Clara Helen Elizabeth Miller

Clara Helen Elizabeth Miller, at 92, left this world on Sunday (April 6, 2008) from the IOOF Home in Mason City due to complications of dementia.

With her children by her side, Clara finally moved into her "mansion just over the hilltop."

Clara, one of six children, was born June 23, 1915, and raised in Mason City by her parents, Gustave and Louise Elizabeth Ruhnke. She was the proud mother of 16 children and grandmother to 38, great-grandmother to 63 and great-great-grandmother to two.

Besides raising a proud and productive family, Clara was a dedicated lifetime member of her church, The Salvation Army, where she taught Sunday School for 43 years, attended the women's group (The Home League), worked at The Salvation Army Thrift Store and was recognized by many in her Salvation Army uniform as she sold The War Cry to raise money for the poor and needy.

Between her many commitments, Clara volunteered countless hours with The League of Mercy, visiting the lonely, the sick, the old and dying in area nursing homes. Clara also worked alongside her mother for many years doing housekeeping for many fine homes in Mason City and Clear Lake until she assumed the business on her own. When she wasn't working, Clara could often be found volunteering her time at the Community Kitchen of North Iowa preparing and serving meals for the hungry.

Clara's family and friends celebrated her 90th birthday on June 18, 2005, when she was crowned by her family as Queen for A Day. Sen. Amanda Ragan presented a joint declaration of honor by the State of Iowa Senate and the House of Representatives to Clara. Mason City Mayor Jean Marinos issued her proclamation of honor as well.

Clara is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Harrison Miller, on Feb. 26, 1984; her adult sons, Lorain (Bud) Miller on March 28, 1992, and Gene Miller on Nov. 6, 1992; three infant children who died at birth, a son on May 30, 1944; Clara Diane on June 16, 1956; and Denise Ann on Sept. 13, 1961; and two great-grandchildren.

Left on this earth to live as Clara taught them are her children, from oldest to youngest, Harrison Jr. (John and Elaine) Miller of Mason City, Gerald (Jerry and Francine) Miller of Waterloo, Francis (Gwen) Miller of Mason City, Jackie (Della) Miller of Des Moines, Dane (Janet) Miller of Parkersburg, Dwight (Carol) Miller of Mason City, Bobby (Bob and Doris) Miller of Brandon, S.D., Louise Simonton of Parker, Colo., Rodney (Rod and Bill) Miller of Minneapolis, Minn., Elizabeth (Liz) Miller of Ankeny and June (Bob) Black of Mason City.

Clara's children blessed her with 99 grandchildren and great-grandchildren who survive her.

Her sister, Martha Meyer, 95, and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Ruhnke, both of Mason City, also survive Clara. They shared many years of happiness together.

Clara's Promotion to Glory will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at The Salvation Army at 747 Village Green Drive Southwest, Mason City. Her sons, Salvation Army Corps Sgt. Maj. Dwight Miller and Pastor Jerry Miller, will officiate. A graveside farewell following the service at Memorial Park Cemetery will lay Clara to rest next to her son and husband. Friends and family are welcomed to celebrate Clara's life at a luncheon at The Salvation Army immediately following the graveside service.

Friends and family may say their good-byes to Clara between 7 and 9 p.m. today, April 8, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and beginning at 10 a.m. before the service at The Salvation Army.

Memorials may be made to the Miller family who will select one of Clara's worthy causes to honor her.

All of Clara's children will be forever grateful for their wonderful mother. Those who knew Clara will always remember her devotion to God, her hard work and sacrifice for her family and others, and her love of the old hymn, "I've got a mansion, just over the hilltop ..."

That's where you'll find her.

Peter Pals Jr.

BELMOND - Peter Pals Jr., 90, of Belmond, died Saturday (April 5, 2008) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services for Pete Pals will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond, with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery. Graveside military rites will conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Visitation for Pete Pals will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, April 9, at the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond, and one hour prior to the services at the funeral home in Belmond.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be given to United Methodist Church in Goodell.

Peter Pals Jr. was born at Alexander, on April 15, 1917. He was the eighth child of Peter and Katherine (Bos) Pals and was the last surviving member of his family.

As a child, Peter lived briefly with his family in Port Arthur, Texas, where the other members of the Bos family were living, but after five years, the family returned to Alexander, where Peter attended school and grew to manhood.

Peter served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped with the development of Beed's Lake at Hampton. Later he joined the Army Air Forces and served in the Special Services Division in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

On Nov. 30, 1942, Peter married Lola Shahan at Baltimore, Md. After spending some time in Baltimore together, Lola returned to Belmond and Peter shipped out to Europe. The hardships of war for the young soldier were further compounded by the unexpected death of his wife. While Peter was stationed in Ireland, Lola suddenly died on May 26, 1944, at the Hampton hospital of complications from the birth of a baby daughter, Mary Katherine. Three months later Peter received the news that his father had died.

Having attained the rank of sergeant, Peter was honorably discharged after the war and returned to the Belmond area where he worked for Charles Showalter and Harold Thompson.

On Aug. 8, 1947, Peter married Darline Kruse of Belmond and the couple began farming the Kruse farm at Hickory Grove northwest of Belmond. After Darline's death in March 1977, Peter continued farming at Hickory Grove and lived there for several years after his retirement.

On Nov. 14, 1997, Peter married Gladys Shahan and the couple resided in Belmond.

Peter enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Besides farming, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, visiting and cooking. At one time, Peter was pleased to have been selected as "Cook of the Week," a weekly feature in the Belmond Independent.

The farm was the focal point for many social gatherings. Peter had a host of friends and he always had time for a good visit with family, neighbors, and the men who came to hunt in Hickory Grove. The coffee was always on and there was always room for one more around his kitchen table.

Blessed with a sharp memory, Peter enjoyed telling about his early experiences, especially as a boy in Port Arthur, his experiences as a soldier during World War II, and the early history of Hickory Grove. Peter was especially proud of the fact that he had met many famous dignitaries, including Franklin Roosevelt, and had shaken hands with Winston Churchill on three different occasions. Peter was also pleased to have been one of the personal drivers for Jimmy Doolittle.

His wife, Gladys, and his daughter Mary K. Nelson, both of Belmond, survive Peter. He also has two granddaughters, Ann (Patrik) Nelson and Amber (Trent) Rosendahl, both of Belmond; and six great-grandchildren: Bridgette, Elisabeth and Zachariah Nelson and Benjamin, Alexandria and James Rosendahl. Also surviving are three stepchildren, Ronald (Linda) Shahan, Kathlyn Shahan, Edwin Ray (Nancy) Shahan, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Peter was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shea Ranae Nelson; and by a great-grandson, Jonathan Craig Nelson; his wives, Lola and Darline; his parents; his brothers, Hans, Hilko, Herman and Joe Pals; and his sisters, Kate (Menno) Frohling, Grace (Will) Tinkey and Henrietta (Frank) Ostendorf Hertel; a stepson, Charles Krivachek, also preceded Peter in death.

In 1968, with son Kelly and three other handicapped children, a day care center was started in their home. The "WEE ARC CENTER" grew from their family room to the many facilities now operating under the "Krysilis" name. In past years, these programs were named "Winnebago Handicapped Services" and "North Central Human Services."

Today, Krysilis is the second largest employer in Forest City and serves the needs of many disabled children and adults. Three of the homes built in Forest City after Kelly's death are on Kelly's Court, a street named as a tribute to Kelly and to Orvin and Wanda's tireless work for the disabled. Orvin and Wanda were also founding members of Handicap Village in Clear Lake. This program is now known as Opportunity Village.

In 1978, Orvin and Wanda moved to Ames where they owned and operated the Singer Sewing Center. In 1981, after his separation from Wanda, Orvin moved to Downey, Calif. He and Wanda, who had also moved to Downey, remained close friends. Together they shared in the lives of their children and grandchildren.

For the last 26 years, Orvin worked at and eventually bought A-Rodgers Vacuum and Sewing Center in Bellflower, Calif. Orv's customers affectionately referred to him as "Mr. Rodgers" because he was such a kind and caring businessman, friend and overall good person.

After living such a full and blessed life, Orvin died peacefully on March 17, 2008, at his home in Downey, Calif. May God Bless father, grandfather, husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend & companion Orvin Schnebly eternally! He was a blessing to all of us.
