Irene M. Katter

KLEMME - Irene M. Katter, age 84, of Klemme, died Monday (Feb. 25, 2008) in Klemme, following a courageous four-year battle with cancer surrounded by the love and care of her family.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 29, at Klemme United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paddy Druhl will be officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Andrews Funeral Home, 528 East Main St., Klemme, and one hour prior to services at the church Friday.

Memorials are suggested to Klemme United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.

Irene Marie Becker, the daughter of Frederick and Elsie (Josten) Becker, was born Oct. 19, 1943, on her parents' farm in Ell Township. She attended rural country school through the eighth grade and then graduated salutatorian of her class in 1941 from Klemme High School.

Irene was united in marriage to Cecil B. Katter on Nov. 28, 1943, by the Rev. Grosshuesch at Klemme. Their union was blessed with four children, Lynn C., Noel, Marla and Murray.

Following their marriage they farmed and raised Holstein cattle for a number of years and then in 1951 moved to Oregon where Cecil was in the lumber business with his brothers until 1955, at which time they returned to farm in rural Clear Lake. They eventually returned to operate the family farm in rural Klemme and settle where Irene lived for all but approximately four years of her life. The farm celebrated status as a Century Farm in 1993 and continues to remain in ownership of the family today.

Irene was a life-long homemaker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and partner in the operation of the farm. She and Cecil were dedicated and diligent leaders in the region, state and national Holstein Growers Associations. They had been in the registered Holstein business from 1961-81 as partners in the farm and then following Cecil's death in October 1981, Irene continued in the business until 1984. Irene's participation in the Holstein area of agriculture was extensive and not limited to just raising them. She had shown cattle on the local, state and national levels. Her leadership roles also included membership in the State Holstein Ladies Auxiliary and numerous other entities, as well as organization of state picnics and other gatherings. She had traveled to many of the Central National Hostein Shows in Madison, Wis.

In addition to raising her family and helping with the many farming tasks, Irene had worked as a dietician at the nursing home in Garner, and with Sheryll Klessel's catering business for a number of years.

Irene also found time to give unselfishly in various roles in her church including playing piano, marimba and organ for church services and youth programs. Her musical talents were well known in the area and enjoyed by many people who were privileged to hear the music and emotion flow from her finger tips. She had also shared her gift of music on a regional level at area care center events, community festivities, state contests and played nationally, including Soldier Field in Chicago. Irene gave of her time at the church through her participation in UMW, church circles, and on the church ladies luncheon committees.

Irene's passions were many and included active leadership in the 4-H organization and membership in the Klemme Grandmother's Club. She was an avid gardner, raising wonderful strawberries, beautiful gladiolas and other produce. She loved to can and was a wonderful cook and baker. Her family and friends will miss the wonderful aromas and tantalizing tastes that came from Irene's kitchen. They will reflect fondly on the memory of Irene's delectable made- from-scratch peach and apple pies and her mouth watering chocolate chip cookies. Irene was an accomplished seamstress making many clothes including her daughter's bridesmaid's dresses.

Irene had a kind place in her heart for her horses and loved her cats. She looked forward to any activity that included times spent in the presence of family and especially looked forward to shopping excursions which almost always required a side trek for a slice of her favorite pie. Irene loved to attend the state fair and had done so nearly every year since the 1960s. A favorite pastime at the fair included taking her grandchildren on the mini-train rides.

Those who will miss Irene's presence in their lives include her children and their families, Lynn C. Katter and his wife, Donna, and their daughters, Melissa and Allison, of New York; Noel Katter and his wife, Margaret, and their children, Miekka and John, of Menlo, Iowa; Marla Hadacek and husband, Bob, and their son, Ben, of Klemme; and Murray Katter and his wife, Marcia, and their daughter, Emilee, Ankeny; also four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Cecil B. Katter, on Oct. 19, 1981.
