Teague, Myron A.
|
|
|
ADRIAN,
Mich. - Myron A. Teague, 84,
formerly of Thompson, passed away on
Monday (June 30, 2008) at the home
of his son, Graham Teague, in
Adrian, Mich.
Myron was born March 21, 1924, in
Lake Mills, the son of Charley and
Inez (Abbott) Teague. He grew up and
graduated from high school in
Thompson. During World War II Myron
proudly served his country in the
U.S. Navy in the Pacific theatre.
On Nov. 23, 1941, Myron married
Betty Graham of Forest City. Betty
passed away in 2001 at their home in
Thompson shortly before they would
have celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary.
Myron attended Waldorf College in
Forest City and later received his
Bachelor of Arts degree from Luther
College in Decorah. He continued his
education at Western State
University in Colorado, where he
attained his Master of Arts in
music.
Myron pursued a career as the band
director in several Iowa towns,
including Scarville, Meservey,
Fonda-Varina and Rembrandt. While in
Rembrandt, Myron's bands and small
group ensembles consistently
acheived first ratings every year at
high school music contests the
entire seven years he taught there.
In 2001, at the age of 77, Myron
returned to Rembrandt to direct a
band made up of former students.
Some 40 years after leaving that
school about 20 or so of his "kids"
came back, warmed up their
instruments and put on a concert for
the Rembrandt Centennial. It was a
moving tribute to a much-beloved
teacher and mentor to these
50-plus-year-old former students.
This continues to be an annual event
in Rembrandt even though Myron was
unable to attend the last few
concerts due to health reasons.
After leaving Rembrandt in 1961,
Myron and his family moved to
Adrian, Mich., where he continued
directing music at the Adrian Public
Schools, from which he retired in
1987. He continued to teach in
Panama for the next two years,
working for the Department of
Defense. Myron and Betty then
returned to Thompson to live in the
same home where he was raised. He
spent the last five winters in
Sebring, Fla., with his
daughter-in-law, Jeannie, where he
enjoyed the sun and pool.
He was a prolific writer of letters
and stayed in contact over the years
with many of his Iowa friends. He
was a member of the American School
Band Directors Association, the
Order of the Beaded Belt, the
American Legion, and a life-member
of the VFW Annis Fint Post No. 1584
and the Masons. He was also active
with the Adrian City Band.
Myron is survived by his three
children: Graham Teague and his
wife, Jeannie, of Adrian, Patrick
Teague and his wife, Mary, of
Columbia, S.C., and Cynthia Hoover
and her husband, Ken, of
Jacksonville, Fla.; six
grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and two
brothers, Bernard (Muriel) Teague of
Freemont, Calif., and Lyle (Dora)
Teague of Adrian.
A memorial service for Myron was
held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2,
at the Wagley Funeral Home in Adrian
with full military honors conducted
by the VFW Annis Fint Post No. 1584.
Friends visited the family from 11
a.m. until time of services on
Wednesday July 2 at the Wagley
Funeral Home in Adrian, Mich.
Iowa friends are invited to visit
with the family from noon until 2
p.m. on Saturday, July 5, at Myron's
home at 106 N. Harrison in Thompson.
Contributions in memory of Myron may
be made to Hospice of Northwest
Iowa.

Abao Sr., Armando Iguban "Pogi"
|
|
|
PHILIPPINES
- Armando "Pogi" I. Abao Sr., 51, of Alabang Muntinlupa
City, Philippines, died Sunday (June 29, 2008) at
Alabang Medical Center, Philippines.
The all-day-and-night wake with prayer service offered
by all his friends, neighbors and family is held from
July 1 to July 4 at his home in Alabang, Philippines.
Mass service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 5,
with the Rev. Father MonteCarlo Villoria officiating.
Interment will be in Alabang Memorial Cemetery.
Armando "Pogi" Abao Sr. was born May 31, 1957, in
Pandacan Paco, Manila, Philippines.
Armando graduated from Alabang Community College and got
his AA degree majoring in electronic science. Armando
worked in San Miquel Corporation for five years (the
same company his father worked at and retired from) to
gain experience and in networking.
Armando had worked in Saudi Arabia for a two-year
contract and came home. He built a decent house, bought
a new vehicle and opened his own General Merchandise
Store in Alabang with the help of his wife, Amelia,
managing the store. He pursued his career in electronics
as a sideline job. In recent years, he also worked in
the Municipal Elementary School as a part-time security
guard at night.
Armando was a very outgoing, friendly person and had
marvelous public relations. He was well known in the
whole town of Alabang and in other connected towns. Even
when he was young he never stayed home to do activities;
he was always with friends, playing guitar, singing,
helping move people in the neighborhood and was very
involved in community service.
He was a member of a "Barangay Tanod" which means
scheduled member of town who watched and stayed awake at
night to watch the neighborhood in order to have a
welcoming and safe town. There is where we got the alias
name of "Pogi," because he was always on the go, with
friends and neighbors, my folks had tried to hide him
for much needed family time, as his friends would
monopolize all his time if you would let them. Armando
Sr., was a very generous man, always giving to others,
wanting to help them. Once he was awarded and named as
The Living Saint of Alabang.
Armando is survived by his wife, Amelia R. Abao; two of
his biological children, Armie and Armando Jr., and two
of his adopted children; his mother, Natalia I. Abao;
his brothers and sisters, Arturo (Liz) Abao, Binan
Laguna, Aida (Ivan) Santos of Irving Texas, Angelina
(Rudy) Victa of Muntinlupa City, Alvin (Che-Che), Pasig
Manila, Anita (Glen) dela Cruz, Binan Lagua, and
Anamaria (Steve) Canchola of Clear Lake, Iowa; one
grandson, John-Paul, 8 years old; several nieces and
nephews.
His father, Alberto Abao Sr., and his brother, Alberto
Abao Jr., preceded him in death.

VerHelst, Russell L.
|

|
KLEMME
- Russell L. VerHelst, 66, of Klemme, a lifelong
resident and farmer in the Goodell and Klemme areas,
died unexpectedly Tuesday (July, 1, 2008) on his
farmland that he loved so dearly in rural Klemme.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday,
July 5, at the Klemme United Methodist Church in Klemme,
with the Rev. Donna Buckman and the Rev. Donald Thompson
officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township
Cemetery, Klemme.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Friday, July
4, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St., Klemme,
and will continue one hour prior to the services on
Saturday at the church.
The family suggests those wishing to express their
sympathies through a memorial in Russell's name consider
the Klemme United Methodist Church, to the family or to
a charity of their own choice.
Russell Lee VerHelst was born Sept. 15, 1941, on a farm
outside of Swaledale, the son of Mell and Josie (Lewis)
VerHelst.
He was one of five children born to Mell and Josie. He
attended and graduated from Belmond High School in
Belmond, with the Class of 1959.
Russell was united in marriage to JoAnn Helps on June 3,
1962, at the Klemme United Methodist Church. Following
their marriage Russ and JoAnn lived in the Goodell and
Klemme areas. Their union was blessed with two children,
Rodney and Christine.
Russell and JoAnn farmed and raised their family on
farms west of Goodell and later moved to a farm east of
Klemme where they made their home for 38 years. For the
past three years they had lived in the town of Klemme.
Russell was a farmer through and through for his entire
life. He absolutely loved to work the earth and raise a
bountiful crop. He received great satisfaction and
pleasures in raising and caring for nurse cattle and the
calves that were born. Russell was very much a horse
enthusiast and had cared for and worked with many teams
of horses during his life. His love for the horses
brought with it an interest in the restoration and the
building of various carraige and wagon racks for them to
pull about, as well as a chance to work the horse in
front of an antique implement.
The family and friends recall on many occasions when a
buggy, carriage, or wagon ride alongside, or with Russ
at the helm might turn into an adventure if the horses
thought it was neccessary. Russell's favorite breed of
horses were Hackney's, though his love of horses was
universal. Russell's fondness for animals was also
shared in the lives of many of his dogs.
In addition to his vocation as a farmer, Russ had worked
for a time at the Goodell Grocery which later became
We-3, as a butcher. He had also sold Walnut Grove Feeds
and worked at Eaton Corporation in Belmond for many
years.
Russ and JoAnn had enjoyed motorcycle riding and had
taken various trips with friends over the years. He
loved camping and was an avid fisherman. He looked
forward to fishing excursions to Canada and Minnesota,
but many of his favorite fishing memories were spent on
family fishing adventures teaching his children and
grandchildren about his beloved sport.
He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed times
spent watching horse racing, boxing and various other
sporting events on TV. In more recent times Russ had
taken a liking to watching college softball. His
absolutely loved spectating and supporting his children
in their extracurricular activities and in later years
cheering for his grandchildren at their events. Russ was
their No. 1 fan in life.
He was a man filled with a great sense of humor, wit,
and of course cherished the opportunity to share a
one-liner, or play a part in a joke. He had a great
ability to make you laugh. Russell loved old Western
movies and was an avid reader of Louis Lamour books. In
earlier years Russ and his wife and family spent many
times together with friends and family at sing-a-longs
where he shared the gift of his wonderful voice. The
family and friends also reflect fondly on many trips
with Russ to the Clay County Fair.
Many family and friends will cherish the items that Russ
had handcrafted for them over the years of his hobby of
woodworking. He had made many items such as hope chests,
Matchbox Car ramps, dorm lofts, headboards, and Barbie
doll houses. He loved to work with loving hands and
spent countless hours in his woodshop. Russ always had a
special place in his heart for children.
In addition to his love for times with his family and
friends, Russell gave of his time to support the
community and education system of his town by serving on
the Klemme School Board and through many years of civic
involvement and membership in the Klemme Lions Club.
Russ was a longtime member of the Klemme United
Methodist Church.
Russ will be missed by his family and many friends for
his adventuresome personality, his boundless humor and
for just being a kid at heart. His life path will be
vacant in the lives of his wife, children, grandchildren
and siblings, but his legacy will burn bright in their
hearts.
Russell's memory will live on in the lives of his wife,
JoAnn VerHelst, of Klemme; his son, Rod and wife, Chris,
of Des Moines; and his daughter, Chris and her husband,
Steve Schmidt, of Dallas Center; a sister, Gail Langlitz
and her husband, Larry, of Goodell; two brothers: Lester
VerHelst of West Liberty and Leland VerHelst and his
wife, Norma, of Otley, Iowa; his grandchildren, Kari,
Jacob, Jennifer, Jackie and Ryan; and many nieces,
nephews and friends.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; a sister,
Virginia; six step-brothers; and two step-sisters.
