John Junior Gruis was born on Feb. 15, 1935, in Rockford, the son of John D. and Anna (Bents) Gruis. He was the youngest of 10 children and attended school in Rockford.

John was inducted into the Army on Feb. 23, 1956. He was formally and honorably discharged from his military duties on Feb. 22, 1962, from Fort Sheridan, Ill.

On June 21, 1958, John was united in marriage to Darlene M. Vulk at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They became the proud and busy parents of a son, Scott, and a daughter, Julie.

John was a determined and strongly opinioned man who found great joy in spending time with his family, fishing, watching WWF Wrestling on television, playing games of chance at area casinos, teasing his grandchildren and having coffee with his friends.

He enjoyed listening to and attending the local happenings, going on tow truck calls with his son and playing with his "grand-dog, Mick."

Prior to John's failing health, he was an avid bowler. His bowling glory occurred when he bowled a perfect 300 game at the Comet Bowl in Charles City!

John was employed at White Farm Equipment in Charles City for many years until his department was closed. He went to work for Floyd County Secondary Roads as a shop foreman/mechanic until he retired in 1998.

Many will recall John's dedication to the Rockford Fire Department for 20 years and his devoted membership to Zion Lutheran Church.

Becoming bored with retirement, John worked a seasonal part-time job driving truck for Hoover Hatchery in Rudd and for the past two years assisted Dave Bartel with fall harvest.

John is survived by his wife, Darlene Gruis, of Rockford; his daughter, Julie and husband, Doug Salisbury, of Nora Springs; his son, Scott and wife, Cheryl Gruis, of Rockford; his grandchildren, Bryce (Michelle) Gruis, Spenser Gruis, Nicholas Salisbury, Kaycee Salisbury and Sawyer John Salisbury; his sister-in-law, Wanda Gruis; and his brother-in-law, John Van Laere. He will also be dearly missed by his great fishing buddies, Tom Burnett, Wayne Johnson and Duane Seibert and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. and Anna (Bents) Gruis, and six sisters and three brothers.

Those wishing to extend a memorial may direct them to the John "JR" Gruis Memorial Fund.
