MASON CITY - James L. Bergan, 63, of 279 Parkridge Drive, died Friday (July 18, 2008) at Heritage Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. this evening (July 21, 2008) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda, officiating.
Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with a flag folding ceremony conducted by members of the Mason City Memorial Association.
A public viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
James Lloyd Bergan was born on March 25, 1945. at Mason City, the son of Lloyd and Lila (Behm) Bergan.
Jim was a 1963 graduate of Newman High School, Mason City. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He was a sales representative for Gibson Greeting Card Company.
A life-long resident of Mason City, Jim was an avid coin collector and fisherman.
He is survived by three sons, Jason (Molly) Bergan, Spokane, Wash., Travis (Angela) Bergan, Ankeny, and Brent Bergan, Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren: Abby, Luke, Sophie and Kate; one brother, Larry (Sue) Bergan, Mason City; sister in-law, Janice Bergan, Mason City; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Richard Bergan.

Funeral services for Peggy Rasmussen will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Wesley with Pastor Denise Group officiating. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Hinrichsen, Robert "Bob"  
 
OSAGE - Robert "Bob" Hinrichsen, 78, of Osage, died Monday (July 21, 2008) at MCRHC-Hospice Unit in Osage.

Bob was born on Sept. 7, 1929, to Martin and Margaret (Hinrichsen) Hinrichsen at Rock Falls. After graduating from Rock Falls High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict.

On June 21, 1953, Bob married Anna Louise Shomber at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Nora Springs. After working at Montgomery Ward in Mason City for 16� years in the tire department, and then in the receiving department, he and his family moved to Osage in December of 1969.

He and Louise owned Bob's Upholstery business for 38 years. He really enjoyed creating a beautiful thing from a worn out piece of furniture.

He got Parkinson's Disease and retired from the business about three years ago. Bob and Louise spent many weekends going to flea markets. He especially enjoyed playing cards with his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Orchard Cemetery with military honors by Osage American Legion Post No. 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post No. 7920.

Visitation is from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Bob is survived by his wife, Louise Hinrichsen; two sons, Mark (Kim) Hinrichsen, and and Byron Hinrichsen, all of Osage; a grandson, Michael Hinrichsen, of Osage; a granddaughter, Jessie (Brandon) Parcel, of Osage; a sister, Helen (George) Reynolds of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Betty Hinrichsen of Nora Springs, Liz Hinrichsen of Rock Falls, Barbara Miller of Osage, Dorothy Turner of Council Bluffs, Linda Riker of Osage, Shirley Shomber, of Appling, Ga.; brother-in-law, Larry (Marlene) Moody, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Earl and Don; daughter-in-law, Linnette; and brothers-in-law, Charles Shomber, Robert Riker, Arlo Miller and Duane Shomber.

JEFFERSON - Funeral services for Florence Kathryne Matzen, 95, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Slininger-Rossow Chapel in Jefferson. Burial will be in the Franklin Township Cemetery in Cooper.

Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the family present to greet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Florence "Teddy" K. Matzen, daughter of Frank and Daisy (Stormer) Whitecotton, was born on April 17, 1913, in Morton, Ill. and died Saturday (July 19, 2008) at the Regency Park Nursing & Rehab in Jefferson.

As a child she moved to Iowa with her family, where she attended country school through the eighth grade.

On Jan. 4, 1938, Florence was united in marriage to Lawrence Matzen, in Mason City. They were the parents of two children, Gerald and Barbara (Shriver). They made their life together in Jefferson. She moved to Regency Park Nursing Facility in 2003.

Florence was employed at Krieger's Greenhouse, Franklin Manufacturing, Deal's Orchard as well as a homemaker. She was an active member of the Central Christian Church. She enjoyed her flower gardens and bird watching throughout her life.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters and her husband, Lawrence, in 1995.

Florence is survived by her son, Gerald; daughter, Barb and partner, Kenneth; nine grandchildren, Tim, Curtis, Jody, Starlene, Kelly, Connie, Kathy, Michael and Deana; many beloved great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia L. Verstegen was born on April 27, 1941, at Darboy, Wis., the daughter of Stanley and Mabel (Blodgett) Zuleger.

She was a 1959 graduate of Kimberly High School, Kimberly, Wis. Ginny attended Alverno College, Milwaukee, Wis., and graduated from St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wis., in 1964.

Ginny taught high school English in the De Pere, Wis., area. She married Lyle Verstegen in June of 1965; from this union three sons were born.

Moving to Mason City in 1966, Ginny worked at the Mason City Public Library, and later became the Director of Religious Education for St. Joseph and Holy Family parishes, retiring in June 2008 after serving for 30 years.

She is survived by three sons, David Verstegen, of Medford, Ore., Dan (Molly) Verstegen, of Mason City, Nick (Keely) Verstegen, of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren Allison Verstegen, Drew Verstegen, Joey Verstegen, Emma Verstegen, Max Verstegen, and Abby Verstegen; a brother, Tony (Sally) Zuleger, of Black Creek, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

CLEAR LAKE - Lloyd F. Wreghitt, 72, 15062 Hill St., Clear Lake, died Sunday (July 20, 2008) at The Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lloyd's Runway, 5016 225th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.

Family will greet friends beginning at noon.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. Inurnment will be held at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Rural Swaledale at a later time

Memorials may be given to the Lloyd F. Wreghitt Memorial Fund.

Lloyd was born on March 16, 1936, in Clear Lake, Iowa, the son of William and Margaret (Borton) Wreghitt. He attended Ventura schools and graduated from Ventura High School in 1954. Lloyd married Leona Ewing on Sept. 12, 1954 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

He worked for Armour's in Mason City for over 22 years. He started Aerial Ag Service as a crop duster in 1976 and operated it until he retired in 2003.

Lloyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, motorcycle riding (even to Sturgis, S.D.), camping and traveling the United States as a family, and wintering in Texas. Special to him were trips to Oshkosh, Wis., and many other air shows and airplane museums to indulge his love of flying.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Leona, of Clear Lake; two children, Randy Wreghitt, of New York, N.Y., and Sherri Wreghitt, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; sisters, Betty Ball, of Lincoln, Neb., and Nancy Nonnweiler and her husband, Dennis, of Mason City; brother, Fred Wreghitt and his wife, Carol, of Marble Rock; and several nieces and nephews.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, brother William Wreghitt; brother-in-law, John "Bud" Ball.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Richard Lee Bierbaum, 72, of 1837 Blake Blvd. S.E., Cedar Rapids, died Thursday (July 17, 2008, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a short illness.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, Cedar Rapids.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Survivors include his children, John (Autumn) Bierbaum of Cedar Rapids, Greg (Sonya) Woodhouse and Susan (Steve) Halsor, all of Albuquerque, N.M., and Stacy (Ron) West of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Walter Bierbaum of Mason City; and sister, Mary Hanson of Vermillion, S.D.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

Dick was born on Nov. 6, 1935, in Rockford, to Lee and Irene Bierbaum. Dick married Joanne Woodhouse in 1968. He worked in customer service for Pennick and Ford for over 30 years, retiring in 1999. Dick was known for his great sense of humor and unlimited patience. He loved cars, driving, photography, animals, and music; especially jazz.

Leslie George "Grandpa" Bisgrove, 103, passed away Sunday (July 20, 2008) at Lake Wales Medical Center in Lake Wales, Fla.

Born April 18, 1905, in Burchinal, Iowa, he grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa, and lived in Chicago, Ill., where he retired as a superintendent, building Diamond T. Trucks. He also lived in Monroe, Mich., prior to moving to Palm Harbor in 1976; and moved to Lake Wales in 1993.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, fishing and all animals. He was a kind and gentle man with a great outlook on life and was befriended by everyone he met? and he was "Grandpa" to all.

Leslie was preceded by his loving wife, Verlynne; and sons, Leslie Ted, Ronald and Bobby.

Survivors include his son, Larry Bisgrove, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home, in Lake Wales, Fla.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home, Lake Wales, Fla.

Memorial services and inurnment will be held in Clear Lake, a date and time will be announced.

MASON CITY - Harry Andrew Christensen, 91, of Mason City died Monday (July 21, 2008) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, July 25, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Memorial Columbarium at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with Pastor Jonna Jensen officiating.

Harry was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Casey, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Christine (Sorensen) Christensen. He married Arlene (Belseth) on May 30, 1940, in Austin, Minn., and to this union three children were born.

Harry worked as a semi-truck driver for Ruan Transport most of his life. In his spare time he loved to fish, hunt and play golf. He also enjoyed playing euchre and was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Teamsters Union. Most importantly, Harry loved his family.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Mason City; his daughter, Merrilane "Chris" (Jon) Jensen of Clear Lake; his son, Gene (Denise) Christensen of Nevis, Minn.; his grandchildren, Greg (Diana) Nicoson, of Columbia, S.C., Pastor Jonna Jensen of Baldwin, Iowa, David Christensen, Jody Christensen of Wisconsin, and Mark Christensen of Wisconsin; his great-grandchildren, Jonathon, Christopher and Elizabeth Nicoson of Columbia, S.C., and Noah Jensen Tabor of Baldwin, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

LAKE MILLS - Jay Dean Fjelstad, 42, of Lake Mills, died Monday (July 21, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning (July 24, 2008) at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Final Call will be by the Lake Mills Fire Department. Burial will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at Salem Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 401 S. Lake St., Lake Mills, and again one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jay Dean Fjelstad was born Feb. 12, 1966, at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Roger and Dorothy (Quisling) Fjelstad. Jay attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School and later graduated from Ellsworth College.

Jay worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City for the last 15 years. Jay loved his family and enjoyed the company of his friends. He was a true outdoorsman, enjoying farming, hunting, four wheeling, snowmobiling and keeping his truck shiny. Jay was active on the Lake Mills Fire Department.

He will be dearly missed by his loving family: daughters, Megan and Morgan Fjelstad; his parents, Roger and Dorothy Fjelstad; and sister, Karen (Kerby) Knudtson, all of Lake Mills; a niece, Kristanne (David) Low and their children, Dylan and Lauryn, of St. Ansgar; a nephew, Andrew Knudtson of Lake Mills; special friend, Angela Franks of Lake Mills; maternal aunts and uncles, Jerry (Jan) Kallheim of Madison Lake, Minn., and Tom (Judy) Lawrence of Billings, Mont.

MANLY - Ginger E. Helmer, 86, died Tuesday (July 22, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 815 N. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Roy Weeden officiating. Inurnment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Ginger was born Nov. 22, 1921, in Armstrong, the daughter of Walter E. and Mabel L. (Norris) Benton. She attended school in Manly. She was united in marriage to LeRoy Helmer in September 1947; to this union two children were born.

Ginger loved reading, baking and being outdoors. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends. She was a sweet, kind, gentle, and patient person. Ginger was a good listener to many. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her children, Lonnie (Debbie) Helmer of Mason City and Nancy (Terry) Eldridge of Fertile; grandchildren, Lynn Helmer of Hampton, Christie Helmer of Mason City, and Devon Eldridge of Garner; great-grandchildren, Renee Helmer, Ryan Helmer and Eli Eldridge; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, LeRoy; and sisters, Marie Larson, Virginia Suby and Darlene DeMaris.

BROWNSDALE, Minn. - Bill Koenigs, 29, of Brownsdale, Minn., and formerly of Meyer, Iowa, died Monday (July 21, 2008) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., of injuries received from a motorcycle accident.

Bill was born Nov. 24, 1978, in Osage, the son of Ray and Kathy (Ryan) Koenigs. He attended Visitation School in Stacyville and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1997, where he was senior class president. Bill married Mary Gossman on Aug. 14, 2004, in Rose Creek, Minn. They lived near Brownsdale.

He was employed at Hormel Foods in Austin, Minn. Bill had an avid interest in antique Oliver tractors and loved his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He enjoyed his family and especially enjoyed his nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 25, at Sacred Heart Oratory in Meyer with Father James Seitz, Father John Moser, Father Ruben Spinler and Deacon Gary Kasel officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Oratory in Meyer with a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.

LAKE MILLS - Luther E. Okland, 84, of Lake Mills, died Sunday (July 20, 2008) at his home in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Center Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills with the Rev. Thomas Rank,officiating. Burial will take place at Center Evangelical Cemetery in rural Lake Mills. Military Rites by Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post No. 235 and VFW Post No 6161 Leland.

Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today evening at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills, and again one hour prior to the service at the church.

Luther Edwin Okland was born Aug. 2, 1923, near Lake Mills in Winnebago County, the son of S.T. and Christina (Solomonson) Okland. Luther attended country school near Leland and graduated with the Leland High School class of 1941.

Luther was united in marriage to Ruby V. Carlson on April 28, 1942, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Leland.

Luther served his country in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. He was in the Pacific Theater, Okinawa, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Luther farmed for many years, then was employed at Lake Mills Graphic Publishing Co.

Lorena "Renie" M. Pederson, 74, of Carroll, formerly of Mason City, died July 19, 2008, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a brief illness.

Funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, July 25, at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with the Rev. Ken Ferguson of the First United Methodist Church in Carroll officiating. Visitation is from 8:30 a.m. until time of the service.

Further services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Christ Lutheran Cemetery near LeMars.

Lorena was retired from Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa where she worked for 25 years as patient accounting clerk. She lived most of her life in the Mason City area, and has lived in Carroll the past 2� years.

She was born Feb 2, 1934, at LeMars, the daughter of Clarence and Emma Freda (Dirks) Collmann Reinhart. She graduated from Brunsville High School, Brunsville, Iowa.

She married Dr. David D. Pederson on Jan. 14, 1953, at Minneapolis. He died in 1987. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Mason City. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, reading, and visiting with people.

Surviving are two sons, Derek Pederson and his wife, Carrie, of Lakeville, Minn., and David Pederson and his wife, Mary, of Carroll; four grandchildren, Nicholas Pederson, Ella Pederson, Sarah Bushnell and her husband, Anthony, and Bekah Rotert and her husband, Kyle; great-grandchildren, Emily, David, Michaela and Rachael.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant daughter.

WINONA, Minn. - William "Bill" Rickoff, 81, of 1316A McNally Drive, Winona, died Monday (July 21, 2008) at Watkins Manor Home, Winona. Bill was born in Mason City on June 19, 1927, the son of John and Rose Rickoff.

He was united in marriage to Stella Malaktaris on July 25, 1948, in Mason City at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church.

Bill was employed in supervisory and management positions by Armour Meats in Mason City for 29 years until the plant closing in 1975. He then pursued his love of cooking in Winona, Minn., where he owned and operated Papa John's Pizza until his retirement in 1988. After retirement he enjoyed working for Tom Severson at Severson Oil Co. in Winona.

Bill was a member of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Mason City, a life member of the Elks Lodge 327 and a member VFW Post 1287 of Winona. He served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He enjoyed cooking and helping at local fish fry fundraisers and cherished his weekly coffee with the boys outings with his special friends.

He is survived by his children, Kristy (Robert) McCready of Carmel, Ind., and their children, Collin and Ryan; John (Jill) Rickoff of Carmel, Ind., and their children, Jamison, Jaclyn, Jennalee and Jared; Jim (Lynda) Rickoff of Winona and their children, Tony and Nick; and William (Chris) Rickoff Jr. of Winona, and their children, Alex, John and Jenna.

Bill is also survived by his sister, Ann Bogdan of Indianapolis, Ind.; three sisters-in-law, Helen Pergakis of Mason City, Arita Travlos of Columbia, Mo., and Philo (James) Hettinger of Kansas City, Mo.; and brothers-in-law, George (Georgia) Malaktaris of Minot, N.D., and Robert Halloran of Richfield, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Stella; parents; and two brothers, George and Pete Rickoff; and one sister, Marie (Lena) Hausauer.

Funeral services to celebrate Bill's life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Winona with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, Minn., with veterans burial rites provided by the VFW Post 1287, Winona, Minn.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, 1476 W. Broadway, Winona.

Keith Leroy Anderson, 65 passed away peacefully Sunday (July 20, 2008) in Paradise, Calif.

He was born Jan. 14, 1943, in Thompson, Iowa. He was the third of eight siblings. He joined the U.S. Army when he was 17 and was stationed in Germany and then did a tour of duty in Vietnam as an advisor to the French Army.

Keith enjoyed taking trips up and down the California coast in his Jaguar. He lived in Sacramento for many years and worked as an accountant for about 30 years. After he retired from Northern Sacramento School District he moved to Magalia, Calif.

He is survived by sons Justin Anderson and Matthew Anderson and daughter Gabrielle Whitehurst. Siblings include brothers, Robert Anderson, Dale Anderson and Henry Shaffer, and sisters Sharon Mathey, Susan Lucas and Suzanne Kline. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Aunt Lavina Peterson and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Helen Shaffer and Tilford Anderson, and brother Norman Shaffer.

The memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 28, at the Old Magalia Historical Chapel, 13700 Old Skyway, Magalia, Calif.

NORTHWOOD - Sylverne Burtness, 98, of Northwood died Wednesday (July 23, 2008) at the Throne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

A funeral service for Sylverne will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, 1406 Central Ave., Northwood, with the Rev. Karl Hermanson officiating. Burial will be in the Stateline Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation for Sylverne will be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sylverne Burtness was born on Feb. 16, 1910, in Monterey, Minn., now called Trimont, Minn., the daughter of Matt and Mattie (Wilson) Johnson. She was baptized in infancy and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown. She moved several times with her parents until they settled near Hanlontown, where she attended rural country grade school and graduated from Hanlontown High School.

She was united in marriage to Olger Burtness on Oct. 25, 1926, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death. After their marriage they farmed most of their lives in the rural Gordonsville, Minn., area. During her early years she worked several years in the drug store and grocery store in Hanlontown.

Sylverne worked for 20 years as a nurse's aide, 4� years in Albert Lea, Minn., and 15� years at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood. Sylverne loved this work and would often be found at a home where care was needed. After her husband died, whom she cared for 2� years when he was bedridden, she sold her home in Gordonsville and moved to Northwood, to be closer to her church and other conveniences.

She enjoyed handwork, reading, writing letters, crossword puzzles and cooking. She loved her small garden and flowers, but most of all she loved her family and friends around her.

She was a member of the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid in Northwood.

Left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Beverly Larsen of Whiting, New Jersey, and Marilyn Becker of Northwood; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, infant granddaughter, two sisters, two brothers and two sons-in-law.

BELLEVUE - Florence M. Fischer, 84, of Bellevue died Monday (July 21, 2008) at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, July 24, at Kingery Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. today at the Funeral Home.

Florence was born on Nov. 24, 1923, in Isabell, S.D., the daughter of Gustav and Lydia (Graff) Ochsner. Her mother passed away in May 1924; she was then raised by Ludwig and Laya Pfeifer.

Florence married Edwin Fischer on Feb. 14, 1943. Edwin passed away Jan. 21, 2007.

Florence was a teacher for more than 38 years. She started teaching at the age of 19 in a one-room country school house in North Dakota. Even after retirement-, she continued to tutor children in their homes. She received her Bachelors Degree from Westmar College in LeMars.

She was known by most people for having a great sense of humor and giving everyone a "hard time." She enjoyed bingo, doing crafts and sewing. Being with people and spending time in the winter in Las Vegas with her husband were also special to her.

Surviving are her daughter, Vivian (John) Pitlo of Bellevue; a sister, Elaine (Maynard) Schmidt of Sturgis, S.D.; and brother Devine Ochsner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and a sister.

A Florence M. Fischer Memorial Fund has been established.

Florence Irene Frey was born Jan. 7, 1924, at Thornton, a daughter of Floyd Alan and Luella Johanna (Neve) Harmon. She graduated from Thornton High School in 1940.

Florence was united in marriage with George Frey on Jan. 5, 1941, at a Lutheran parsonage in Mason City. They made their home in Sheffield.

While raising her family Florence worked as a bookkeeper for J&R Tire and Electrolux in Mason City, as well as for her parent's service station Harmon's DX in Sheffield.

Florence was a longtime member of Zion St. John Lutheran Church and a member of the church circles. She also volunteered at the Sheffield Care Center for many years.

Florence was a seamstress who made quilts and crocheted for her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of great pride for her.

Florence is survived by her children: Jerry (Bev) Frey of Mason City; Jane (Dallas) Etnier of Sheffield; grandchildren, John (Julie) Frey of Denver, Colo.; Mica (Jeff) Harris and their children Zach, Caleb and Noah of Mason City, LeAnn (Eric) Eckhardt and children Georgi and Cooper of Sheffield, Kelly (Becky) Etnier and children Eliott, Jack and Tyler of Olathe, Kansas; brother and sisters Don (Dorothy) Harmon of Anamosa, Eva Mae Long of Clear Lake, Mary Ann Hendrickson of Gilbertville; brother-in-law Kent Hove of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

BOULDER, Colo. - Gregory James Powell, 55, of Boulder passed away July 18, 2007, in Puerto Adventuras, Mexico.

He was born Oct. 15, 1952, in Iowa City to Dr. Robert and Mary (Kling) Powell.

In 1971 Greg graduated from Mason City High School and received his B.A. in 1976 from the University of Iowa. He continued his education and in 1977 earned an M.A. from Central Missouri State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado in 1985.

He is survived by his son, Ben, 22, and daughter, Megan, 19, both of Boulder, Colo.; his parents, Robert and Mary; brothers, Jeff and Randy; sister, Ann; nieces, Claire and Alana; nephews, Kai and Sam; and ex-wife, Marga.

Greg was a very loving father who was proud of and devoted to his son and daughter. He was always supportive of his children and their interests, especially enjoying their soccer games, rarely missing a game throughout the years. He also coached YMCA soccer for both his children's teams.

Not only was he giving to his children, but he was also a volunteer in his community for organizations such as Meals on Wheels and the American Heart Association.

Greg developed Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 5 and had become an active participant in research studies at the Barbara Davis Center (for Diabetes) in Denver.

Greg worked as a financial and business manager for various Boulder businesses since 1985, including the City of Boulder Housing Authority, University of Colorado, and most recently for a private surgeon's office at the Boulder Medical Pavilion.

Greg loved the outdoors, hiking, playing racquetball, classic rock music, concerts, traveling and artwork from local artists - mainly photography, an interest that he shared with his daughter.

He was most happy when with his children and in the outdoors.

Roger William Carmody, 78, of Gravette, Ark., died Thursday (July 24, 2008) in Bella Vista, Ark. He was born on Feb. 13, 1930, in Rock Falls, to John and Josephine Carmody.
He married Mabel Teepe Hines on Oct. 9, 1954, in Preston, Minn. He was a retired salesman. Mr. Carmody was a member of the Hiwasse 1st Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Joan Schroeder; his parents; four sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mabel Carmody; a son, David Carmody and wife, LauraLynn, of West Union, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Janet Hilsman, of Bella Vista, Ark.; a son-in-law, Dennis Schroeder of Pinedale, Wyo.; one sister, Rosella Mayo, of the Chicago, Ill. area; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Hiwasse Baptist Church, Hiwasse, Ark., with Pastor Jim Daniel officiating.
A second memorial service will be held in Orchard, Iowa at a later date.
Cremation arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home & Crematory, in Bella Vista, Ark.

ROCK FALLS - Gary Lane Fingalsen, 73, of 301 Spring Creek Lane, died Tuesday (July 22, 2008) at his home.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2008, at the Nora Springs Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs. Burial will be at Rock Grove Cemetery, in Nora Springs, with military honors provided by the American Legion H.D.S. Post 449.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, July 25, 2008, at Shecklers Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs.
Gary was born Nov. 17, 1934, in Mason City, the son of Virgil and Cleo (Myers) Fingalsen. He graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1953, and then enlisted in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany. Gary married Lois (Mattson) on Dec. 25, 1982 in Des Moines.
When he was younger, Gary farmed with his father, then he worked for many years as a semi truck driver and retired with Roadway Express. Gary also owned the Rock Falls Lounge for 20 years.
In his spare time he enjoyed playing card games and he loved to gamble. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends, or just being around people. Gary loved a good joke, practical or otherwise.
Gary is survived by his wife, Lois Fingalsen, of Rock Falls; his children, Randy (Linda) Fingalsen, of Downingtown, Pa., Craig (Cathy) Fingalsen, of Rock Falls, Todd (Susan) Fingalsen, of Nora Springs, Melissa (Mark) Johnson, of Grinnell, Rob (Monica) Klinke, of Oak Park, Ill.; his grandchildren, Jim (Livia) Lyver, Megan Lyver, Sean Lyver, all from Downingtown, Pa., Keely Fingalsen, of Rock Falls, Mitchell and Maxwell Fingalsen, of Nora Springs, Tyler and Jackie Johnson, of Grinnell, and Liz and R.J. Klinke, of Oak Park, Ill.; his sister, Sandra (Gordon) Jackson, of Mesquite, Nev.; his brother, Chuck (Pat) Fingalsen, of Ruthven; his nieces and nephews, Barb (Jim) Lemons, Bob Jackson, Brett (Kate) Jackson, Dave (Dawn) Fingalsen, and Cindy (Tom) Johnson; his uncle, Allan (Bettie) Fingalsen; and his special dog, Buddy.
The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Gary's Hospice nurse, Renee.

MASON CITY - Royden O. Peterson, 88, of Mason City, died Tuesday (July 22, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, Friday, July 25, 2008, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Roy was born on April 21, 1920, in Lake Mills, the son of Peter and Augusta (Fjone) Peterson. On May 30, 1947, he married LaVonne Mulert in Mason City.
Roy served in the capacity of Machinist Mate in the U.S. Navy on the USS Crescent City in World War II from 1942-45. Honorably discharged, he worked as a mechanic for Sedars Pontiac in Mason City.
Roy was passionate about fishing with his brothers and friends, he loved to go to the Mississippi and watch the water run.
Roy was the neighborhood mechanic and could often be found tinkering with vehicles or motors and creating inventions to solve household mechanical problems.
Roy also loved to travel to Arizona and visit his sister. Roy had a unique spirit and heart for children, he had a special way of making a child feel important and valued and was considered to be a favorite Uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was also a good neighbor and friend to all who knew him.
Roy was a committed, devoted husband to his wife, LaVonne, whom he loved with his whole heart. He had a quick sense of humor and a positive attitude. Roy amused his family with a library of "Royisms" and we know that he's "Finer than Frog Hair" now.
He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Killian of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Vincent Mulert of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Telford, Addler, Donovan, and Phillip; and his wife, LaVonne, in 2001.

Powell, Gregory James  
 
BOULDER, Colo. - Gregory James Powell, 55, of Boulder, passed away July 18, 2007, in Puerto Adventuras, Mexico.
He was born Oct. 15, 1952, in Iowa City to Dr. Robert and Mary (Kling) Powell.
In 1971, Greg graduated from Mason City High School and received his B.A. in 1976 from the University of Iowa. He continued his education, and in 1977 earned a M.A. from Central Missouri State University and an MBA from University of Colorado in 1985.
He is survived by his son, Ben, 22, and daughter, Megan, 19, both of Boulder, Colo.; his parents, Robert and Mary; brothers, Jeff and Randy; sister, Anne; nieces, Claire and Alana; and nephews, Kai and Sam, and ex-wife, Marga.
Greg was a very loving father who was proud of and devoted to his son and daughter. He was always supportive of his children and their interests, especially enjoying their soccer games, rarely missing a game throughout the years. He also coached YMCA Soccer for both his children's teams.
Not only was he giving to his children, but he was also a volunteer in his community for organizations such as Meals on Wheels and the American Heart Association.
Greg developed Type 1 Diabetes at the age of five and had become an active participant in research studies at the Barbara Davis Center (for Diabetes) in Denver.

Salsbury, John G.  
 
John G. Salsbury was born in Western, Nebraska, on June 12, 1916. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Iowa State University in 1938, and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at ISU in 1940.
His father began Salsbury Laboratories in 1926, and after graduating, John joined the company, working in many departments over the years. In 1945 he became vice president and general manager of the firm, was named president in 1960, and in 1971 became chairman of the company when his eldest son, Doug, became president. He retired in November 1982.
During his working years, John was also very involved in organizations beyond the lab.
He was president of the American Poultry Historical Society and the Animal Health Institute, chairman of the American Egg Board, and director of the Iowa State University Foundation, the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Broiler Council, and the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association.
He was a member of the World's Poultry Science Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Society of Parasitologists, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and the Poultry Science Association. He was also the president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club in Charles City, Iowa, and was active in Boy Scouts of America, for which he received the Silver Beaver Award.
After his retirement, he had time to pursue a favorite hobby and became a fine craftsman and miniaturist, building many dollhouses which his wife, Doris, decorated.
His wife of 66 years is Doris J. Brunner-Salsbury. They have five children: Douglas E. Salsbury of Whitehall, Mont.; Craig B. Salsbury of Fairbanks, Alaska; Debra Feintech of Portland, Maine; Barbara J. Leduc of Omaha, Neb.; and Rebecca A. Miller of Minneapolis, Minn.
Dr. Salsbury is a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Dillon, Mont.
He and his wife live in Bozeman, Mont.
A private memorial service has taken place at the St. James Episcopal Church Chapel in Bozeman.
