Miller-Littman, Joanne Helen Moen "Joan"
|
|
|
Joanne's
life
began
Oct. 18,
1939, in
Meredith
(The
Music
Man)
Wilson's
magical
River
City,
otherwise
known as
Mason
City.
She is
second
of three
children
to John
Nicolai
and
Pauline
(Brown)
Moen.
Her
older
sister,
Nancy,
of Cedar
Falls,
with her
husband,
Jon
Bramhall,
take
pleasure
in
retirement
while
wintering
in Gulf
Port,
Ala.
Jim, her
brother,
and his
wife,
Cathy,
are busy
raising
Pulik in
Danville,
Calif.
Growing
up in
Mason
City,
she
graduated
from
Mason
City
High
School
in 1957.
After
graduation,
she
headed
west to
attend
Colorado
Woman's
College
in
Denver,
Colo.,
graduating
with an
Associate
of Arts
Degree
in
Accounting
in 1959.
She
received
a
Bachelor
of Arts
Degree
in
Elementary
Education
from the
University
of
Denver,
Denver,
Colo.,
in 1965.
Joanne
started
her long
career
as a
teacher
at
McElwain
Elementary
School,
Adams 12
Five
Star
School.
In 1972,
she
earned a
Master
of Arts
Degree
in
Elementary
Education
from the
University
of
Denver,
Denver,
Colo.
Seeking
a
change,
she
became a
licensed
Colorado
Real
Estate
Broker
in 1976
and took
a
yearlong
sabbatical
from
teaching
to
pursue
real
estate
full
time.
Realizing
her
first
passion,
she
returned
to
teaching
until
her
retirement
in 1992.
While
attending
CWC, she
met her
first
husband,
Charles
Miller,
and
married
on Jan.
19,
1960.
After
two sons
and 11
years of
marriage,
she is
divorced
in 1971.
She
spent
the next
13 years
focusing
on
raising
two
wonderful
boys. In
1979,
she met
Mr.
Right,
Harry
Littman
and the
two are
married
on Aug.
11,
1984, in
Aurora,
Colo.,
at their
residence.
Upon
retiring,
Joanne
and
Harry
move
downtown
into the
Neusteter
Building
and
became
urban
dwellers.
Here she
discovered
her new
hobby
and
became a
board
member
and
treasurer
for the
Neusteters
Building
Condo
Association
Inc.
In March
of this
year,
the
Board of
Directors
unanimously
voted a
resolution
declaring
an
office/conference
area to
be
permanently
named in
honor of
Joanne
and a
plaque
acknowledging
her
efforts
and
achievements
to be
affixed
for all
to see.
Dec. 12,
1992,
and Feb.
17,
1995,
are two
dates
that
brought
such joy
to
Joanne,
the
birth of
her
grandchildren,
Kayley
now 15
and
Colton
at 13.
As
Grandma
Jojo,
she was
always
involved
in their
activities,
their
hopes
and
dreams
and even
learned
how to
get out
there
and toss
a
football.
Joanne
set
aside a
great
portion
of the
house as
a refuge
and
place
where
all of
her
grandchildren
would
come to
play,
learn,
spend
the
night
and
eventually
begin
short
explorations
of the
16th
Street
Mall.
Joanne
had an
account
on the
computer
so the
children
were
able to
buy that
latest
"had to
have"
tune.
Dancers,
singers,
and
musicians
are
Kayley
and
Colton
along
with
some
amazing
computer
skills.
Joanne
saw to
it that
they
were
able to
attend
computer
camp at
Denver
University
during
the
summer.
As the
family
expanded,
more
wonderful
people
came
Joanne's
way.
Todd
found
his
special
one in
Marie
Madrid
who
provided
a
ready-made
family
of Danny
and
Chris.
Two
adorable
little
boys,
who are
now men
beginning
to make
their
way in
the
world.
Tim
lucked
out
marrying
Andrea
who
brought
Rhiannon
Tran to
round
out the
group.
Joanne
loved to
travel
and
explore
new
places.
She kept
file
folders
filled
with
brochures
of
places
she had
been.
However,
she and
Harry
did get
hooked
on New
York
City,
and
Laguna
Beach.
New York
held the
fascination
of the
buildings,
the
bustling
activity
and she
was
always
ready to
follow
Harry
into the
nearest
church
to check
out the
pipe
organs.
Laguna
was the
place to
go
"vege."
She
would
get
caught
up on
her
reading
and
wave-watching
at the
Surf and
Sand
hotel.
One
piece of
music we
heard
today
was
played
by Harry
at
Joanne
and
Harry's
wedding.
Harry
was busy
as the
groom
and
assistant
organist.
The
second
piece
was
played
and
recorded
by a
dear
friend
at a
recital
in New
York
that
Joanne
had
hoped
for
since
she had
heard it
before
on
recordings.
She was
not
disappointed
and
called
it her
ultimate
slush
music.
Two of
Joanne's
defining
qualities
were
demonstrated
during
that
fateful
day when
she
learned
of her
terminal
cancer.
Her
willingness
to
accept
difficult
circumstances
when she
told the
doctor
"what
is, is"
and in
always
thinking
of
others,
she
expressed
compassion
for the
doctor,
in her
words "I
feel
sorry
for you,
having
to tell
people
stuff
like
this."
Family
dinners
and
outings
were
Joanne's
pleasure.
Her
family
was
everything
to her.
Joanne's
only
weak
moment
during
the past
2 months
occurred
briefly
when she
realized
that she
wouldn't
be
around
to see
the
grandchildren
grow up.
We can
all take
comfort
in the
knowledge
that she
was a
truly
happy
person
and her
philosophy
of "what
is - is"
helped
her see
clearly
and
enjoy
all her
days.

Becker, Dale A. |
|
|
MASON CITY - Dale A. Becker, 77, of 640 S. Van Buren Ave., Mason City, died Tuesday evening (April 22, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the Trinity Lutheran Church 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Senior Pastor Jim Magelssen assisted by Father Dennis Cahill officiating.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 until 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Dale A. Becker Memorial Fund.
Following services his body will be cremated under the care of Fullerton Funeral Home.
Dale was born one of five sons to Alwin and Maureen nee Hanson Becker on March 19, 1931, in LeMars, Iowa. He graduated from LeMars Community Schools in 1949. He continued his education attending Wartburg College and graduating with a B.A. degree in education. In 1959 he received his Masters Degree in Speech and English from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He taught high school in Buffalo Center, Lake Mills and Clear Lake.
Dale joined Mason City Junior College as a professor in 1963 and retired from NIACC in 1997 after 34 years. His love of teaching was reciprocated by appreciative students. While working at NIACC he was instrumental in the design, construction and operations of the beautiful NIACC auditorium.
Dale very much enjoyed his vegetable gardening and was an organic gardener long before it was "cool." Dale and his brothers enjoyed their annual fishing trips as founding members of the "Fishing and Liars Club." During his school years he performed magic and balancing acts with his brother as "DALO the Magnificent." Dale said he would join the circus when he grew up, but he never really grew up. He was a faithful Hawkeye fan, and religiously worked his crossword puzzle each day. His greatest passion in life was his family.
Dale married Elizabeth vonFischer on Aug. 16, 1953, and to this union three children were born. On July 11, 1984, he was united in marriage to Sally O'Harrow in their backyard in Mason City. Twenty years later they renewed their vows once again in the backyard with Father Dennis Cahill, Sally's cousin. Many will remember Dale's wit, wisdom and remarkable modesty regarding his achievements.

MASON CITY - Cletus Joseph Fandel, 89, of 620 Briarstone No.30, Mason City, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday (April 20, 2008).
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a Scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m.
Cletus was born on March 19, 1919, at Rodman, the son of John Frederick Fandel and Dorothy (Esser) Fandel. Cletus received his education at Holy Family School in Mason City. Cletus was a member of the American Legion, a scoutmaster, was a executive vice president of the Newman Booster Club at its inception, and he had been active in the Democratic Party as precinct committee chairman. He was an instrumental force in organizing the "North End" picnic get-to-gethers, as well as an instrumental force in organizing the Holy Family Alumni breakfast group. He was an avid sports fan, and took pride in driving the Holy Family players to their sports games before buses came to the scene.
Cletus joined the U.S. Army and was a military policeman, which he was very proud of.
Cletus enjoyed going to the Surf Ballroom at Clear Lake, joining his many friends for dancing to the Big Bands. The thing Cletus liked most was socializing. He was known for his robust zest for life, innate ability to speak his mind, infectious sense of humor and devilish charm.
Cletus and Laurel loved entertaining and hosting parties for their many friends, and their family at their homes in Plymouth and Mason City. They enjoyed their retirement, traveling to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the winter months, and reuniting with their Iowa friends. They enjoyed their card party groups in Plymouth, and enjoyed walking the mall, making and meeting old and new friends, their "special" Friday night group gatherings for laughs and dinner, and Sunday mornings after Mass, with coffee and donuts (he always had two!)
Cletus married Laurel Jean Tessum at the Church of Incarnation in Minneapolis, Minn., on June 25, 1949. They were happily blessed with three sons, C.J. and wife, Bunny, of Grizzly Flats, Calif., David and wife, Jackie, of Mason City, and Brad and wife, Sherrie, of Garner. They were then blessed by three daughters, Cindy Fandel of Mason City, Kelly and husband, Dave, Kratz of Clear Lake and Kimberly Garner of Clear Lake. Cletus loved his grandchildren and they thoroughly enjoyed hearing the many hilarious stories of Grandpa back in the day.
Grandchildren are Kristina Miramon, Nicole and husband, Eric, Umbarger, Shae and husband, J.J., Thompson, Joe and Ashley Fandel, Misty, Cody and Hailey Fandel, Hollie and Summer Hoffarth, Kelly and husband, Neal, Neuberger, and Jon Ehresmann, Joshua and wife, Kelly, Kratz, Andrea and husband, Mike, Frantz, Amber and husband, Ryan, Allen and Calan Kratz, Dylan Garner and Melissa Peterson Garner. Great-grandchildren are Lindzie, Sydney, Grace and Jake Umbarger, Payton Rae Hoffarth, Caden and Samuel Kratz, Gabriel and Cole Frantz and Cabot and Jett Neuberger.
Cletus had many other family members on the Fandel/Tessum side that were deeply embedded in his heart. Family meant everything to him and what memories of an 89-year lifetime he has been blessed by!
Cletus' bride of 59 years, Laurel, made his life completely and beautifully fulfilled. In their 59 years together they had shared a lifetime of deep love, joyous laughter and much happiness. Their treasured memories of so many, many friends, old and new, and of family made Cletus's 89 years lovingly complete. He celebrated life to its fullest. As you celebrate Clete's life, know he is celebrating you!

Fandel, Cletus Joseph
|
|
|
MASON CITY - Cletus Joseph Fandel, 89, of 620 Briarstone No. 30, Mason City, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday (April 20, 2008).
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, April 25, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St.
