rockford. He made a
number of baby beds, chairs, rockers and other projects for family
members and friends. Many thought that he was a doctor of wood. He loved
fishing and many would say that he had one hand on the fishing pole and
the other on a minnow. He loved to dance and he continued going out to
dance until the age of 95. He truly loved life to the fullest. His
philosophy of life was to be fair and honest with all, along with seeing
the goodness in other people.
John is survived by his son Jack (Sue) Van Laere; one daughter Joann
Moye; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 13 great-great
grandchildren; along with his very special friend Dolores Muller.
Preceding John in death were his parents, three brothers, wife Alberta,
one grandson, one great granddaughter, one great-great granddaughter and
son in-laws Melvin Mohring and Wendell Moye.

Troy Scott Warner

MOINES - Troy Scott Warner, 41, passed away at Bright Kavanagh Hospice,
Des Moines, on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, from complications of a brain
injury.
He was born Jan. 12, 1971, in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., to Ilene Zieser
and John Warner. He attended school at Mason City High School and
received his GED at the age of 18. He spent most of his years in Des
Moines, where he met his spouse of 12 years, Teann Frantz.
Troy enjoyed keeping busy, working with his hands, and was working on
remodeling their house up until the accident. Many would describe him
"on the go." Also, he had the gift of gab and could talk for hours. On
his down time, you could find him watching Hawkeye football or
basketball, listening to music as loud as he could get it, and had a
life goal of being a DJ, playing pool, avid player of black- jack and
sometimes a magician winner at the slots. But by far, his witty sense of
humor will be missed the most, always telling stories that made you
laugh so hard you cried.
Troy is survived by his spouse: Teann Frantz of Des Moines; parents:
John Warner of Des Moines and Ilene and Bill Zieser of Leland, his
siblings and their spouses: Tina and Randy Owens of Monroe and Christina
Warner and Mike Gard of Ankeny, grandmother: Inez Heimdal of Lake Mills.
nieces: Ashley, Kim and Renee. Nephews: Randy, Devin and Issiah. And
many friends and family that loved him dearly.
Visitation will be held at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Hamilton's
Funeral Home, 605 Lyons St., Des Moines, followed by service at 2:30
p.m.
In leiu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Troy's

Jean Marie Fry

CITY - Jean Marie Fry, 84, of 425 20th Street S.W., Mason City died
Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services for Jean will be held at 10:30 a.m, Thursday, Feb. 23,
at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City
with the Reverend Sid Bohls officiating. Burial will be held at
Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., today, Wednesday, Feb. 22, at
Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the Jean Fry Memorial Fund
in care of the family.
Jean Marie Fry was one of 12 children born to George and Myrtle
Auchampach Brownlee in Popejoy, on Dec. 23, 1927. Jean attended grade
school in Popejoy and later in Iowa Falls. Jean was a waitress in Iowa
Falls and was united in marriage to her first husband, J. Fred Mills on
May 10, 1945, and to this union, two children were born: Twila and
Tanya. Years later, the marriage ended and she married Darwin Fry in
1964, bringing his son, Kip Fry into the family. Jean was a homemaker
all of her life taking care of her three precious children. Jean and
Darwin enjoyed traveling all around the United States and Europe. Darwin
passed away in May of 1987.
Jean was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City.
Jean was an immaculate housekeeper and a fabulous cook and the family
had many gatherings at her home. Jean enjoyed playing cards and mushroom
hunting. Her passion was being in the outdoors, walking, gardening, and
attending to her flowers. She also enjoyed reading and had exceptional
crocheting skills. Most importantly, her family came first and she
enjoyed spending her time with her children, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Twila (Norm)
Luker, Mason City, Tanya (LaVern) Dahl, Mason City, and Kip Fry,
Grapevine, Texas; grandchildren, Deanna (Duane) Loeschen, Mason City, N.

Betty June Glass

- Betty June Glass, well known as Betty Thomas, 83, passed away
Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at her home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's
Catholic Church with the Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will be
in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call today from 2-8 p.m. at the
Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 390 N.
Grandview Avenue, where a wake service will be held at 7:30p.m.
Betty was born on Oct. 13, 1928, in Dubuque, the daughter of Alvin and
Pauline (Schilling) Conzett. She graduated from the Visitation Academy
in 1946.
After high school she began working at a local telephone company in
Dubuque.
On June 14, 1952, she married William Nankival at Nativity Church.
Betty started her broadcasting career with her husband Bill during the
mid-1950s at KDTH and WDBQ. She was Dubuque's favorite call-in host for
"The Cracker Barrel" and "Cooks Corner". At the time, Betty was one of
few women in Iowa to have their own radio program.
After her husband's death in 1966, Betty continued to broadcast in
Dubuque and ultimately retired in 1998.
On Jan. 16, 1971, she married Theodore Glass at St. Anthony's Church. He
preceded her in death on July 23, 1994.
In 2002, Betty was inducted in to the Iowa Broadcasters Association Hall
of Fame, after 32 years of sharing her household hints and advice.
Betty also wrote and published several cookbooks and household hints
books, selling more than one hundred thousand copies.
Betty also loved spending time with her family, camping, cheering her
grandkids on at sporting events, reading, the Hawkeyes, Cubs, and Bears.
She had a zest for life and was always willing to give any adventure a
try.
Surviving are her children, Judith (Wayne) Fick, of Mason City, Thomas
(Gina) Nankival, of Onalaska, Wis., Mary Beth (Brian) Gerhards, of
Potosi, Wis.; five grandchildren, Julie (Charlie) West, Jeff (Sadie)
Fick, Ryan Gerhards, Will and Isabelle Nankival; seven
great-grandchildren, Andrew, Lucas, Jacie West, Delia and Brenna Fick,
and Brayden and Maddie Gerhards; her brother, William (Connie) Conzett;
her sister, Lois O' Brien, both of Dubuque; her brother- in-law, Roger
Huber, of Dubuque; Sisters-in-law, Beth Glass, of Cedar Rapids, and
Thelma (Bob) Jackson, of West Des Moines; her special niece, Chris (Tom)
Nugent, and their children, Alyx, Brien and Brendan Nugent, of Dubuque,
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister in infancy, and a
brother-in-law, Bob O' Brien.
Memorials may be given to Tri-State Independent Blind Society in Betty's
honor.

POINT - Arnold K. Hanson, 95, died Feb. 20, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital
in Cedar Rapids.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m., Sunday, March 4, Rock Creek
Lutheran Church, rural Osage, by Pastor Torens.

Survivors include three children, Donald (Jo) Hanson of Center Point,
Linda (Willard) Maas of Parkston, S.D., and Richard (Pat) Hanson of Des
Moines; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Olaf
(Dorothy) Hanson of San Jose, Calif.; and many extended family and
friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Betty; brother, Glen (Alvira)
Hanson; and sister, Myrtle (Carl) Christiansen.
Arnold Kenneth Hanson was born Jan. 5, 1917, in Mitchell County, the son
of Andrew and Kristine (Framstad) Hanson. He graduated from Plymouth
High School. Arnold was proud of his service in the Army Air Corps.
During that time, he was sent to Detroit, Mich., where the Air Corps
trained him to repair Mercedes-Benz airplane engines.
While there, he met Betty Ann McPherson, and they were married on July
13, 1947.
The couple farmed near Osage. Following retirement from farming, the
couple moved to Nora Springs. Arnold spent his remaining years near
Cedar Rapids.
Arnold could always find time to bowl and pitch horseshoes. He shared
these contests with Betty and challenged many family members and friends
in tournaments. His trophies grace the homes of his children and
grandchildren.
Arnold holds the 1989 National Championship title in his class.
Arn, Arny, or Grandpa Arnold, he answered to all of these names. He had
a special place in his heart for all the little children. Arnold always
had a book at his side and read many a Western. Thanks to his friends at
the Nora Springs Public Library.
Rock Creek Lutheran Church in rural Osage played an important role in
Arnold's life. The family request memorials to be directed towards its
ministry. Arnold would want to say "Mon Tusen Takk!" (Many thousand

Wayne was born Jan. 22, 1931, on the family farm southwest of Mapleton,
the son of Raymond and Seffa (Baker) Hasbrouck. He attended country
school through the eighth grade, and then attended and graduated from
Mapleton High School in 1949.
Wayne married Evelyn Moraine Melby on June 26, 1954, in Onawa. They
moved to Clear Lake in 1968.
Wayne entered the United States
Army
and served during the
Korean War.
He was discharged in 1957 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He
worked for Tractor Supply for over 35 years, retiring as manager of TSC
in Mason City in 1993.
Wayne enjoyed gardening, doing farm and yard work for Nieman Farms,
boating, golfing, his fishing trips to Canada and was an avid Hawkeye
fan.
Wayne is survived by his two children Vicki (Gene "Skeeter") Welch,
Clear Lake, and Bruce (Joy McGrane) Hasbrouck, Clear Lake; his very long
time special friend Virginia Grimm, Clear Lake; four grandchildren
Vanessa (Jason Schultz) Hasbrouck, Sioux City, Natalie Hasbrouck,
Ventura, Ryan (Heather) Welch, Northwood, and Nathaniel (April) Welch,
Grimes; five great-grandchildren Aubrey Schultz, Ethan , Sydney, Finley

Jensen, was born Jan. 1, 1923, at Lake Mills. She graduated from Lake

On Feb. 12, 1943, she was married to Herbert Irving at Bethany, Mo. They
lived in Garner where they raised their three daughters. Gelaine enjoyed
going to auctions and collecting antiques.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner, UMW and the
Garner American Legion Auxiliary.
Gelaine is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Gary) Maben of Garner,
Carol (Paul) Anderson of Appleton, Wis., and Helen (Thomas) Sammons of
Tyler, Texas; two grandchildren, Heather and Kendra Hallett of Tyler,
Texas; four great-grandchildren, Dakotah Maben, Jeremy Maben, Jenna
Maben and Taylor Sammons; a great-great-granddaughter, Riley Maben; a
sister, Phyllis Quintus of Hampton; a niece; and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, March 14, 2006; her

LAKE - Richard "Richie" LeRoy Johnson, 76, of Clear Lake, died Sunday,
Feb. 19, 2012, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kathy Graves of Trinity
Lutheran Church, Mason City, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa with military honors provided by the
Clear Lake
V.F.W.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Friday until time of service. Family
suggests memorials to Richard LeRoy Johnson Memorial Fund.
Richard was born Oct. 8, 1935, in Clear Lake, the one of ten siblings
son of Adolph Martin and Mary E. (Skellinger) Johnson. He graduated from
Clear Lake High School in 1953. Following high school, he enlisted in
the United States
Army
and served during the
Korean War.
He moved back to Clear Lake and later worked for his brother Ralph, who
was a painting contractor.
He enjoyed watching basketball and football, especially his favorite
teams, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings. He also enjoyed visiting
with his friends and family.
Richard is survived by his brothers Ralph "Red" Johnson, Mason City, and
Keith (Gigi) Johnson, Des Moines; and sisters Martha Lange, White Bear
Lake, Minn.; Lorrine Michaels, Hazelwood, Mo., Dorothy (Jerry)
Chamberlain, White Bear Lake, Minn., and a special sister Phyllis "Till"
Spilman, Clear Lake; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and a special
friend at Oakwood Audrey Winkel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Adeline Schendel and
three brothers Calvin K., Kenneth R. and Lincoln P. Johnson.

- Ives "Dolly" Virginia Lantz, 86, of Plymouth died Tuesday, Feb. 21,
2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
A funeral service for Dolly will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24,
at the Plymouth United Methodist Church, 508 Carter Street, Plymouth,
with the Reverend Wendy Johannesen officiating. Burial will take place

Ives "Dolly" Virginia Lantz was born on Oct. 19, 1925, to Louis and
Grace Cook Lantz in Plymouth. Dolly attended Plymouth schools and
graduated from Plymouth High School in 1944. After she graduated from
school, she helped her parents at the home. Dolly was a hard worker,
working as a dietary aid at Mercy Medical Center for over 20 years. She
continued her working career at the Taylor Auction College for eight
years. She also was one to drive the elderly around, taking them to
doctors' appointments and to the grocery store.
Dolly enjoyed collecting cups, eating out and watching baseball and
basketball games.
She was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church and Mercy
Hospital Girls Get Together.
Dolly will be missed by her close neighbors, friends and extended
relatives.

Karen Kay Meyer was born Oct. 14, 1942, in Swaledale, a daughter of Emil
and Sigrid (Jorgesen) Roggemann. She attended schools in Sheffield.
On Jan. 28, 1961, Karen was united in marriage with Merlin Meyer at
Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton. To this union two children were
born. As her children entered high school Karen returned to school
becoming a Certified Nurse's Aide and began working at Mercy Medical
Center. She retired in 2004 after nearly 25 years at the hospital.
For many years Karen and Merlin wintered in Florida and traveled many
areas of the country. They spent most of the last year and a half at
their second home in Avion Palms, Bowling Green, Fla.
Karen enjoyed her time at Avion Palms in Bowling Green, Fla., camping
and traveling with her husband. She enjoyed spending time with her
family and visiting with friends both in Sheffield and in Avion Palms.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 51 years, Merlin; son,
Randy (Deb) Meyer, Sheffield; daughter, Julie (Mark) Dannen, Sheffield;
grandchildren, Eric (Brittnee) Meyer and their children, Owen and
Anthany; Ashley Meyer and her daughter Sydney; Joshua (Amanda) Dannen;
sisters, Patricia Cunningham, Clear Lake; Marilyn (Ron) Engebretson,
Sheffield; sister-in-law, Sharon Roggemann, Waverly; and mother-in-law,

University and graduated in 1974. Mr. Raymond was a member of St. Thomas
More Catholic Church and employed by Timken Co. (formerly Torrington)
with more than 30 years service as a mechanical industrial engineer and
salesman, where it enabled him to travel abroad.

WICHITA, Kan. - Clifford D. Rice, 86, died Nov. 7, 2010, at Robert J.
Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita.
He was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Clear Lake, the son of Clifford Dewey and
Weenonah Garlock Rice. His biological father died when he was still very
young and he was raised by his stepfather, Earl C. Westcott.
He graduated from Mason City High School in 1942 and received a BA in
business from the
University of
Minnesota. He
retired as retail sales manager for Target Co., also having managed the
original Target store in Roseville, Minn. He was a member of First
Presbyterian Church. He was a
U.S. Air Force
veteran of
World War II.
Survivors include: sons, Steve Rice and wife Susan, Glenwood Springs,
Colo., and Justin Rice, Wichita, Kan.; daughters, Anne Gastineau and
husband Dennis, Byron, Minn., Kay Francis and husband Bob, Sodus, Mich.,
and Julie Rice, Hutchinson; and nine grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, his mother and stepfather,
Earl C. Westcott; grandson, Brett Francis; and sister, Idelle Tenney.

Arlene Eleanor was born June 6, 1919, the daughter of Edward A. and Emma
Koehler in Ulster Township, Floyd County. She was one of six children.
She graduated with the class of 1936 from Rockford High School and then
received her teaching certificate from the State Teachers College in
Cedar Falls.
For the next eight years she taught at several rural schools in the
North Iowa area. On June 17, 1945, she was united in marriage to George
Trettin at Zion Lutheran Church. They made their home and raised their
family over the next 66 years, living at their current home for many
years.
Arlene remained active in her church, being a Sunday School teacher, a
member of WELCA church circles, and being an adviser for 20 years with
the Young Mothers Group.
Her favorite things to do were to provide for and nurture others. She
spent many hours cooking and canning produce from her large vegetable
garden. When it came time to freeze and preserve, it was usually a
family affair with all the children helping.
One of Arlene's loves was cooking and recipe hunting. Often her evening
hours were spent browsing through magazines looking for new dishes to
try out on her family.
Later in life, her large family meal spreads were the makings of legend.
As her family matured, Arlene's gardening interest shifted to flowers,
lots and lots of flowers. She was also an avid painter of ceramics and
wall paintings with her rose portraits being real enough to smell. She
loved little children and often would stop and talk to them.
Arlene is survived by her husband, George, Rockford; three of their
surviving children, Constance "Connie" and her husband Roger Baylor,
Sherrill; Carol Boring, Orcas Island, Wash.; Karen Trettin, Charles
City, (daughter-in-law), Timothy and his wife Denyce Trettin, Rockford;
nine grandchildren, Jill (Paul) Skyles and Susan (Nathan) Hedlund, Josh,
Jeremy, Zachary and Katrina Boring, Kelly and Cole Trettin and Ashley
Trettin; six great-grandchildren; and her brother Donald and wife Liz
Koehler, Rockford, and sister-in-law Myra Koehler, Charles City.
Her parents, son Michael Trettin, son-in-law Mel Boring, sisters Wilma
Damgaard and Mildred Kruse, and brothers Lloyd and Dale Koehler preceded
Arlene in death.

After returning from the service, he attended Hamilton Business School.
He then worked for Western Union as a relief office manager in the
Midwest and as an office manager in the Omaha office. After his
retirement, Vernon moved back to Osage. He was a member of the American
Legion and the
V.F.W.
Vernon was an avid collector of antiques.
Vernon is survived by nieces and nephews, Edna (Marvin) Norby of
Osage,Gary (Lavonne) Cockrum of Osage, Patricia (Ron) Thompson of
Waterloo, Jim (Lodema) Cockrum of Osage, Mary (Keith) Lugg of Casper,

Street Gospel Place. Bill was also a member of the
VFW.
In his younger years, Bill enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing,
camping and horseback riding. He also enjoyed spending time with his
family and AA.
Bill was a "Jack of All Trades and Master of None" who enjoyed
tinkering/fixing things. Bill was an active person who found great joy
in helping others - often bringing people to AA meetings and church
services.

Cindy was born on July 26, 1956, the younger of the two daughters of
Kenneth and Lorraine Michel. She was born in Rockford, Ill., and was a
graduate of Belvidere High School.
On June 26, 1982, Cindy married Brian Dallman at the Congregational
Church in Britt. Shortly after their marriage, Brian and Cindy went to
live in India for six months on a short-term mission trip.
Cindy had a teaching degree from Illinois State University in Special
Education and had done her student teaching in England. She taught at
Gerard School in Mason City, the Cerro Gordo school for juvenile
delinquents and at Forest City Christian School. A true teacher, she
could find a teaching opportunity in many of her life experiences.
She had a heart for the very young and for senior citizens. She worked
for the Congregate Meals and Meals on Wheels programs and taught the
3-year-old Sunday school class at the Britt E-Free Church which she
attended. Also at the church, she was involved with Awana and Women of
the Word (WOW) as well as being a deaconess and heading the prayer
chain.
Her personal hobbies included a passion for flower gardening and for
music; she was a singer and played the guitar.
She is survived by her husband, Brian; her children, Mathew and Anna;
her sister, Christine; and her mother-in-law, Evelyn Dallman.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rachel; her parents,
Kenneth and Lorraine; and her father-in-law, Lyle Dallman.

Linda P. Miller was born Feb. 7, 1947, in Mason City, the daughter of
Kenneth Miller and Florence (Nardicchio) Dewey. She attended and
graduated from Mason City High School in 1965. She was married to Thomas
Faught at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City on June 19, 1965;
they later divorced.
Through the years she worked at UNYSIS, Armour's, Minnesota Rubber and
Alexander Batteries until working at Principal Financial as a Processing
Technician for the last twelve years. She enjoyed reading, especially by
author Danielle Steele, listening to music and her many trips with her
family. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Linda was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church,
V.F.W.
and the Moose Lodge. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved
her.
She is survived by her sons, Tad and wife Lori Faught, Joseph Dominic
Faught, Christopher Faught and friend Megan Fox; daughter, Amy Hollinger
and husband Mike, all of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Justin and
Rebecca Faught, Alex Faught, Nick, Mikaela and Joey Faught, Alexandra
and Sydney Hollinger; brother, William (Faith) Dewey of Clear Lake;

HANLONTOWN-LaVerne
D. "Mernie" Kaasa, 90, of Hanlontown, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at
the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A funeral service for Mernie will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25,
at Grace Lutheran Church, 302 E. 4th St., Hanlontown, with Pastor Linda
Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial will follow in Brush Point
Cemetery, rural Hanlontown, where military honors will be provided by
members of the American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly.
Visitation will be held Friday evening (Feb. 24) at Bride Colonial
Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly.
LaVerne Duane Kaasa was born on May 24, 1921, in Hanlontown, the son of
Carl and Thea (Tangen) Kaasa. He attended and graduated from Hanlontown
High School amongst the class of 1939. Following high school LaVerne
attended Waldorf College in Forest City and AIB in Des Moines before
enlisting in the
Army
Air Corps in January of 1942.
While in the military LaVerne served with the 8th Air Force - 188th Bomb
Group and was stationed in England. On August 3rd, 1944 he was shot down
while on a mission over Paris; he was held as a prisoner of war in
Russia and Germany until April 28, 1945, when they were liberated.
LaVerne was honorably discharged in September of 1945.
On August 5, 1942 LaVerne was united in marriage to Darlene Levitt at
the United Methodist Church in Sheffield. They operated a grocery store
in Belmond until the summer of 1947 when they returned to Hanlontown and
took over his father's store. In 1963 they sold the store and LaVerne
became the Standard Oil agent and then in later years the Amoco man
until his retirement in 1983.
Mernie was a lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church, an original
member of the Hanlontown Fire Department where he served for over 30
years, a member of the town council for over 20 years, a Boy Scout Troop
leader, Charter Lions Club member and a member of the American Legion.
He enjoyed traveling, golfing and wintering in Arizona, and enjoyed
summer fishing trips to Minnesota.
Those grateful in sharing in Mernie's life are his children, Stephen
(Annette) Kaasa, Albert Lea, Minn., Rebecca Langan, Bayport, Minn., and
Annette (Kirk) Flores, Glen Ellyn, Ill.; his grandchildren, Kelly, Kari,
James Patrick, Colin and Michael Langan, and Erin, Kate, and Benjamin
Flores; as well as several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Mernie is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene; his
sisters, Doris and Kathryn; his brother, Carlyle; and a nephew, David
Field.

Joyce Joan Kirkbride
HAMPTON
- Joyce Joan Kirkbride, 66, of Hampton, passed away on Feb. 21, 2012, at
the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.
She was born on Oct. 30, 1945, in Hampton, the daughter of Carl and Fern
(Banner) Kirkbride. At age 4, Joyce was diagnosed with Polio. She would
jokingly call herself an "elementary school dropout" because she could
not attend school with the other students past the fifth grade due to
her Polio.
Joyce received her education via telephone between the school and her
home and graduated from Hampton High School in 1963. She then attended
the University of Missouri and studied accounting.
Joyce was very dedicated to the time she spent with her family and
friends. She enjoyed taking care of people. She also enjoyed
needlepoint, crocheting, other crafts and cooking for her visitors.
Joyce was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in
Hampton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents;
three uncles, Alvie, Alfred Ray and Ira Frances Kirkbride; and her best
friend, Sheila Witte.
Joyce is survived by two brothers, Lee (Etsuko) Kirkbride of Arizona and
George (Fay) Kirkbride of Mo.; five nephews, four nieces, 23
great-nieces and nephews, one great-great-nephew, several cousins, a
special friend, Dallas (Joanne) Lee, and two adopted families, the
family of Lynn and Sheila Witte and the family of Ed and Gerrie Foster.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at
Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with the Rev. John Byrne
officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 25, at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will be in

Ann Stang, age 78, of Osage, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Mitchell
County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Sarah donated her body to the Mayo Clinic with the hope that her gift
would assist education and research.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the
First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Sam Mack officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Sarah was born June 16, 1933, in Spencer, the daughter of Benjamin and
Ruth (Langland) Hudtloff. She graduated from Kamrar High School in 1951,
from the University of Iowa in 1956 and from Mankato State University in
1980.
Sarah married Dale Stang on June 7, 1958, at Trinity Lutheran Church in
Osage. Sarah was a music teacher at Osage, Little Cedar, Mitchell and
Sacred Heart and taught students with learning disabilities in Belmond
schools. She also was a corn detasseling supervisor.
Sarah was a member of the Methodist Church, where she was a choir member
and director, and a member of the United Methodist Women and the Naomi
Circle. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Alpha Writers, and was a
member and director of the Sweet Adelines Music City Chorus.
Sarah was a home school supervisor and exchange student coordinator. She
enjoyed golfing with friends and family, riding with Dale on the
motorcycle, puzzles of all kinds, knitting, visiting nursing homes with
their dog, Pepper, gardening, and taking care of her grandchildren.
Sarah is survived by her husband, Dale Stang of Osage; her children,
Mark (Marcia) Stang of Dover, Ark., Eric (Ellie) Stang of Blue Bell,
Pa., Alan Stang of Phoenix, Ariz., Jeanne (Gary) Swenson of Kelley; five
grandchildren, Joshua Prince, Kaleb Prince, Ben Stang, Brendan Stang and
Timmy Stang; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Strackbein
of Gibbon, Minn., and Louise Young of North Liberty.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

- Henrietta Eekhoff, 88, of Kanawha passed away Friday, February 24,
2012, at the Kanawha Community Home.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at 10:30
a.m. at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha with Pastor
Steve Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery
near Kanawha.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 5 until 7
p.m. at the Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East Second Street in Kanawha and
continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Henrietta, the daughter of Kort and Alice Delger, was born April 22,
1923, on a farm southeast of Kanawha. She attended rural schools through
eighth grade, attended Kanawha High School, and finished high school her
junior and senior years in Corwith, graduating in 1940.
After graduation, she worked in Des Moines at Solar Aircraft as an
acetylene welder during World War II.
She was married December 29, 1943, to Pete Eekhoff, son of the Rev.
Peter and Marie Eekhoff, at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. They
farmed a year at Corwith. In 1945 they moved to a farm 2½ miles west of
Kanawha, which they later purchased. They were blessed with four
children: Judy, Janice, Perry and Kelvin.
In 1985, they moved to Kanawha and enjoyed many years together.
Henrietta loved their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She loved to have them come home and enjoyed the happy times together
around the dining room table while having a meal together.
Henrietta loved the Lord and was known as the "praying" Grandma. She was
very active in her church. She taught Sunday school, catechism and she
and her husband were Young People leaders for several years. She loved
teenagers and was the girls' basketball chaperone for several years. She
was an active Ladies Aid member, serving as vice president and secretary
for several years. She also visited Kanawha nursing home every week and
shared her faith with them.
In 1999, her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Henrietta
cared for him until he entered the Kanawha Community Home in 2005. She
enjoyed breakfast with him every morning after 63 years of marriage in
their home.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and
was concerned for their spiritual welfare.
After the passing of her husband she relied completely on the Lord, read
scripture every day and had the assurance that He would be with her
every day.
Henrietta leaves behind her beloved children and their spouses: Judy and
her husband Bruce Pollock, Janice and her husband Ken Eliason, Perry and
his wife Ellie, Kel and his wife Barb. She also leaves nine
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Pete in 2007, her parents Kort
and Alice Delger, Rev. Peter and Marie Eekhoff and brother Kort Delger,
Jr.

- Wilma Muriel Friesleben, 83, died suddenly Thursday, February 23,
2012, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services are being held on Tuesday February 28, 2012, at 1:30
p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Troy Pflibsen
officiating. Interment will be at the Belmond Cemetery. A visitation
will be held at Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, Monday, February 27,
2012, from 4 to 7 p.m., and will continue the next day an hour prior to
service.
Wilma M. Friesleben was born west of Belmond on a farm to Carlton and
Adina (Hefte) Johnson on March 6, 1928. Wilma was baptized and confirmed
at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Belmond. She attended country school
and graduated from Belmond High School in 1945. She then worked for
Schultz Drug Store and in the offices at the Thompson Hybrid Corn Co.
Wilma was united in marriage to Donald Friesleben on January 8, 1949, at
the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Belmond. Wilma worked at the Central
Telephone Company for many years and at the bank for 16 years before she
retired in March 1993. She continued to work for the Tenold Funeral Home
and The Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond for many years.
Wilma lived on a farm east of Belmond for 45 years until they purchased
a home and moved into Belmond in 1994.
She was a very active member in her church, the Trinity Lutheran Church
and the Mary Magdalene Circle. Wilma loved to be involved in numerous
organizations and gave countless hours of service to help others. She
was very meticulous and conscientious in all of her duties. She was also
very involved in her community being a member of the P.E.O. Chapter LV,
the Progress Club, Belmond Hospital Auxiliary where she served as
memorial chairman, and was a member of the Belmond Country Club where
she loved to golf.
She truly loved to be interacting with people. Wilma was always known to
be ready to play a game of cards, or to start working on that next card
at bingo with her friends. She enjoyed going out and interacting with
the public. Wilma thoroughly enjoyed working funeral visitations and
greeting all who crossed her path. She loved to see the world and it
carried on with her passion of traveling many destinations. Her love and
compassion covered far and wide among her vast amount of friends.
Her love and memories will continue to live on in the hearts and lives
of her brothers Dudley (Janice) Johnson of Kanawha; Arland (Avis)
Johnson of Hector, Minn. and Gary (Barbara) Johnson of St. John's,
Newfoundland.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents Carlton and Adina; husband
Don; sisters: Laura (Telford) Simon; Edith (Stanley) Shanhan; Carol
(Earl) Christianson; Gaylen (Delores) Johnson; Aileen (Clifford) Johnson

James Edward Osier
GREENE
- James Edward Osier, 70, passed away at his home in Greene, Iowa, on
Feb. 18, 2012, after a long battle with throat cancer.
He was born on Feb. 24, 1941, in Floyd County, the sixth of thirteen
children of Donald "Dutch" and Geraldine Betts Osier. Jim attended
country schools and Sacred Heart Academy in Greene. His occupations
included road construction with Allied Construction of Charles City, and
he joined the Plastering Union in California in 1968.
The family moved to Colorado in 1972, where Jim continued to do
plastering work. In 198,6 they moved back to the Los Angeles area where
he worked until a back injury in 1996. They moved to Greene in 2001.
Jim married Diane Lucille Barth on June 19, 1959, in Forest City, Iowa.
To this union were born three children: Julie, Randy and Jody. In
September 1998 they adopted two granddaughters, Tarah and Larissa Osier.
Jim attended St. Peter Lutheran Church.
He loved working in his garden, riding his John Deere lawn mower,
working in his shop, and eating vanilla ice cream and anything sweet. He
enjoyed spending time with his family and babysitting his loving dog he
called "Grandson Petey."
Jim is survived by his wife, Diane, of 52 years; three children: Julie
(Osier) Tucker of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif; Randy (Cheryl) Osier of
Greene; and Jody (Leah) Osier of Glendora, Calif; two adopted
grandchildren Tarah and Larissa Osier, both of Cedar Falls;
grandchildren: Randy Osier, Jr. of Brighton, Colo; Amanda (Joey) Nguyen
of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif; Brittany Rice, Arianna and Chad Osier of
Glendora, Calif; his mother Geri (Betts) Osier of Greene; brothers:

LAKE - Jesse Lee Yun Richardson, 17, of 11418 Jonquil Ave., Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Thursday Feb. 23, 2012, at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Clear Lake
United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Diana Hoover
officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, Iowa.
Visitation will be Monday from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa, and then one hour before the service
on Tuesday at the church. Family suggests memorials go to the Jesse Lee
Yun Richardson Memorial Fund. Jesse's final act was to give the gift of
life through organ donation.
Jesse was born Sept. 12, 1994, in Boochun City, South Korea. At the age
of seventeen months he was adopted by David and Linda (Peckham)
Richardson. He was a junior at Clear Lake High School. Jesse loved and
excelled in sports. In school he participated in wrestling, track,
soccer, and football. He really enjoyed weight lifting, cooking, and
playing video games on his Xbox. His favorite thing was UFC and MMA
fighting. He spent a lot of time watching it on TV and practicing his
moves. Jesse also liked tormenting his grandmother's cat, listening to
music on his iPod, watching Sci-Fi, drawing, and being the class clown.
Jesse also loved to go out with his friends.
Jesse is survived by his parents David and Linda Richardson, sister
Olivia Richardson, maternal grandparents Don and Rose Peckham, Clear
Lake, Iowa; paternal grandmother Connie Richardson, Poplar Bluff,
Missouri; uncles and aunts Ron and Tyies Andersen, Ray and Vickie

Marjorie Ann (Hartman) Sime passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 23,
2012, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood surrounded by her
family.
A funeral service for Marjorie will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27,
at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with
Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset
Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Conner
Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood.
Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Monday at
the church.

Marjorie Ann (Hartman) Sime, was born on July 13, 1931, in Allison,
Iowa, the daughter of Rhiner and Edith (Hildebrand) Hartman. She
received her education in the Allison and Crystal Lake community
schools, graduating from Crystal Lake High School. Marge also graduated
from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Mankato State University
where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education. Marge began her
career in education in St. Ansgar. She subsequently taught in Northwood
before leaving to raise her family. She resumed teaching in Lake Mills
and retired in 1993 after 27 years.
She was united in marriage to Dale Sime on August 14, 1955, at United
Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. They farmed and raised their family
west of Northwood. They celebrated their 50th anniversary with a large
gathering of family and friends at Randy Sime's in 2005.
The joy of Marge's life was spending time with her family and friends.
She enjoyed cooking and having her family over for Sunday dinner. She
especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and taking
pictures and videos. The family is blessed with videos from the
mid-1960s to 2004 because of her efforts. She enjoyed sewing and
especially making quilts. She and Dale had memorable trips to Europe and
in the US. She was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in
Northwood, and was a member of the Julia Circle and the Kitchen
Committee at the church.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Dale Sime of Northwood; her
children, Glenda (David) Stahl of Mound, Minn., and Randy (Sandy) Sime
of Northwood; her grandchildren, Katie Baker (Kyle) of The Colony,
Texas, Angie Sime of Sioux Rapids, Bryan Sime of Northwood, and Shelby
Stahl of Mound, Minn; her sister, Jean (Virgil) Helm of Crystal Lake;
sisters-in-law, Agnes Hartman of Crystal Lake, and Janiece Gordon of
Albert Lea, Minn; a brother-in-law, Donald (Elaine) Sime of Roseville,
Minn; as well as many extended family members and friends.
Her parents, a brother, Ronald Hartman, sister-in-law Dorothy Meyer, and
brothers-in-law, Warren Gordon and Merrill Meyer, preceded her in death.

former Fourth Ward City Councilman, died Thursday, February 23, 2012,
from a sudden heart attack with his wife, Teri at his side.

St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First Street N.E., with the Rev. Wendy

Scott Edwin Witter was born March 3, 1955, in Sterling, Colorado. He was
the son of the late Phyllis Ann (Smith) Witter and Harold Wayne Witter.
He and his sister, Vikki (Witter) Walters were raised most of their
lives by their grandmother, Elsie Amelia (Hawkins) Halley.
Scott was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and was a member of
the Iowa National Guard for many years. He graduated on May 23, 1979,
with an Associate of Arts Degree and a Certificate of Law Enforcement
from North Iowa Area Community College. He was an active member of the
Mason City Jaycees for many years, past member of the Mayor's 2000
Committee, Band Festival Committee, Board of Trustees of St. James
Lutheran Church, and past president and member of the board of directors
of the Oikoumene Religious Center (OK House) on the NIACC campus. He was
employed for many years at Curries Manufacturing, IMI Cornelius, Inc.
(formerly Schneider Metal Manufacturing Co.), Schwann's, Rex TV &
Appliance, and V&M Farms.
Scott enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, music, and was an
avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
His greatest commitment was to the city of Mason City when he was
elected to serve eight years as City Councilman, representing the Fourth
Ward. Scott believed that Mason City must have an aggressive and
positive city government to continue Mason City's growth and
development. His goal was to achieve the best possible opportunities for
the city.
He served as chairman of the Mason City Flood and Water Committee,
member of the Mason City Finance and Personnel Committees, Board of
Directors of North Iowa Area Council of Government, and board of
directors of the Top of Iowa Economic Development Regional Coordinating
Council.
The highlight of his eight-year term was serving as a member of the
Mason City delegation for Trade Mission and traveling to Wenzhou, China.
Mr. Witter married Christa A. Kleinschmidt at Greene, Iowa, on September
14, 1975. To this union, two sons were born, Christopher Scott Witter
and Justin Paul Witter. On February 28, 1997, he was united in marriage
to Teri (Rogers) Mitchell. With this union, Scott adopted Teri's
daughter, Emily with an open heart as his own. Teri and Scott would have
celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on February 28.
Scott is survived by his wife, Teri Witter of Mason City; two sons and
their families, Chris Witter (Brandy Reed) and Justin Witter (Charlotte
Pledge), both of Cedar Rapids, a daughter, Emily (Tyler) Fites,
Shakopee, Minnesota; sister and husband, Vikki (Daryl) Walters of
Holland, Iowa; two step-sons, Stephen Mitchell of Aurora, Colorado, and
Jonathan Mitchell of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Alexandra Marie,
Faith Witter, Xavier Witter, Sophia Fites, Krista, Marquise, Brennon,
Mercedes, Michael, and Keegan; niece and nephews, Amy (Chad) Vohs and
their son, Jaxen, Ben (Kadi) Mills, and Alex Mills, and many relatives
and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elsie and Howard Halley;
mother, Phyllis Ann Witter; father, Harold Wayne Witter; grandparents,
Mabel and Edwin Witter; niece, Angel Mills.
