Freada E. Daly
CLEAR LAKE - A memorial service will be held for Freada E. Daly at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning, June 4, at Clear Lake Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 West, Clear Lake. Lunch will be served.

Freada Elizabeth Daly died Tuesday morning (June 1, 2010) at her residence in Sturgis, S.D. She was born Freada Edwards on Jan. 5, 1923, in Miles, Texas, to Thomas and Beulah (Henson) Edwards. The fifth of six children, Freada was preceded in death by her three brothers, John, Claude and Maurice, and her two sisters, Fanny Lee and Hazel.

She is survived by her two sons, Michael and Patrick and their eight children.
Freada married William H. Daly of Clear Lake, Iowa, on June 24, 1943, in the Catholic Church in Ballinger, Texas. William was on contract to the Army Air Corps to teach combat flying to World War II cadet trainees. Freada was a parachute packer when she met and married the dashing young adventurer and remained with him until his passing on July 31, 1975.

Freada and Bill had two children, Michael, born June 17, 1944, and Patrick, born June 15, 1947. Michael married Mary F. O'Keefe, his family has supplied five grandchildren for Freada's enjoyment, Jon Pat, Christopher, Ruth, Rebecca and Briege. Of these grandchildren, Jon Pat's marriage to Marie Sale has delivered four great-grandchildren, Brendan, Patrick, Meghan and Peter, to the fold. Christopher's marriage to Lisa Guertin resulted in a son, Michael. Rebecca's marriage to Greg Pfunstein brought forth Marguerite. Patrick's first marriage to Carolyn Flood brought three more Daly grandchildren to Freada's joyous circle, Amy, Katherine and Beth Ann. Amy, married to Steve Oliver, supplied two great-grandchildren to the expanding band, Christian and Rachel. Beth married Heath Whitney and they have children Abram and Whitney completing the collection - to date.

After Carolyn's death, Patrick remarried Barbara Collins of Riverton, Wyo., bringing three stepgrandchildren, Faye, Natalie and Courtland into the family, together with Faye's children, Emmet and Trenton.

Many residents of Clear Lake know Freada well from her active participation in Clear Lake's Christian Church. As a one-time member of the choir and a full-time member of Bible study and church supper cooking staff, Freada has warmed the hearts and stomachs of many worshipers. Her civic service has also included Meals on Wheels, work in the Community Kitchen and volunteer work at Handicap Village.

As a principal in the Mother's Study Club, begun in 1947, Freada formed friendships who continued to meet right up to 2007. Although most of her life was spent maintaining a home and caring for a country household and garden, Freada also worked in the school hot lunch program, the local A&P grocery and Graham's department store. Most of her out-of-home work was taken up during the periods when Bill was recovering from TB at the state sanitarium in Oakdale, Iowa.

Freada enjoyed sewing, knitting and gardening. A tireless and organized worker, she harvested, cooked, canned and froze enough to keep a wide circle of friends and family in touch with the wonderful flavor of simple foods, competently raised and simply cooked. She will be missed wherever she was known.
