Erling E. Twedt
U.S. Air Force Korean Conflict
LAKE
MILLS - Erling E. Twedt, 83, of Lake
Mills, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at
The Wealshire Assisted Living in
Bloomington, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, at Salem
Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with
Pastor Denise M. Anderson officiating.
Burial will be in Salem Memorial
Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, with
military honors conducted by the Otto
Chose Post No. 235.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 6,
2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mittelstadt
Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in
Lake Mills, and will continue one hour
prior to services at the church on
Friday.
Erling Emil Twedt was born on Aug. 21,
1929, in rural Walters, Faribault
County, Minnesota, to parents Emil W.
and Mildred (Husby) Twedt. He attended
and graduated from Frost High School in
Frost, Minn., with the class of 1947.
Erling attended school in Frost, Minn.,
and later joined the U.S. Air Force,
towards the end of the Korean Conflict,
where he was stationed at MacDill Air
Force Base, in Tampa, Fla. While there,
he met Helen M. Twedt and they were
married on March 1, 1952. Shortly after
their wedding, they were sent to Tokyo,
Japan where they remained until
discharged. After completion of their
military service, he brought Helen from
southeast Tennessee to southern
Minnesota, and Erling went into farming.
In 1963, he signed a contract to begin
his insurance career with Farm Bureau,
where he was later named agency manager
of both Winnebago and Worth counties
offices. In 1969, he moved his family to
Lake Mills, where he later opened an
independent agency, Twedt Insurance and
Real Estate. He continued in this
business for the remainder of his
career. He was a proud elected member of
numerous boards and councils, which
included both the Lake Mills School
Board, and the Lake Mills City Council.
Erling was an avid hunter, loved to
fish, and considered himself to be quite
a gardener. He fussed over his gardens
of melons, pumpkins, gourds and
vegetables, always growing enough to
share with many friends and neighbors.
His family's pantry always was filled
with the summer's harvest.
Memories of him are shared by three
sons, Joel (Carol) Twedt of Lake Mills,
Iowa, Edwin Twedt of Ames, Iowa, and
James (Penny) Twedt of Urbandale, Iowa.
His five grandchildren are Lesley (Ben)
Setterlund, Matthew (Paula) Twedt, Emily
Twedt, Betsy Twedt, and Katie Twedt; one
sister, Maxine Olson of Blue Earth,
Minn. and one brother, Marion Twedt of
Frost, Minn.
Erling is preceded in death by his wife,
Helen, beloved daughter Karen, parents,
and sister Edna Anderson.
