He received his education in the Nashua schools, graduating in 1948.

On March 11, 1949, he was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Warrington at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. This union was blessed with three daughters. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

In 1949, James started farming the family farm near Nashua, where he grew up. Keeping the farm "in the family" was very important to him.

He became an independent truck driver in 1961. He was very thankful to his nephew for taking such good care of the family farm. Jim always said the "Good Old Lord always looked after me." He was proud to have trucked millions of miles remaining accident free.

Jim moved into Greene in 1961. He continued to drive trucks until he was forced to retire, for health reasons, in 1996.

Jim had a special love for the land, its trees and flowers. He spent a lot of time on his John Deere tractor, mowing his lawn so it would look "just right."

His life centered on his family and he would have done anything for his grandchildren. They will always remember cleaning and polishing grandpa's truck and trailer inside and out.

Jim was very supportive of the Greene community and its activities, especially the July 4 Fireworks and the Greene Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

Living family members include three daughters: Nancy (Steve) Simerson of Charles City, Jeanette (Johnny) Brezina of Papillon, Neb., Mary Jane (Dennis) Ross of Greene; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Ross of Waverly, Jeremy Simerson of Mason City, Patrick Ross of Oakdale, Minn., Jason Brezina of Omaha, Neb., Stacie Merta of Marion, Michael Ross of Clarksville, and Joey Brezina of Omaha, Neb.; eight great-grandchildren: Kyra Ross, Erika Ross, Bridget Ross, Chloe Ross, Olivia Ross, Rex Ross, Avery Merta, Aiden Merta; one sister Patricia McGregor of Nashua.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother-in-law, Malcolm McGregor.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the James Tefft Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Funeral services have been entrusted to Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, 641-823-4457.

Ferne Fay Melcher was born Aug. 25, 1915, in rural Clear Lake, the daughter of Oliver Perry Morton Brooks and Lillian Sophie Etchen Brooks. She graduated from Clear Lake High School.

She and Claytus E. Melcher were married in East Orange, N.J., on June 13, 1934. Early in the marriage she was a homemaker. In the 50s, she went to work for the Clear Lake Federal Savings and Loan and retired after 25 years.

She was active in the Clear Lake community with the Women's Club, the Clear Lake Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Park Chapter No. 35, and the National T.T.T Society, and was a charter member of Chapter AQ. She served as national president of the T.T.T. Society and in that capacity had lunch honoring national presidents of philanthropic groups at the White House during President Gerald Ford's term. She was noted for her entertaining book reviews, for moderating women's fashion shows, and for regular participation in church discussion groups and local issue programs.

After retiring to Florida, she and Claytus were instrumental in the effort by the residents of Flowerwood Club Park to purchase the park and thus keep it out of the hands of developers. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the park for many years.

Ferne is survived by her daughter, Linda M. Neese of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and son, Mark L. Melcher of Mt. Jackson, Va.; five grandchildren: Julia Schipper, Thomas Schipper, Mark (Carol) Melcher, Paula (Mark) Johnson and Deborah (Michael) Murphy; and eight great-grandchildren.
