Lee was known as a gracious hostess and over the years welcomed more than 85 students and visitors from other countries into her home where they stayed anywhere from a few days up to a year. Her door was always open to friends and neighbors for a cup of coffee in the morning or tea in the afternoon.

She is survived by her daughter Pamela Fallesen, Baldwinsville, N.Y.; her son Lovell (Carol) Landon, Amherst, N.H.; grandchildren Elizabeth Maiese and Todd Fallesen and James, Emily and Sarah Landon; great-granddaughter Avery Grace Maiese; and several nieces and nephews whom she adored. Johnson, Marian C.

1912-2008

Marian Cora Fox Johnson, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2008, following a stroke on June 30.

Marian called Mason City home from 1953 until February 2004 when, following a bout of cancer, she moved to California where her daughter, Elaine, lives. Marian devoted her life to her family, community and to music and was much loved.

She was a music teacher for over 70 years, serving as a vocal music teacher for the public schools as well as giving private violin lessons until the age of 91. She was an accomplished violinist, member and leader in many community organizations as well as a volunteer and caregiver.

She was born in Perry, Iowa, on Oct. 16, 1912, to Owen and Adaline Fox. Her older brother, Glen, died at the age of 2 the same month she was born; she therefore grew up without siblings. The house was nonetheless full of music. Her mother was a gifted pianist and for a time accompanied silent movies at the local cinema.

Marian received her first violin at the age of 10. Because there were no violin teachers in Perry, her mother took her each week to Des Moines - an 80-mile round trip - for violin lessons, even during the Depression. She became an excellent violinist and went on to attend Simpson College on a music scholarship, graduating in 1936.

She taught music in central Iowa until 1940, when she married Henry C. Litton and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1944 daughter Elaine was born. In that same year Henry was killed in northern France while serving in World War II. Marian returned to Iowa and to her work as a music teacher.

In 1953 she moved to Mason City to teach elementary vocal music for the public school system, which she did until her retirement in 1974. She also taught violin on a private basis to numerous students who ranged in age from 3 to 65, until 2004 when she was forced to stop for health reasons.

She relished teaching but more than anything she cherished people. A former student who went on to become an accomplished musician and teacher in her own right once commented that Marian did not teach how to play the violin, she taught how to love.

In 1955 she married Omer C. Johnson, a biologist and member of the teaching staff at Mason City Junior College until his retirement. Omer died in 1977.

Besides her family and music, Marian adored her community. She was a member of the North Iowa Symphony Orchestra and served as concert mistress for 20 years.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church and active in the Community of Christ Church, Clear Lake, where she frequently shared her musical talents. She regularly played her violin for residents of the Good Shepherd and IOOF Nursing Homes and often provided residents with help and personal care. She was active in the AARP and in the Retired Teachers Association, PEO and Matinee Musical as well.

Among her many performances as a violinist, in 1992 for her 80th birthday she gave a solo violin concert as a gift to the community. Over 300 people were in attendance. It was her first recital since college. In 1999 Marian traveled to Germany and played for the wedding of her grandson, John.

Marian received many honors for her work. In 1992 she was recognized by the North Iowa Symphony Orchestra for her "lifelong dedication to music." In 1993, she received the Silver Distinction Award for Excellence in Education from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was the Band Festival grand marshal in 1996. In 1995 she was the honored recipient of the Harmony of Living Award from the River City Barbershop Chorus with the following inscription, "Marian has brought music, love and thoughtful caring to vast numbers of people in this area ... She doesn't seek the spotlight. She just does what she believes needs to be done to help lift the level of living of those around her."

Marian never left Mason City in her heart. Following her move to California she received mail and calls from her many friends, which she cherished. A particularly poignant e-mail from a former student arrived a few days before her death. It read, "Please tell Marian I have loved her for all of my 69 years and that she was largely responsible for introducing me to music which became the most satisfying and rewarding aspect of my life, and I am forever grateful for that."

Marian is survived by her daughter, Elaine Litton; grandson, John Moen; great-grandson, Lukas Henry Moen; stepdaughter, Ardith Morningstar; step-grandchildren, Steven, Mike, Mark, Erica and Rebecca; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and Ron and Linda Jenkins, whom she considered as her own children.

The family will hold a private memorial. We wish to thank all of you for your love and devotion to her.
