J. James "Jim" Eden
U.S. Navy Vietnam war

MASON CITY - J. James (Jim) Eden, 71, of 198 S. Grover Ave., 506, Mason City, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 10, 2012, at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Hospice Chaplain Ed Bard officiating.

Per Jim's request, his body has been cremated. A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the J. James (Jim) Eden fund in care of the family.

Jim was born Dec. 15, 1940, in Mason City, the son of Henry and Junella (Burgess) Eden. Jim went to school in Mason City at Monroe Jr. High and Mason City High School in the Class of 1959. Jim (J.J.) enlisted in the Navy and served as an ABE-3 working the catapult on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31), serving two tours in Japan during the Vietnam Conflict.

Jim married Judith Greiman on March 31, 1962. They had four sons: James Scott, Jon Christopher, Jay Brett and Jason James. Jim married Miriam Eastman Weide on July 2, 1983.

Jim had many business ventures in his lifetime including Wildfire Collision Specialist, a family business he operated with his sons (teaching them the things he loved) doing auto body repair and auto sales, and Miriam's Restaurant. Most recently Jim and Miriam were apartment managers for Newbury Management and also managed senior communities in Colorado and California. Jim loved California.

In December 2010 poor health brought Jim and Miriam back to Mason City to be close to family. Jim received excellent care at the Mercy Cancer Center and from Hospice of North Iowa. The final move to IOOF was good and Jim liked being there. The staff was great and he didn't feel alone. Jim's family would like to thank his wife, Miriam, for all the love and care she has given our Dad.

Jim enjoyed auto racing, especially at the local dirt tracks, a love he passed on to his sons Chris and Brett. Jim loved doing body work, fixing cars and painting, whether it was on cars or painting murals on saw blades, candles and milk cans. Jim was known as a very good mechanic and talented painter. But his greatest pride was his four sons.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Henry (Hank) and June Eden; son Scott on March 11, 1997; step-mothers Lorraine and Mollie Eden; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Jim is survived by his wife, Miriam, of Mason City; sons Chris (Lori) of Urbandale and Brett (Sara) and Jason (Patti), both of Mason City; 10 grandchildren, Kyle, Michael, Zachary, Kayleigh, Tyler, Jay, Kaitlynn, Chloe, Abigail and Brady; and 4 great-grandchildren, Blake, Noah, Lennon and Kaydah. He loved you all very much!

Robert C. "Bob" Mapes

CHARLES CITY - Robert C. "Bob" Mapes, 93, lifetime resident of Charles City, died Sunday Feb. 12, 2012, at Cedar Health Care Facility of Charles City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Officiating will be Dave Byrd, chaplain of Iowa Hospice. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd.

Bob was born on Oct. 12, 1918, to Charles L. Mapes and Ada P. Uhe. He received his education at Lincoln School in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1936. Sometime after high school he traveled with a rodeo that was run by a man by the name of William Bushbomb. Bob really enjoyed this because he had a love for horses especially quarter horses.

Throughout his life he had many jobs. In Minnesota he worked for Northern Pomp Co. and in Charles City he worked for both Charles City Granite Works and the Oliver Tractor plant. His favorite work was his love of farming.

After the tornado in 1968, Bob helped reseed a baseball diamond at Wildwood Park in Charles City. The Parks Dept. honored him by engraving "Mapes Field" on a wooden sign that is attached to a post that stands next to the park. He also helped rebuild the town in many other ways when he got a job with Allied Redimix. Helping the community was how he felt that he could give back to a place he loved and called home.

After Bob retired from farming, he continued to work at the jobs he could do that included driving for Charles City Taxi, lawn care, snow removal and cutting trees down with a saw blade attached to his skid loader. It was important to Bob he keep busy because he could not handle just sitting around doing nothing.

On June 29, 1958, Robert was united in marriage to Shirley C. Kirschman Davis and they had a daughter, Julie Pauline, born Dec. 19, 1960. When Bob wasn't working he could be found sitting in his comfortable chair watching a sports game such as football and basketball or working with his hobbies including woodworking, welding and gardening. His love above all things was spending time with family and having coffee with his friends at Hy-Vee and McDonald's.

Robert is survived by two daughters, Susan (Davis) Mrs. Gary Ketelsen of Davenport and Julie McClintock of Charles City; one sister, Margjoie Groth of Charles City; one granddaughter, Sarah Greenwalt of Davenport; and one grandson, Willis Robert Harris, also of Davenport; and two nephews, Pastor Charles Groth in Kentucky and Pastor Terrance Groth in Missouri.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; one brother, Roger; one grandson, Michael; and one niece and one nephew.

Condolences may be shared with the family at
