Helen I. Dahlby

LAKE MILLS - Helen I. Dahlby, age 91, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (June 5, 2010) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will take place at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, rural Joice.

Visitation for Helen will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Youth for Christ-The Bridge in Lake Mills, or to Hospice of North Iowa.

Helen Irene (Stephenson) Dahlby was born in Page County, to parents John and Irene (McClellan) Stephenson. She attended and graduated from Shenandoah High School, following which she moved to Mason City, and attended Hamilton Business College.

On March 2, 1941, Helen was united in marriage with Duayne Dahlby at Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Joice. The couple farmed southeast of Joice until 1967 when they moved into Lake Mills. Together, they wintered in McAllen, Texas, for a number of years. She and Duayne loved to dance. Helen loved taking care of her family, her home, and her flowers. She spent free time gardening, camping, and enjoying birds.

Survivors include her six children, Karen (Philip) Ridout of Huntington Beach, Calif., Stephen (Sally) Dahlby of Rochester, Minn., John (Barbara) Dahlby of Waverly, David (Deborah) Dahlby of Bettendorf, Stanley (Paulette) Dahlby of Overland Park, Kan., and Gordon (Mary) Dahlby of Urbandale. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Michael Ridout, Bradley (Heather) Ridout, Danielle (Ryan) McCulloch, Alexandra (Michael) Gregory, Laura (Christopher) Nicolai, Paul Dahlby, Jeffrey (Deb) Dahlby, Sarah (Ryan) Dahlby Albright, Erin Dahlby, Timothy Dahlby, Ryan (Jessi Richter) Dahlby, Emily Dahlby, James (Heather) Dahlby, Julie (Greg) Hunt, Keith (Samantha) Dahlby, and Nancy Dahlby; 15 great-grandchildren, Hannah, Brooke, Tate, Allison, Andrew, Julia, Anna, Nathan, Erika, Corinne, Gabrielle, John, William, Megan, and Kate; and a brother, Charles (Sue) Stephenson of The Woodlands, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duayne in 1985; two sisters, Dorothy Lovitt and Inez Havick; and a brother, Joe Stephenson.

Donald E. Hanson

FOREST CITY - Donald E. Hanson, age 69, of Forest City, died Thursday (June 3, 2010) at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City (following a heart transplant).

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 7, at West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leland with Pastor Timothy Miller officiating. Burial at Norway Township in rural Kanawha will follow a luncheon at the church.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, June 6, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and one hour prior to service at the church.
 
Donald E. Hanson was born in Fort Dodge on March 15, 1941, to Roy E. and Bertha (Amosson) Hanson. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1959. Don began his career with the Iowa State Department of Transportation in Clarion in 1959. Don married Shirley Tripp on June 18, 1961, at Belmond.

They were blessed with three children. In 1978, Donald was promoted and the family moved to Forest City. Don finished his career after 37 years in Mount Ayr, and came back to Forest City where he retired.

Don was active in West Prairie Lutheran Church by serving on various church boards and was church council president. Don loved to fish and spent many years fishing in Minnesota and Canada and enjoyed salmon fishing in Wisconsin. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, and socializing with friends over coffee.

Don is survived by Shirley, his wife of 48 years; his children, Kathy and husband Kevin Triggs of Mount Ayr, Kristine and husband Jerome Christianson of Hartley, James and wife Denise Hanson of Brooklyn; four grandchildren, Johnathan and Tyler Triggs, Colton Christianson, Erica Lynn Orrell; his brother Roy and wife Diane Hanson of Fort Dodge; sister Linda Hanson of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents.

Buena Hearity

MASON CITY - Buena Hearity, 95, of Mason City, died Thursday (June 3, 2010) at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday June 9, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City. The Rev. Michael Schuler will officiate.

Buena was born on Nov. 20, 1914, in Wesley, the daughter of Ray and Pearl (Casler) Niewald. She graduated from Wesley High School.

Buena moved to Mason City in 1932. She married Earl D. Hearity on June 2, 1944, in Jamica, N.Y.

Buena enjoyed working in her flower garden, cooking for her family and reading. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She is survived by her son Joseph M. (Julie) Hearity, Apple Valley, Minn.; grandson Brian M. Hearity, Mason City; sister Abbey (Dwayne) Niver, Mason City, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters Faye Murphy and Verna Dunn.

Evelyn Fern Jeffries

OSAGE - Evelyn Fern Jeffries, 94, of Davenport, died Thursday (June 3, 2010) at Crest Health Care, Ridgecrest Village, Davenport.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. She will be laid to rest in Osage, where a committal service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church or to Meal Service of Scott County.

Evelyn was born in 1916 in Osage. She attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, and began her professional career with the Ottumwa Gas Company in Ottumwa. Later, when the Ottumwa Gas Company became part of Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company, Evelyn moved to the Quad Cities. Evelyn retired from Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company in 1981 after 42 years of service. Evelyn was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport, where she sang in the choir for many years.

Darvin H. Kettwick

Buffalo Center - Darvin H. Kettwick, age 54, of Buffalo Center, passed away on Thursday (June 3, 2010) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday June 8, at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with the Rev. Bill Peake officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Monday, June 7, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center.

Darvin Harold Kettwick, son of Harold and Deloris (Dontje) Kettwick, was born in Buffalo Center on August 27, 1955. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. Darv graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1973. He attended Iowa State University and then went on to work at Kleinwort's Hog Farm prior to farming for 28 years with his dad, brother Mike, and cousin Bryan Wessels until his death.

On August 30, 1997, Darvin was united in marriage to Robin (Kramme) Howell, daughter of Edward and Jody Kramme of Osage, at the First Reformed Church. Chris and Abby, Robin's children, were a major part of this newly formed family.

Darv was actively involved with things that were important to him. He was a member of the First Reformed Church and served on the consistory as an elder and deacon. He was also a choir member and Sunday School teacher.

The Winnebago County Fair was a special tradition. He was a long-time fair board member, beef barn superintendent, and served eight years as president. Darvin was a lifetime alumni member of the Bison FFA. Judging crop shows, proficiency awards, and speaking contests at the local to state levels gave him a great deal of joy and satisfaction. As recently as May 18, he and Bryan tilled and planted the FFA plot.
 
Darv believed in being practical, comfortable, and close to home. He valued a quality work ethic, traditions, honest opinions, and the concept of "tough love" to help children be the best they could be.

Special moments in his young life included FFA livestock judging, crop shows, and awards including earning the Iowa Farmer Degree. He enjoyed showing livestock at the county and state levels and was proud of winning the Grand Champion Chester White Female in the open class competition at the Iowa State Fair. His selection for first-team all conference in football was valued. He enjoyed his collection of pigs and FFA semis. Playing slow-pitch softball, watching the Kentucky Derby, helping at Crazy Days, mixing batter at Pancake Day, and making the world's best caramel popcorn at Christmas were important to him.

Darvin died at the age of 54 surrounded by family on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Kossuth County Regional Health Center after a valiant battle with cancer. According to his wishes, his body was cremated with inurnment at Graceland Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Robin of Buffalo Center; children, Chris Howell of Clear Lake, Abby Howell of Mason City; mother Deloris Kettwick of Buffalo Center. Also mourning his loss are his sister and brothers, Madonna Kettwick of Waukon, Michael (Carole) Kettwick of Buffalo Center, Wayne (Tracy) Kettwick of DeWitt, and David (Renee) Kettwick of Clarinda. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, and the rest of Robin's family.

Darvin was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father Harold and his nephew Tyler.

Mildred L. Kruse

CHARLES CITY - Mildred L. Kruse, 99, of Charles City, died Saturday morning (June 5, 2010) at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funerals services for Mildred Kruse will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Gary Van Wert and Chaplain Sam Mack will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue an hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Mildred Louise Koehler was born on Nov. 29, 1910, at Rockford, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Heitz) Koehler. She graduated from Rockford High school in 1928. On May 30, 1935, she was united in marriage to Donavon H. Kruse at Charles City. Mildred was a teacher in rural schools in Ulster Township, assistant cashier in a bank, deputy county auditor and retired as a bookkeeper for the Iowa Terminal Railroad. She was volunteer treasurer for the Trinity United Methodist Church for over 50 years and has been treasurer for the Floyd County Historical Society for over 30 years. As a couple, Mildred and Don were named Man and Woman of the Year by the Charles City Chamber in 1989. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Colwell Culture Club, various organizations and the first woman to apply for a membership at the Elks Lodge No. 418. Her interests included gardening, flowers, cooking, birds and reading.

Living family members include her two daughters, Sharon (Al) Uetz and Nancy (Jerry) Joerger all of Charles City; four grandchildren, Julie (Kevin) Endelman, Jill Uetz, Curt (Kim) Joerger and Stephanie (Torie) Korth; eight great grandchildren, Levi Endelman, Maxwell and Austin Uetz, Megan and Justin Joerger, Chase Skarpness and Madison and Kennedy Korth; sister, Arlene (George) Trettin of Rockford; brother, Donald (Elizabeth) Koehler of Rockford; sister-in-law, Myra Koehler of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1992; two grandchildren, Stacie Lynn and Alan Uetz; two brothers, Lloyd and Dale Koehler; and a sister, Wilma Damgaard.

Elnora M. Paulson

CHARLES CITY - Elnora M. Paulson, 94, of Charles City, died Thursday (June 3, 2010) at Floyd County Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 7, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., in Charles City with the Rev. David Werges officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, June 6, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., in Charles City and again one hour prior to the service at the church.

Elnora was born on April 19, 1916, in Geneva, Minn., the daughter of Elmer and Ida (Carlson) Larson. She graduated from Aitkin High School in Minnesota and took courses at the University of Minnesota, Iowa State University and North Iowa Area Community College.

She was united in marriage to Ben Villnow on Oct. 20, 1935, in Hector, Minn. Ben died in 1959.

She was then united in marriage to George Paulson on July 15, 1961, in Plato, Minn. George died in 2006.

Elnora was the postmaster in Plato for several years before moving to Charles City, Iowa, where she worked at 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home as a dietary supervisor. She retired in 1981.

Elnora was very involved in the communities she lived in. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and active in the church circle. She was a life member of the Floyd County Museum, a thirty-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as district president for a year, chairman of Veteran's Affairs for eight years, and held several offices in the North Iowa Quilter's Guild. Elnora has been active in 4-H, both as a member and club leader. She served as the chairman for six years in the Minnesota Farm Bureau Women and on the Extension Board. She also volunteered with Meals-On-Wheels.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Robert (Kathy) Villnow; step-son, Raymond (Diann) Paulson; sister, Mardella Kuzek; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
Elnora was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ben and George; daughter, Corinne Schauer; son-in-law, Gerald Schauer; daughter-in-law, Anita Villnow; and brother, Alvin Larson.

Verneice Pedersen

SWALEDALE - Verneice Pedersen, 86, of Swaledale, died Saturday (June 5, 2010) at the Rockwell Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at the United Methodist Church, Swaledale, with the Rev. John Scherb officiating. Interment will be at the Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour preceding the service at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be given to the Verneice Pedersen Memorial Fund.

Verneice was born on March 19, 1924, in Swaledale, the daughter of Peter and Freda (Schonhorst) Fessler. She graduated from Swaledale High School and then attended Hamilton Business School.

She married John Pedersen Oct. 21, 1945 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.
She and her husband John opened Pedersen Implement, Swaledale, in 1956, where she was the bookkeeper until they retired in 1980.
Verneice enjoyed gardening, canning and especially cooking for the family get togethers.

She was a member of Swaledale United Methodist Church, where she also was a Sunday school teacher and M.Y.F. leader.

Verneice is survived by three children, Clifford Pedersen and his wife Gaye, Cresco, Janice McCleish and her husband Richard, Liberty, Mo., and Randy Pedersen and friend Jean Hilbert, Wesley; eight grandchildren: Jennie (David) Mills, Julie (Kevin) Carter, Lisa (Daryl) Sobolik, Angela (Scott) Linard, Matthew (Nicole) McCleish, Johnny (Jenny) Pedersen, Katie Pedersen and friend Troy Smeby, and Arthur (Molly) Pedersen; 13 great-grandchildren; sister Alma Spillman, Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

Verneice was preceded in death by her parents; husband John in 2009; two brothers, Lloyd and Harold Fessler and one sister Anne Barlow.

Mildred M. "Millie" Pigman

MASON CITY - Mildred M. "Millie" Pigman, 86, of 1714 Cerro Gordo Way, died Thursday (June 3, 2010) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Magelssen of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to Millie's service on Tuesday.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Mildred Pigman Memorial Fund.

Mildred Knutson was born on April 23, 1924, in Clear Lake to Jens and Bertha (Emma) Knutson. In September of 1942 she was united in marriage to Henry Pigman in Seattle, Wash.

Millie and Henry eventually moved to Clear Lake where they made their home for 50 years before moving to Mason City.

For many years Millie and Henry would enjoy their weekend trips up to Minneapolis, they also enjoyed their time spent together dining at various restaurants in Mason City.

Millie loved flowers, especially geraniums. She also liked bird watching and watching cooking shows on T.V.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Millie is survived by her siblings, Lee (Donna) Knutson, Mason City and Gladys (Wayne) McAfee, Alameda, Calif.; sister-in-law Dorothy (Al) Gossweiler, Mason City; and many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; and a brother, Carl Knutson.

Delores E. "Dee" Sawyer

Mason City - Delores Eudelle Sawyer, 90, of 186 Lakeview Drive, Mason City, died Saturday (June 5, 2010) at Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

There will be no services and interment will be at a later date at the Buckingham Cemetery, Traer.

Delores "Dee," was born Oct. 7, 1919, in Lake Wilson, Minn., the daughter of Axel and Nellie (Nelson) Bangston. At the age of 10, she moved with her family to Goldfield, Iowa. In high school, she won the Iowa State Typing Contest and also enjoyed playing the clarinet. Dee graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City and became a secretary/receptionist for KGLO radio where she met Roger Sawyer, a radio engineer.

Dee and Roger were married on March 31, 1940, at the home of her parents in Goldfield. They lived in Mason City and raised their three children. She will be remembered as a good mother and a wonderful cook. After her children were grown, she worked as a secretary at the First United Methodist Church and the Northwestern States Portland Cement Company.

In her retirement, she enjoyed golf, bridge and bowling, especially attending many national bowling tournaments. Dee was a member of First United Methodist Church, sewing club, book club, as well as several bridge clubs.
Roger and Dee enjoyed 59 years of married life before he passed away in 1999. A few years later she was re-united with a high school friend, Ken Baldus, who was living in Portland, Ore. He was also widowed and decided to move back to Iowa to be with Dee. He has been a wonderful companion and brought her much happiness in the remaining years of her life.

Dee is survived by her three children, Suzanne (Dr. Kent) Gulden of White Bear Lake, Minn., Tom (Joan) Sawyer of Clear Lake, and Kaye Steger of Mason City; her seven grandchildren, Dr. Wendy Gulden (Edward Vant), Christopher Gulden, Jeffrey Sawyer, Stephen (Tricia) Sawyer, Kerry Sawyer, Scott (Susie) Parks and Natalie (Jeff) Gebhard; her nine great-grandchildren, Esteban and Savannah Vant, Graham and Collin Sawyer, Courtney, Jack and Kaylee Parks, Sydney and Gretchen Gebhard; her nieces and nephews; and her devoted companion, Ken Baldus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; parents; brothers, Kenny Bangston, Wayne and Merrill Highland; sisters, Edna Highland and Olive Bangston Illg; and son in-law, Ken Steger.

Byron "Lefty" Hofmeister

CLARION - Byron "Lefty" Hofmeister, 83, of Clarion, died Saturday (June 5, 2010) at Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

A memorial service for Lefty Hofmeister will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at First Lutheran Church in Clarion with Pastors Bill Kem and Don Morrison officiating.

Private family burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

CHARLES CITY - Carl L. Stafford, 76, of Charles City, died Saturday evening, June 5, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Carl Stafford will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor David Werges of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Earl A. Ahrens

OSAGE - Earl A. Ahrens, 98, of Osage, died Monday (June 7, 2010) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, with The Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery rural Osage.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Earl was born on Jan. 26, 1912, in Osage, the son of Richard and Alma (Frese) Ahrens. He graduated from Osage High School.

In 1948, Earl built the Starlight Roller Rink in Osage, and operated it until the mid-1960s.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. Earl enjoyed roller skating, fishing and gardening.

Earl is survived by three nephews, Richard (Rosella) Krahn, of Osage; Gene (Katrina) Krahn of Mitchell; and Ronald (Suzanne) Krahn of Osage; one niece, Myrna Hoisington of Orchard; and 10 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Alda (Ahrens) Krahn; and an infant sister, Erna Marie Ahrens.

Frank E. Bonnstetter

CHAPIN, S.C. - The family of Frank E. Bonnstetter, 81, received friends at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church with visitation and Rosary.

Mass was held at noon Wednesday, June 2, 2010, with interment in Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date.

Frank was born on Aug. 13, 1928, in St. Paul, Minn., and was the son of the late Dr. Frank A. Bonnstetter and Celia E. Bonnstetter. He married Doris A. Lovick on Feb. 9, 1956 and she was his beloved wife for 54 years.
Prior to the marriage, Frank attended Creighton University in Omaha Neb., and enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. He was a proud veteran and member of the VFW and American Legion.

Frank worked for Northern Natural Gas for 29 years prior to retirement on Feb. 1, 1986.

Frank and Doris were members of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church.

Frank is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Mike and Mike's children, Kyle (Sara), Carrie and Taylor Bonnstetter, all of Omaha Neb.; daughter, Jo Fors (Jimmy) and their children, Angela of Charleston, Brianne and Jonathan Fors of Chapin and his brother, Bill Bonnstetter (Lynn) of St. Louis, Mo.

Donna R. Cordle

MASON CITY - Donna R. Cordle, 66, of 506 Shalom Towers II, died Wednesday (June 2, 2010) at her home.

Donna R. Simmons was born July 5, 1943, in Mason City, the daughter of Emory and Gretchen (Edwards) Simmons.
Donna attended Mason City school system and worked for Marshall and Swift and the IOOF Home.

She was united in marriage to Rick Cordle and to this union a daughter, Misty, was born.

Donna enjoyed collecting dolls, reading, studying her Bible and socializing. She was a very active member of the Kingdom Hall. She was a member of the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Misty Cordle, Garner; brothers, Stan (Dorothy) Simmons, Mason City, Bill Simmons, Mason City; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Wilmarth, Mason City, Kim (Rick) Carolus, Mason City, Polly (Shane) Emmert, Davenport, Tracy Classon and Clayton Simmons; along with several great-nieces and great-nephews and other relatives and friends.

CEDAR RAPIDS -Richard L. Halsor, 82, a longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Mason City, died on May 18, 2010.

Norman Jacob Hansen

HAMPTON - Norman Jacob Hansen, 92, of Hampton, passed away Monday (June 7, 2010) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1917, son of Jacob and Elna (Petersen) Hansen, in rural Latimer. Norman attended the Lutheran Christian Day School in Latimer. He was united in marriage to LaVonne Boyenga on June 27, 1941, in Bethany, Mo. After marriage, they moved to the home farmstead southwest of Hampton, where they resided until retiring to Hampton in 1978. They moved to Franklin Prairie Assisted Living in 2004.

Norman loved farming, loved his family, all their hugs and kisses, and was proud of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His children thought he was the best dad ever.

In his retirement years, he loved mowing the lawn, keeping his yard in top shape, putting puzzles together, and most of all, spending time with LaVonne. June 27 would have been their 69th anniversary. Norman has been a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church since 1955.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, LaVonne; children, Eileen Murray, of Marshalltown, Pat (Don) Voy, of Elma, Norma Jean (Virgil) Caruth, Hollister, Mo., and Larry (Renee) Hansen, of Hampton; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ary; and son-in-law Barry Murray.

Christina L. "Chris" Johnson

CHARLES CITY -Christina "Chris" L. Johnson, 61, of Charles City, died Sunday (June 6, 2010) at the University Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

A funeral Mass for Chris Johnson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with a vigil scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Christina Louise Emerson Johnson was born on July 24, 1948, at Rockford, Ill., the daughter of John and Venette (Stevens) Emerson. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1966.

On Nov. 26, 1966, she was united in marriage to Gene Johnson at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Over the years, Chris worked as a floral designer at Cedar Valley Florist, Bluhm's Florist, Pick-A-Posy and Kelly Mall Florist.
 
She will always be remembered for her welcoming smile and gracious manner. Chris enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in her garden. Family was always very important to Chris and she looked forward to sharing her life with them.

Living family members include her husband, Gene Johnson of Charles City; four children, Gina Meyer of Phoenix, Ariz., Lon Johnson and special friend Lori Craighton of Thornton, Dawne (Brad) Bilharz and Jackie Johnson both of Charles City; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, John (Sandy) Emerson Jr., of Cedar Rapids, Jim (Donna) Emerson, of Urbandale, Mike (Susan) Emerson, of Sioux Center; and three sisters, MerryLee (Lester) Johnson and Maggie (Norm) Benson and Pat Clappier; and special friend Joe, all of Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother in infancy, Robert Emerson; and a sister, Kathy Boggess.

FOREST CITY - Elora Grace Parcher, the infant daughter of Christopher and Sabrina (DeBoe) Parcher, was born in Mason City, on June 5, 2010. She passed from her parent's loving arms to God's later that day in Iowa City.

Richard J. Paulsen

MASON CITY -Richard J. Paulsen, 68, of 642 S. Washington Ave., Mason City, died Sunday (June 6, 2010) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Father Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Richard John was born on Feb. 24, 1942, in Mason City, the son of Arnold and Christena (Berry) Paulsen. He was one of nine children. He attended St. Joseph Catholic High School and then entered the Air Force from March 23, 1959, until his honorable discharge Dec. 3, 1964. He served in Panama and Alaska.

He was employed in several professions which included roofing, truck driver, heavy equipment operator and his last employment as a driver for the Mason City Transit for 10 years until his retirement in 2008.

He enjoyed playing pool, cribbage, bingo, solving crossword puzzles, working in the yard and especially fishing.
 
Richard was a mix of stubborn and a soft hearted person. He loved his family and appreciated being from a large family.

He is survived by his mother, Christena Paulsen, Mason City; his children, Kenny Allen of Corpus Christie, Texas, Melody Allen of Eckelson, N.D., Thomas, Arnold, Richard (Richie) and William Paulsen, Shelly, Shannon, Scott, Dalayne, Dawayne, Jim, Orie, Linda, Sandy, Jeff, Tracy and Rick Germandson, all of Mason City; seven grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Jim (Gloria) Paulsen of Mason City, Geraldine (David) Krueger of Mankato, Minn., Patrick Paulsen and Christine Paulsen of Mason City; and a whole host of nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his in-laws, Larry Bitker, Lila, Patricia and Patricia Paulsen.

His father, Arnold John; sister, Dorothy Bitker; brothers, Donald, Thomas, and Jerry Paulsen; his two wives, Alice (Allen) Paulsen, and Alice (Germundson) Paulsen, and stepdaughter, Ann Germundson preceded Richard in death.

Marjorie Ann Wescott

MASON CITY -Marjorie Ann Wescott, 80, of 321 Fourth St. N.E. Mason City, died Friday (June 4, 2010) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Inurnment will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marjorie A. Wescott Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Marjorie was born on March 1, 1930, in Northwood, the daughter of Glenn and Olga Thoen. She attended schools in Northwood and graduated in 1948. She maintained close friendships with some of her classmates throughout her life.

Following graduation Marjorie was selected to go to Washington, D.C., to be a part of a huge pool of selected young women from all over the United States to help with the massive amount of paperwork following World War II. She was there for nearly two years working in the U.S. Navy Department and the Pentagon.

Upon returning to Iowa, Marjorie married George L. Wescott Jr. on Sept. 30, 1950, in Northwood. While living there, she worked at Tenold Insurance and the Worth County ASC office.

In 1958 the family moved to Milbank, S.D., as George's career with Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. required the move. In 1960 they returned to Iowa, settling in Hartley.

While living in Hartley, Marjorie was very active in the community events, taught Sunday School every year, belonged to several bridge clubs and raised three children, all of whom graduated from Hartley High School. She lived in Hartley until 1989 when she moved to Mason City and lived with her daughter Julie Nauss and family, giving them the benefit of her cooking skills and helping to raise three grandchildren while Julie worked.

In 2008 Marjorie moved to Shalom Towers II in Mason City, where she made many more friends and enjoyed many hours of cards and bingo with them. She became ill on May 20 and passed away on June 4.

Throughout her life she enjoyed reading, doing crosswords, playing bridge and interacting with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Julie Nauss (Dave Smith) of Mason City, Kirk (Jeri) Wescott, of Hartley, and George Wescott III, of Mason City; her sisters, Donna Stoltenberg, of Mason City, Ruth Erion, of Lexington Park, Md., Susan (Keith) Dieterich, of St. Ansgar and Sandy Thoen of Mason City; her brothers, Bob (Teri) Thoen of Burke, Va., David (Helen) Thoen, of Manly, and John (Drenda) Thoen of Windsor, Colo.; her grandchildren, Katie Wescott, of Spencer, Nathan Wescott, serving in the U.S. Navy, Greg (Magan Haag) Nauss, of Mason City, and Jessica Gutierrez, of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Timothy Wescott, and Aubrie Nauss. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding Marjorie in death were her parents, infant son, Gregory Lee Wescott in 1951; granddaughter, Jennifer Wescott in April 2002; and grandson, John Nauss, in May 2002; her husband, George Wescott Jr. in March 2000; and brother-in-law, Roger "Chris" Stoltenberg in June 2007.

LAKE MILLS - Lucille Williams, 83, died Monday (June 7, 2010) at her daughter's home in Lake Mills, after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.
