Lavonn L. Johnston

CITY - Lavonn Lorraine (Bonnie) Johnston, 86, of Waukee (a lifelong
resident of Mason City) died Wednesday (June 23, 2010) at home.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 28, at Our
Savior's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City. Inurnment
will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Lavonn Anderson was born on Oct. 18, 1923, in Mason City. Lavonn could
do most anything she put her mind to from being a welder in the
shipyards during World War II to doing laundry for local motels. Lavonn
also worked alongside her husband Kenneth to establish Ken's TV for more
than 30 years. She retired in June 2001.
Lavonn went to live with her daughter in Waukee last year when she began
to feel unsafe on her own. Lavonn enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting
and many other crafts. Her love went into everything she made. She would
always say "If you're going to do something, it takes as long to do it
right as it does to do it wrong!"
Lavonn is survived by her son, Keith (Becky) Johnston; daughter, Debra
(Ray) Quayle, of Mason City, and her daughter LeAnn (Dan) Berger, of
Waukee; grandchildren, Dennis Shannon, Angie Madagan and Joseph Shannon,
Charlie Spear, Ryan and Chris Pennington, Shawn, Michael and Keri
Johnston; great-grandchildren, Max, Alex, Kaleigh, Ashleigh, Ben, Baby
Shannon, Jace, Maddie, Jack, Lydia, Mia, Lydia, BJ, Dalton, Cody, Aunna,
Reagan, Evan, Lexie, Rebeka, Xander and Akiva. Also surviving Lavonn are
her three sisters, Doris Price, Karen Bernhardt and Marilyn Kittleson.
Preceding her in death were her husband Kenneth Johnston, her daughter
Joyce (Johnston) Stevens; and her parents, John and Mable Anderson.

CITY - Kathleen A. Lockwood, 76, of 304 Third St. N.E. Apt. 306, Mason
City, died on Thursday (June 24, 2010) at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa in Mason City.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday (June 28, 2010) at
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with
the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling officiating. Inurnment will follow
Kathleen's service at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday (June 27, 2010) at
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel; according to Kathleen's wishes,
cremation will take place following the visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kathleen A. Lockwood Memorial
Fund.
Kathleen A. Currier was born on July 1, 1933, in Mason City to Fred and
Ida (Kolv) Currier. She attended and graduated high school from Holy
Family Catholic High School. Following her graduation she attended the
Gale Institute in Minneapolis, Minn., and then moved to Chicago to work
for the railroad.
On April 16, 1955, she was united in marriage to Ralph Lockwood at Holy
Family Catholic Church in Mason City and to this union six children were
born.
Kathleen enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and was known for her
home-made pie crusts; her family regarded her as an excellent cook! She
loved being a stay at home mom and raising her family.
As a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Kathleen was a very
religious woman.
Those grateful in sharing in her life are her husband, Ralph, of Mason
City; her children, Robert and Leann Lockwood and their children, Chris
Lockwood, Ben and Jen Lockwood and their daughter, Nyah, Tony Lockwood
and Chad Lockwood, of Mason City, Linda O'Connor and her daughter, Kari,
of Maple Grove, Minn., Steven and Sue Lockwood and their daughter Erin,
of Woodruff, S.C., Vince Lockwood, of Mason City, James Lockwood, of
Mason City, and Lisa and Ron Vandeweerd and their children Brittany, Tre
and Noah, of Mason City; one great-granddaughter; siblings, Mary Ellen
Hanson, of Mason City, Florence Kudej, Madrid, Marge and Roger Curtis,
of Mason City and Owen and Brenda Currier, of Mason City.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Father Tom Currier;

Margaret Meyer
LATIMER
- Margaret Meyer, 93, of Latimer died Tuesday (June 22, 2010) at the
Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.
Memorial services for Margaret Meyer will be held at 1:30 p.m. today,
Saturday, June 26, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 204 E. South St.
in Latimer, with Pastor Arthur Zewert officiating. Committal of remains
will be in the Marion Center cemetery north of Latimer.
Family will greet friends from 11 a.m. until time of services today at
the church.
Margaret Wilma Caroline, the eldest child of William and Anna Willig
Bessman, was born April 19, 1917, near Buckeye in Hardin County. She
grew up in that area where she attended school.
Margaret was united in marriage to Ervin Meyer on Dec. 12, 1940, in
Alden.
The couple made their home on the family farm seven miles north of
Latimer, where Ervin and Margaret farmed and raised their family. In
preparation for retiring from farming, Margaret and Ervin moved into
Latimer in 1983.
Margaret entered the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in 2005.
Margaret is warmly remembered for her love of crochet, needle-work,
embroidery, crafts and ceramics. Her family remembers Margaret for
cooking and baking, especially the sweets. Margaret enjoyed gardening,
both flowers and vegetables, and then canning the crop. Margaret shared
love and friendship by playing games, cards and dominos, with family and
friends.
Margaret was an active member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in
Latimer where she served faithfully in women's fellowship. She was an
active participant of CAL Over 60s Club in Latimer.
Margaret is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Ervin; children,
Lawrence and wife, Janet, of Alexander, and Marianne Armento of
Springfield, Ill.; four grandchildren, Tamara Mennenga, Rhonda Meyer,
Susan Grett and husband, Peter, and Courtney Armento-Irvin; seven
great-grandchildren, Ray, A.J., Cole, Brandon, Taylor, Kellsi and
Tristan.
She is preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Paul Armento III; a
brother, Harry Bessman ;and a sister, Ida Bock.

Milton Herman Brandau Jr., was born in Osage on Oct. 30, 1931, to Milton
and Myrtle (Naig) Brandau. Milt worked at Midland Linotype School as an
instructor for 10 years. He was a United States postal worker for over
20 years and a United States Air Force veteran, having served during the
Korean conflict.
Milt was an outgoing, charismatic and hard working family man and
friend. Milton was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and
the American Legion. He loved gardening, good food, keeping up with the
news and weather, playing cards, talking with friends, and especially
spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by Maureen Brandau of Charles City, his wife of 54 years;
four daughters, Kim (Brad) Frantzen of Kansas City, Kelly Brandau of
Sacramento, Calif., Tracy (Kevin) Green of Houston, Texas, and Ann
(Carlos) Brandau-Murguia of Kansas City; his son, Tony, of Charles City;
his eight grandchildren; and his sister, Jean Meyer, of Charles City.
His warmth and wisdom is cherished by many people whose lives he
touched. He is loved and will be deeply missed.

Charles J. Hoffman was born on Aug. 31, 1948 in New Hampton, the son of
Henry and Evelyn (Flick) Hoffman. He graduated from New Hampton
Community High School, Class of 1966.
Following high school Charlie honorably and faithfully served his
country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict and was awarded the
National Defense Service Medal.
He was united in marriage to Patsy C. Kloster on Dec. 23, 1972, at St.
Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. The couple have resided in Charles
City for 32 years.
Charlie was employed for various factory and foundry companies
throughout the area, the Nashua Creamery, White Farm Equipment, Plumbs
Building in New Hampton, Woodharbor in Mason City, Winnebago Industries
and Progress Casting.
Charlie's interests and leisure activities included camping and enjoying
the outdoors and his dogs, Lily and Molly. He will be best remembered
for taking pride in and being a very hard worker, having a great love
for teasing people, making them laugh and putting a smile on their face.
Charlie was always the first person there if you needed a hand with
something. He liked eating out and grilling out. Most of all, he loved
spending time with his family and friends. Charlie will be dearly missed
and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Charlie's life are
his wife of over 37 years, Patsy Hoffman, of Charles City; his two
children, Steven Hoffman of New York, N.Y., and Jennifer (Roy) Foster of
Charles City; his granddaughter, Karly Foster, of Charles City; two
sisters, Darlene (Charlie) Carey of Ionia, and Lois (David) Weipert of
Osage. He is also survived by his aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and
friends.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents;
brother-in-law, Bob Kloster; nephew, Shad Kloster; niece, Amanda Kloster;
and several aunts and uncles.

CITY -Thora Clauson, 96, of Webster City, formerly of Forest City, died
Saturday (June 26, 2010) at the Southfield Wellness Community.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, at the
First Baptist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Jon Rollefson,
officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.
Thora Rebecca Thompson, daughter of Harry and Bertina Peterson Thompson,
was born on April 25, 1914, in Forest City.
She received her education from the Forest City school system.
She received her two- year teacher's certificate from Waldorf College in
Forest City. She taught for five years at a rural country school in the
Forest City area.
On June 8, 1938, she married Donald Clauson in Waterloo. The couple made
their home in Forest City where they owned and operated Don's Food
Market in downtown Forest City. She retired in 1989. Mr. Clauson died in
2004.
In August of 2006, she moved to Southfield Wellness Community in Webster
City.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Donelle and James Mackey,
of Winchester, Ill.; Carolee and Ron Woodard, of Webster City; Jodi and
Elmer Wilde, of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, John Clauson, of Berlin, Wis.;
brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Elnora Thompson, of Forest City;
Richard and Darlene Thompson, of Crystal Lake; sister, Elaine Vergeron,
of Riverside, Calif.; and 13 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and
a brother, Orville Thompson.

She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and Royal
Neighbors. Her interests included sewing, participating at church,
volunteering at nursing homes and spending time with her grandchildren.
Living family members include her four children, Ellen Paulus, of
Littleton, Colo., Liz Brooks, of Charles City, Linda (Mike) Carroll, of
Marion and Joe (Julie) Eggena, of Greene; 13 grandchildren, 11
great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

CITY -Linda Kay Quinones 65, of 922 S. President Ave., died Sunday (June
27, 2010) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
A memorial service for Linda will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 30,
2010, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.,
Mason City, with Pastor Paul Martin, officiating. Inurnment will be held
at a later date in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
In honor of Linda the family has requested casual attire.

Linda Kay Ulrich was born on July 8, 1944, in Mason City, the daughter
of Lloyd and Florence (Dickinson) Ulrich. She graduated from Mason City
High School. After graduation, Linda worked for Lyons Laundry for
several years.
Linda was united in marriage to John Quinones on May 15, 1971, at the
United Presbyterian Church, Garner. They were blessed with three
children.
Linda's greatest love was spending time with her children and
grandchildren. She enjoyed socializing with her friends at the V.F.W.,
playing bingo and going to the casino! Linda was a V.F.W. Auxiliary
Member.
Linda is survived by her husband John, her two sons, Randy, of Mason
City, and Tracy of Des Moines, her daughter Michelle (Roger), of Mason
City; grandchildren, Amanda, Elsie, Lindsay, and Elijah;
great-grandchildren, Hayden and Leigha; siblings, Merlyn (Geneva)
Ulrich, of Mason City, Ron Ulrich, of Mason City, Beverly Gates, of
North Carolina, Roberta (Don) Meyer, of Mason City; best friends, Nancy,
of Stockton, Calif., and Peggy Smith, of Mason City; the Quinones
Family, including several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Linda is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Richard Ulrich; and
sister Sharlyene Baird; and her best friend, Sedonna McFarland.

Walter Lane Sterrenberg
BURNSVILLE, Minn. -
Walter Sterrenberg, 81, of Burnsville, Minn. died Sunday (June 27, 2010)
at home.
Walter was born on July 16, 1928 in Winnebago County, Iowa. His parents
were William and Mildred (Hodson) Sterrenberg. He married Arlene
Peterson in August of 1948 and they had four children.
He is survived by two daughters, Wanda (Arnold) Engelby, of Forest City,
Julie Helgeson, of Burnsville, Minn., and two sons, Allen Sterrenberg,
of Joice, and Jon Sterrenberg, of Forest City; one brother, Richard
Sterrenberg, of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters and two brothers.
Walter lived and farmed in the Thompson area until the early 1970s, at
which time he and Arlene moved to Lake Mills and started a construction
business.
Walter moved to Harlingen, Texas, after the death of Arlene and had
resided there until February of this year.
He always had a smile for everyone and a helping hand and he will be
greatly missed by all those who loved him.
A private memorial service will be held at Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake
Mills.

Mary Virginia Burroughs
GREENE
- Funeral services for 92-year-old Mary V. Burroughs will be 1:30 p.m.,
Thursday, July 1, at First Presbyterian Church, Greene, with Pastor John
Hanna officiating.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel,
519 N. First St., Greene. There will be a public Scripture service at 7
p.m. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Visitation will
continue one hour before services on Thursday at the church.
Mary Virginia Pooley was born June 12, 1918, in Greene, a daughter of
Roy John and Nelle M. (Stickney) Pooley, and passed away Monday (June
28, 2010) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after
a bout of pneumonia.
She lived in Greene most of her life, graduating as valedictorian of
Greene High School Class of 1935. She attended Coe College, Cedar
Rapids, and graduated magna cum laude in 1939, with a major in
mathematics and minors in history and English. She taught junior high
school in Carpenter for a year.
She was united in marriage to Clifford Earl Burroughs on June 29, 1940.
They were high school sweethearts and were married almost 59 years until
his death on June 11, 1999.
She was a life long member of First Presbyterian Church in Greene;
having received full membership into the church on April 12, 1925, and
was the oldest living member of the congregation.
Mary's interests were many. She and Cliff traveled all over the U.S.,
including Alaska and Hawaii. They had been to Canada and Europe together
and she visited England, Scotland and Wales on a second trip with Vicki.
She and Cliff were bird watchers and had a bird feeder in their backyard
that they enjoyed. She loved music; listening, singing or playing the
piano. She accompanied church services for 25 years and also accompanied
many high school students in contest solos. She taught piano for many
years in Greene. She was a den mother in Cub Scouts for her six boys.
She liked playing bridge, knitting, crocheting, reading and crossword
puzzles. Mary was a sports fan; she watched Iowa football and basketball
and the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins baseball games. She was a
member of AAUW, the Greene Library Board, the PEO Sisterhood (for 70
years), Presbyterian Women, Bible study group and First Presbyterian
Church of Greene. She did substitute teaching for the Greene and Allison
school systems.
But her greatest love was her family. She loved visits, phone calls,
cards and pictures from her children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Her family will sorely miss her.
Mary was the mother of eight children, Vicki (Robert) Bixler of Hawthorn
Woods, Ill., Craig E. (Sandra) Burroughs of Chicago, Ill., Capt. Paul N.
(Jill) Burroughs, USAF, Kent D. Burroughs of Greene, Linda (Douglas)
Rabbitt of Charles City, LCDR Bruce (Wendy) Burroughs, USN (Ret.), both
of Greene, Neil W. (Debra) Burroughs of Aurora, Colo., and Brian J.
(Tammie) Burroughs of Lenoir City, Tenn. Their son Paul died in an
airplane crash Aug. 18, 1974. Mary is survived by 16 grandchildren: Roy

Ill., Maren E. (Derek) Grieff, Prairieville, La., Lara N. (Mark)

CITY - Franklin Kicherer, 94, of Charles City died Wednesday (June 16,
2010) at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Franklin was born on March 1, 1916, in Charles City, the son of Joseph
L. and Augusta F. (Hanneman) Kicherer. He attended Charles City High
School, and soon after graduation he began working for Oliver Tractor.
He eventually became foreman of the heat treater department, then the
gear department, and finally as an inspector. He retired in 1975 after
40 years of service.
Franklin was united in marriage to Jeanne Adalaide Follansbee at St.
John Evangelical Lutheran Church on June 23, 1937.
Franklin was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church,
as well as a member of the BPO Elks No. 418 and the UAW No. 1315.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved going on the annual family
fishing trip to Minnesota. He also liked to read and especially enjoyed
searching through his family history. Franklin also enjoyed talking to
his neighbors, or anyone else that would listen, and he looked forward
to his 5 p.m. phone call every night from Robert in Florida.
Franklin was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jeanne, on
Sept. 3, 2008.
Those left to honor his memory include his son, David (Rita) Kicherer,
of St. Ansgar; grandchildren, Misti (Jon) Peppler, Michele Kicherer and
Daniel Kicherer; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marilyn
Butler; and his special friend, Robert Rabe.

Grace Pals
BELMOND
- Grace (Koenen) Pals, 97, of Belmond passed away Saturday (June 26,
2010) at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Funeral services for Grace Pals will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday,
July 1, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with Pastor Philip
Arnold officiating. Burial will take place in the Meservey cemetery.
Visitation for Grace Pals will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dugger
Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond, and will continue one hour
prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Grace was the oldest of six children born to Jake K. and Minnie (Meints)
Koenen on Dec. 27, 1912.
On Feb. 26, 1935, Grace was united in marriage to Bert Henry Pals at the
First Reformed Church parsonage in Meservey. The Rev. Kampman performed
the ceremony. Following their marriage the couple made their home and
raised their family, farming most of the years on the family farm where
Bert was born in Wisner Township.
They retired in 1975 and in 1986 they moved into Meservey. Following a
house fire they moved to Belmond in July 2000. Grace became a resident
of the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond in July 2009. Grace was a
faithful member of First Reformed Church in Meservey.
Grace enjoyed being independent and taking care of her home and her
yard. She was a hard working farmer's wife and always had a garden and
did lots of canning. She enjoyed baking sweet treats, especially pies.
She loved mowing the yard with her John Deere lawn mower. The joy of her
life was spending time with her family, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed watching game shows on TV, playing bingo and looked forward
to her daily visits on the phone with her brother, Jake, and his wife.
Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Delbert and wife, Vivian,
and Jerry and wife, Judy, all of Meservey; one daughter, Audrey VanHorn
and her husband, Vernon, of Latimer; seven grandchildren, Joleyne (Bill)
Bell, Jody (Luther) Lehman, Joann (Dan) Oberhelman, Robert (Barb)
VanHorn, Darwin (Koreen) VanHorn, Justin (Jen) VanHorn, and Rick (Kim)
Johnson; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren;
brother, Jake Koenen and wife, Mavis, of Meservey; brother-in-law, Jesse
Suntken, of Belmond; sister-in-law, Ruth Pals, of Belmond; and several
other nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bert in 2002; two
infant sons, Eugene Edward in 1944 and Lynn Ray in 1951; grandson, Alan

Marvin Peterson
KENSETT
- Marvin Peterson, 64, of Kensett died on Sunday (June 27, 2010).
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 1, at Bethany
Lutheran Church in Kensett with the Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt
officiating. Burial will be in Kensett Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood, and continue one hour prior to
services at the church.
Marvin was born on June 24, 1946, to Roy and Gail (Brunsvold) Peterson
of Hanlontown. He attended Hanlontown and Northwood schools. Marvin
served in the Army, was stationed in Korea, and discharged in December
1967.
He married JoAnn Polsdofer on Aug. 1, 1970, in Mason City. They had two
children, Mike and Kathy.
Marvin worked for his brother-in-law, Arden Bergan, before starting his
own excavating business in 1968. He continued to expand his business and
worked until the time of his death. Marvin was a member of the Kensett
Fire Department for over 40 years, serving as fire chief for 15 years.
Marvin was a Ford man at heart. He enjoyed model trains, woodworking,
metal fabrication and their trips to Branson, Mo. He enjoyed spending
time with good friends, going out to eat with JoAnn, and watching his
grandsons' school activities.
His greatest enjoyment was spending time with all the grandsons at the
cabin, especially with a fishing pole in his hand. Marvin was a
wonderful husband and father and a terrific grandpa.
Marvin is survived by his wife JoAnn; his son, Mike (Julie) Peterson, of
Kensett; his daughter Kathy (Tony) Buhr, of Mason City; grandsons,
Justin Peterson, Aaron Peterson, Adam Buhr, Isaac Buhr and Ryan Buhr;
sisters, Murial Bergan of Hanlontown, Marian (Roger) Jennings of
Fertile; mother-in-law, Phyllis Polsdofer, of Mason City; and many
nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, Chuck Polsdofer,
brothers-in-law, Arden Bergan and John Polsdofer.
