The Rev. Thomas R. Balm (1932-2012)

GARNER - The Rev. Thomas Ree Balm, 80, of Garner, died at his home, Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3, at United Methodist Church, Garner with the Rev. Paul Evans officiating.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, at the church fellowship hall.

Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

He was born Aug. 14, 1932, in Fort Dodge, son of Thomas T. and Ivadel Balm. He married Darline Miller in 1954. He then married Marilyn Wilson in 1987.

He graduated from Fort Dodge High School and attended Westmar College in LeMars. He attended seminary and served United Methodist Churches in Bolan, Lansing, Dysart, LeMars, Cedar Falls, Estherville, Davenport and Eldora. In 2001, Tom and Marilyn started spending their winters in Florida.

Tom is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his former wife, Darline Balm-Demmel of Cedar Falls; three sons, Stephen (Sara) of Spirit Lake, Jonathon (Angie Story) of Brooklyn and Brian (Nancy) of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Michelle Balm of Jesup; a stepdaughter, Kathy Janssen of Mason City; a stepson, David (Shelly) Alsvig of Boerne, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sally Dempsey; a brother, Jerry; and a granddaughter, Aubrey Oliver.

William F. Brownlow

Riceville - William F. Brownlow, 70, of Riceville, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends may call Sunday Dec. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville and one hour before services on Monday at the church.

Mason City - James M. Jackson, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa, Mason City.

Stephen C. "Wally" Larson

DeKalb, Ill. - Stephen C. "Wally" Larson, 59 of DeKalb, Ill., passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, Ill.

There will be a family graveside service on Saturday, December 8, 2012, followed by a celebration of his life at noon at the St John's Lutheran Church in Woden, Iowa.

He will always be remembered for his great laugh, his smile, humor, and his love of golfing He was a member of the Sycamore Elks Club, DeKalb Moose Club and the Moose Golf League, and the River Heights Golf League.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1953, in Britt, the son of Wallace and Beverly (Potter) Larson. He graduated from Lake Mills in 1971. Wally was employed by 3M as a supervisor and recently retired after 31 years. On April 12, 1980, he was united in marriage to Kristi Buns until her passing in May of 1993. They were blessed with three children.

On Aug. 1, 2008, he married Opal Franklin in Las Vegas, Nev.

He is survived by his wife, Opal, his three children, Dylan Larson, Nicklys Larson, and Anna Larson, all of DeKalb, Ill., three stepchildren, Marty Franklin of Wisconsin, Shawn Franklin, and Heather Franklin of DeKalb, his grandchildren, Daymon Wallace Halerewicz, Delilah, Nicole, Dylan, and Liberty Franklin, Zachary, Philip, and Christopher LeRoy, his mother, Beverly Larson of Forest City, and a sister, Barb (Mark) Wilson of Battlefield, Mo., and several niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kristi Larson, his father, Wallace Larson, and his sister, Kay Lee.

Elmer O. Trampel

Mason City - Elmer O. Trampel, 90, of Mason City, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Elmer will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth Street, Mason City, with the Rev. John A. Gossman as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City where full military honors will be conducted by the Mason City veterans.

Norman C. Ahnemann

FOREST CITY - Norman C. Ahnemann, 86, of Forest City, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Elaine Siemson officiating.
Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Norman Conrad Ahnemann was born Jan. 13, 1926, to Henry and Barbara Ahnemann in Walters, Minn. He attended Alden High School, graduating in 1944. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy. After the service, he spent several years playing semi-professional baseball as a pitcher until he suffered a career-ending injury.

He met and married Joyce Ann Englehardt of Kenosha, Wis., on Dec. 4, 1954, and celebrated 42 years of marriage together.

They farmed near Leland, Iowa, for many years. Together they enjoyed golfing, fishing and traveling, often delivering Winnebago motor homes all over the United States. They had four children: Dan, Janeen, Nancy and Kent.

Following the death of Joyce on Oct. 20, 1996, he married Claudia Sampson on July 29, 2000.

They resided half of the year in Forest City, close to his family, and half of the year in Sun City West, Ariz.

Norman is survived by his wife, Claudia; his son Dan (Vivian) Ahnemann of Clear Lake, and their daughters Brittany (Rich) of Kansas City, Mo., Katie (James) of Clear Lake and their children MacKensie and Maggie; daughter Janeen (Rick) Wolter and their children Alicia and Ben of LaCrescent, Minn.; daughter Nancy (Steve) Helm of Forest City and their children Adam (Trista) Helm and great-granddaughter Hailey of Woden, Cody Helm of Des Moines, Kirk Helm of Forest City and son Kent (Erin) Ahnemann and their children Cody Meyer of Indianola, Iowa, Camrin Meyer, Jacee and Cade Ahnemann of Aurelia, Iowa.

He is also survived by a special family member, Marianne and her husband, Rene Hansen, of Denmark and their children Mathias and Anja, a former exchange student who lived with the Ahnemann family. He is survived by several nieces and nephews as well.

Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his parents Henry and Barbara; his brother Elmer; and his sisters Hazel Meyer, Ruby Ahnemann, Ruth Almberg and Myrtle Niebuhr.

Martin L. Bachman

GARNER - Martin L. Bachman, 83, of Garner, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Martin Luther Bachman, the son of Martin George and Tillie (Kraus) Bachman, was born on Jan. 7, 1929, in Klemme. He graduated from Klemme High School in 1946. After graduation, he worked on the family farm with his mother.

On Oct. 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Vera Simmons at the Immanuel Reformed Church in Klemme. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Garner. He prided himself on his herd of miniature horses, longhorn cattle, raising exotic birds and enjoyed traveling to horse sales around the Midwest. In his free time Martin also enjoyed watching RFD-TV and listening to country music.

In 2002 Martin and Vera moved into Garner and enjoyed traveling around to visit friends and casinos. Martin's pride and joy was his family. He cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church of Garner, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vera; two daughters: Julia (Tom) Schultz, Garner, and Darla, (Jeff) Mallas, Ogden; a son, Martin (Yvette) Bachman, Garner; grandchildren, Angie (Scott) Van Dusseldorp, Garner, Tara (Tim) Eisenlohr, Mason City, Joe Schultz, Chicago, Ill., Tom (Heather) Hartwig, Clear Lake, Tad (Mallory) Hartwig, Garner, Martin Nicholas Bachman, Los Angeles, Calif., Samuel Bachman, Los Angeles, Calif., and Colton (Brittany) Bachman, Ames; great-grandchildren, Jack, Rafe, Caleb, and Emily Van Dusseldorp, Cade and Reid Hartwig, Teagen, Tatem and Talon Eisenlohr, and Piper Hartwig; a brother, Eugene (Janice) Bachman, Clear Lake; and a sister-in-law, Dena Bachman, Fairbank, Iowa.


Martin was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Leroy, Alvin and Raymond; and three sisters: Edith Montgomery, Gertrude and Dorothy Bachman.

Arvid Holtan
U.S.Navy   WWII

JOICE - Arvid Holtan, 85, of Joice, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, with Pastor Clarence Baalson officiating.

Burial will be at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City.

Arvid was born on April 2, 1927, at Rosendale, Mo., to Arthur E. and Mabel (Halverson) Holtan. While Arv was still young, the family returned to North Iowa where they resided and farmed west of Lake Mills. The family later moved to a farm south of Joice, Iowa.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April 1945, and graduated from Fertile High School that year in absentia. He served in the Pacific Theatre on the island of Guam during the later days of World War II.

After completing his service in the Navy, Arvid attended and graduated from Waldorf Junior College in Forest City, and Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. Then, for several years, he taught Veteran's Training on the GI Bill.

He later worked as a turkey specialist for Golden Sun Milling Co., before moving back to the farm near Joice in 1958, where he resided the remainder of his life.

On Aug. 5, 1956, at Estherville, Iowa, Arvid was united in marriage to Maryon Anderson. To their union one child was born, son Bruce L. Holtan.

Arvid and Maryon farmed together until their retirement in 1990.

During the past 23 years they wintered in Florida, and enjoyed participating in many community activities.

His hobbies were many, including camping, wood carving, model engine building, exhibiting at engine shows, and serving as 4-H leader. He was very proud to have had the opportunity to go on the World War II Veteran's Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., during the summer of 2010.

Arvid was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Lawrence Heyerdahl Jr.; and his in-laws, Gus and Bertha Anderson.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Maryon; son, Bruce (Evelyn); sister, Norma (Don) Wakeley of Bellevue, Wash.; sister, Betty Heyerdahl of Green Bay, Wis.; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials to Heritage Park of North Iowa, Forest City, in Arvid's name, would be appreciated.

Ruth Johnson

ALGONA - Funeral Mass for Ruth Johnson will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona with Father Edward Girres officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Wesley.

Visitation will be today, Monday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona.

Ruth Jane Vaughan Ricke Johnson was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Ogden, Iowa, the daughter of August and Lillie (Christensen) Vaughan. She grew up and attended school in Ogden before moving to Wesley in 1941.

On June 16, 1941, Ruth was united in marriage to Edward Lewis Ricke at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ogden. After their marriage, they lived in Wesley before moving to Boone in 1951 and then returning to Wesley in 1955. Edward died in October 22, 1964. Ruth continued to live in Wesley and worked at Winnebago Industries for 16 years.
On Feb. 11, 1984, she was united in marriage to Ivan E. Johnson and they lived on a farm near Wesley. She moved to Algona in February of 2001, shortly after Ivan's death on July 26, 2000.

Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family and being at home with her feline companion, Freckles. She spent much of her time making quilts and sharing them with her family. Ruth was a member of St. Cecelia Parish.

Ruth died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa. She was 88.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Joan and Gerald Morgan of River Junction, Rose Ricke of Des Moines, Henry and Janet Ricke of Algona; stepchildren, Steve and Clair Johnson of Connersville, Ind., Ronald and Edie Johnson of Wesley, Roland and Kathy Johnson of Mennard, Texas, Sigrid Johnson and friend Leo Walding of Woodbury, Minn.; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Anna Carlson of Clarinda, Dorothy Clause of Jefferson and Agnes Lowe of Adel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; son-in-law, Charles Ricke; sisters, Luella Earl, Mercedes Baker, Mary Vaughan, Rose McClain and Delores Cary; and a brother, Leonard Vaughan.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, boxing, dancing, listening to Musica Mexicana, and watching Westerns. He especially liked Westerns that included John Wayne, his favorite actor. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Lupe was born in Wellington, Kansas, on May 23, 1932, to Luis and Nicolasa Ponce. They moved to North Platte, Neb., where he helped his parents with their family restaurant Tampico Cafe. He was a North Platte Golden Glove boxer.

He married Victoria Polanco in 1951 in North Platte, Neb. They moved to Mason City in 1968. He worked at Deckers meat packing plant until its closing. Lupe was employed by Armour Foods and retired after 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria; his 13 children: Joe Ann (Nick) Melhus, Bernabay Ponce, Gerald Ponce, Paul (Sheila) Ponce, Christine Nava (Gilberto Andrade), Kim (Randy) Hippen, Veronica (Ledo) Hernandez, Desiree (Lee) Virgin, Valerie (Tom) Winter, Fredericka (Chris) Miller, Raquel Ponce, Gabriel "Gabe" Ponce and Joaquin Nava; special friend, Jose Sierra; one brother, Joe Ponce; two sisters: Juanita (Pete) Luna and Mary Carreras, all of North Platte, Neb.; 41 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Jimmy Ponce; one infant granddaughter; two sisters: Anita Carrazales and Georgoria Hernandez-Guerrero; two brothers: Raymond Ponce and Jesse Ponce; and Ian Decker, father of his great-granddaughter Cecilia Decker.

Elmer Trampel, son of August and Anna (Arends) Trampel, was born Feb. 22, 1922, near Klemme, Iowa. Elmer graduated from the Klemme High School in 1938 and attended North Iowa Teachers College, now known as the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and served in the combat infantry in the European Theatre. After the war, he finished his service as a military police officer at Galesburg, Ill., and traveled with the military volleyball team, touring in Europe before being honorably discharged in 1946.

Elmer met Irene Lansing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake while he was home on leave. They were united in marriage on Feb. 10, 1948, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. To this union, two children were born: Michael and Mary Kay.

The family farmed in the Dows and Alexander area for many years, developing a purebred Holstein dairy herd. They then moved to Mason City in 1998.

Elmer and Irene loved to dance and traveled to many ballrooms throughout the Midwest. Elmer and Irene shared their life together for more than 64 years. He enjoyed sports in general, especially playing town team softball and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Twins. He was an active volunteer as a Mercy Ambassador during his retirement years.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

Elmer is survived by his loving wife, Irene; children, Michael (Pat) Trampel and Mary Kay (David) Allen; grandchildren, Crystal Trampel, Rachel Trampel, Kaitlyn Trampel, Nathan (Jessica) Allen and Holly Allen; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Jerry) O'Neill and Geraldine Lansing; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Andrew Trampel; and sisters, Gertie Marshall and Esther Carolus.

Roger Birdsall

SHEFFIELD - Roger Birdsall, 73, of Sheffield, died Monday, November 26, 2012, at the Sheffield Care Center.


Memorial reception will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ridgestone Golf and Country Club in Sheffield.

Jerry Roger Birdsall was born Sept. 9, 1939, in Hampton, a son of Thomas and Madeliene (Paul-Bell) Birdsall. He was educated and graduated from the Hampton High School.

Roger worked at the Ready Mix plant in Hampton, becoming the plant manager for several years. He then became the plant manager for the Ready Mix plant in Davenport, a post he held for over 14 years until he retired in 2003.


Roger was united in marriage with Delores (Evans) Wiemann on Dec. 21, 1974, at their home in Sheffield.

Roger was active in his community being involved with the Jaycees, Lions, Sheffield Care Center Board and the Deerfield Place Assisted Living Board. He was also on the Sheffield Zoning Advisory Committee. He enjoyed spending his time woodworking and golfing and playing cards in the "Cribbage Den."

Living family members include his wife: Dee; children: Lori (Kim) Ruddick; Steven (Charlotte) Birdsall; Timothy (Joni) Birdsall; Neil Birdsall; Nicholas (Krisha) Birdsall; stepchildren: Chuck (Julie) Wiemann; Lesly Wiemann; Kelly Wiemann and Terry Wiemann; 16 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; half-brother: Garry (Brenda) Bell; special aunt: Selma "Sally"Birdsall; cousins, nieces, nephews, loyal classmates and friends.

MASON CITY - Donna L. Bramley, 79, of Mason City, died Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Donna Lee Richards was born on March 20, 1933, in Pierre, S.D., the daughter of Roger and Edith (Gurney) Richards. She attended various schools in her younger years before her family settled in Mason City. She graduated in the Mason City High School class of 1951.
As a young woman, Donna stayed busy working from the home and raising her two children. Following her children's high school graduation Donna entered the workforce in 1975.

On November 24, 1978, she was united in marriage to Ronald Bramley at Grace United Methodist Church in Mason City.

In their free time Donna and Ron enjoyed traveling; they loved taking their motor home on cross- country trips and even into Canada. Donna also liked camping, riding bicycles, golfing, and helping Ron remodel their home. Over the years she built countless wooden cars which showcased her talent and craftsmanship, and collected numerous "Garfield" pieces.

Donna will be remembered as a strong-willed and independent woman who was always there for her family.

Paul was born Feb. 23, 1935, in Avery Township, Hancock County, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Pearl (Carberry) Hegland. He was confirmed in 1950 at the Six Mile Grove Church near Lyle, Minnesota. Paul graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1953.

On June 20, 1959, he married Margaret Perau at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. He was active in the Trinity Lutheran Church his entire married life. Paul held various jobs throughout his life and retired from Fieldstone Cabinetry in 1998. He always enjoyed farming, gardening, and spending time with his family, most especially attending all of the activities of his grandchildren. Paul also enjoyed coffee time and fellowship with the guys.

Paul is survived by his wife, Margaret Hegland of Osage; his children: Sheryl (Alan) Nelson of St. Ansgar, Sharlene (Fred) Sorensen of Waltham, Minn., Mary Ann (Kevin) Hudziak of Wild Rose, Wis., Marjorie (Kevin) Simpson of Hudson, Merlyn (Lisa) Hegland of Rudd; ten grandchildren: Jacob, Maria and Leah Nelson, Lezlie and Lyle Sorensen, Darren and Tanner Hudziak, Spencer and Connor Simpson and Lilly Hegland; and two nieces and two nephews.

James Matthew Jackson, the son of James Jackson Sr. and Ruby (Hartman) was born Feb. 17, 1929, in Washington Township located in Franklin County, Iowa. He was one of seven children.

Jim graduated from the Hampton High School. James was united in marriage with Lucille Root on Sept. 5, 1948. To this union, they were blessed with five children: Diane, Gary, Duane, David and Steven. On May 29, 1981, James married Delores Taylor.

Jim spent his younger years with many different employment occupations, ranging from helping as a farm hand, to his favorite profession and pastime as a pastry chef for numerous years all over the state. James continued his working life until his final years of his working life as a manufacturer at Hagie in Clarion, and then retiring at Electrolux in Webster City.

James had numerous hobbies including hunting wild game to fishing in the great outdoors. Jim marched to the beat of his own drum and continued up until his final days. Jim loved to be with his family and friends making memories that lasted a lifetime.

Charlotte Lucille (Barth) O'Brien

Charlotte was born on March 9, 1918, in Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa, the daughter of Harry F. and Mae (Fisher) Barth and died Monday, December 3, 2012, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

She received her education in the rural Floyd County schools and graduated from Greene High School in 1936.

On November 18, 1956, she was united in marriage to Lyle Max O'Brien in Tucson, Ariz. They lived in Arizona for a year before returning to Greene.

In 1960 they purchased the Standard Oil Station from Lew Majewski and sold it to Mark O'Brien in 1980.

Charlotte worked with her father and brother, Darrel, as a bookkeeper in the Chevrolet Garage in Greene for 25 years before retiring. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, unit 268, for 55 years.

She was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, where she was baptized and confirmed in 1936. Charlotte enjoyed golf, bowling, and traveling with friends. She loved to watch sports on TV, especially the Cubs.

Charlotte is survived by brother and sister-in-laws, Neil and Marge O'Brien, Greene, and Shirley and Bill Henly, Clarksville, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle in 1980, her brother Darrel Barth and his wife Roberta, her brother Mervin Barth, and brother and sister-in-laws, John O'Brien, Bob (Eloise) O'Brien, Imogene (Don) Abbott and her parents.

Chan was born June 4, 1915, the son of Dr. Channing and Norra (Allin) Dakin. He graduated from Mason City High School and Mason City Junior College. He was employed as an underwriter for Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance in Mason City.

On Aug. 5, 1939, he married Pauline Anne Brasser at Holy Family Catholic Church. With advent of World War II, Chan served in the U.S. Navy as a sonar technician with a destroyer escort from November 1942, through September 1946, in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

In 1949, Chan returned to the Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance company, which became Iowa Kemper Insurance. Chan was underwriting manager and was elected vice president of the company in 1955. He was on several national mutual insurance committees. Chan served as underwriting manager until his retirement in 1980. During these years he was also active as a member of the Elks and Kiwanis service groups.

Chan was an avid sailor since boyhood and raced his Y boat for years with the Clear Lake Yacht Club. Chan was Inland Lakes Yachting Assoc. Champion for his class in 1959 and also served as commodore for the club.

He pursued golf with a passion with his wife and friends after retiring, both in North Iowa, and during winters in Arizona. Chan has been a member of the Mason City Country Club since 1936.

Chan is survived by his wife of 73 years, Pauline; daughter, Nancy (Lynn) Rinehart of Newton, Iowa, and son, Thomas (Dr. Toni) Dakin of Kensett, Iowa, as well as four granddaughter and six great-grandchildren.

Chan was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Allin, and sisters, Shirley and Katherine (Kohler).

Dorothy L. Hesvik Faber, the daughter of Baard and Isobael (Ness) Hesvik, was born March 10, 1929, on the family farm in Swea City. Her family had settled in northwest Iowa after immigrating from Jonal, Norway in the early 1900s. Dorothy grew up on the farm, graduated from Swea City High School and attended Waldorf College and Drake University. While studying education at Waldorf College, she met Donald Faber. They were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City on Aug. 5, 1949.

Dorothy taught elementary school for over 30 years in area schools until retiring in 1989. An active member of her church and community, Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City, the local PEO, and many local organizations.

Survivors include her children, Kathryn (David) Van Driel, Dennis (Nancy) Faber, Cynthia (Thomas) Mallinger, and David (Donna) Faber; eight grandchildren, Cristin Van Driel, Timothy (Brooke) Faber, Thomas (Jennifer) Faber, Edward Faber, John (Kristin) Mallinger, Ann (Robert) Heeter, Samuel and Jacob Faber; three great-grandchildren, Braden, Logan and Kennidy Faber.

Erling E. Twedt
U.S. Air Force  Korean Conflict

LAKE MILLS - Erling E. Twedt, 83, of Lake Mills, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at The Wealshire Assisted Living in Bloomington, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Denise M. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, with military honors conducted by the Otto Chose Post No. 235.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Erling Emil Twedt was born on Aug. 21, 1929, in rural Walters, Faribault County, Minnesota, to parents Emil W. and Mildred (Husby) Twedt. He attended and graduated from Frost High School in Frost, Minn., with the class of 1947.

Erling attended school in Frost, Minn., and later joined the U.S. Air Force, towards the end of the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base, in Tampa, Fla. While there, he met Helen M. Twedt and they were married on March 1, 1952. Shortly after their wedding, they were sent to Tokyo, Japan where they remained until discharged. After completion of their military service, he brought Helen from southeast Tennessee to southern Minnesota, and Erling went into farming. In 1963, he signed a contract to begin his insurance career with Farm Bureau, where he was later named agency manager of both Winnebago and Worth counties offices. In 1969, he moved his family to Lake Mills, where he later opened an independent agency, Twedt Insurance and Real Estate. He continued in this business for the remainder of his career. He was a proud elected member of numerous boards and councils, which included both the Lake Mills School Board, and the Lake Mills City Council.

Erling was an avid hunter, loved to fish, and considered himself to be quite a gardener. He fussed over his gardens of melons, pumpkins, gourds and vegetables, always growing enough to share with many friends and neighbors. His family's pantry always was filled with the summer's harvest.

Memories of him are shared by three sons, Joel (Carol) Twedt of Lake Mills, Iowa, Edwin Twedt of Ames, Iowa, and James (Penny) Twedt of Urbandale, Iowa. His five grandchildren are Lesley (Ben) Setterlund, Matthew (Paula) Twedt, Emily Twedt, Betsy Twedt, and Katie Twedt; one sister, Maxine Olson of Blue Earth, Minn. and one brother, Marion Twedt of Frost, Minn.

Erling is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, beloved daughter Karen, parents, and sister Edna Anderson.
