Robert N. "Bob" Bormann
U.S. Army   WWII

Algona - A funeral Mass for Robert N. "Bob" Bormann will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with Father Edward M. Girres officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Algona with military honors conducted by the Livermore American Legion Post No. 415.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Friday) at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona, with a Scripture Prayer Service beginning at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Bob was born (at the family farm) in Riverdale Township, Kossuth County on March 12, 1925, to Henry and Victoria (Kenkel) Bormann. He started school in the local country school in September, 1930, and the following year he went to school in St. Joe, and graduated from there in May, 1942.

The following winter, Bob started working for Uncle Peter Bormann and worked for him for most of two years. Bob entered the Army in April, 1945, serving during World War II, and was discharged in November 1946, spending the time stateside.

Bob married Phyllis Mergen on Jan. 31, 1950, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore. They moved to a farm north of St. Joe, where they resided until 1989, when they retired and moved to Algona.

Bob helped Francis and Dick Erpelding with woodworking and made his family many projects. This is where he lost his finger and started with "the glove." Bob was past Commander of the Livermore American Legion Post No. 415, past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Post No. 4520 in St. Joe, and was a past board president at Farmer's Cooperative at Livermore.

Bob enjoyed farming and still getting up into the combine every year. He enjoyed Bingo, cribbage, crossword puzzles, playing (and counting) cards and hearing old stories and jokes. He enjoyed attending the kids' sporting events. He worked hard on the farm. Even though he was a quiet man in later life, he loved being around people and joking with the little kids he encountered. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he enjoyed watching them raid Grandma's candy drawer at home. In the nursing home he won candy bars at Bingo so the kids got to raid his drawer there too.

Robert became a resident of the Algona Manor Care Center in April, 2009. He died there on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at the age of 87.

Surviving are his children, Louis (Jodie) Bormann, Daniel Bormann, Brian (Jeana) Bormann, all of Algona, Diane Bormann of Brookfield, Wis., Charlene (Dale) Givens of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Gary (Kalissa) Bormann of Mondville, Ala., and Gayle (Andy) Smith, of Mason City. God's gift to her was the birth of his son and her final freedom from her pain.

Funeral services for Jean Markham will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond. Pastor Douglas Farrell will officiate. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation for Jean Markham will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Jean Rae Markham, sixth of seven children of Ray and Ruth Wharton, was born November 3, 1928, near Rowan. She grew up in Rowan where she attended school. Jean played girls basketball in high school and graduated from Rowan High School at the age of 16.

She worked as a nurses aide at the Hampton Hospital after graduation. She then worked at Mode-O-Day Lingerie Factory in Mason City sewing clothes and lingerie until her marriage to her high school sweetheart, Frederick Walter Markham in 1948.

To this union three girls were born, Peggy Elaine, Diane Ruth and Suzanne Fay.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Freddie, her daughter, Peggy Wolters, her parents, Ruth and Ray Wharton, her brothers Roscoe, Robert and Ronald Wharton, sister, Joyce Hackbarth, Fred's parents, Ellis and Lizzie Markham, sister-in-laws; Maurine Peters, Gladys Leist and Norma Wharton, brother-in-laws; Myron Hackbarth, Raymond Wheeler, George Leist, Valley Davis and Richard Larick, nieces; Pam Johnson and Margaret Simonson, and nephews; Tommy Wharton, Douglas Markham and Douglas Wheeler.

Jean cherished her family and getting together with the Whartons and the Markhams.
Jean helped Fred with farming at Thornton and also when they moved to the farm by Clarion and Lake Cornelia. She worked ten years at Meredith Corporation from 1980 to 1990 and retired with many fond memories of her co-workers, bosses, and all the good recipes they traded at Meredith!

They moved from the farm in Clarion to Belmond and enjoyed living in town. Fred passed away in February 2004 from complications of his rheumatoid arthritis and congestive heart failure just before their 56th anniversary.

They were married at the Little Brown Church on Valentine's Day on February 14, 1948, and the family always said this was so Freddie would not forget the day of their anniversary! He often gave her something red for their anniversary, a new red dress or red suit, and one year it was a red Ford Escort station wagon.

Jean and Fred loved watching the NBA and MLB on TV. If you called her the last two minutes of a close game between Iowa and Indiana, you might not get her full attention!
Even in her eighties, Jean could still talk baseball with the best of them.

Jean was a long-time member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond. She served the Lord faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, served on the Social Committee, as a Deaconess, and Missionary Treasurer. She was known for her cooking and baking of special treats.

Those mourning her death are her two daughters, Diane (Ronald) Kallal, Fieldon, Ill., Suzanne Markham Kocurek (Randy Anastasi, Stacy, Minn.) North Branch, Minn., son-in-law, Gary (Rachel) Wolters of Forest City, Iowa, eight grandchildren, Lynn (Shereen) Wolters, St. Paul, Minn., Robert (Kasey) Wolters, Albert Lea, Minn., Heidi Wolters, Plymouth, Minn., Joan (Brad) Roach, Fieldon, Ill., Fred Kallal, Eureka, Ill., Russel (Meagan) Kallal, Brighton, Ill., Woodrow Kocurek IV and Amanda Jean Kocurek, North Branch, Minn., and seven great-grandchildren, Katelyn Smith, James Holmes, Elliana, Madeline, Abigail and Violet Wolters, Chase Kallal, and two great-grandchildren on the way!

Duane Gossman

THOMPSON - Duane Gossman, 84, of Thompson, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, with Father Dennis Miller of St. James Catholic Church officiating.
Inurnment will be in the spring at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home.
Duane was born in Shell Creek Township, near Platt Center, Neb., on April 11, 1928, to Leo and Julia (Kaipust) Gossman.
He was the only son, and his siblings included older sisters Ivona, Marjorie and Evelyn, and younger sisters Arlene and Phyllis. In 1944 when Duane was 16, the family moved to a farm that Leo purchased five miles southwest of Thompson. Duane became very integrally tied to the farm and its upkeep, and did not return to school but devoted his time to improving the property and assisting his father.
He met Lila M. Arndt at a skating rink in Blue Earth. Lila later moved to an apartment in Thompson and eventually the two were married on June 7, 1950, in the priest's house of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Buffalo Center.
They remained on the family farm, moving briefly across the section until his parents retired from farming at which point they returned, and Duane remained there the rest of his life. To this union were born five children: Duane Jr., Bridget, Diane, Linda and Kent.
After his parents' death Duane purchased part of the original acreage. The family milked cows, raised chickens, beef, hogs, and any other animal enterprise at which Duane felt he could excel. This developed a solid work ethic in his children, and a strong sense of values.
Duane was an enterprising jack-of-all-trades and was a self-taught handyman in whatever he set his mind to. He especially liked aspects involving mechanics.
Along with being a full-time farmer, Duane also worked at a variety of jobs. He was a self-employed mechanic in a business called Duke's Service. He worked many years part time at Van Horn's in Buffalo Center, as well as a delivery driver for Winnebago. He did both custom combining and corn shelling for farmers in the area. After selling off most of the farm animals, he took a job at Pamida, as well as Casey's and drove school bus for Forest City Schools.
Duane had an uncanny knack of striking up conversations with people he didn't know everywhere he went. This was especially enjoyable for him when he frequented area casinos.
His hobbies included collecting antiques, collectable cars, fixing and repairing vintage tractors, riding motorcycle, appliance repair and rebuilding automobiles. He also would custom-build trailers from scratch, doing most of the calculations in his head. Some were quite elaborate and complicated in scope.
He was also a wealth of knowledge and was filled with many stories and sayings including keepers passed down by his father such as "Watch your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves."
Duane is survived by four children: Bridget (Jerry Hanson) Neilon of Northwood, Diane Penning of Byron, Minnesota, Linda (Mark) Kemmerer of Clear Lake, and Kent (Terry Welsh) Gossman of Renton, Washington; 10 grandchildren: Michael, Dawn, Wade, Brianne, Brandon, Brett, Trevor, Mitchell, Kyla and Morgan; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Marjorie, Evelyn and Phyllis; his son Duane (Bud) Jr.; his grandson Jarrett Roberts; and a special friend Shirley.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato with Father John Kunz offering the funeral mass.
Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. the same day. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Peosta, Iowa.
He was born April 2, 1920, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Mary (Powers) and Peter McDonald. He moved to Peosta with his family as a young boy. He graduated from the Red Brick Country School, District 8 and Peosta High School. He also attended Bayless Business College in Dubuque.
He spent his career in the shoe business and was employed by Montgomery Ward and the Big Shoe Store, both in Dubuque, before coming to Mason City. He and his family moved to Mankato in 1972 when he was made manager of the Gallenkamp Shoe Store there and district manager of several company stores in Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota. He was inducted into the Gallenkamp President's Club for sales performance in 1976. He retired in 1985.
In 1944, while attending daily Mass at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque, he met the love of his life, Janann Cannon of Dubuque. They danced and dined at all the ballrooms in the Dubuque and Chicago areas, and saw all the musicals of the day. They were married in 1948 and had four children. Janann died in 2007.
Wherever he lived he was animated by concern for family, faith and community. His principle for real estate was always "walking distance to church" - three blocks in Mason City, two in Mankato. He loved meeting people whether at work, at church or in his residential communities later in life.
He is survived by his four children: Terry (Mary Ann) of Ann Arbor, Mich., Tim (Karen) of Chicago, Ill., Maureen (Paul) Trefry of Beverly, Mass., and Sheila (Gary Jewell) of St. Louis Mo.; grandchildren Peter Trefry, Kathryn, Brett and Harrison Jewell; his sister Lois Sodawasser of Waterloo and Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janann; sister, Mary Jane McAuliffe; brother, Tom McDonald; and grandson, Kyle Jewell.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial contributions to Newman High School.
