FALLS - Ilene C. Berg, 83, of Cedar Falls died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012,
at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.
She was born July 1, 1928, in Mason City, daughter of Patrick and Ellen
(McMenamin) Harold. She married Philip S. Berg on May 1, 1954, in Mason
City. He died Jan. 12, 2009.
She graduated from St. Joseph's High School and
received her Registered Nurse degree from St. Marys School of Nursing in
Rochester, Minn. She served in the United States Air Force during the
Korean Conflict.
Survived by: two daughters, Lisa A. Berg of St. Paul, Minn., and Nancy
K. (Jeff) Johnson of Minburn; five grandchildren: Eric (Jenn) Johnson,
Anna (Ryan) Clelland, Kyle (Trina) Johnson, Wynne Johnson, and Kathryn
Johnson; and eight great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Katherine and Mary Harold and two
brothers, Donald and Dennis Harold.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with
inurnment at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Richardson Funeral Service
where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil. Visitation will also be for one hour

Brandt on Oct. 24, 1992 in Clear Lake.
Steve enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, cooking and visiting family and
friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Helen Blood.
Steve is survived by his wife, Dolores of Carpenter; son Todd (Karen)
Blood of Holmen, Wis.; step-son, Jason (Tasha) Brandt of Eureka, Kan.;
one grandchild, Morgan Blood; five step-grandchildren, Jase, Kassidy,
Krystayl, Reis, Rayna Brandt; a sister, Nancy (Jim) Ackels of Tucson,

CITY - Dean H. Brackey, 83, of Mason City, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012,
at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
In keeping with Dean's wishes, cremation will take place and no services
will be held. Inurnment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery at a
later date.
Dean Howard Brackey was born on Feb. 9, 1928, in Mason City, the son of
Ole and Paula (Peterson) Brackey. He attended Mason City High School and
graduated amongst the class of 1945. Eager to serve his country, Dean
enlisted in the
United States Navy
following his graduation. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
Upon returning to Iowa Dean began working as a construction engineer for
Iowa Road Builders.
On Sept. 20, 1972, Dean was united in marriage to Darlene Coates-Smith
in Minneapolis, Minn. In September of this year they would have
celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
In his free time, Dean enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and tending to
his vegetable garden; he was especially proud of his garlic patch.
He was a member of the
V.F.W.,
the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Highland Park Golf
Course and the Clear Lake Fishing Club.
Those grateful in sharing in Dean's life are his wife, Darlene; his
children, Dean Brackey, Jr., Debbie Desmond, Julie Shook, and Brian
Brackey; his step children, Cheryl (Dwight) Ostercamp, Barb (Larry)
Soland, Brian Smith, and Carla (Tim) Decker; his many grandchildren and
great grandchildren; his special nephew, Bob Allen; and his many other
nieces and nephews as well as extended relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings.

After retirement, Gordon moved to Clear Lake, where he volunteered as a
probation officer through AARP.

O'Donnell, Jennifer (Jeff) Ginapp, 15 grandchildren, Nicole (Matt),

Cordella was born on May 18, 1920, in Spring Grove, Ill., to John and
Susie (Miller) Miller. In Spring Grove she married George Firsching on
Nov. 27, 1940. They farmed there until 1956, when they moved to
Stacyville, Iowa. They farmed there until they moved to town in 1976.
Cordella was active in Christian Mothers and Foresters. She, along with
George, were very supportive to all of the town's functions, the church,
school, library, Fire Department and nursing home.
She enjoyed fishing, quilting, cards, scrabble, people and the rosary.
She loved anything to do with Mother Earth; gardening, yard work and
even weeding. She also loved farming, working with her husband side by
side. Cordella's greatest joy was her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, John and
Susie Miller; two daughters, Irma and Donna; sister Cecelia Miller.
Cordella is survived by a daughter, Karen (John) Marsh; brother-in-law
Joe Firsching of Mason City; sister-in-law Gert Retterath of Austin,
Minn., Theresa Ungaro of San Pedro, Calif.; many nieces and nephews.

Arthur was born on April 27, 1942, in St. Ansgar, the son of Harvey and
Nellie (Nichols) Myers. He was the third oldest of eight children, and
grew up around rural Clear Lake. Arthur served in the U.S. Marine Corps
from 1960-1964 (during the Vietnam Era).
On June 19, 1960, he was united in marriage to Iola R. Baldwin at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union, four children were born.
Art made a home for his family in the country and worked as a farmer
(his favorite).
He also worked as a millwright - climbing high in the sky building feed
systems, in the automotive department at Sears, and owned his own
welding business in later years.
Art was a family man. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, great
grandchildren, their friends and the many children at church and
preschool. He also enjoyed helping others and bird watching. Art had a
wonderful sense of humor.
Art was a member of the World Wide Church of God. He was also a longtime
member (chaplain) of the American Legion - Post 101, 40&8, the Marine
Corp League and the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. He took
great pride in being a part of the Honor Guard, serving veterans in the
Mason City and surrounding area.
Art's memory will be in the hearts and minds of his wife and companion
of 51 years, Iola Myers of Mason City; two sons: David (Diane) Myers of
Britt, and Verle (Carol) Myers of Nora Springs; two daughters: Tina
(Winston) Myers of Vinton, La, and Crystal (Matt) Lang of Mason City; 11
grandchildren: Tony (Andrea) Myers, Brandie (Neil) Pennington, Shane (Maranda)
Myers, Seth (Megan) Myers, Joe Christeson, Candi (Cody) Winter, Amber
(Sam) Heaberlin, Tonya (Christophe) Roberts, Nick Heaberlin, Kyle Lang,
and Hanna Lang; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Roy (Sherry) Myers
of Mason City and Ray (Marlys) Myers of Mason City; three sisters: Rose
Ann (BJ) Hinderacker of Garner, Violet (Merle) Hultman of Oakland, Neb.,
and Iris Deckard of Clear Lake. He is also survived by many nieces,

Pearl moved to Heritage with her husband in October of 2011. She
suffered a short bout with cancer.

Clarice was born on Sept. 24, 1923, to Fed and Matilda Anderson of
Emmons, Minn. She graduated from Emmons High School in 1941. She worked
at the Banquet restaurant in Albert Lea, Minn., after high school where
she learned a lot of her excellent cooking skills.
On Oct. 6, 1946, she was united in marriage to Tillman Christianson and
they celebrated 62 years of marriage together. She was a full-time wife
and homemaker. Clarice and Tillman always were found together, whether
at work or leisure. She was active in church, ladies aid, circle, and
altar guild at Silver Lake Lutheran Church and was currently a member of
First Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Clarice and Tillman farmed in Hartland Township, Worth County, Iowa for
50 years. Clarice enjoyed taking care of the chickens and gathering
eggs. She was known to many as the egg lady because she delivered eggs
around Northwood to different businesses.
After moving to Northwood, she worked for Northwood-Kensett Elementary
school in the cafeteria, and also in the kitchen at the Northwood
Lutheran Retirement Home for a number of years.
Clarice enjoyed playing cards, square dancing, polka dancing, listening
to barbershop music, and entertaining family and friends. She enjoyed
cooking and baking many of her favorite dishes for family. She loved
gardening and taking care of her flowers. She especially enjoyed playing
games with the grand children.
Clarice was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Tillman.
She is survived by her two sons: Tom and his wife Kathy(Leidal)
Christianson and Ron and his wife Linda(Hanson) Christianson, both of
Northwood. She has three grandchildren who are all married including:
Tim (Sara) Christianson, Kim (Heath) Merz, and Erin (Phil) Bubb, and

CITY - Pearl Marie Davis Wienke, 90, of Mason City, formerly of
Rockford, Ill., beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother
went to be with her Saviour on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at the Heritage
Care Center, Mason City. Pearl moved to Heritage with her husband in
October of 2011. She suffered a short bout with cancer.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the First
Covenant Church, Highway 122 at South Ohio, with Pastor Marty Garrett
officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, and continue at the

Pearl was born July 10, 1921, in Randalia, the daughter of George and
Martha Fern (Knight) Davis. Following graduation from Randalia High
School, she left the farm to begin working. Pearl married Gordon Henry
Wienke Aug. 28, 1953, in Elgin, Ill. The Wienkes were long-time
residents of Rockford, Ill. They were members of the Broadway Covenant
Church in Rockford before their move to Iowa.
Left to cherish her loving memory and great love of family are her
husband, Gordon of Mason City; children, Richard (Carol) Wienke of
Algonquin, Ill., Shirley Crane of Mason City, Nancy (Gary) Golian; of
Rockford, Ill., Margie (Tom) Lineback of Roscoe, Ill., Tammy (Dave)
Menke of Rockford, Ill., and Tom Wienke of Pekin, Ill.; grandchildren,

LAKE
MILLS - Pauline H. Anfinson, 73, of Lake Mills, died Thursday, Feb. 2,
2012, at Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. today, Sunday, Feb. 5, at Salem Lutheran
Church in Lake Mills, with Vicar Melinda McCluskey officiating.
Inurnment will take place at a later date in South Dakota.
Family will greet friends from 2-3 p.m. today, at Salem Lutheran Church
prior to the memorial service.
Pauline H. "The Swede" Anfinson was born June 7, 1938, in Labolt, S.D.,
the daughter of Herbert and Olivia (Johnson) Englund, and she had eight
brothers and sisters.
Pauline married Robert L. Anfinson on June 7, 1958, in Watertown, S.D.
They lived in Watertown, Mason City and moved to Lake Mills in 1963.
They have two children, Peggy and Todd.
Pauline was very creative and enjoyed cooking, arts and crafts,
entertaining friends and family, taking pictures, playing cards,
traveling and attempting golf and gardening. She was a member of
numerous clubs and organizations. She was an active memory of Salem
Lutheran Church. Pauline was a "doer," whenever anything needed to be
done, or people needed help, she was first in line to do whatever was
needed.
Pauline is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Peggy Anfinson,
Houston, Texas; son Todd (Naomi) Anfinson, Dallas, Texas; three
grandchildren, Josh, Amber and Paige Anfinson; and three
great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Rayni and Kaden Anfinson; as well as
numerous nieces, nephews, cousins in the U.S. and Sweden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Oliver, Homer, Edsel
Englund; and sisters Blenda Reoh and Audrey O'Steen.

- Memorial services for Penny Cazanas will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday,
Feb. 7, at Lensing's Oak Hill in Coralville.

Penny was born June 23, 1957, in Emmetsburg, the daughter of A. John and
Maryellen Meiers Cazanas.
Penny was employed as a senior technical editor at Pearson since 1991.
Prior to that, she lived in Clear Lake and Minneapolis.
Penny attended the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City, and was
a past member of Bicyclists of Iowa City. She was a member of the
Society of Technical Communicators. While living in Clear Lake, she
volunteered at the Humane Society.
Penny was a generous and loving aunt, and she loved the time spent with
her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed bicycling and rode several times on
RAGBRAI.
Survivors include her mother, Maryellen Cazanas of Coralville; two
sisters, Vicki (Dick) Siefers of Coralville and Joanna (Scot) Lindley of
Nora Springs; her nieces and nephews, Andrea Siefers of Raleigh, N.C.,
Kyle Siefers of Iowa City and Cody and Amber Lindley of Nora Springs.
She was preceded in death by her father, A. John Cazanas.

Sandra was born Nov. 26, 1946, in Mason City, the daughter of Harry E.
and Ida (Cooley) Morse. She grew up in the Fertile area. Sandra
graduated from Forest City High School in 1965. She later attended and
graduated from Capri Cosmetology School.
She worked many jobs in her life; cosmetology instructor at Forester
Beauty Salon, delivered Winnebagos, cooked at the Grand Café and managed
several convenience stores in Minnesota.
Sandra married David Gjerdahl on Oct. 1, 1994, in Rake. They moved to
Arizona in 2006.
She enjoyed doing crafts, cooking, decorating, watching movies, spending
time with her family and playing Farmtown on Facebook. She was a
wonderful mother and her grandchildren meant the world to her.
Sandra is survived by her husband, David Gjerdahl, Quartzsite, Ariz.;
three children, Tracy Burke, Mason City, Tara Dahn, Forest City, and
Travis (Stacy) Burke, Forest City; thirteen grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; four brothers, Steve (Geri) Morse, St. Paul Park,
Minn., Tim (Kathy) Morse, Scott Morse and Jon (Debbie) Morse all of
Anchorage, Ala.; and one sister, Elin (Harold) Miner, Fertile;
sister-in-law Elida Morse, Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Pat Morse and son Troy
Burke.

Kevin Wayne Gunsallus, 54, of Clear Lake, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 1,
2012, at his home.

Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., in Mason City, with Pastor
Dan Gerrietts and Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. A luncheon will be

will be in Osage Cemetery, Osage.
There will be a visitation from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at Ward-Van

Kevin was born on Oct. 22, 1957, in Osage, the son of James and Phyllis
Gunsallus, and was the oldest of their three children. He grew up in
rural Osage before moving to Clear Lake in 1983.
Kevin is survived by his parents, James and Phyllis Gunsallus; a
brother, Michael Gunsallus; a sister, Venita (Denis) Chezik; three
daughters, Jacqlyn (Bill) Ferjak of Minneapolis, Minn., Jennifer (Tom)
Faber of Clear Lake, and Jessica (Pete) Cash of Ventura; and by three
grandchildren, Lorelei and James (Jessica) Cash, and Kennidy (Jennifer)
Faber. Kevin is also survived by three nieces and nephews, Jeremy,
Daniel and Megan (Venita) Chezik.
While Kevin was not working in his chosen profession, design engineering
at IMT in Garner, he enjoyed many things in life. His passions included
motorcycles, cars - Corvettes in particular, snowmobiles, Vikings,
Hawkeyes, and the Minnesota Twins. He often tried to enjoy many of these
activities on the same weekend.
When he wasn't out enjoying those activities he always enjoyed his other
passion, spending time with his family. Kevin often visited his parents
on the weekend and cherished many days spending time with his daughters
and their families. From play dates with his grandchildren to going to
help work on his daughters' homes or out to sporting events with them,
work or play, any excuse to spend time with his family was a treasured
day.

Armella "Mellie" Knapp
CHARLES CITY - Armella "Mellie" Knapp, 72, of 1117 Walnut Ave.,
Charles City, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at the 11th Street Chautauqua
Guest Home in Charles City.
Per her wishes, she will be cremated with private family services at a
later date.
Mellie was born on April 11, 1939, at Osage, the daughter of Claude and
Velma Willsher.
She was married to Carl Knapp on Nov. 3, 1956, in Charles City. Mellie's
life revolved around farming with her husband Carl and raising their
three children.
Mellie is survived by her husband of 55 years, Carl; daughters, Cindi
(Dennis) Shanks, Deb (Mike Pappas) Smith, and son Chuck (Deanne) Knapp;
along with nine grandchildren.
Her parents, one grandchild, and one great- grandchild preceded her in
death.

CITY - Helen R. Melsh, 84, of Mason City passed away Friday, Feb. 3,
2012, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Per Helen's
wishes, no funeral services will be held.
Helen Ruth Melsh was born on Dec. 4, 1927, in Mena, Ark., to William and
Ida Cummins Godfrey. She met and married Saragosa Jimenez and moved to
Mason City. To this union, six children were born: Valorie, Douglas,
Stephanie, John, Elizabeth and David. Later in life, Helen divorced
Saragosa and married Edward Melsh. Helen was a wonderful homemaker
taking precious care of her children.
Helen was a fabulous cook and enjoyed reading. She was a rabid fan of
the Boston Celtics, Oakland Raiders and Iowa Hawkeyes. Most importantly,
her children were here pride and joy.
She will be missed by her four children, Valorie (Bob) Rink, New River,
Ariz., Douglas (Coral) Jimenez, Ventura, Calif., Stephanie (Tony)
Orozco, Mason City, and Reverend John (Wanda) Jimenez, Omaha, Neb., 15
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren,
son-in-law, Kirk Mathews, Hampton and her brother, William Godfrey,
Atascadero, Calif.
Helen was preceded in death by her husbands, Saragosa and Edward,
children, Elizabeth and David, grandchildren, Matthew and Eric, and
sister, Lucille Watkins.
