Fortier, Estelle Violet (France)

Maryville, Tenn. - Estelle Violet (France) Fortier, 54, passed away on July 12, 2008, at Blount Memorial Hospital. She suffered a massive heart attack and nothing could save her.

She was born in Gardena, Calif., on Aug. 18, 1954, a daughter of Edward and Gladys (Norman) France. Her formative years were spent in California. In her teens, she married and subsequently gave birth to four children. That marriage ended in divorce and in the early 1980s she moved with her children to Mason City, Iowa. There she met and married David Fortier. In 1985 they moved to Wentworth, N.H., with her children, Eugene and Benjamin Christopher, and in 1998 moved to Maryville, Tenn.

She was employed at McDonald's in Lincoln and also attended the New Hampshire Technical Institute in Laconia graduating at the top of her class.

Estelle was a proud American Indian being half Cherokee on her mother's side of the family. She spent many years researching her Cherokee heritage and practiced many of their traditions.

She was an excellent cook and could also grow anything in any type of soil. The many flower gardens surrounding her home in Maryville could attest to her affinity with nature. She was an amateur bird watcher and was not satisfied with recognizing various kinds of birds but spent hours researching and studying them. She had a wicked sense of humor, took great pride in her home and loved animals, especially her dog, Ginger and her two cats Spaz and Abby Normal.

Since moving to Maryville her most recent employment had been at Maryville College. She had also worked for First Tennessee Bank in the Student Loan Department.

She was pre-deceased by her parents and several siblings.

She is survived by her husband David; her children, John, Jessica, Eugene and Benjamin Christopher; her in-laws, Gilles and Lee Fortier of Wentworth, N.H.; her brother-in-law, James Fortier and his wife, Janna Robinson, of Alexandria, N.H.; Estelle's siblings, Mary, Rose, Geraldine, Louella, Dennis, Larry and Terry of California; and several grandchildren.

There were no calling hours and a memorial service was held on July 19 in Maryville. Cremation was handled by the Miller Funeral Home of Maryville with interment of her ashes to be held at the convenience of the family.

Anyone wishing to remember Estelle may donate to their local animal shelter or to any center for battered women. She is finally at peace. Soar with the eagles, Stell.
