EMMONS, Minn. - Darlene May Hacker, 77, of Emmons, Minn., died Wednesday (Jan. 30, 2008) at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Lake Mills Synod Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Karl Hermanson officiating. Burial will take place at Lime Creek Synod Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 1 at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Burneil "Punk" Jones

ROWAN - Burneil "Punk" Jones, 77, of Rowan, died Wednesday (Jan. 30, 2008) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 at the United Church of Rowan with Pastor Nancy Hofmeister officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

Robert J. "Bob" Kolthoff

CHARLES CITY - Robert "Bob" J. Kolthoff, 50, of 100 Spriggs St. in Charles City died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2008) at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Interment will be 1:30 p.m. in the New Hampton City Cemetery in New Hampton.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City.

DUMONT - Christina Jessie Korte, 89, of Dumont, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Gilbert "Gib" LaCoste

CHARLES CITY - Gilbert "Gib" LaCoste, 85, of Charles City, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2008) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services for Gilbert LaCoste will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, with Pastor Gary Van Wert, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Visitation will continue an hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Gilbert William LaCoste was born Aug. 18, 1922, at Charles City, the son of William and Emily (Gallup) LaCoste. He attended school in Rudd. In 1942, he joined the Navy and served 3 1/2 years in the United States Navy Air Force.

On Feb. 14, 1981, he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Esser at Osage. Gilbert farmed from the time he returned from the Navy until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City and the American Legion.

His interests included farming, gardening, camping, canning, fishing, talking about the old days and his time in the service.

Living family members include his wife, Betty LaCoste, of Charles City; three step-children, Carol (Larry) Schriever, of Floyd, Michael (Sherry) Winters, of Osage, and Keith (Michelle) Warner, of Rockford; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Jean in 1980; one sister, Joyce Kleen; and three brothers, Donald LaCoste, Raymond LaCoste and Charles LaCoste.

Robert M. LaVallee

MASON CITY - Robert M. LaVallee, 66, of Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2008) at Mercy Medical Health Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave. with Pastor Miles Grismore officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Faith Baptist Church.

Robert Monroe LaVallee was born Oct. 11, 1941 in Sacramento, Calif., the son of Louis and Ella (Sheffield) LaVallee. He attended school in San Diego and graduated from Waterman High School in Ione, Calif.

Bob accepted Christ as his personal savior when he was 17 years old. Bob met his wife Rosie while in California and they later where married on April 25, 1970. To this union two children were born, Robert and Yvette.

They moved to Waterloo in 1980 where the family lived until moving to Mason City in 1994 where he went to work for the Petal Shoppe in Clear Lake until his health started to fail in 2006.

Bob enjoyed reading, fishing, camping and gardening. Bob and Rosie always had a large garden of flowers in their backyard and Bob was especially fond of roses. He took great pride every summer planting and tending to his flower garden. He was involved with the Jackson-Perkins as a Rose Tester.

Bob enjoyed reading the Bible and being involved in his church, he was also proud of his country and was very patriotic. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his granddaughter, Megan.

Bob is survived by his wife, Rosie LaVallee, of Mason City; children, Robert LaVallee, of Mason City, and Yvette LaVallee, of Waterloo; granddaughter, Megan LaVallee, of Mason City.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, John LaVallee.

Wilma Kruckenberg Scholl

ROCKWELL - Wilma E. Kruckenberg Scholl, 92, of Rockwell, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2008) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald J. Bolinger, officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 203 Maple St. in Sheffield.

Wilma E. Kruckenberg Scholl was born on a farm near Hampton in Franklin County on Oct. 2, 1915 to Elwood and Ethel (Morehouse) Walker. She graduated from Sheffield High School in 1934. On March 5, 1935, Wilma was united in marriage with Arnold Kruckenberg. She was baptized and confirmed May 19, 1935, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sheffield.

Wilma and Arnold raised two children, Larry Kruckenberg, of Rockwell and Karen Stadtlander Ulrich, of Armstrong. They farmed east of Sheffield and north of Dougherty until 1970 when they retired and built a home in Rockwell. Arnold passed away in April of 1971. On June 6, 1974, Wilma married Victor (Bud) Scholl of Rockwell.

Always willing to help, Wilma taught Sunday School at Sheffield for two years and after moving to Rockwell, she served as president of ELCW and Rebecca and Martha Circles. She also served as president of the Hostess Committee and served on the Altar Guild.

She loved to work in her garden and with her flowers as well as spending time with her family and friends.

Wilma was preceded in death by her first husband, Arnold; her parents; five sisters: Clare Alden, Frances Brown, Cleone Miller, Florence Mahn and Prudence Faye in infancy.

She is survived by her husband: Bud Scholl, of Rockwell; son: Larry (Deanna) Kruckenberg, of Rockwell; daughter, Karen (Bob) Ulrich, of Armstrong; four grandchildren: Kurt (Dina) Kruckenberg, of Omaha, Neb.; Kandee Bartholomew, of Mason City; Denise (Steve) Jensen, of Ringsted; Dawn (Dean) Looft, of Armstrong; three stepgrandchildren: Janiece, Jodie and Scott; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Kathryn Foell; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Suzanne Ruth Falt

Suzanne Ruth (Hagen) Falt died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2008) at the home of her daughter in Tucson, Ariz., following a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at her daughter's home today.

Suzanne was born in Chicago, Ill.,

on July 7, 1938. While she was still quite young, the family moved to Green Bay, Wis., and later to Mason City.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1956 and received her degree in nursing from Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1959.

She married Robert Falt in June 1960 and they eventually made their home in Cedar Rapids. Her nursing career spanned the years of 1960 to 1993. She had made her home in Tucson for the past four years.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2006.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Will) Johnson; and two granddaughters, Jessica and Madison; a sister, Marilyn (Cal) Goeders of Midland, Mich.; her twin sister, Joanne Roberts of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and sister-in-law, Sandra (Loren) Huber of Mason City. Additionally, she is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

She was loved for her gentle nature and ability to write beautiful poetry. Her family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice Services - most especially Rod, Anna and Steve. Burneil "Punk" Jones

ROWAN - Burneil "Punk" Jones, 77, of Rowan, died Wednesday (Jan. 30, 2008) at Belmond Medical Center.

Burneil, the son of Earl and Cecil Clare (Brannan) Jones, was born June 11, 1930, on the family farm north of Dows. He attended country school and later Rowan Schools, graduating from Rowan High School in 1948. Following graduation, Burneil farmed with his father and brothers.

On Oct. 8, 1950, Burneil was united in marriage to Darline Osborn. The couple farmed and lived near Rowan, Coulter and north of Dows. They moved into Rowan in 1982 but continued to farm until 1994 when they retired.

Burneil was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. They were the apples of his eye. He was very involved in Rowan where he was a past member the Lions Club, former mayor of Rowan and a current City Council member.

He was very proud of the completion of the new library. He held various offices in the United Church of Rowan and the Wright County Landfill. He also volunteered at the Belmond Hospital.

Burneil enjoyed farming with Randy and Eugene Frohling and working at Aldrich Tree Farm.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Darline; son Gene and wife, Karyl, of Huxley; daughter, Susan and husband, Doug Anderson, of Long Grove; and four grandchildren: Emily Rockafellow (Ryan) of North Liberty, Ben Anderson of Bettendorf, Chelsea Anderson of Waverly, and Nathan Jones of Huxley.

Burneil is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; one sister and one son, Burneil Jr.

William W. O'Dell

MASON CITY - William W. O'Dell, 77, of Mason City, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Upon his wishes his body was cremated and there will be no memorial services. Inurnment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the William W. O'Dell Memorial Fund in care of the family, 2211 S. Madison Ave. Mason City, IA 50401.

William Wallace O'Dell was born, July 28, 1930, in Mason City, the son of Fred and Violet (Dixon) O'Dell. He was born and raised in Mason City and attended Mason City High School.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

He was married to Donna Hall on Oct. 31, 1952, in Albert Lea, Minn. He worked for Northwestern Portland Cement plant for 32 years until retiring in 1984. In 1985 he moved to Lake Havasu, Ariz., until moving back to Mason City in 1999.

He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

William was survived by his wife, Donna L. O'Dell of Mason City; sons, William A. O'Dell and wife, Kathy, of Mason City, and Robert M. O'Dell and wife, Linda, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Patricia Bull and husband, Willis, of Mason City and Joan Sharp and husband, Daryl, of Vancouver, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Fred O'Dell Jr.

MASON CITY - Norma J. Reynolds, 77, of 2038 Hunters Ridge, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Curt Arthur Schmidt

Curt Arthur Schmidt passed away peacefully on Jan. 16, 2008, with his wife at his side at Havasu Regional Medical Center in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Curt was born on March 3, 1935, to Curt August Schmidt and Alice Wolff of Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1945, the family moved to Balboa, Calif., where he grew up.

In 1952, Curt joined the United States Navy where he served his country proudly for eight years. He received the Good Conduct, United Nations, National Defense and Korean medals. After his discharge he enrolled at UCLA and later worked as an electrical engineer for Rocketdyne. He was also employed for several years with The Ralph M. Parsons Co. Some extensive projects he worked on were in the Middle East.

He became an avid reader while in the Navy and over the years acquired an extensive library. He spent many hours with his beloved books, and tried to instill his love for books with friends and family. Throughout his life, Curt and Norma enjoyed helping care for the grandchildren at different stages of their lives. In later years, he especially looked forward to their visits.

Curt moved to Lake Havasu City in 2006 from Southern California. He looked forward to a time of serenity with his wife, Norma, and visits from son, Steve, and family and daughter, Jennifer, and family.

Surviving are his loving wife of 45 years, Norma (nee Buffington); son, Steve (Angie) Schmidt of LaVerne, Calif.; and daughter, Jennifer (Darrell) Dillon of West Covina, Calif.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; four siblings; and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial was held 1 at p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

MASON CITY - D. Vaughn Solberg, 84, of 1513 Limestone Court, died Friday (Feb. 1, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. A flag folding ceremony will be conducted by members of Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, at a later date.

Robyn Ann (Pellett) Fortney

STOUGHTON, Wis. - Robyn Ann (Pellett) Fortney, age 40, of Stoughton, Wis., passed away on Sunday (Jan. 27, 2008) in Arena, Wis.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Gunderson Stoughton Funeral Home, Highway 51 North at Jackson St., Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family, who will establish a fund for her children's education.

Robyn was born on Jan. 31, 1967, in Richland Center, the daughter of Robert and Judith E. (Bock) Pellett. Robyn graduated from Mason City High School and attended Madison Area Technical College. She worked as a dental hygienist.

Robyn is survived by her children, Kristin Zieman of Madison, Brandon Zieman of Stoughton and Katie Fortney of Oregon; her father, Robert (Judith A.) Pellett of Arena; grandmother, Lorraine Bock of Richland Center; stepbrother, Ken (Tammy) Bridges of Durham, N.C.; stepsister, Jean Blong of Mason City; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Judith E.; brother, Geoffrey; and grandparents, Sidney Bock and Alene and Dale Pellett.

Phil was born March 11, 1940, in Seattle, Wash. He moved with his family to Minnesota and graduated from Tracy (Minn.) High School in 1958. He attended South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, S.D., graduating with a degree in civil engineering.

On June 10, 1961, he married LaDonna Jean Foster in Walnut Grove, Minn. He joined the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1962, starting his engineering career in Denison, Marengo and Council Bluffs before moving to Mason City in 1974. He retired from the DOT in 2002.

Phil was active in the River City Barbershop Chorus for more than 30 years and was honored as "Barbershopper of the Year" in 1987. He served several roles with the chorus, including president and most recently chorus librarian.

He was also a long-time member of St. James Lutheran Church and a friend of First Congregational Church. He enjoyed participating in the activities of the Saint James Saints and was also a member of the Mason City Noon Kiwanis.

He enjoyed music, reading, traveling, cooking, sports and, first and foremost, his family. He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, LaDonna, of Mason City; daughter, Colleen Fritz her husband, Scott, and son, Luke, of Cedar Rapids; son, Scott Hassenstab his wife, Mary Ellen Rogers, and their daughters, Cara, Nicole and Erin, of Hiawatha; daughter, Kelly Hidlebaugh and her children, Katie and Jake, of Marion; daughter, Lisa Hassenstab and her partner, Ryan Underwood, of Niles, Ill.; brother, Jerry Hassenstab and his wife, Nanette Straw, of Edmonds, Wash.; sister-in-law, Lani Hassenstab of Edmonds, Wash.; sister-in-law, LeOna Haase and her husband, Don, of Blue Earth, Minn; sister-in-law, Lori Bents and her husband, Mark, of Apple Valley, Minn.; eight nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, LeRoy Hassenstab; his mother, Mary McLean Hassenstab; and brother Paul Hassenstab.

Patricia "Pat" Mallaro

CHARLES CITY - Patricia "Pat" Mallaro, 69, of Charles City, died Friday (Feb. 1, 2008) at her home.

Pat had suffered from pulmonary hypertension since 2003.

A funeral Mass for Pat Mallaro will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Patricia Ann Gray Mallaro was born Oct. 1, 1938, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Leon and Anne (McDonough) Gray. She graduated in 1956 from St. Edmond High School in Fort Dodge and attended St. Mary's College in Omaha, Neb.

On Sept. 5, 1959, she was united in marriage to Dan Mallaro at Sacred Heart Church in Fort Dodge. In 1962 they moved to Charles City. Pat worked for 21 years as the secretary at Trinity United Methodist Church, retiring in 2002. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Michael's Circle and PEO Chapter CY. Pat also volunteered as a "Pink Lady" with the Floyd County Auxiliary Group and had served on the board of Hospice of North Iowa. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family, socializing and was a member of a number of card groups.

Living family members include her husband, Dan Mallaro of Charles City; three children, Brian (Rose) Mallaro of Medina, Minn., Mike (Traci) Mallaro of Cedar Falls and Karen (Brian) Yusko of Shaker Heights, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Jack, Kara, Hannah, Sophie, Kendall and Ava Mallaro, and Helen, Sam and Bridget Yusko; two brothers, Bob (Polly) Gray of Fort Dodge and Don Gray of Augusta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Sue Keiler of Lakeland, Fla.; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Mallaro of Fort Dodge and Tom Mallaro of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Jim Gray.

Born Daniel Vaughn Solberg on Oct. 7, 1923, at Mason City. Vaughn was the son of John J. and Jane W. (Connor) Solberg. He was united in marriage to Peggy Swed on Aug. 10, 1957, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Vaughn was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School, Dougherty, and attended Creighton University, Omaha, Neb. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific.

For over 40 years Vaughn owned and operated Solberg's Formal Wear, Mason City. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and especially his coffee buddies.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks, VFW and the Moose.

Vaughn is survived by his wife, Peggy Solberg, Mason City; his five favorite daughters, Mary (Bob) Isom, Vail, Colo., Anne Schneider, Mason City, Jane (Tony) Tatone, Sioux Falls, S.D., Kristin Solberg and Justin McVey, Des Moines, and Rita (Brian) Manwiller, Davenport; six grandchildren, Sarah Schneider, Maggie Tatone, Nicole Manwiller, Alex Tatone, Matt Schneider and Luke Manwiller.

Mae was born on June 2, 1914, in Nowata, Okla., the daughter of John and Lula (Payne) Cuvelier. She graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1932.

On May 25, 1937, she was united in marriage to Donald Turner in Nashua. The couple farmed west of Shell Rock until 1976 when they moved to town. Donald died on Jan. 23, 1997. Mae became a resident of the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in 2000.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling and spending time with her family. She was a longtime member of Unity Presbyterian Church, where she was involved in the many aspects of the church.

She is survived by her son, James Turner of Rockwell; three grandchildren, Keith Turner and his wife, Suzy, of Nashua, Kevin Turner and his wife, Dawn, of West Des Moines, and Karie Young and her husband, Steve, of Algona; four great-grandchildren, Nathan Turner, Ryan Turner, Ethan Young and Ashlin Young; and one sister-in-law, Doris Cuvelier.

Mae Margaret Twedt, the daughter of George Th. and Theresa Gerdes, was born Jan. 21, 1921, on a farm south of Woden. She graduated from Woden High School in 1938. Following high school, she worked at the Woden grocery store, and on Oct. 21, 1939, Mae was married to Mark L. Twedt at Britt. Shortly after their wedding they moved to southern California and worked in the aviation industry before returning to Woden, where Mark intended to take over the Gerdes family farm. However, Mark soon received his draft notice and instead worked on the Ben Aukes farm near Woden until he left for duty with the U.S. Army in the Philippine Islands in 1945.

Mae worked in the Woden School lunch program for many years until she retired. She also was active in many community organizations, such as St. John's Lutheran Church and the local American Legion Auxiliary. She lived a long and fulfilling life in Woden, enjoying embroidery, gardening, and helping others. She especially loved her grandchildren and enjoyed participating in their activities. In December 2004, she moved to Logan, Utah, to be closer to her immediate family.

She is survived by one son, Thomas Mark Twedt and his wife, Carla, of Logan, Utah; five grandchildren, Amber (Chad) Sampson of Tempe, Ariz., Nathan Twedt of Denver, Colo., Corey (Becky) Twedt, Devin (Jessica) Twedt, and Brady Twedt all of Logan, Utah; and seven great-grandchildren, with another on the way. She is also survived by a sister Dixie (James) Buns of Woden.

Ronald G. Woiwod

GARNER - Ronald G. Woiwod, 84, of Garner, died Wednesday (Jan. 30, 2008) at his home.

Ronald George Woiwod, the son of Otto and Lulu (Henschen) Woiwod, was born Jan. 2, 1924, on a farm east of Garner. He attended St. John's Parochial School northeast of Garner and graduated from Ventura High School in 1941. After high school, he worked as an auto mechanic in the North Iowa area. On Sept. 18, 1954, he married Mildred Harrison in Alabama. They later divorced. In 1963 his father, Otto, passed away. Ron then moved to the family farm east of Garner and took over the farming operation. Following his retirement from farming he moved into Garner. In June 2001 he married Lorraine Rooks in Clear Lake. Ron enjoyed playing cards and visiting with people.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was confirmed and served as an usher.

Ron is survived by his brother, Laurice "Pete" Woiwod and his wife, Billie, of Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Elaine Woiwod of Garner; stepdaughters, Connie Pals and her husband, Wayne, of Thornton and Valera Hovelson of Clear Lake; three nieces, Laurel McMahon and her husband, Jim, of Garner, Kris Juenger and her husband, Tom, of Garner and Beverly Kelck and her husband, Lynn, of West Union; and a nephew, Richard Woiwod and his wife, Sherry, of Fertile.

Arvin Lester Larson

WESLEY - Arvin Lester Larson, 79, of Wesley, died at his home on Feb. 2, 2008.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at the Evangelical Free Church in Wesley with the Rev. Jason Boomgarden officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Wesley.

Arvin Lester Larson was born on April 28, 1928, at Wesley, Iowa, to Lester and Berniece (Byro) Larson. Arvin attended country school and graduated from Wesley High School in 1946. He farmed with his father northwest of Wesley. On August 5, 1950, he was united in marriage to LaVon Higdon in Britt. Arvin continued to farm until 1993, when he retired and they moved to Wesley.

Arvin's life centered on his family, their activities and on his local community. Arvin was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church in Wesley. He was a loyal supporter of Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne athletics. He and LaVon enjoyed traveling and spending a few weeks in the warmer climates during the cold Iowa winters.

No one was a stranger to Arvin; he liked talking to everyone. His real love was farming and horses and his favorite seasons were planting and harvest.

Arvin died at his home in Wesley on Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at the age of 79.

His family includes his wife of 57 years, LaVon, of Wesley and five daughters: Mary Lou (1951-1954); Barbara Larson of Cedar Rapids, Diane and Larry Potter of Cedar Rapids, Danna and Britton Johnston of Pasadena, Calif., Jane and Eep Peuchen of Assaria, Kan.; and his son, Craig, and Julie Larson, of Wesley. His family also includes eight grandchildren: Laura and Travis Sheely of Amana, Iowa; Shannon Larson of Wesley; Len Mitchell of Swisher, Iowa; Benjamin (1990), Elizabeth, Rachel, Jonathon and Andrew Peuchen of Assaria, Kan.; and seven step-grandchildren: Tracy and Lance Ludwig; Stacy and Ben Smith; Brandi Zittritsch; Cody Zittritsch; and Dillon Moran all of Wesley; Jamie and Kristie Potter of Cedar Rapids; one great grandchild, Dylan Sheely; and four step-great grandchildren: Brody Ludwig, Taylor and Treyton Potter and Mariah Nock.

Being an only child, Arvin treasured the relationship he had with LaVon's parents, Minnie and Jim Higdon, and LaVon's brothers and sisters as well as with his aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gary, the son of the late LaVernon "Shadow" Mineart and the late Dixie (Irons) Mineart, was born on Oct. 18th, 1950, in Mason City, Iowa. He attended Mason City Community Schools and graduated in 1969. After he graduated, he served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973. He was honorably discharged in 1973 and is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Gary worked for VanHorn Auto Salvage in Mason City for 30 years before retiring in 2001. He also was very committed to the Stardust Lanes running the karaoke machine and tending bar. A few of the things Gary cherished were the Green Bay Packers, his grandchildren, his family and friends, bowling, game shows, crossword puzzles, automobiles, and playing cards.

He was married to Rebecca Nicholson on March 23, 1973, and was blessed with two children, Nicole and Nathan.

Gary was an avid sports fan but his favorite athletes were his children who were active in sports in high school. Gary will always be remembered as the "Right Field Guy" who would always be standing in the right field during softball and baseball games.

Gary will be sadly missed be his children, Nicole (Jason) Kesten of Mason City, and Nathan (Heather) Mineart of Coralville; his six grandchildren, Jayden, Justin, Tobias, and Isaiah of Mason City and Cade and Rhys of Coralville.

Dorothy Williams

CLEAR LAKE - Dorothy Williams, 93, of Clear Lake, formerly of Meservey and Thornton, died Saturday, (Feb. 2, 2008) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at First United Methodist Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Rose Calderon-Khan presiding. Interment will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Thornton.

Dorothy Arloine (Rounds) Williams was born on Dec. 21, 1914, in Eagle Grove to Charles and Dell (McVicker) Rounds. She went to school in Eagle Grove and Dows and graduated from Dows High School. Dorothy married Merle Williams on December 25, 1936 in Eagle Grove in the house she was born in. They farmed in the Dows area and in 1948 moved to a farm they purchased near Meservey. They lived there until they retired and moved into Thornton. Dorothy moved into an assisted living apartment in Clear Lake then the Oakwood Care Center in August 2006.

Immediate family includes daughter, Beverly (Eldon) Zieman, Meservey; son, Donald (Cher) Williams, Olympia, Wash.; daughters, Barbara (Jim) Faith, Selah, Wash., Bonnie (Mark) Marshall, Garner; 10 grandchildren: David (Lucinda) Zieman, Douglas (Tina) Zieman, Debra Love and friend, Bob Webush, Ronda (Mark) Fredrickson, Julie (Bill) Ring, Dorothy Gray, Frank (Tracy) Marshall, Jessie (Randy) Freerks, Chad (Melissa) Faith and Jennifer (Kevin) Fuller; 20 great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Ethel Williams, Iowa Falls, Ileen Garnsey, Morning Sun, Iowa, Joan King, Balaton, Minn.; brother, Virgil (Christy) Rounds, Knoxville, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Pat Rounds, Manchester; brother-in-law, Harlan Johnson, Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.

Billy D. Broers

MASON CITY - Billy D. Broers, 77, of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 3, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.Inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will take place following the service in the fellowship hall.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or Mercy Cancer Center.

Billy was born at his home on the farm south of Mason City on Jan. 16, 1931, the son of Emil and Cecil (Walls) Broers. He attended country school in Bath Township and graduated from Rockwell High School in 1949.

Billy was united in marriage to Marilyn G. Barber on Jan. 24, 1951, in Mason City. Billy farmed the family farm for many years until he retired and moved to Mason City.

Billy and Marilyn wintered in Arizona for 15 years. They enjoyed spending a few months in the warmer climate during the cold Iowa winters. During the summer months, he enjoyed having coffee at McDonald's with the "guys." Billy was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed flowers, his friends, and family.

Billy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn of Mason City; daughters, Janell (Brick) Hejlik, of Sheffield, Darla (Gary) Steenhard, of Rockwell, and Alesa (Ron) Sweers, of Britt; grandchildren, Travis (Tracy) Steenhard, of Rockwell, Amie Steenhard and Randy Crooks, of Rockwell, Angie (Philip) DeVries, of Sheffield, Drew and Matt Sweers, of Britt; great-grandchildren, Madison, Morgan and Mariah Steenhard, Nick and Levi Crooks, Aaron and Zach DeVries; brother, Emil (Anita) Broers, of Ventura; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, aunts, Ruth Smith, of Mason City, Marjorie Walls, of Clear Lake, Lois Fulghum, of Clear Lake and Pauline Walls of Tulsa, Okla.

Dale M. Bruns

GREENE - Funeral services for Dale M. Bruns, 85, of 201 S. Main, Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher and Pastor Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. in Greene, with a public Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Wednesday at the church.

Dale Melvin Bruns was born on Aug. 6, 1922, in Scott Township, Floyd County, a son of Herman John William and Martha Marie (Abendroth) Bruns, and died Saturday (Feb. 2, 2008) at Floyd County Medical Center, in Charles City.

He was baptized on May 25, 1923, and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on May 23, 1937. Dale received his education at Coldwater No. 4 Mount Nebo Country School, and started farming as a young man.

He was united in marriage to Minnie Elizabeth Uhlenhopp on Aug. 30, 1942, at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Dale and Minnie farmed in the rural Greene area for 50 years, before moving in November 1992, into their new home in Greene.

He had a great love for horses from childhood and throughout his years of farming. He participated in chariot races and trotting races and many county fairs in North Iowa and Southern Minnesota. He once owned a Belgian Draft Horse named Dick that weighed 2,240 pounds. For many years, Dale and Minnie sold produce at the farmers market. He often bragged about his large tomatoes.

Dale was humble, honest, and a good Christian man, whose life was an example to his family.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Minnie, of Greene; three daughters: Shirley (Jim) Fesenmeyer, Marlene (LaVern) Landers, and Jean (Lynn) Towsley, all of Greene; six grandchldren: Rodney (Marty) Fesenmeyer, Shannon (John) Latham, Jason (Kayleen) Landers, Angela (Tim) Christensen, Amy (Shane) Testroet, and Levi (Brooke) Towsley; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Edna Akin; and one brother, Marvin Bruns.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Dale M. Bruns Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Vernice L. Knapp

LITTLE CEDAR - Vernice L. Knapp, 95, of Little Cedar, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2008) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Vernice was born on Oct. 8, 1912, at Winston, Ky., the daughter of Andrew Price and Addie (Turpin) Williams. Vernice started attending school in Little Cedar in the third grade, and graduated from Little Cedar High School. She was married to Kenneth Knapp on June 20, 1936, at the Baptist Church in Osage, by the Rev. Tiffany.

Vernice was a homemaker and mother who enjoyed singing and music. She played accordion in local dance bands and played on the Little Cedar Women's Baseball Team as a pitcher and a third baseman during her early adult years. She was also a provider of room and board for local teachers. Vernice was a past member of Order of Eastern Star and the Mitchell County Women's Chorus. She was baptized in the Baptist faith and was a member of the Little Cedar United Methodist Church in her adult and married life. She was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church in Little Cedar, with the Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Inurnment will be at the Little Cedar Cemetery at a later date.

There will be a time of fellowship following the memorial service at the church.

Vernice is survived by a daughter, Peggy Jacobson of Osage; a son, Richard Knapp of Cedar Rapids; three granddaughters, Dawn (Myron) McCartney of Mayflower, Ark.; Johanna Knapp of Merriam, Kan.; Amanda (Jeff) Harapat of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren, William Echols, Casey Echols, and Bethany Harapat.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Knapp (died in 1997); a brother, Claude; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Lockie; and an infant brother, Henry.

Mildred "Millie" Larson

CHARLES CITY - Mildred "Millie" Larson, 82, of Charles City, died Sunday (Feb. 3, 2008) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Pastor Gary Van Wert, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

Mildred Arlene Madsen Larson was born on Feb. 10, 1925, at Henry, S.D., the daughter of Ernest and Ida (Frey) Madsen. She graduated from Watertown Senior High School, Watertown, S.D. and from the business college in Watertown.

On June 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Larson at Watertown. They moved to Charles City in 1963. Over the years, Millie was employed at a local insurance agency, the Gambles store and in the Floyd County Engineer's Office.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Millie's life centered around her God, family and church. She will always be remembered as a person who enjoyed touching the lives of many in the community via visitation, sending cards, taking part in the weekly church service at Port Charles and in many other ways.

Family was always important to Millie and she looked forward to spending and sharing her life with them.

Living family members include three children, David (Vicki) Larson, of Cedar Falls, Roger (Nadine) Larson, of Nevada, and Colleen (Dale) Kehret, of Charles City; six grandchildren, Keri (Jeremiah) Jacobson, Lori (Paul) Mwangi, Dana (Chris) Luck, Kristian (Christy) Larson, Dan Kehret and fianc�e, Alissa Miller and Kelly (Brian) Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on April 17, 2002; and a brother, Maynard Madsen.

Gary "Chic" Miller

CLEAR LAKE - Gary "Chic" Miller, 68, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday (Feb. 1, 2008) at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Tim Diehl of the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake, officiating.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. Military nonors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Inurnment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Chic was born on Feb. 27, 1939, in Clear Lake, the son of Gretchen Miller. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1957 and attended Mason City Junior College, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He entered into the U.S. Army in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1962.

Following the service, he came back to Clear Lake and was a route driver for Marshall and Swift Inc. Chic was a bartender at the Half Moon, the Golden Goose and Harbor Inn.

Chic enjoyed golfing, playing Kismet with his buddies, playing cards, bowling and going to the casinos. He loved watching all sports.

Chic is survived by several cousins, Gayle Stokes, of Clear Lake, Jim Bird and his wife, Karen, of Mason City, David Bird, of Mason City, Linda Anderson and her husband, Robert, of Clear Lake, Bob Bird and his wife, Connie, of Clear Lake, and Jackie Saltzgaver, of Texas.

Chic was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents, special aunts and uncles, Adam and Molly Miller, and Helen and Roy Bird, and Wayne and Ann Stokes; and cousins Rex Miller, Joey Bird and Gordon Stokes.

Gary L. Mineart

NORA SPRINGS - Gary L. Mineart, 57, of Nora Springs, died Friday (Feb. 1, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., with the Rev. Ron Stein, officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the services at the church.

Gary, the son of the late LaVernon "Shadow" Mineart and the late Dixie (Irons) Mineart, was born on Oct. 18, 1950, in Mason City. He attended Mason City community schools and graduated in 1969. After he graduated, he served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973. He was honorably discharged in 1973 and is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Gary worked for VanHorn Auto Salvage in Mason City for 30 years before retiring in 2001. He also was very committed to the Stardust Lanes running the karaoke machine and tending bar. A few of the things Gary cherished were the Green Bay Packers, his grandchildren, his family and friends, bowling, game shows, crossword puzzles, automobiles, and playing cards.

He was married to Rebecca Nicholson on March 23, 1973, and they were blessed with two children, Nicole and Nathan. Gary was an avid sports fan but his favorite athletes were his children who were active in sports in high school. Gary will always be remembered as the "Right Field Guy" who would always be standing in the right field during softball and baseball games. Gary will sadly be missed by his children, Nicole (Jason) Kesten, of Mason City, and Nathan (Heather) Mineart, of Coralville; his six grandchildren, Jayden, Justin, Tobias, and Isaiah, of Mason City and Cade and Rhys, of Coralville; siblings, Nancy Roberts (Gene), Mark Mineart, Mike Mineart (Holly), Susan VanHorn (Terry), Alvin Mineart (Jennifer), Gary Darling (Jill), Jean Hauan (Mike), Vicki Richardson, and Susan Martin (Mike) and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, LaVernon "Shadow" Mineart; his mother, Dixie (Irons) Mineart; and special family friends Kip Malone and Marlys and Wilmer Adrian.

Lillian E. Owen

Lillian E. Owen, 90, of Forest City, formerly of Lytton, passed away on Friday (Feb. 1, 2008) at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at The Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton, with Pastor Wayne Pfannkuch officiating. Burial will be at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home in Sac City.

Lillian Emma Leege was born in Lytton, on May 15, 1917, the daughter of John and Emma (Glassnapp) Leege. She was baptized at Emanuel Lutheran Church on June 10, 1917, and confirmed at Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton on March 29, 1931, where she remained a member. Lillian attended Coon Valley No. 1 Country School and graduated from Lytton High School in 1934. Following graduation, she attended nurses school in Sioux City.

On April 9, 1939, (Easter Sunday) Lillian was united in marriage to Orville Arthur Owen. Orville and Lillian purchased the John Leege farm south of Lytton where they lived and continued farming until 1989 when they retired and moved to an acreage near Fertile, to be closer to their family.

Lillian enjoyed the farm life; working in her large garden and sharing the abundance with family and friends. She also loved to cook and bake and entertain family at the farm. She won a prize for her recipe in the Pillsbury Bake-Off. Using her cooking talents, Lillian owned the Coffee Stop Caf� in Rockwell City from 1955 to 1965. Prior to that, she had worked at the Lytton Hatchery.

Lillian was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who loved and cherished her family. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and was a circle member.

Survivors include her children: Michael (Ramona) Owen, of Everly; Anieta Oltmann of Plano, Texas; and Ronald (Linda) Owen, of Forest City; eight grandchildren: Calvin Owen, Michael T. Owen, Kimberly (Dwain) Huckabee, Anne (Mark) Rockwell, Janelle (Jason) Wagner, Brandon Oltmann, Gregory Owen and Shannon Owen; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Carrie Owen, of Rockwell City, and Olive Clouss, of Meridian, Idaho; many nieces and nephews; and extended family members.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband Orville on March 19, 2001; brothers: Walter, Arthur, and Herman Leege; and sister Elnora Nehman.

William A. "Bill" Roggeman

Fern Ellen Stanton

ALGONA - Fern Ellen Stanton, 98, of Algona, died on Sunday (Feb. 3, 2008) at the Algona Manor Care Center.

Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, with Father Paul Eisele and the Rev. Mr. Bob Larsen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Algona.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church.

Fern Ellen Pederson was born on March 6, 1909, in Randall. She was the daughter of Peter and Bertha (Gabrielson) Pederson. Fern graduated from Randall's Community Schools in 1926.

Upon graduation, Fern attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She obtained her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Colorado State Teachers College in Fort Collins, Colorado. Fern began her teaching career with Colorado's Native Americans. Later she earned a Master's Degree in School Administration from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. Fern taught in Algona's Elementary schools for many years. She was a principal of Lucia Wallace Elementary School and later of both Lucia Wallace and Bertha Godfrey Elementary Schools.

During World War II, Fern married Mark Stanton of Algona. From her playing days at Randall High School, Fern was a lifelong basketball fan. She also enjoyed reading, music, traveling, the discussion of political issues and her school administrative work.

Fern was a member of University Women (Algona Chapter), Iowa Retired Teachers' Association and St. Cecelia Catholic Church. She was a founding member of the Algona Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Left to honor Fern's memory are her son, James Stanton and his wife, Deborah, of Clear Lake; two grandchildren, Mark Stanton and his wife, Abigail, of Omaha, Neb., and Melissa Cookman and her husband, Lucas, of North Liberty; three great-grandchildren, Makenna Jo Stanton, Maguire James Stanton, and John Mark Stanton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mark; two brothers, Jerome and Kenyon Pederson; and a sister, Genevieve Christensen.

Fern's family is deeply grateful for the considerate care rendered her, over time, by the staff of the Algona Manor Care Center and by the physicians and staff of the Kossuth Regional Health Center.
