In 1945, she married George J. Ellis and lived on his farm north of Greene. To this marriage was born a daughter Mildred. In February of 1948, they got word that they would be getting electricity. After moving back to the farm, she enjoyed farming, raising ducks, geese, chickens and lambs.

She planted trees, shrubs, and perennial flower, each year planting something and trying to see what would grow. She planted black walnut, pecans, and peach trees from seed. She also planted mammoth and native hickory nut, butternut, sugar maple, and black oak trees, fruits; apples, plum, grapes, raspberries, gooseberries and currants, She always had a large garden and did a lot of canning and baking. She always said that you needed to plant two trees for every one that is taken down.

She was married to George Menken for more then 20 years. He died in 1988.
She took care of her mother Wilhelmina Poppe for several years. They enjoyed making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She enjoyed walking with the exercise group at the high school.

In 2005, she moved to Cedar Vale Assisted living in Nashua (that was built on the land that her mother lived on for many years) because of declining health. In 2011, she moved to Liebe Care Center.

Robert W. (Bob/Pete) Peterson
U.S. Navy  WWII

Hopkins, Minn. - Robert W. (Bob/Pete) Peterson, 91, formerly of Mason City, died peacefully surrounded by family at the J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice Center, Brooklyn Park, Minn., on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012.

A memorial service for Bob will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 14, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Sister Joy Peterson celebrating. Burial will take place at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11 to 1pm, Friday, Dec. 14, at the funeral home.

Bob was born on April 1, 1921, in Callender, the first son of Henry and Alfhild (Brueland) Peterson. He graduated from Callender High School and then Estherville Junior College. World War II interrupted his education and he enlisted in the Navy where he earned the rank of Lt. junior grade. The Navy fostered and refined his love of flying and he spent the war years as a pilot, stationed along the Eastern Coast of the U.S. His posting to the U.S. allowed him to marry his first love Dorothy Kennedy on Oct. 16, 1943, and settle into a life together. After his discharge Bob was able to return to his studies by attending Iowa State University where he earned a degree in agronomy.

Bob's love of farming and his education equipped him to spend his career years both as a farmer and as a support to farmers. He taught vocational agriculture and worked for the Farm Bureau until opportunity allowed him to become a fulltime farmer. After several years of working the land and then being employed at the Farmers Home Administration, he was offered a job as the farm loan manager at United Home Bank in Mason City. Serving in this position for almost 20 years, he came to know many farm families throughout the area. When an invitation came to extend his expertise to Worth County, he first directed the bank in Hanlontown and then in Manly, until he retired in 1984.

While his professional life was important to Bob, his family was the central focus of his love and care. He and Dorothy became parents to four children: Joy, Linda, Bill and Mark. The family suffered the loss of Dorothy in 1982 and Bob's skills as a nurturing parent deepened as he cared for his family. In the fall of 1983, Bob married Mary Petersen and she was a loving companion to him and mother to his children until her death in 1997.

Bob will be greatly missed by his children Sister Joy Peterson of Dubuque; Linda and Lee Todd of Minneapolis; Bill and Mary Peterson of Norwalk, and Mark and Beth Peterson of Dassel, Minn. His grandchildren Peter (Marie) Todd, Adam (Laura) Todd, Shawn Peterson, Rob (Katie) Peterson, Casey (girl-friend Becky Gaunt), Katie Peterson, Luke Peterson, William Peterson, Henry Peterson, and Kennedy Peterson all knew Grandpa as companion, gentle guide and generous benefactor. His great-grandchildren Maya and Sadie Todd, Ellie, Grace and Sophie Peterson, Grayson and Harper Todd loved interacting with Grandpa (Pampa) Bob. Along with their parents and grandparents, they will miss his physical presence in their lives.

He is also survived by his brother Dick and sister-in-law Beverly Peterson and sister-in-law Phyllis Peterson of Callender, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Charles.

Bob received such excellent care in his last days at the hospice center. The family suggests donations to a local hospice might be made in his memory. As the parent of four graduates of the Newman Catholic School System, Bob helped out for many years at school events and as a founding member of the Newman Foundation Board. Donations in his honor to Newman Schools would also be appreciated.
