Robert A. Brown

MASON CITY - Robert A. Brown, 87, of Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to the Robert A. Brown Memorial Fund.

Robert Archer Brown was born May 4, 1920, in Sutherland, Iowa, the son of Columbus O. and Carrie D. (Archer) Brown. He attended schools in Sutherland until moving to Rockwell at the age of 12 and graduated from Mason City High School in 1938. After high school he worked on the family farm until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1941. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945.

After his return he was married in 1946 to Dorothy Bisgrove in Mason City. Bob farmed his entire life. He also worked at Decker's and also the sugar beet plant part time through the years.

He enjoyed going dancing with his wife, playing golf, playing cards and traveling. He enjoyed going south for three weeks every year in the winter. He also enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was a member of the VFW in Mason City and the North Iowa Co-op. He also served on the boards of the Farmer Co-op Gas and Oil and also the Milk Producers. He also was a long-time active member of First United Methodist Church.

Robert is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Mason City; two children, Janan K. Schreiner and husband, Mike, of Deephaven, Minn., and Mark Brown of Mason City; grandchildren, Joshua Schreiner and Andreea Schreiner of Deephaven, Minn., Jake, Clint, Avery, Tony and Scottie Brown of Mason City; sisters, Mary Ellen Johnson of Marionville, Mo., and Barbara Boggs of Apache Junction, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Elaine Brown of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and two brothers.

Jane DeEtte Davison

Jane DeEtte Davison, 93, formerly of Clarion and currently of Boone, passed away Thursday (Feb. 14, 2008) at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone. She had been a resident at the home since March 2004

She was born on Dec. 23, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of James E. and Alice R. (Fisk) Williams.

On July 28, 1937, she married Robert L. "Bob" Davison at First Congregational Church in Mason City.

Jane graduated from Mason City High School in 1932, Mason City Junior College in 1934 and received her bachelor of arts in business in 1936 from Grinnell College.

She an avid sports fan following the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes, liked to spend time at the cottage on Crosslake, Minn., and enjoyed being with her friends and family.

She was a member of UCC Congregational Church in Clarion; PEO Chapter FS; AAUW and was awarded 2004 Woman of the Year; American Legion Auxiliary; I-Club; Kensington Club, and was an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club.

Her parents; husband, Bob; a daughter, Lynne Oberg; a granddaughter, Amy Sprecher; two great-grandsons, James and Dane Sprecher; a sister, Ruth Paschal; and an infant brother preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Diana Weddell and her husband, Jim, and Sue Snider and her husband, Jim, all of Boone; a son-in-law, Art Oberg of Burnsville, Minn.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb, 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Boone with Dr. Richard Harken officiating.

Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City with the Rev. Patti Aurand officiating.

Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Boone with the family present during that time to greet friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be given to the Wright Medical Foundation of Clarion Foundation for Boone Area Humane Society; or the Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

BRITT - Vincent Joseph Kopacek, 96, of Britt, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Vincent Joseph Kopacek will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with the Rev. Brian Dellaert and the Rev. Jerry Kopacek officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, with a scriptural wake service at 5 p.m. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Diane Lucille Fiala  

CLEAR LAKE - Diane Lucille Fiala, 51, of Clear Lake, went to her heavenly home Friday (Feb. 15, 2008) after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 19) at the Church of Christ, 3493 Eagle Ave., Fertile, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.

Diane Lucille Fiala was born Sept. 29, 1956, at Offutt Air Force Base, Bellvue, Neb., a daughter of Dean and Beverly (Pitkin) Krieger. Raised in an Air Force family, Diane was baptized in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1968

Diane was a 1975 graduate of Forest City High School, Forest City, where she was involved in the girl's glee choir, concert choir, a member of the homecoming royalty court, and was a varsity cheerleader.

She married Tim Abrams in June 1976 and to this union a son, Alan, was born. Diane worked at Winnebago Industries, Forest City, for 17 years as the word processing supervisor.

She was united in marriage to Joe Fiala on Aug. 29, 1987, at Estes Park, Colo. In 1992 she began working with her husband, Joe, at their business, Fiala Office Products, in Mason City.

Diane enjoyed crocheting, playing the piano, and family gatherings at their cabin on Clear Lake.

She was a member of Quaker House Church, Mason City.

Diane accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a very young age and her personal relationship with her Lord Jesus Christ was very important to her. Her greatest desire was to bring honor and glory to God through her life. Diane viewed her illness as an opportunity to witness to others about the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and she knew that he was working through her, to reach others.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joe Fiala, Clear Lake; a daughter, Jennifer (Shaun) Krachmer, Austin, Minn.; two sons, Alan (Camille) Abrams, Lakeville, Minn., Lonny Fiala and his friend, Kelly Nelson, Mason City; six grandchildren, Cory, Talon and Kya, Austin, Minn., Tishan, Bryce and Tristan, Lakeville, Minn.; her father, Dean Krieger, Forest City; twin brother, David (Unhui) Krieger, Springfield, Va.; brother, Daryl (Tamera) Krieger, Forest City; a sister, Debra (Timothy) Nelson, Forest City; mother in-law, Gladys Fiala, Mason City; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (David) Hegvedt, Austin, Texas, Connie (Dennis) Vanderpol, Urbandale, Kathy (Barnie) Clark, Clive; brother in-law, Frank (Emily) Fiala; and a large group of nieces and nephews whom she held close to her heart.

She will be welcomed into heaven by her paternal grandparents, Irvin, Grace and Blanche Krieger; maternal grandparents, Milo and Lucille Pitkin; her mother, Beverly Krieger; father in-law, Merrill Fiala, and a grandson, William J. Fiala.

Vincent Joseph Kopacek  

BRITT - Vincent Joseph Kopacek, 96, of Britt, passed away Thursday (Feb. 14, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Vincent Joseph Kopacek will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with the Rev. Brian Dellaert and the Rev. Jerry Kopacek officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held today from 2 to 5 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. West in Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church. A scriptural wake service will be held at 5 p.m.

Vincent, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Kudej Kopacek, was born April 10, 1911, on the family farm near Britt. He attended country school at Liberty Township and helped on the family farm.

On Jan. 31, 1933, Vincent was united in marriage with Rose Cecilia Rayhons at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Following their marriage they rented the Kudej farm west of Duncan. In 1939, they purchased a farm in Erin Township where they built a new home and raised their family. In 1975, they moved into Britt. In their retirement Rose and Vince spent time helping on the farm, traveling and visiting their children.

Vince loved bowling and playing cards, especially his numerous games of 65 with Jim Ryburn, Clarence Seebeck, other friends and family, and 500 with the Senior Citizens. Vince had a great love for horses and had never missed a Britt Draft Horse Show in 26 years. He loved playing golf, which he didn't begin playing until age 65, his Minnesota Twins, ice cream and Rose's cooking and baking.

Vince was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Catholic Workmen. He was active in the community and for many years served as director of the country school in Erin Township which was on the corner of their farm. He was on the Board of Directors of the First State Bank of Britt for several years and also the Britt Farmers Co-op Board.

Vincent is survived by eight children, Doris Hempe of Britt, Shirley (Dr. Thomas) Carson of Camarillo, Calif., Donald (Kay) Kopacek of Britt, Roger (Mary) Kopacek of Britt, Vincent, Jr. (Janice) Kopacek of Ankeny, Carl Kopacek of Portland, Ore., Ted (Cindy) Kopacek of Maple Grove, Minn., and Vicki (Tom) Bueker of Bettendorf; 27 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vivian Formanek of Britt and Marie Brcka of Britt; numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose on April 19, 2006; granddaughter, Liz Ann Hempe; grandson, Jeff Kopacek; two great-grandsons, Tate and McCoy Nedved; brothers, Arnold and Francis, and sisters, Helen and Evelyn, at young ages; brother, Raymond and sisters Mildred Wellik, Lillian Chizek, Agnes Rayhons, and Blanche Paca.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

MASON CITY - Dorothy L. Tagesen, 89, formerly of the Manor, 302 Second St. N.E., Apt. No. 424 in Mason City, died Saturday, (Feb. 16, 2008) at Avera Medical Center in Marshall, Minn.

Dana M. Davis was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 25, 1924, the daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Duffek) Donovan. She received her education in Chicago, graduating from high school at the age of 16. She attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, studying in the College of Pharmacy. When World War II broke out, she left school and worked for Eli Lilly & Company to support the war effort preparing drugs for the soldiers.

She met Neal Davis while attending Purdue and on February 13, 1943, they were married. Neal received his degree in Civil Engineering and started his career. The family made their home in Ottumwa, Iowa, for a time before coming to Forest City in 1957, where Neal worked for Gjellefald Construction.

Dana was a stay-at-home mom until after her husband passed away in 1968 when she began working as a bookkeeper for Gjellefald Construction. When the company closed, she began working in the Purchasing Department at Winnebago Industries where she worked until her retirement many years later.

Dana was an involved member of her community and gave her time freely. She served on the Oakland Cemetery Board and the Forest City Library Board. She was a gifted artist and enjoyed painting backdrops for theater productions and store windows. She was in several bridge clubs over the years and had a great time with her "Birthday Club" group of friends. She loved to decorate and her home was proof of her talent and was featured in Forest City's Tour of Homes in 1997. She was a voracious reader and an exceptional cook - "to love you was to feed you" and she did it wonderfully. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Forest City.

Dana is survived by her children and their spouses, Madonna (Jim) Haigh of Plano, Texas; Kathe (David) Schwalen of Minneapolis, Minn.; Dan (Sheila) Davis of Forest City; Pat (Tammy) Davis of Austin, Texas; Mark (Laurie) Davis of Algona; 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a sister, Margaret McCabe of Lafayette, Indiana.

Dana was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Neal and a granddaughter, Nikki Davis.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the Forest City Public Library at 115 East L St., Forest City IA 50436.

RUDD - Norma June Krause, 81 of Rudd, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice In Patient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Rudd United Methodist Church in Rudd with Pastors Jim Turner and Wendy Johannesen, officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rudd.

Mason City- Sophia K. Lagios, 102 of 110 N. Jefferson, Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 15, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1131 Second St. S.W., Mason City, with Father Joseph Mirowski, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where a Trisagion service will be held at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow evening. Further visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Sophia was a wonderful mother and aunt and a faithful wife. She cared for her children, niece, husband, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sophia was born on Jan. 6, 1906, at the small village of Lygia, Greece, south of Corinth, a daughter of Ioannis and Paraskevi Kolokethas. She came to the U.S. in 1931 by way of Ellis Island on the SS Saturnia Immigration Cruise Ship. Married by arrangement, to Mason City businessman, Peter N. Lagios, who owned United Cigar Store, where the future City National Bank renovation will be done as part of the Frank Lloyd Wright Hotel restoration project.

Sophia helped her husband in his business for years, raised her family, and later worked in the kitchen at the former Park Hospital in downtown Mason City.

In 1931, pregnant with twins George and Nicholas, she made her voyage from Greece. Her third son John was born in 1948.

She was the last surviving charter member of the Daughters of Penelope, a Greek woman's benevolent society. Organized in Mason City in 1935, it is named for the Greek goddess Penelope, the goddess of weaving life's stories, and the wife of Ulysses. Her Lagios family immigration certificate is framed and listed on the Ellis Island memorial Wall of Honor, New York, New York.

Surviving good times and bad in Greece, Sophia obtained her U.S. citizenship in 1960. Her greatness will be eternally missed but not forgotten.

Sophia is survived by her sons, George (Marilyn) Lagios, Clear Lake; John Lagios, Mason City; daughter in-law, Marlene Lagios, Mahtomedi, Minn.; grandchildren, Jim (Cindy) Lagios, Albany, N.Y.; Gregory (Melissa) Lagios, Minneapolis; Nicole (Jason) Hicks, Minneapolis; Peter Lagios, Clear Lake; Melina Lagios, Iowa City; great-grandchildren, Megan, Alexander, Sophia, Collin, Andrew, Aaron, Elena, Isabella, and Brooklyn; a niece, Voula Bennett, Des Moines; great-niece and nephew, Maria Bennett and Steve Bennett, Des Moines; very good family friends, Jim and Gloria Helgeson, Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; son, Nicholas; brother, Dr. Takis; sisters, Stavroula, Maria, and Eleni; great-grandson, Zaid G. Lagios; and her parents and grandparents in Greece, who were also centegenarians.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m tomorrow at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile with Lay Minister David Halverson officiating. Interment will be in the Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service tomorrow at the church.

LeNora was born on June 22, 1915, on the family farm rural Joice the daughter of Nels E. and Mary (Suby) Fjeld.

She graduated from Fertile High School in 1934 and then attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she obtained her teachers certification. She taught in rural school.

LeNora married Lawrence Ouverson on June 22, 1938, at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice. They farmed rural Fertile area and she continued to live on the farm after her husband's death in 1950. In 1965, she moved to Forest City, and later Clear Lake, and in 1973 to her present home.

She enjoyed playing Rook, croquet, hide the thimble with the grandkids, going on picnics and visiting with friends and neighbors. Her visitors enjoyed her good homemade bread and pastries, especially her pies. At Christmas time they especially enjoyed her good Lefsa, Krumkaka and many of her cookies. She was the person who made the Roomegrot, and did much of the other preparation necessary when the whole Field family gathered at the family farm for Christmas Eve. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.

She was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church.

LeNora is survived by three sons: Jerry Ouverson and his wife Donna, Fertile; Paul Ouverson and his wife Carol, Boone; and Rodney "Hap" Ouverson and his wife MaryAnn, Springfield, Minn.; twelve grandchildren: Jeffrey Ouverson and his wife Dixie, Jon Ouverson and his wife Lori, Julie Ouverson, Jodie Pick and her husband Marc, Jamie Ouverson, Anne Marie Bice and her husband Dan, Matthew Ouverson, Chad Ouverson and his wife Vidya, Michelle Peterson and her husband Tom, Ryan Ward, Jason Ward and his wife Nicole and Andrew Ouverson and eleven great-grandchildren: Kara, Kaitlyn, Michala, Corrigan, Kjersten, Nolan, Priya, Chandler, Lauren, Morgan and Carlyn, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Ronald, five brothers, Edwin, Lloyd, Carl, John and Raymond, and one sister Laura.

Dorothy Lorraine was born in Burchinal on July 31, 1918, the daughter of John H. and Frances M. (Bahnsen) Bahrens. She attended and graduated high school in Mason City.

On Dec. 2, 1942, Dorothy was united in marriage to Henry C. Tagesen in Mason City. Dorothy lived most all of her life in the Mason City area except for six years spent in Rogers, Arkansas.

She had been a farm wife for 30 years and spent nine years employed as an optometric assistant with Warne-Frye-Heston Optometrists in Mason City. Dorothy was also an instructor at North Iowa Area Community College for two years, helping to teach and start the Optometric Assistant Program.

Organizations she had been active throughout her life included the AARP, Women of the Moose, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the Grandmothers' Club, all of Mason City.

Dorothy was an avid gardener, enjoyed canning, knitting and embroidery. She passed the time reading fiction, playing cards, solving crossword puzzles and special memories with her dogs, T.J. and Hoss. In her final years while living with Mick and Dania Tagesen she specially enjoyed time spent with her birds "Sunshine," "Pretty Bird" and "Princess."

Dorothy is survived by her grandson, Michael J. "Mick" and (Dania) Tagesen, Jr., of Marshall, Minnesota. Additionally, she is survived by Amy S. Rippentrop and great grandson, Caleb Rippentrop, both of Mason City. She is also survived by her son, Michael J. Tagesen, Sr.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry C. Tagesen in 1996 and one brother, Paul Richard Bahrens.

Words cannot express the kind, compassionate and tender care given to Dorothy by Dania who cared for her diligently in her final years. Thank You.

Norma Krause was born on May 2, 1926, to Berl and Grace (Wagner) Stalker in Rudd, Iowa.

Norma graduated from Rudd public school and then the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

She married James Wesley Krause on Jan. 22, 1945, in Lyle, Minn.

Norma was a country schoolteacher for one year, and then was a homemaker, bookkeeper and ran a painting crew for her husband Jim's business, Rudd Lumber and Hardware. She was also a rural mail carrier for the

Post Office in Rudd and Nora Springs for 18 years and retired in 1989.

An active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church, UMW Women's Group, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Rural Mail Carrier Association, Norma also volunteered at the Nora Springs Nursing Home on the Resident Advisory Committee. She loved to play bridge with her friends and cards with her children and grandchildren. Norma liked to watch her children and grandchildren in school activities and was known as "Grandma Norma" to lots of children.

Norma is survived by her daughters: Barbara (James) Braun, Forest City, Brenda Krause, Rudd, Becky (Gary) Michels, LeSueur, Minn., and Bonny (Harlan) Derr, Rudd; seven grandchildren: Tamara (Randy) Barnard, New Virginia, Iowa, Stacy (Liz) Braun, Omaha, Neb., Michelle (Mark) English, West Des Moines, Jessica Michels, LeSueur, Minn., Tricia (Andrew) Hultengren, LeSueur, Minn., Christopher (Chelsie) Derr, Titonka, and Travis Derr, Rudd; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters: Audrey (Hank) Gorzynski, Rudd, Donna (Dominic) Grasso, Olathe, Kan., a brother, Edgar (Donna) Stalker, Minneapolis, Minn., and a sister-in-law, Vera Krause, Rockford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim, in 1996; a great granddaughter, Rachel Barnard; brothers, Steven Stalker, Rodney Stalker, Lyle Stalker, and Charles Stalker; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Stalker.

CLEAR LAKE - Charlotte McEnelly Swartz, Oakwood Care Center, 400 West Highway 18, Clear Lake, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2008) at the age of 96 years five months and 29 days.

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa, 206 Highway 69 N., Forest City IA 50436.

Charlotte was born on Aug. 20, 1911, at Lake Mills, Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Garfield McEnelly and Myrtle Mildred Myers.

Charlotte graduated from high school at Hanlontown, then attended commercial art school in Chicago. While in Chicago, she was an usher in legitimate theater. She became an accomplished artist and many of her pictures are displayed in several states. Her paintings received many awards in Iowa and elsewhere. Among other things, she lettered names of those who served in World War II on Honor Roll boards throughout North Iowa. She was described in an article in the Mason City Globe Gazette as a "traveling woman painter."

Charlotte worked at numerous occupations while living in Hanlontown, including cooking at the local restaurant and in the school lunch program. She and her husband were very active in the Boy Scout program. She enjoyed raising flowers and flowers from her garden brightened many weddings. For many years in the 1940s and '50s she was a correspondent from Hanlontown for the Clear Lake Mirror- Reporter.

Following the death of her husband, she attended nursing school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, graduating with an LPN degree. She worked in pediatrics at University Hospitals until her retirement. She then returned to Mason City.

She is survived by a daughter, M. Jeanne Sears, of Madison, Wisconsin, two sons, Samuel Bealor (Charlotte Francis) and Daniel Douglas (Shirley Orcutt), both of Clear Lake; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann (Kruse) of Iowa City; 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Bealor Swartz, whom she married on Oct. 14, 1929, at Crown Point, Ind.; her parents; one son, David; one grandson; and two great-granddaughters. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and William; and one sister, Mary Ardis.

WILLIAMSBURG - Sally Lupe Gallo, age 77, of Williamsburg, died on Monday (Feb. 18, 2008) at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 22) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Presiding will be Fr. Joseph Roost. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

On Nov. 21, 1951, she was united in marriage to Dr. Julian J. Gallo in Mason City. They lived in Mason City until moving to Williamsburg in 1960. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg.

She is survived by three daughters: Chris (Dr. Mike) Engel of Glen Allen, Va., Cindy Gallo of Coralville, Rita Gallo of North Liberty; four sons: Tom (Susan) Gallo of Grinnell, Rick Gallo of San Antonio, Texas, Tony (Karla) Gallo of Grinnell and Andy (Susan) Gallo of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren: Jason Engel, Sean Engel, Jonathan Gallo, Christopher Gallo, Ben Gallo, Alex Gallo, Brianna Gallo, Julian Gallo, Olivia Gallo and Madison Gallo; a brother, Isop Torres of Mason City; and a sister, Minnie Gonzales of San Jose, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1992; two brothers: Jessie and Joe; and four sisters: Carmen, Anita, Inez and Isabel.

MASON CITY - Harriet Johnson, 83, of Mason City died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. Memorial services will be held at a later date with inurnment in the Our Saviour's Lutheran Cemetery in Kiester, Minn., also held at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the Harriet Johnson Memorial Fund.

Harriet was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Kiester, Minn., the daughter of Olaf and Anna (Wittman) Hermundstad. She graduated from Kiester High School as valedictorian in 1942. She also attended the Minneapolis School of Business, where she received executive secretary education. Harriet worked for Allied Mills for 25 years.

She married John A. Johnson on Feb. 1, 1946, in Sacramento, Calif.

Harriet was a past officer for the National Secretaries Association. She enjoyed planting flowers in the spring, taking care of the house, cooking and keeping up on politics. She also enjoyed visiting with family, friends and neighbors. Harriet's pets were also very important to her.

Harriet is survived by her daughter, Claudia Johnson of Mason City; two sisters: Mildred Hermundstad of Mason City and Nona Skyles of Cedar Falls; four nieces and nephews: Mark Skyles and wife, Carmen, of Waterloo, Sally Cox and husband, Greg, and their family of Waterloo, Jane Flanigan and husband, Tom, of Arizona and Mary Skyles of Arizona. She is also survived by her beloved pets, Angus and Callie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 2005; her son, Timmy, in 1963; and her brother, Earl Hermundstad, in 2007.

BELMOND - Jennie Lieuwen, age 98, of Belmond, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2008) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services for Jennie Lieuwen will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Pastor Mark Pluff officiating. Burial will take place in the Amsterdam cemetery east of Goodell.

Visitation for Jennie Lieuwen will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S., Belmond. There will be no visitation at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family wishes memorials be given.

Jennie, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Zell-Stadtlander) Albers, was born Aug. 26, 1909, near Belmond. Jennie grew up in the Klemme area where she attended country school.

Jennie was united in marriage to George Lieuwen on Dec. 23, 1931, at the Reformed Church parsonage in Klemme. Together with George, Jennie farmed and raised their family near Belmond. They moved to the home place in 1943. Jennie lived there until moving to the Belmond Health Care Center in 2006.

Jennie is survived by her daughters, Shirley Fulton of Belmond and Alice Bryant of Edina, Minn.; a grandson, Michael S. Bryant and wife, Janice, of Ames; two great grandchildren: Michael J. Bryant and wife, Lisa, of New Hope, Minn., and Diana Kain and husband, Matt, of Iowa City; two great-great-grandchildren: Charlie and Emma Bryant; three step-grandchildren: Jeff Calentine and wife, Carissa, of Omaha, Neb., Christin Calentine of Winona, Minn., and David Calentine of Ames; a brother Ed Albers and wife, Barb, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Mary Jasperson of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, in 1986; a son-in-law, Jack Fulton; a sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Robert Churchouse; sister, Johanna, and three brothers, Fred, Alvin and John.

CLEAR LAKE- Clifton W. "Cliff" Randall, 82, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. There are no services planned.

Cliff was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Mason City, the son of Gilbert S. and Helen L. (Fistler) Randall. He graduated from Mason City High School and Iowa State Teachers College, UNI, in Cedar Falls.

Cliff was a self-employed businessman in Mason City, working in the insurance industry.

Cliff is survived by a brother, Ray Randall and wife, Fran, of Mason City; sister, Dorine D. Deets of Mason City; several nephews, cousins and their families.

Cliff is preceded in death by his parents.

MASON CITY - Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Raymond, 91, of 905 First St. S.E., died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Christ, 710 N. Kentucky, with Pastor Alan Sheldon officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. At the request of Betty, the body will be cremated. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

A funeral Mass for Eleanor Shepley will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, where the rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a vigil Scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.
