When he was in sixth grade his family moved to Nora Springs, Iowa, where he would meet the love of his life Karen (Teeple). John was a star athlete at Nora Springs High School, and would play quarterback for the football team and second base for the baseball team. John and Karen attended the University of Iowa where John majored in accounting while Karen earned a degree in nursing. John always remained a devoted Hawkeye fan. In 1962, they moved to Arizona with their 5-week-old son, Kevin. John worked as an accountant in his Uncle Gene's insurance company, ITAC, before moving on to become a Certified Financial Examiner for the State Departments of Insurance in Arizona, Idaho and Oklahoma. His job required him to be away from home during the week, but he was able to come home on the weekends for quality family time. In 1965, their youngest son was born, Jeff, and the family was complete. John lived for today, often surprising his family with vacations together. Those trips provided his family with many joyful memories of his generosity and love. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, especially his sons. John left behind a legacy on how to live life with passion, dignity, a sense of humor and how to persevere in the face of true adversity related to his health issues.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen; his two sons, Kevin (Ursula) and Jeff (Kristin); his five grandchildren, Jessica and Jordan (Kevin) and Kaitlin, John II and Meagan (Jeff); his brother, Tom (Nancy) Reuter; and his extended family and many friends who were blessed by his friendship, love and generous heart.
