Orie, known fondly as Nick by many of his family and friends, had a habit of being quiet and often you never knew he was even in the same room until a trick was played on you. He was known to be playful and kid-like when teasing his grandchildren.

Orie, "the Can Man of Rockford," believed in recycling. He was unable to pass a pop can on his bicycle without stopping to pick it up. He wore out three bicycles while picking up cans to recycle.

Going for walks and his passion for eating ice cream cones were a few of Orie's favorites! He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and RSVP.

Orie will also be well-remembered as a volunteer in Mason City at Food Share of Iowa, as the "Apple Man" and Elderbridge Agency. He delivered numerous Meals on Wheels in Rockford and was always willing to give of himself to the needs of the community and his church.

For many years, Nick worked for various farmers as a hired hand, frequently moving, changing addresses and schools for his kids.

For the last 20 years, Orie drove semi-trucks with his wife, Betty. They traveled in all of the lower 48 states and Canada. The last truck driven by Orie was for his son, Carl. It was his trucking career that left Orie with lasting memories. Often, before his death, he talked of getting another truck and going back on the road.

Orie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty J. Fulk, of Rockford; his children, Carl (Diane) Fulk, of Slater, Lynn (Kyong Cha) Fulk, of Aiea, Hawaii, and Marlys (Gene) Rentz, of Stewartville, Minn.; his sisters, Ruth Morelock and Grace (Rick) Phair, all of Redwood City, Calif.; his brothers, Earl (Elizabeth) Fulk, of Menlo Park, Calif., and Jack (Emogene) Fulk of Anita, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, John and Eva Fulk; his granddaughter, Rebecca Fulk; his two sisters, Ruby Parker and Thelma Fulk; and his three brothers, Bob, Sterling and Eldon Fulk.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St. in Klemme, and continue one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.

Louis Viola Albers, the daughter of Lubbe and Gretchen Albers, was born March 27, 1924, on a farm outside of Klemme, about two miles from where her future husband Melvin grew up. She was one of six children born in the family which also included Jennie, Johanna, John, Marie and Harold. Though her life began during the Depression Era her parents always made sure that the family was provided with whatever was needed.

Her father, Lubbe, passed away in 1926 and the family moved to a smaller parcel of land that Lubbe's father had owned.

Louise's mother, Gretchen, died in 1936 when Louise was 12. Her siblings, Jennie and Jo, raised the family after that time.

Louise began her education at the age of 4 in a one-room country school and went on to graduate from the eighth grade at age 12. Jennie and Jo decided that Louise would further her schooling in high school while the other siblings never had this opportunity. Louise graduated from Klemme High School in 1941 at the age of 17.

Following high school she worked for about one year in Klemme and then enrolled in business school in Omaha, Neb., in 1942. She later graduated and became a civilian bookkeeper for the Air Force. She was employed with the Air Force for several years, during which time she had assignments in Omaha, Topeka and Oklahoma City. She returned to Klemme in July 1946 to keep house for her two brothers after declining an assignment to go to Hawaii.

She met her future husband Melvin and they were united in marriage in September 1947 at Winona, Minn. Their marriage lasted 37 years before Melvin passed away.

Following their marriage Melvin and Louise farmed with his parents and then later farmed on their own. In addition to assisting her husband with the farming tasks, Louise was a full-time home maker and mother providing for the needs of her children: VaLinda, Rosalyn and Kent.

Though her main focus in life was her husband and children, she did find time to participate as a very active member of Immanuel Reformed UCC Church in Klemme where she was involved in the Women's Fellowship and held a variety of offices, as well as serving at various functions and events including many funerals. She was a member of the Farm Bureau and helped out in the American Cancer Society.

Louise enjoyed being involved in the local Senior Citizens and area 500 card clubs. She loved gardening, raising a wide variety of beautiful flowers, sewing, and was an avid reader.

While Melvin was alive, the couple did some traveling including taking a trip to Venezuela during the 1970s to visit their daughter, Rosalyn, in the Peace Corps. The couple also had taken excursions to Arkansas during the winters to spend several weeks there until spring.

Louise and Melvin farmed until 1984 at which time Melvin's health had deteriorated to the point that he could no longer actively operate the farm. They sold the farm and moved into Klemme. Melvin died in July 1985.

Following Melvin's death, Louise's main focus in life became her grandchildren, her kids, her church and the community groups of which she belonged. She looked forward to visits with her sister Johanna and traveling to spend time with her children and grandchildren. Her journeys included trips a variety of places including California, Minnesota, Puerto Rico, Connecticut, Nevada, Mexico and the Apostle Islands.

Her health began to decline in 2000. Louise had resided at the Westview Care Center in Britt for the last several years of her life.

Louise leaves to cherish her memory three children, VaLinda and husband, Karl DeWahl, of St. Paul, Minn., Rosalyn and husband, Jim de la Cruz, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Kent Pearson of Rockwell; three grandchildren, Kathleen and Aaron DeWahl and James de la Cruz; a sister, Johanna Foss of Belmond; brother-in-law, Carl and wife, Delores Pearson, of Klemme; and sister-in-law, Jean Pearson of Klemme; and many nieces nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Jennie and Marie; and her brothers John and Harold.

Lois was born on Sept. 2, 1933 to Al and Orpha (Marshall) Jennings at Letts.

As a small child her family moved to the Mitchell County area where she attended various rural schools.

On Sept. 28, 1950, she was united in marriage to Kenneth D. Heller in Princeton, Mo. To this union six children were born, Kenneth M. Heller, Cynthia M. Caroon, LuAnn K. Brandt, Patty L. Heller, Sandra R. Wiesen and Tammy L. Fallon.

On Oct. 30, 1971, she was united in marriage to Charles E. Thomas and moved to the Des Moines area in 1973. She worked for Pella Windows and Amwest Surety Insurance Company while in Des Moines.

In 1983, she and Charles moved to Crystal Lake to operate the Crystal Lake Hardware Store for a few years, while she commuted to Minneapolis and worked for Amwest Surety until her retirement. Prior to her illness she was employed at Suntron in Garner, putting together circuit boards. She was most proud of her ability to read electrical diagrams and outperforming her younger peers.

Lois had a passion for family and friends. Her smile was always present and ready for anyone who wanted to get to know her. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Family gatherings were a priority, celebrating birthdays and holidays. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and she loved having her decorations out for all to share.

When the weather was nice, she could be found working in her flower beds or on the golf course. When there were sporting events for her grandchildren she was always there, whether it was hockey, football, basketball, softball, or baseball, she was competitive by nature and wanted to see her family do well! She enjoyed her Wednesday night dart league and cheering for her Vikings.

One of her hobbies was painting on crafts and Christmas ornaments. She had a talent that she loved to share with others and those were precious gifts to anyone lucky enough to receive a painting from her.

She always had a sense of adventure, wanting to know all she could by reading or traveling to any place that she wanted to see. She was so proud of being able to drive to Laurel, Montana in September 2007 and experience many wonderful memories with her family.

She had such a big heart to all that knew her and was willing to help in any way that she could. She was a special grandma to Courtney and Chuck, helping to raise them and guide them with her love. Her laughter and sense of humor will be missed, because if you knew Lois, you knew she lived life to the fullest!
