Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 28, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden with the Rev. David Bergstrom officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Bingham Township Cemetery near Woden.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

MASON CITY - Patsy Jean Engle, 69, formerly of Fort Worth, Texas, died Thursday (April 24, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Patsy Jean Engle was born Dec. 12, 1938, in McCurtain, Okla., the daughter of Pat and Elizabeth (Wyatt) Shockley.

Patsy will be greatly missed for her honesty, great sense of humor and her loving and caring heart. She was a very resourceful woman raising six children. Her greatest love was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Patsy is survived by her children, Vonda (Brian) Rush of Mason City, Diane (Mark) Manderscheid of Fort Worth, Texas, Lenny (Cindy) Romero of Colorado Springs, Colo., Richard (Julia) Romero of Albuquerque, N.M., John (Phyllis) Romero of Rio Rancho, N.M., Jeff (Sheila) Romero of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Jayson, Briana, Christopher, Trisha, Tyrel, Jessica, Tamara, Ryan, Jared, Devin, Jessie, Amber, Marcus and Mike, five great-grandchildren (with two in the oven!); three brothers, five sisters along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Patsy is preceded in death by her parents; and infant daughter, Cynthia Ann.

LAKE MILLS - Arnold H. Groe, 87, of Lake Mills, died Thursday (April 24, 2008) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, April 26, at Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minn., with Pastor Julie Fiske officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in rural Emmons.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until time of services today at Emmons Lutheran Church.

He was a gentle man who loved music, farming, woodworking, basketball and his family. Arnold Herman Groe was born Dec. 21, 1920, to Tosten and Elma (Stene) Groe in Worth County. The second of five children, he attended Rovang Country School and then Emmons High School, where he played varsity basketball. After graduating in 1938, he farmed with his father and later purchased the farm and dairy herd.

In 1960, Arnold married Agnes Radius and acquired an instant family with her three children, David, Dorothy and Eric. Arnold and Agnes were the first couple to be married in the then new Emmons Lutheran Church building. Their son, Paul, was born in 1962 and their daughter, Ann, in 1966.

Arnold was a life-long member of Emmons Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and sang tenor in the choir. He was active in the Iowa Republican party, served several years as Norway Township Trustee and participated in the Iowa Farm Bureau. As an avid music lover, he enjoyed singing, concerts and playing the harmonica. During his four years at the Care Center, he enjoyed entertaining staff and residents with harmonica music.

In retirement, Arnold enjoyed woodworking, reading Western novels, teaching his grandchildren to fish and entertaining his friends with "Ole and Lena" jokes. His family will always remember his sweet, gentle spirit.

Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes; brother, Everett; sister, Lorraine; and son, Eric.

Arnold is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Jen Groe, Minneapolis, and Vern and Joan Groe, Wisconsin; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Gail Radius, Florida, and Paul and Connie Groe, Minneapolis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Kurt Kasik, New Hampshire, and Ann and Perry Aalgaard, Lake Mills; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmons Lutheran Church.

Jackson, Dr. Jeffrey A.
 
 
Dr. Jeffrey A. Jackson, 50, of Mason City, and formerly of West Milton, Ohio, passed away Friday (April 18,2008) in Costa Rica.

Jeff was born Jan. 10, 1958 in Troy to John and Marjorie (Thomas) Jackson. He was a 1976 graduate of Milton Union High School in West Milton and then received his bachelor's degree from the University of Akron in 1978. He furthered his education at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine where he received his medical degree in 1984.

He began his residency at St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, Ill., and finished in New York, N.Y. He recently retired after 15 years of practice in psychiatry in Mason City.

Jeff had an adventurous spirit, he loved to travel and did so throughout the world. He was an avid reader, enjoyed learning new things and studied many subjects. He had an inquisitive personality and sought out answers to life's many questions. Jeff understood that life was not all black and white and helped many people with his knowledge and courage. He had a big heart and was a thoughtful person. He had many pets of his own throughout his life and loved all animals.

Jeff will be missed and remembered by his parents, John and Marjorie (Thomas) Jackson of West Milton; his brother, Thomas B. Jackson of Vandalia; his sister, Julie A. Jackson Buckingbam, of Englewood; six nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Andrew and Minnie Jackson, and Charles and Mary Lou Thomas; and a niece, Haley Thee.

A community memorial service for Dr. Jeffrey A. Jackson will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the Knights of Columbus, 551 S. Taft Ave. in Mason City.

Friends, colleagues and former clients are invited to attend.

Memorial services to celebrate Jeff's life will be held 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2, at the Jackson Funeral Home, 1 S. Main St. Pleasant Hill, Ohio. 937-676-2201. Private family interment will take place in the Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Ohio.

Family and friends will be gathering from 5 p.m. until time of services at 7.

RUDD - Frank James Onken, 80, of Rudd, died Thursday (April 24, 2008) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.

Frank was born June 11, 1927, in Orchard, the son of Enno and Jennie (Rademacher) Onken, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After high school, he served time in the army, being stationed in Japan. On Dec. 18, 1949, Frank was united in marriage to Ruth Lundene. They farmed in the Rudd area until his retirement.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Frank is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Rudd; and their children, Dianne (Ronald) Casto of Mason City, Richard (Barbara) Onken of Rudd, Dwight Onken of Osage, and Barbara (Duane) Smith of Osage; five grandchildren, Pamela (Joe) Rowe, Laura (Rodney) Arcenas, Amy Smith, Melanie Onken and Scott Onken; three great-grandchildren, Jade and Jaxson Arcenas and Adler Rowe.

He is also survived by two sisters, Jennie Adams of Osage, and Donna Onken of Omaha, Neb.; and two brothers, Arthur Onken of Osage, and James (Jean) Onken of Osage.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronald; two sisters, Martha and Dorothy; and six brothers, Walter, John, Edward, George, Eno and Keith.

BELMOND - Elsie M. Schlei, 90, most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, a longtime resident of Belmond and formerly of Klemme, died Thursday (April 24, 2008) at Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, at the Klemme United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond, and then one hour prior to the services on Monday, May 5, at the church in Klemme.

Arlene Marvella Burma, the daughter of Christ and Clara (Stokkeboe) Leithe, was born Aug. 9, 1926, at Rake.

She graduated from Rake High School. After high school she helped families in the Rake area with child care.

On Dec. 23, 1948, she was married to Aeilt "Al" Burma at Rake. They made their home at Wesley until 1959 when they moved into Woden.

Arlene enjoyed cooking, crocheting and visiting with people.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and WELCA.

Arlene is survived by her children: Janet (Arthur) Hardman of Jefferson, Larry Burma of Woden and David (Renee) Burma of Wesley; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Burma of Crystal Lake; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Clarine (Vernon) Leeck of Algona.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Al, Dec. 6, 1991; and her son, Allan, Feb. 21, 1998.

NORA SPRINGS - John W. Freese, of 22576 240th St., Nora Springs, died Thursday (April 24, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, at First United Methodist Church in Nora Springs with Pastor Jim Turner officiating. Burial will take place at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs immediately following the service.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs.

Memorials may be made out to the First United Methodist Church of Nora Springs.

John W. Freese was born July 23, 1917, in Nora Springs, the son of William G. and Ella (Pippert) Freese.

He attended country school until the 10th grade when he left to help farm. John farmed for 74 years until 1998 when he retired. John married Lois Delores Miller on Oct. 14, 1967, at First United Methodist Church in Nora Springs.

He was a member on the First United Methodist Church where he not only sang in the choir but also participated in many of the church boards.

John also was a member of the Cemetery Board of Directors, the Mareview Manor Board and was an honorary member of the Memorial Committee at church.

John's life was his farm, and one of his best friends was his dog, Snoopy.

John was very proud of the fact that a two-legged pig was born on his farm and lived for a year; he was quick to show everyone pictures of the pig.

He had a very good sense of humor, but was also very stern and set in his ways and beliefs. John had a heart of gold and often visited the area nursing homes.

John is survived by his second cousins, Donald (Lila) Freese, Mason City; Margaret (Earl) Shanks, Mason City; Joan Hughes, Nora Springs; Frank Hughes, Ariz.; Jack (Beverly) Krause, Nora Springs; Robert (Phyllis) Krause, Mason City; his special friend, Ross Treloar, Nora Springs, and many other cousins, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Audrey; aunts, uncles, cousins, and his wife, Lois.

GARNER - Lucille M. McMillin Love, 86, of Garner, passed away Friday (April 18, 2008) at Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, May 3, at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 760 Center Ave. in Garner, with the Rev. Paul Nelson of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City officiating. Following the service a lunch will be served.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. July 5, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Lucille's nephew, the Rev. Christopher Boehnke of Risen Savior Lutheran Church, Tea, S.D., will officiate. Lunch will follow.

Lucille, the oldest child born to Edward and Elsa (Pueggel) Boehnke, was born March 22, 1922, near Garner.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church near Garner.

She graduated from Garner High School in 1939 and continued her education at Iowa State University in Ames.

On Oct. 22, 1943, she was united in marriage to Robert Leroy McMillin at St. John's Lutheran Church near Garner.

Bob and Lucille lived in Denver, Colo., and Minneapolis, Minn.

In 1945 they purchased the Terril Hardware Store in Terril, Iowa, where they made their home until 1958.

Lucille was employed from 1955-58 as secretary for the Terril School District.

In 1958 Bob and Lucille moved to Emmetsburg, where Lucille worked as secretary in the Emmetsburg High School principal's office.

In 1966 they moved to Grundy Center where Lucille was employed by Grundy County as Director of Homemaker Health Aid for several years, then worked for the Grundy County Superintendent of Schools.

In 1972 she became an employee of the Grundy County Clerk of Court until retiring in October 1988.

She was an active member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, the Grundy County Historical Society, and Business and Professional Women.

On Aug. 16, 2002, she was united in marriage to Quentin Love, a classmate from the Garner High School class of 1939, at American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. They made their home in Mesa, Ariz., and had great fun traveling the USA. In February 2008 they moved to Garner.

Lucille was fond of flowers, gardening, cooking, history, and especially genealogy. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She loved to tell stories and told many great stories about the history of people, places and things. She shared her love of God's amazing works with everyone she met and used her talents to help others.

She is survived by her husband, Quentin Love of Garner; her daughter, Jane Eileen Brownlee and husband, Ron, of Houston, Texas; her son, Charles Edward McMillin of Ellicott City, Md.; five grandchildren: Richard Arthur Brownlee and wife, Carla, of Houston, Texas, Julia Elizabeth Royster and husband, Jason, of Warwick, R. I., Jennifer Elsa Gustafson and husband, Trent, of Boulder, Colo., Charles Collin Brownlee and wife, Allison, of Houston, Texas, Sean Robert McMillin of Ellicott City, Md.; one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Brownlee of Houston, Texas; three sisters: Irma Nissen and husband, Ralph, of Ames, Marilyn Hayes and husband, Harlan, of Garner, Kay Eginton and husband, Bill, of Iowa City; two sisters-in-law: Norma Boehnke Nutting of Clear Lake and Linda Boehnke of Omaha, Neb.; many nieces and nephews; and also Quentin's children: Christie Von Protz and husband, Paul, of West Bridgewater, Mass., Linda Petersen and husband, Wayne, of Iowa City, Jeffrey C. Love of Grand Junction; grandchildren: Matthew Von Protz, West Bridgewater, Brandice Armstrong, Kailee Peterson and Schyler Petersen, all of Iowa City; and one great-grandson, Thomas James Freestone, Iowa City.

Lucille was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Leroy McMillin, on Feb. 28, 1985; her son, Roger Lynn McMillin, on Sept. 10, 1997; her father, Edward Richard Martin Boehnke, on Dec. 8, 1979; her mother, Elsa Margareth Pueggel Boehnke, on March 27, 1937; her brothers, James Boehnke and Donald Boehnke; and an infant sister, Ruth.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Apache Wells Community Church, Mesa, Ariz., Lutheran World Relief, a joint international ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, or a charity of your choice.

MASON CITY - Ben J. Nozicka, 85, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Thursday (April 24, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 28, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Jon Seda officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A scriptural wake service will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Newman Catholic School System.

Ben was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Mason City the son of John and Hedy (Bubik) Nozicka.

He graduated from Mason City High, Mason City Junior College, and attended the University of Iowa.

Ben served in the United State Air Force during World War II and was captured and held in a German POW camp for 11 months. Following his discharge, he returned to Mason City.

He retired from Winnebago Industries after several years of driving RVs.

Ben was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, VFW, and the Western Fraternal Bohemian Association.

Ben is survived by a sister, Marion Andersen of Mason City; nieces, Susan Steenblock (Leslie) of Mason City and Paula Klemesrud (Wendell) of Cedar Springs, Mich.; nephews, Marc Andersen of Clear Lake and Brian Andersen of Mason City; three great-nephews, two great-nieces and two great-great-nieces.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents.

OSAGE - Dean D. Thompson, 79, passed away Friday (April 25, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, April 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Dean was born Dec. 17, 1928, the son of Dale and Marion (Francis) Thompson, in Sexton.

He attended country school and graduated from Rudd in 1946.

He was united in marriage to Irene Mathiesen on Oct. 30, 1949, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osage.

They moved to the Little Cedar area where Dean farmed for 20 years and later moved northwest of Osage.

Dean was a feed salesman and drove a senior citizen bus.

Dean and Irene loved to travel and fish up north. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Thompson of Osage; four sons, Douglas Thompson of Osage, Darwin (Geri) Thompson of St. Ansgar, Dennis (Ginger) Thompson of Osage and David (Dana) Thompson of Osage; one daughter, Debra (Bob) Barclay of Mitchell; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandson, and one sister, Shirley Sletten of Osage.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

SHEFFIELD - Thelma L. Thomas-Ziesman, 88, of Sheffield, passed away on Tuesday (April 22, 2008) at the Sheffield Care Center. Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at First United Methodist Church, 510 Thompson St. in Sheffield, with Pastor Cathy J. N. Weigand and Pastor Karl Watkins officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Memorials may be directed to the family of Thelma L. Ziesman.

Thelma L. Ziesman was born on April 14, 1920, in Franklin County, a daughter of Steve and Hilda (Ubben) Molencamp.

Thelma attended country schools. She worked on a farm as a hired woman, taking care of the children and doing housework after her eighth-grade graduation. While she was in school, Thelma lived in town and worked as a waitress in a restaurant. She graduated from Sheffield High School in 1938.

She was united in marriage on June 5, 1938, to Clifford LeRoy Thomas. They lived in Sheffield, Chapin, Ventura and Graettinger.

After his Clifford's death, she was united in marriage to Russell Frank Ziesman on May 21, 1982.

Along with raising her family she again worked as a waitress from time to time. Thelma also worked as a county home health aide.

She enjoyed reading, bird watching, playing 500, and most of all spending time with her family.

She was a member of the Sheffield United Methodist Church, where she was once active in the women's circle.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Roland Dean Thomas, Carol Jean (Don) Nelson, Shari Lynn (Greg) Hampton and Lori Ann (David) Heyden; step-children, Diana (Michael) Arndorfer, Debra (Gary) Janssen, Dawn Ziesman and Darla (Craig) Gonnerman; grandchildren, Leslie (Jim) Johnson, Chris (Julie) Nelson, Cathy (Mike) Weigand, Kevin Hampton, Matt Hampton, Dawnica (Joe) King, Devon (Josh) Schiff and Megan (Shane) Donaldson; great grandchildren, Emily Szymanski, Jessica Johnson, Erin Johnson, Ben Weigand, John Weigand, Dante Hampton, Karlee Schiff, Connor and Kiara Donaldson; and great-great grandson, Jacob Szymanski; sister, Sharon (Gordon) Quintus; brothers, LeRoy (Billi) Molencamp, Ron (Carole) Molencamp and Larry (Sonia) Molencamp; sisters-in-law, Georgia and Lou Molencamp; brother-in-law, Jim Buck, and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Donald B. Abbott, 75, of 1115 8th St. S.W. died Sunday (April 27, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Military honors will be by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be today from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home and then one hour before the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald was born on July 2, 1932, in Boone, the son of William and Margaret (Horne) Abbott. He attended Boone High School.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Don married Eloise Hockensmith on Jan. 3, 1953, in Arkansas.

Following the service, he moved back to Mason City and drove truck for the Teamsters Union Local 828, Mason City.

His greatest joy was spoiling his grandchildren, going on cruises and serving on the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association Honor Guard.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, lifetime member of Clear Lake V.F.W., former member of Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and Eagles of Mason City.

ST. ANSGAR - Vergie M. Brones, 91, of St. Ansgar, died on Friday (April 25, 2008) in St. Ansgar at the Good Samaritan Center.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the United Methodist Church, in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Burial will be next to her husband at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Vergil "Vergie" Mabel Christensen was born in Forest City, on Nov. 26, 1916, one of eight children born to Herman and Bertha Margaret (Lytzen) Christensen.

Vergie met Stanley R. Brones, also of Forest City, and they were married on Jan. 18, 1933; they recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

Vergie and Stan had one daughter, Jana, who attended school in Osage, and now lives in Arizona with her husband and family.

Vergie and Stan farmed the Brones farm near Forest City until 1936. At that time they moved to the St. Ansgar area and farmed until retirement in 1978 and moved into St. Ansgar. Vergie was on the ground floor when Amway products first became available for the public; she rose to a high position with the company's sales representatives before retiring from the company around 1980.

Before and after retiring, they enjoyed traveling all over the United States including Hawaii, where their grandson and his family lived for a couple of years.

When their daughter, Jan and her family moved to Arizona, they spent most winters in the Mesa area until just recently.

Vergie enjoyed family and friends, traveling, spending time and entertaining at their cabin at Lake Lizzie near Pine River, Minn., and gardening. After retiring from farming, Stan joined Vergie in gardening and canning. Even as recently as last summer they put in a garden and canned Vergie's favorite spice pickles and beet pickles.

Vergie was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Herman Christensen; brothers, Gene and Lee; sisters, Phyllis, Leatrice, and Thelma. Most recently her beloved husband Stan, of 75 years, passed away on Feb. 21, 2008.

Surviving is her daughter, Jan and husband, Morrie, of Mesa, Ariz.; grandson, Jeff and wife Shawn; and great- grandchildren, Cody and Deanna of Camp Verde, Ariz.; one brother, Orsen, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one sister, Aldyce Chris McEnany, of Mesa, Ariz.

She will be missed by those who knew her, but always remembered by those who loved her.

Joseph J. Buzicky, 63 of Mesa, Ariz. passed away on April 26, 2008.

He was born on July 13, 1944, in Britt, Iowa, to John and Helen Buzicky. He graduated from Garner high school in 1962 and served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He lived and farmed in Iowa until 1980 when he and his family moved to Arizona.

As a young man he played the electric guitar with the L&M Family Affair Band and also the Hobo Day Band in Britt, Iowa. He was also affiliated with the Catholic Workman organization.

He was a CAD designer for Cerprobe Corporation in Arizona.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vincent and John Buzicky; and sisters, Sally Malek and Cleta Stupka.

He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Warren, Jody Buzicky and Polly Ruiz; and four grandchildren, Cameron and Corey Warren and Cheyenne and Czarina Ruiz; and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Memorial services will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Chapel of Prayer, 108 N. 56th St., Mesa, Ariz.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

MASON CITY - William "Bill" Earl Christiansen, 78, of Mason City, passed away peacefully on Thursday (April 24, 2008) surrounded by his loving family, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. His wish was to be cremated.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (April 30, 2008) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John Stevens, officiating.

Inurnment will be held at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery.

A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be performed after the service by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

William "Bill" was born Feb. 17, 1930, to William Harold and Pearl Sarah (Lester) Christiansen in Mason City. He attended most of his education in Mason City and graduated at Armijo High School in Fairfield, Calif.

William joined the United States Coast Guard and served aboard the Wachusett for two and a half years.

He then went on to work for the United States Post Office for 35 years as a window clerk in Fairfield, Calif. He met and married Shirley Marcele (Stevens) Christiansen on Feb. 17, 1957. The couple resided in Fairfield for 20 years until they returned to Iowa in 1977.

William is survived by his wife, Shirley; his son, Richard; and two daughters, Kathryn Loux and Henry Payne and Vicki and Robert Eggers, all of Mason City; 12 grandchildren, Sonjia Christiansen, Sarah Cimmino, Suzanne and Cheriff Awad, David and Jason Gailey, Chayna, and Daniel, all of California, Skylar Christiansen of Des Moines, Jennifer Nixon, Melissa Dunham, Lacey Loux, Megan and Ben Jurisch, all of Mason City; 12 great-grandchildren, Sierra, Billie Michael, Benjamin, Dina, Jackie, Daniel, Deshawn, Marino, Dezirae, Dontae, Daneil, Anyia, Zach, all who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; one sister, of Patricia; one brother, Jackie; one son, Michael; and a daughter, Lorri Gailey.

His family will always remember him as a fisherman, craftsman, lover of a good joke and a good laugh and above all, he was our hero and will be forever missed.

William Ray "Willy" Covington Jr., 46, of Franklin, Ga. passed away on Saturday (April 19, 2008) at the Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at the home of Ray and Shirley Covington in Goodell, Iowa.

William Ray "Willy" Covington Jr. was born on Jan. 5, 1962, in Linn County, Iowa to William Ray Covington Sr., and Shirley Jean Tate Covington.

He was a 1980 graduate of Belmond High School in Belmond.

He was a pipe liner for the International Operators Union Local No. 926.

His family attended the Franklin United Methodist Church.

He was a loving husband, son, and father. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Justine Lockwood Covington, of Franklin, Ga.; two daughters, Jennifer Hammel, of Latimer, and Betty Jean Covington, of Franklin, Ga.; four sons, Logan Hammel of Clarion, Brandon Manning of Franklin, Ga., Brent Manning of Franklin, Ga., and William Ray "Brew" Covington III., of Franklin, Ga.; his parents, William "Ray" Covington Sr. and Shirley Jean Covington, of Goodell; two sisters, Laurie Winfrey of Ames, and Rhonda Wenzel of Belmond; two brothers, Randy Covington, of Eldon, Mo., and Larry Covington, of Stone Ridge, Va.; one granddaughter, Amaya Hammel.

Clarence 'Sonny' Emhoff

MASON CITY - Marjorie Emhoff passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at the Good Shepherd Health Center at the age of 76.

Marjorie Ann Delano was born on April 29, 1931, to Victor and Bertha (Jacobson) Delano, in Clarion. She was baptized and confirmed at the Congregational Church in Clarion. Marjorie attended school in Clarion and was a graduate of Drake University, with a degree in music education. Upon graduating from Drake, she taught music in the Sheffield school system.

Clarence "Sonny" Emhoff passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, while in care of Hospice of North Iowa, at the age of 77. Clarence Frank Emhoff Jr. was born on April 30, 1930, in Sheffield, to Clarence Frank and Nellie (Vaughn) Emhoff. Sonny attended school in Sheffield, entered into the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he returned to Sheffield and began work at the Sheffield Brick and Tile Co.

The couple met while Marge was teaching at the Sheffield schools and Sonny was working at the Brick and Tile Co. On Sept. 24, 1954, Marge and Sonny were united in marriage at the Congregational Church in Clarion. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Mason City.

Marge taught music in the Plymouth schools and Sonny continued his work at the Sheffield Brick and Tile until 1988, when the business closed. Sonny worked the next four years in road construction and retired in 1992. The couple resided in the home they built in 1959 until this past December.

They are survived by son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Mary, of Eagan, Minn.; sisters and sisters-in-law, Lavaughn Uhlenhopp, of Mason City and Donna Mehlberg, of California; brothers-in-law, Robert Buchanan, of Des Moines and Gordon Broka, of Aredale; and several nieces and nephews.

BOULDER,Colo. - Joyce Stearns Hatland passed away Tuesday (April 15, 2008) at the Anam Chara Home in Boulder, Colo.

Joyce will be remembered with a celebration of her life and faith at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa.

Joyce was born on Feb. 26, 1930, to Jules and Willis Stearns in Estherville.

An excellent student and talented musician, Joyce graduated with a teaching degree from Waldorf College in Forest City.

She married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth "Ken" Hatland after graduation.

Two months after their wedding, Joyce and Ken moved to Rock Point Navajo Mission in Arizona where they were missionaries for five years to the Navajo Indians. They also served as missionaries in Ogden, Utah.

Their daughter, Sharon, was born in 1956. Ken and Joyce moved to Salt Lake City in 1958, where Stephen was born.

Ken decided to enter the ministry and attended Augsburg Seminary in Minneapolis, Minn. Joyce took an elementary teaching job in Minneapolis, Minn.

Kevin was born in Minneapolis on March 15, 1960.

After ordination, Ken received his first call to Lake Mills. Joyce taught at the local elementary school. From Lake Mills, the family moved to Elvira. Joyce continued to teach school for the six years they lived there. It was in Elvira that Joyce and Ken opened their home to foreign exchange students and foster children. Ken and Joyce welcomed 26 foster children into their home for over a decade. Their daughter, Lynda Brewer Doughan joined them in Elvira.

Rake, Iowa, was the next Hatland home. Joyce continued to teach and care for the extended family that grew and grew.

Ken accepted a call to Mason City where Joyce taught at St. Joseph's Elementary School and taught English as a Second Language to adult immigrants in a five-county area.

Joyce and Ken had many wonderful adventures together. Their love for their Lord and each other continued through difficult times as well. After Joyce contracted Alzheimer's disease in 1999, Ken cared for her at home until five years ago. Joyce was lovingly cared for at Good Shepherd in Mason City until last year.

In August 2007, Ken and Joyce embarked in their last adventure, they moved to Boulder, Colo., where their sons reside.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Ken; her brothers, Marlin and Richard; children: Sharon Hatland Nygren and her son, Christopher; Stephen and Mira Hatland and their daughter, Kaia; Kevin and Cher Hatland and their son, Jessie; Lynda and Duane Doughan and their sons, Jeremy, Troy, and Nick, and their daughter, Brooke.

KANAWHA - Mildred "Mil" Brummund Holloway, 94, died Sunday (April 27, 2008) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

A celebration of her life will be held at a future date.

Mil was born in Kanawha on Oct. 8, 1913, to Herman and Lela (Young) Brummund. She had two brothers, John and Bob Brummund.

Mildred graduated from high school in Kanawha, and attended Drake University in Des Moines. She graduated from the Nursing Program at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, and later graduated with a Master's in Nursing from the University of California Los Angeles. She worked as an obstetrical nurse for many years in the Los Angeles area.

Mildred became a Professor of Nursing, having taught at Harbor College in Los Angeles. She was instrumental in starting the nursing program at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Calif..

It was during her work as a Registered Nurse that she met and married Boothby Holloway. They lived most of their married life in the Los Angeles area. Mil and Boots had two sons, Sterling and Peter Holloway.

After the death of her husband, Mil moved back to Kanawha to be near her son Peter and his family, and to participate in the family farming operation. She later married Robert Clark of Kanawha.

Mildred remained active in the medical field serving as an Emergency Medical Technician in Kanawha. She also was active on the Physician Search Committee, and served the community with the Saturday morning blood pressure clinics. Nursing was a major part of Mildred's life, and she was an excellent role model for her daughter-in-law, Lissa and granddaughter, Jennifer.

Mildred is survived by her son, Sterling and his wife Vera, and their children: LeAnn Marino, Sterling Holloway, Robert Holloway and David Holloway, all of Auburn, Calif.; son, Peter and his wife, Lissa, of Kanawha and their children: Jennifer Weiland, of Britt and Sarah Holloway, of San Diego, Calif.; as well as nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Lela Brummund; brothers, John and Bob Brummund; husband, Boothby Holloway; and second husband, Robert Cook.

Memorials in Mildred's honor may be sent to the Kanawha EMTs.

MARION - Dr. Leo M. Schmall, 80, of 4570 Mission Ave., Marion, died Sunday (April 27, 2008) in his home following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Anton and Edward Schmall; two sisters, Rose Anderson and Ann Pfow; and a grandson, Jim Schmall.

Leo was born on Oct. 31, 1927, the son of Louis G. and Katherine M. (Magdits) in Mason City. He graduated in 1945 from Grant Township Consolidated Schools and served with the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948.

He married June Angle on Aug. 29, 1949, in Ledyard. Leo graduated from Iowa State University in 1954 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He worked for many years as a veterinarian in private practice in Rockwell. Leo then joined the State of Iowa Department of Agriculture as Assistant State Veterinarian and worked there until his retirement in 1999. He was ordained as a Permanent Deacon of the Catholic Church in October of 1978. Leo had an intense love of his family and the work he did with animals and within the church.

Robert J. Vance was born on March 8, 1929, in Cassville, Wis., the son of Robert A. and Kathryn (Grimm) Vance. Bob graduated from Mason City High School in 1947.

Bob worked for Warner Brothers Studio as a security officer, and became acquainted with Judy Garland, Doris Day and John Wayne. Bob worked for the Mason City Clinic, North Iowa Medical Center for 23 years and retired from Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, he worked in maintance at all three places.

Bob enjoyed collecting and refurbishing old cars, going to the Waterloo Cattle Congress and attending county fairs.

Bob was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Classic Car Club.

Bob is survived by his special friend, Dane Barkema, of Mason City; and numerous friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Kathryn Vance.

Jack M. Wharam, 85, of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away peacefully on Saturday (April 26, 2008) at home with family at his side.

Jack Merchant Wharam was born on Oct. 8, 1922, at Mason City, to Owen and Aleta (Merchant) Wharam. He was a 1940 graduate of Mason City High School, where he met Roberta Huff. They were married in Rockwell, on June 21, 1942. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving two years, including overseas on Guam. Upon returning home to Iowa, after his honorable discharge, he was engaged in farming.

In 1959, they moved to Devils Lake, N.D., where he farmed for the next 30 years. In 1990, Jack and Roberta retired and moved to the Indianapolis, Ind., area.

A World War II veteran, Jack was active in Gideons International and a member of College Park Church, Indianapolis. For more than 20 years Jack shared his faith in Christ with youth at Fahocha Bible Camp, Devils Lake, N.D., and with residents of a McVille, N.D., nursing home for 18 years.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, often helping with special projects in their homes. His family benefited from both his carpentry skills and his Godly wisdom.

Survivors include Roberta, his wife of 65 years, children: Trudy (Dayton) Molendorp, Indianapolis, Ind.; Glen (Vernie) Wharam, Park River, N.D.; Terry (Keith) Rae, Laurel, Mont.; and Tracy (Bob) Blazek, Crookston, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren, and sister, Ellen (Bert) Nelson, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Eva Martin and Margaretta Baago.

GREENE - Hoton F. Bellows, 86, of 101 S. Main St., Greene, died Sunday (April 27, 2008) at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Hoton F. Bellows will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 1, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with military honors conducted by Tack-Barnett Post 268, American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, where there will be a public scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church Thursday one hour before services.

Hoton Frederic Bellows was born Oct. 24, 1921, near Greene, Union Township, Floyd County, Iowa, a son of Emory and Katherine (Strickler) Bellows.

He received his education in the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1940.

On July 7, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Marine Corps. He served overseas from January to August 1945 serving in the Pacific Theater. He participated in the offensive and defensive action at Bougainville and Mariana Islands, Guam and Okinawa.

Following his honorable discharge on Oct. 2, 1945, he attended and graduated from the Cedar Rapids Barber College. He returned to Greene where he worked at the Faber Miller Barber Shop.

Hoton was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene as an infant on Oct. 24, 1921, and confirmed as an adult on Dec. 5, 1948. He was a faithful child of God, and served his church as an usher for many years.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis Wiebke on June 20, 1948, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vilmar. This union was blessed with two children.

Hoton was engaged as a barber in Greene for 53 years, cutting hair for several generations of families.

He was actively involved in the life of the community, and followed the Greene-North Butler athletic events.

He was a member of the Quarter Back Club, Sportsman Club, Greene Commercial Club and the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Living family members include two daughters: Rebecca (Kirk) Harman of Washington, Iowa, and Nancy (Richard) Ebling of Dougherty; six grandchildren: Derek (Julie) Ebling of Las Vegas, Nev., Brent (Mindy) Ebling of Maple Grove, Minn., Jeffrey Ebling of Ottumwa, Heather Harman of Chicago, Ill., Hayley Harman of Overland Park, Kan., Holly Harman of Iowa City; two sisters: Catherine Teeple of Greene and Pearletta (Loren) McRoberts of Greene; one brother-in-law Glenn (Margaret) Wiebke of Waterloo, and a sister-in-law: Charmaine Wiebke of Greene and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers: Max "Ozzie" Bellows, Emory Burdell "Streak" Bellows, and Melvin Bellows; and one sister, Leola Potter.

Lester Ervin, the son of Gabriel and Anna Marie (Sunde) Gabrielson, was born July 9, 1917, on a farm near St. Olaf, near Belmond.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Lester attended school in Belmond, graduating from Belmond High School in 1935.

Lester married Florence B. Mack on Aug. 29, 1942, at Storm Lake. They became the proud parents of five children.

Lester was a very hard worker. He farmed, drove school bus, operated a bulk tank truck for Hancock County Oil and worked for Central Soya.

As an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond Lester served on numerous boards and was a member of the Sons of Norway.

Lester enjoyed fishing, working outside, gardening, and he was well known as a good cook. He was also known as a very good dancer.

Florence died in 1979 and Lester retired from Central Soya in 1981. He then moved to Des Moines where he was employed by Hertz Rentals.

Lester enjoyed dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake and the Val Aire Ballroom in Des Moines.

Lester moved back to Britt where he resided until he moved to the Leinbach Apartments in Belmond for three years. He moved to the Westview Care Center in Britt in 2006.

Lester is survived by his children, Pamela (Donald) VanLaningham of Chandler, Ariz., Gayle (Louis) Smidt of Britt, Neil (Kathleen) Gabrielson of Britt, Mack (Cindy) Gabrielson of Clear Lake, Faye (Karen Fickenwirth) of Seattle, Wash., special companion, Palma Quandahl; grandchildren, Joy (Kent) Venton, Julie (Sonny) Wehrer, Jeffrey (Annette) Smidt, Sarah (Jayson) Keiper, Kimberly Smidt, Kurt (Christa) Gabrielson, Karen (Chris) Solien, Lori (Travis) Clendenen, Lisa (Dr. Christopher) VandeLune, Bonnie (Jay) Hiscocks, Jennifer (Dr. Steven) Tenold, Laurie (Robert) McKenna, Dr. Daniel (Lyndi) Gabrielson, Jay (Elizabeth) LeFevre, and Joshua (Lauren) Daniels; 30 great-grandchildren (three on the way); sister, Ruby Boller of Belmond; sister-in-law Marion Gabrielson of Belmond; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lester is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florence; sisters and spouses, Burley, Liz (George Waddington), Beulah (Ed Reasoner), and Ruth (Wes Boller); brothers and spouses, Tolford (Agnes), Gerhard, Norman (Marian, Alta), and Elmer (Shirley); and brother-in-law, Kenny Boller.

COLUMBUS, Miss.- Eugene R. "Gene" Gjerde, 72,died Monday (April 28, 2008) at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2, at Columbus Air Force Base Chapel with Chaplin Rick Montoya officiating. The United States Air Force Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. Full military honors will follow the service.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, at Memorial Funeral Home, Columbus, Miss.

Mr. Gjerde was born on April 23, 1936, in Crystal Lake to the late Lloyd T. Gjerde and Florence Bergman Knapper.

He was a 1954 graduate of Woden High School in Woden.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1955 until his retirement in August 1977, and served in the Vietnam War.

After his military service he worked at various maintenance jobs at Columbus Air Force Base and attended the base chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Judy L. Gjerde of Columbus, Miss.; daughter, Julie Jones of Tupelo Miss.; son, Curtis Gjerde (Lisa) of Caledonia, Miss.; mother, Florence Knapper of Britt; brother, Lloyd M. Gjerde (Alice) of Altoona; brother, Ronald K. Gjerde (Judy) of Billings, Mo.; sister, Jody Burma (Bill) of Woden; brother-in-law, John T. Gerdes (Lori) of Franklin, Tenn.; grandchildren, Hannah Gjerde, Nathan Cunningham, and Kristin Cunningham.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his brother Gregg Gjerde, and his son-in-law Doug Jones.

KANAWHA - Mildred "Mil" Brummund Holloway died Sunday (April 27, 2008) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. A celebration of her life will be held at a future date.

Mil was born in Kanawha on Oct. 8, 1913, to Herman and Lela (Young) Brummund. She had two brothers, John and Bob Brummund.

Mildred graduated from high school in Kanawha and attended Drake University in Des Moines. She graduated from the nursing program at Mercy Hospital in Mason City and later graduated with a masters in nursing from the University of California Los Angeles.

She worked as an obstetrical nurse for many years in the Los Angeles area.

Mildred became a professor of nursing having taught at Harbor College in Los Angeles. She was instrumental in starting the nursing program at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Calif.

It was during her work as a registered nurse that she met and married Boothby Holloway. They lived most of their married life in the Los Angeles area and to this union Mil and Boots had two sons, Sterling and Peter Holloway.

After the death of her husband, Mil moved back to Kanawha to be near her son Peter and his family and to participate in the family farming operation.

She later married Robert Clark of Kanawha.

Mildred remained active in the medical field serving as an emergency medical technician in Kanawha. She also was active on the Physician Search Committee, and served the community with the Saturday morning blood pressure clinics.

Nursing was a major part of Mildred's life, and she was an excellent role model for her daughter-in-law, Lissa, and granddaughter, Jennifer.

Mildred is survived by her son, Sterling and his wife, Vera, and their children, LeAnn Marino, Sterling Holloway, Robert Holloway and David Holloway, all of Auburn, Calif.; son, Peter and his wife, Lissa, of Kanawha and their children, Jennifer Weiland of Britt and Sarah Holloway of San Diego, Calif.; as well as nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Lela Brummund; brothers, John and Bob Brummund; husband Boothby Holloway; and second husband Robert Clark.

Memorials in Mildred's honor may be sent to the Kanawha EMTs.

FOREST CITY - Elsie Marie Johnson, 94, of Forest City, died Monday (April 28, 2008) at her home at Forest Plaza in Forest City.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Pastor Jerald Swanberg officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home and an hour prior to service at the church.

Elsie Marie Johnson, the daughter of Jens and Anna Andersen, was born on July 23, 1913, in Crystal Township, between Forest City and Crystal Lake.

She graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1931.

On June 14, 1932, she was united in marriage to William Johnson at her parent's home.

The couple began farming near Hayfield in 1940 and in 1959 moved to a farm west of Forest City.

They retired to Forest City in 1979.

Marie was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church, a charter member of the UMW and Circles and held offices in these organizations for many years.

She was active in many other clubs and worked tirelessly for the Kum Along Klub and the Senior Citizens Center before it was built.

She loved the Lord and people. She touched many people's lives with her love.

Marie was an avid reader and loved to bake and garden.

She is survived by two sons, Robert and wife, Martha, of Forest City and Gary and friend, Barbara McKinnon of Orlando, Fla.; two beloved granddaughters, Lisa Marie Johnson and her husband, Michael Haley, and their son, William Bryce Haley, all of Summerville, S.C., and Christina Ann Johnson and her fianc�e, Brad Bolte, and their son, Conner Michael Johnson-Bolte, all of Kissimmee, Fla. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William, seven brothers and twin brothers who died in infancy.

MASON CITY - Robert "Bob" D. Mahoney, 74, of Mason City, died Sunday (April 27, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by a scriptural wake service.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa.

Bob was born Aug, 9, 1933, on a farm near Westgate, Iowa. He was the son of John and Lillie (Grose) Mahoney and the third of five children.

He attended school at Westgate Public School and graduated from Maynard Consolidated High School in 1951. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1955 with a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry.

After college, Bob served in the U.S. Army as the reception officer of the Post Visitor's Bureau at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was honorably discharged from active duty and his reserve obligation with a rank of first lieutenant.

On Aug. 29, 1959, Bob was united in marriage to Marlene Campbell at St. Columbkilles Church in Varina, Iowa. They lived in Clarion for a short time and then moved to Mason City in 1966.

Bob spent his entire career as a salesman in the agricultural and transportation industries.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Bob enjoyed camping over the years as his children were growing up. His greatest interest was in meeting and visiting people. He enjoyed reading, fishing and traveling to many places in the United States and foreign countries. He especially enjoyed traveling with the 1st Citizens Heritage Club.

Bob's greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He took great interest and pride in their lives and achievements.

Bob is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marlene, and four children: Karen Bryan and husband, Curt (Seattle, Wash.), Cheryl Ahrenstorff and husband, Neal (Lakeville, Minn.), Colleen Coleman and husband, Patrick (Chicago, Ill.), and Craig Mahoney and wife, Michelle (West Des Moines). He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Carter, Daniel and Henry Bryan, Haley and Jordan Ahrenstorff, Daniel Coleman and John and Matthew Mahoney; his brother, Ray Mahoney and wife, Sue, of Oelwein; sister in-law, Gladys Mahoney of Oelwein; sister and brother in-law, Kathleen and Lew Smith of Ankeny, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Edward, Don and twin brother, Roy, at birth, and his mother and father in-law.
