Thomas P. "Tommy" Curran

Thomas P. "Tommy" Curran, 70, of Richfield, Minn., passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Friday (March 28, 2008) after a courageous battle with diabetes and cancer.

He was the husband of Julie Haight-Curran and the father of Kathleen Curran. Julie and Tom celebrated 31 years of marriage on Oct. 25, 2007. Tom was born Aug. 8, 1937, in Detroit, Mich., the eldest son of the late Paul and Mary Alice (Fye) Curran of Royal Oak, Mich.

Tommy was an amazing man of uncommon intelligence, good humor, far reaching curiosity and generosity. He was a student his entire life continually following new areas of interest while digging deeper into old familiar realms. The constants in his life were the love of his wife and daughter, music and chess. He loved talking with people about nearly anything conjuring up story after story relating to the topic at hand. His knowledge of jazz, in particular be-bop, was legendary having grown up in Detroit at the knees of the great Detroit bop piano players. Whenever Tommy played a crowd would gather to hear the master at work. He was the real deal.

Tommy's chess playing was described by opponent and friend, John Loftus, as theoretical and analytical. Tommy's original mentor, Shane O'Neill, described Tommy's style as resilient. One of Tom's last winning games is a marvel of creativity, full of unexpected turns which ultimately bewildered his opponent - who thought till the end he had Tommy rolled up. Tommy knew better ultimately outwitting his opponent.

Favorite times with Tommy were our numerous road trips. It was a time that we had all to ourselves. One of Tom's recent interests was geology. Trips out west with geology book in hand, camera at the ready to shoot the next anticline and argue endlessly about batholiths made the trips fascinating. Speaking of arguing - if you couldn't cite your sources, you were in pretty big trouble.

Never was Tom happier than when he could spend time and talk with his daughter, Katie. Tom's pride in Katie didn't have to do with what Katie did, but how she did it. He taught her to think analytically, critically, thoroughly; to be confident in her decisions and to follow through. He loved her with all his heart.

Tommy touched many people. He was one of the few people who could help you through a thorny problem, give you concrete advice that would produce results, give you courage and the strength to face the situation head on. He stayed in your corner believing in you until you could believe in yourself. He gave of his knowledge and intelligence freely, it was his gift to you. We are all better people because we knew Tommy.

Tom earned a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University, a masters degree from Michigan State University (where he also studied for a doctorate in philosophy), and a law degree (JD) from the University of Iowa.

Tommy's professional career included positions as a legal editor and research scientist with West Publishing in Egan, Minn., retiring in 2000, university lecturer at Grambling University and professional musician.

Survivors include his wife, Julie; daughter, Kathleen (and husband John) Curran-Lavendoski, of Austin, Texas; brother, James (and wife Patricia) of Warren, Ohio; sister, Sarah (and husband Jeff) Paige of North Carolina; mother-in-law, Sis Haight, of Mason City; bothers-in-law, Alan Haight of Mason City and Balkuu Kumangai of Palau, Micronesia; many nieces, nephews and their children; and many cousins from the Curran, Fye, Hogan and Rooney branches of his family.

Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave. S., Edina, 952-924-4100. In true Minnesota style, please bring an anecdote to share. A reception will follow at the family home.

Memorials can be made to the Tom Curran Memorial Jazz Fund c/o US Bank, 7001 France Ave S., Edina, MN 55435, or the Richfield Fire Department, 6700 Portland Ave. S., Richfield, MN 55423.

William Cerny Jr.

It is with great sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of William Cerny Jr., 51, on Sunday (March 30, 2008) at his home.

Son of William V. (JoAnne) Cerny Sr., Wausau, Wis., and Sally (Gene) Ward, Mason City, he was a graduate of Wausau East High School.

Bill, fondly known as "Billy," enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and spent quality time with family and friends while on salmon fishing trips and trips to Canada and northern Wisconsin. He would often be heard saying, "I'm heading up north." Bill also enjoyed many years of hunting and was always on the lookout for that "big buck." He usually had a story to tell after spending a weekend up north with his longtime friends. He loved to travel to Virginia Beach, Va., in summers with his extended family. His family has fond memories of him relaxing underneath his umbrella in his beach chair. In summer you could see Bill going for walks in his neighborhood, and he was looking forward to bike rides on his new mountain bike. He also had a new passion for landscaping and took pride in developing the yard around his home with the assistance of family and friends.

Bill loved his work as a realtor for Keller Williams and took pride in finding just the right homes for his clients. It was well known that you could call on Bill anytime if you had a question that needed a quick answer. He was always willing to provide assistance in any way he could. He was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schofield, Wis., and enjoyed participating in a morning Bible study.

He was known for his gentle spirit and always took the time to be a great listener. Bill was truly invested in the lives of his family and friends through his generosity and love. "Dollar Dad" was always willing to put his two daughters first and encouraged them continually. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandson, who brought out his youthfulness and kept a smile on his face. He was a beloved son, father, brother, uncle, grandpa and friend. His memory will last forever, and he will be dearly missed by all those who knew him and were blessed by his life.

Survivors include his parents, William V. (JoAnne) Cerny Sr., Wausau, and Sally (Gene) Ward, Mason City; his children, Jessica (Kenneth) Bloom, Wausau, and Rachel (David) Griffin, Lombard, Ill.; one grandson, Gavin Bloom; his siblings, Laura (James) Lalor, Mason City, Stafford (Linda) Cerny, Wausau, and Paul (Sarah) Kaler, St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Collier Cerny.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, April 3, at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schofield, with the Rev. Ryan Wolfe officiating.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services today at the church.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in William Cerny Jr.'s name.
