Anna Bjelica

CHARLES CITY — Anna Bjelica, 85, of Charles City, died Sunday (Nov. 25, 2007) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Anna Bjelica will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with the Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main, Charles City. Members of the Lay Carmelites will lead the rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a vigil Scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass on Saturday at the church.

Anna Bacher Bjelica was born Feb. 19, 1922, at Hundham, Germany, the daughter of Johann and Gertraude Bacher. In 1948 she was united in marriage to Marko Bjelica in Munich, Germany. With two small children in tow, Anna and Marko came to America where they hoped for the opportunity to farm.

Anna supported her husband and family by living modestly on the farm. She was known for her love of the Catholic faith. Those who visited her home experienced German hospitality. Anna was very generous by sharing her favorite raisin bread.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lay Carmelites, Rosary Society, Saint Theresa Circle, Chat/A/Bit Club and the Lady’s German Club of Charles City.

Her interests included baking, gardening, traveling to Germany to see family, playing 500 with friends and family, dancing with Marko, attending daily Mass and personal prayer of the Rosary for family members.

Living family members include three sons, Nicholas Bjelica of Charles City, Paul (Margaret) Bjelica of Kansas City, Mo., and Thomas (Roxann) Bjelica of Charles City; a son-in-law, Steven Exline of Charles City; 10 grandchildren: Michelle, Susan, Heidi, Kristina, Adam, Alex, Elizabeth, Hanna, Evan and Angelina; three great-grandchildren: Sirus, Mitra and Armon; one brother, Andel (Cathi) Bacher of Miesbach, Germany; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marko on Jan. 19, 1991; one son, Peter Bjelica, on Sept. 12, 2001; one daughter, Mary Ann Exline, on Jan. 13, 1997; a sister, Gertraude Weiland; and two brothers, Josef and Hans Bacher.

Dennis Lynn Hall

Dennis Lynn Hall, 63, of 11619 Burt St. Omaha, Neb., died Friday (Nov. 16, 2007) at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Patti Aurand officiating.

Dennis was born May 23, 1944, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Michael and Loraine (Kirk) Hall. He spent his childhood in Lake Mills and graduated in 1962.

He married Bonnie Berg on July 15, 1967, and had two children, Jeffrey and Jesslyn. Dennis began his railroad career working for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in Mason City.

On Dec. 1, 1991, Dennis married Linda Cooper in Hawaii. Dennis’ position with the railroad required them to transfer to Ames, Chicago and finally Omaha, where he retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1999 after 34 years of service.

Dennis was an avid sports fan and enjoyed participating in softball, bowling and especially golf. He loved spending time on Clear Lake boating and just being near the water. Cars were a passion for Dennis and he often could be found in his garage (sanctuary) tinkering with anything that had a motor.

Dennis loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and was very proud of them all. The last few years, Dennis and Linda spent their winters in Arizona where Dennis could pursue his golfing year round. He enjoyed a good steak, political conversations, a good laugh, and will be remembered for his great sense of humor and mild nature.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Linda, of Omaha, Neb.; son Jeffrey and wife, Melissa (Kavars) Hall, of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter Jesslyn Hall of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Joshua and Sophie Hall, Emanuelle Hall.; sister, Barbara Hall of Fairmont, Minn.; sister-in-law, Judy Hall of Albert Lea, Minn..; family friend, Judy Lohrenz of Fairmont, Minn.; and many additional relatives and friends.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and brother David, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law.

 


Newton Ford Bryant

WESLACO, Texas — Newton Ford Bryant, 75, passed away on Sunday (Nov. 25, 2007) at his residence after his struggle with his illness.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1932, to W.H. Bryant Sr. and Ella Ford Bryant in Clarion, Iowa. He attended schools in Mason City and served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He married Darlene Werstein in 1956.

Newton and Darlene made their home in Mason City where they raised four children, Debra, Jim, Julie and Ellen, and their grandson Daniel.

Newt worked as a painter/carpenter. In 1970 he went to work at Armour where he retired in 1995.

He enjoyed the TV and “HIS COUCH,” and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, and a fan of any other team that played against the Minnesota Vikings! He also enjoyed gardening, woodcrafts, jig-saw puzzles, family holiday meals and visiting with friends at the Cozy Corner.

In 1996, Newt started wintering in Weslaco, Texas, and in 2002 moved there permanently.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Bryant of Weslaco, Texas; children, Debra (Bill) Baker of Mason City, Jim of St. Louis, Mo., and Ellen of Clear Lake; and grandson, Daniel of Weslaco, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Lane, Riley and Lily; one sister, Clarice Christensen; four brothers, Bill, John Dee, Bert and Jin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, W.H. Bryant Sr. and Ella Ford Bryant; daughter, Julie; grandson, John Robert; three brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at Rio Valley Estates with Pastor Randy Nichols officiating. The Bryant family will at a later date have a memorial service in Iowa.

Charles Raymond Yuhouse

CLEAR LAKE — Charles Raymond Yuhouse, 87, of 809 Sixth Place N., Clear Lake, died Saturday (Nov. 24, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A time of gathering with family and friends will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Inurnment with military honors will be held at a later time in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Family suggests memorials to the Charles Raymond Yuhouse Memorial Fund.

Charles was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Mason City, the son of John and Georgia Alta (Collins) Yuhouse. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1938.

He worked for A&P Grocery in Mason City. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served during World War II. Following the service he moved back to Mason City and worked for A&P Grocery and later was transferred to Cedar Falls as store manager.

He married Norma Treloar June 29, 1947, in Albert Lea, Minn., and in 1950 they moved to Clear Lake, where he worked for Northern Natural Gas until he retired in 1982.

He enjoyed his many fishing trips to Canada, gardening, especially sharing his tomatoes with friends, and volunteering at Opportunity Village with help planting seeds in the spring. He was well known for his bean soup that he would make during a blizzard and go around and share with his friends.

After his retirement he enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona and his many trips over to the Mississippi River to be with his family.

He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 0222.

Charles is survived by his wife, Norma Yuhouse, of Clear Lake; daughter Sandra Wolfe and her husband, Robert, of Clear Lake; son Jim Yuhouse and his wife, Sally, of Harpers Ferry; two brothers, Lavern Yuhouse and Robert Yuhouse and his wife, Dixie; and sister, Joanne Rolland and her husband, Dave, all of St. Paul, Minn.; brother-in-law, Tom Treloar and his wife, Pat, and sister-in-law Betty Grell, all of Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother George Yuhouse, sister Amy Edriss and her husband, Roland, and a brother-in-law, Reuben Grell.

Patricia Jane Schintgen

MASON CITY — Patricia Jane Schintgen, 67, of 1423 N. Monroe Ave., died Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor George Johnson, Harvestime Church, officiating. Inurnment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Michael George Sheridan

Michael George Sheridan, 61, of Topeka, Kan., suddenly passed away Wednesay (Nov. 21, 2007) at his home.

Mike was born in Mason City, Iowa, on Sept. 1, 1946. He was the son of Phillip Johnson Sheridan and Carol Elaine Sheridan.

He graduated in 1964 from Mason City High School in Mason City. Following high school he was an entrepreneur in several different businesses including a youth-oriented recreation business in Algona, manager of a smorgasbord in Omaha, Neb., and he traveled and lived in Australia where he worked in sales for an Australian telephone company.

Following his return to the U.S., Mike managed and operated a food catering service in the Omaha area. Mike’s primary career was in real estate sales in Omaha, Neb., San Antonio, Texas, and Topeka, Kan. For the past 15 years Mike operated a small residential and commercial mechanical service company in Topeka.

Michael had many friends and will always be remembered as an honest, caring person with a keen wit and extraordinary sense of humor. He was deeply loved by all his family. He was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church, Topeka, Kansas.

Mike is survived by his daughter, Stacey M. Sheridan of Papillion, Neb.; former wife, Stephanie Gass; sister Suzanne and her husband, Ronald Factor, of Marksville, La.; sister Cynthia and her husband, Sherman Berg, of Blair, Neb.; twin brother Dr. Richard Sheridan and his wife, Frances, of Grass Valley, Calif.; brother Daniel Basgall of Cowpens, S.C. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj, of Topeka, Kan.; 15 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Ryan Michael Sheridan; parents, Phillip J. Sheridan and Carol E. Basgall; and sister Elaine “Sherry” Hiszczynskyj.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka, Kan.

Mabel Sturgeon

CLARION — Mabel Sturgeon, 88, of Clarion died Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2007) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the United Church of Rowan with Pastor Nancy Hofmeister officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Verna Hope

OGDEN — Verna Hope, 74, of 331 S.W. Seventh St. Place, Ogden, and formerly of Hampton, died Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The casket will be closed. Visitation continues one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Augustana Lutheran Church.

Verna was born April 30, 1933, in Hampton, the daughter of Victor and Anna (Kolbe) Garrison. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1951.

Verna married George Hope in Hampton on Sept. 18, 1955. The couple lived in many states and countries during the first 20 years of their marriage. For the last 30 years, Verna and George lived in Boone and Ogden.

She was employed at the Woodward Resource Center in Woodward as a resident treatment worker for 10 years.

Verna was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Verna is survived by her husband, George, of Ogden; two sons, Thomas Hope of Des Moines and Michael Hope and his wife, Susan, of Waukee; a daughter, Theresa Jones and her husband, James, of Boone; a brother, Howard Garrison and his wife, Rosene, of Brownsville, Texas; and five grandchildren, Andrew Jones, Kristina Jones and Sarah Jones, all of Boone, and Anna Hope and Jonathan Hope, both of Waukee.

Hildegarde L. Staff

OSAGE — Hildegarde L. Staff, 94, of Osage, died Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

There will be a time for lunch and fellowship at the church following the memorial service.

According to her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School.

Evelyn Margaret Stockwell

CLEAR LAKE — Evelyn Margaret Stockwell, 95, died on Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Evelyn was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Christian and Sarah (Solsaa) Anderson. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1932.

On May 28, 1938, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Stockwell at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. She and Kenneth owned and operated Stockwell Radio and T.V. in Clear Lake.

Evelyn loved to bake and read poetry. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Evelyn is survived by one daughter, Brenda Pringle and her husband, John, of Ankeny; three grandchildren: Scott Pringle, of Hattiesburg, Miss., Tammy Fejfar and her husband, Jeremy, of Holmen, Wis., and Nicole Colixtro and her husband, Juan, of Charles City; five great-grandchildren: Ashley, Ana Marie, Juan, Elena Calixtro and Caleb Fejfar; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth (July 30, 2000); her parents; one sister, Agnes Haner; two brothers, Ralph Anderson and Raymond Anderson; and one son, Kenneth Alan Stockwell.

IOWA FALLS — Darlene J. Pommrehn, 76, of Iowa Falls, died Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Burial will be in the Alden Cemetery in Alden.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church.

Patricia Jane Schintgen

MASON CITY — Patricia Jane Schintgen, 67, of 1423 N. Monroe Ave., died Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after battling breast cancer.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor George Johnson of Harvestime Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Jane was born April 23, 1940, in Fertile, the daughter of Ernest and Lucille (Prestholt) Fankell. She was a long-time employee of Good Shepherd Health Center where she continued to work until she became ill.

Jane married James D. Schintgen on July 2, 1982, in Nashua. He preceded her in death in 1987. Jane loved spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and animals.

Jane is survived by two daughters, Kim Bezdicek and husband, Vic, of Mason City, and Barb Paulson and friend, Jerry Lee Kopischke, of Lake Crystal, Minn.; three grandchildren, Jacob and Nathan Paulson and Jessica Bezdicek; and one brother, Tom Fankel and wife, Mary, of Chippewa Falls, Wis.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Schintgen; son, Jeffrey James Dankbar; brother, James Fankel; and sister, Mary Lou Scholl.

Mark Seleskie


ALTOONA — Mark Seleskie, 12/17/1959 — 11/26/2007; originally of Hastings, Minn.; passed away at his home in Altoona.

He was preceded in death by parents, Patricia and Charles; and niece Magda.

He is survived by loving wife, Suzanne; sisters, Dawn Seleskie, Lori Maltby and Debbie Anderson; brother, Scott; step-daughter, Rachelle Engelking; and daughters, Anne and Nora.

Mark had been successfully self-employed in various businesses in Minnesota, Missouri and Iowa. At one time, he owned the majority of all Dairy Queen franchises in Iowa.

Mark was always known for his talents to make everyone laugh; he had a kind and generous heart and displayed a willingness to help friend or foe. His heart was as big as the ocean and he brought joy to everyone he encountered. He was dearly loved by all. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 W. 15th St., Hastings, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and one hour prior to services on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.

Mabel Sturgeon

CLARION — Mabel Sturgeon, 88, of Clarion, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2007) at Westview Care Center in Britt,

Mabel Rose Swanson Sturgeon was born Sept. 25, 1919, in Wright County, northwest of Dows, the daughter of George and Edith (Jones) Swanson. She attended Blaine No. 2 country school through the eighth grade and Rowan Consolidated High School, graduating in 1936.

Mabel married Eugene Sturgeon on Jan. 1, 1941. Gene and Mabel started farming that spring 14 miles northeast of Mason City. The following year, they moved back to the Galt area, where they farmed until 1980, when they moved to Dows. After Gene’s passing May 13, 1993, Mabel moved to the Meadows in Clarion.

Mabel was active in the United Methodist Church in Rowan, serving many years as an officer. She also served as an officer on the District Methodist Women Board in Mason City. Mabel was a member of the Rowan Review Club, Jolly Mothers, Vernon Friendly and Liberty clubs of Dows.

Mabel and Gene enjoyed many travels. For 20 years, they traveled to Red Lake, Canada, to fish. Visiting the Holy Land in January 1980 was the highlight of their travels. Taking a cruise on the Sea of Galilee, they both felt was a wonderful experience.

Those left to cherish Mabel’s memory are three daughters: Marilyn (Gary) Hansen of Fletcher, N.C., Gloria (Dennis) Johanson of Britt, Sandra (Larry) Van Gerpen, Emerado, N.D.; one son, Ron (Sandy) Sturgeon of Rowan. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Michelle Callahan, Greg Hansen, Grant Johanson, Gail Lemmon, Janelle Magalong, Eric Sturgeon, Shannon Sturgeon; and 16 great-grandchildren. Surviving Mabel is a brother, Raymond (Betty) Swanson of Clarion; and one sister-in-law, Mary Louise Swanson. of Eagle Grove.

Preceding Mabel in death were her husband of 52 years; her parents; one infant brother; one brother, Clifford Swanson; one daughter Donna Sturgeon (11) in 1953; two grandsons, Chris Sturgeon (3) in 1979, and Brian Van Gerpen (17) 1992.

STORY, Wyo. — Bill E. Archer, 70, of Story, Wyo., died Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at the Fort Mackenzie VA Medical Center in Sheridan, Wyo.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the Story Woman’s Club in Story, Wyo., with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating.

Wilbur L. Olson

FOREST CITY — Wilbur L. Olson, 90, of Forest City, died Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa West Campus in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in rural Forest City with Pastor Robert Snitzer officiating. Burial will be at Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark in Forest City, and an hour prior to service at the church.

Wilbur L. Olson was born in rural Forest City, on Jan. 8, 1917, the son of Lewis and Clara (Larson) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church and received his education in rural school near his home. In 1935, he graduated from Ventura High School.

He was married to Gladys L. Hope in Trenton, Mo., in 1937. Wilbur farmed on the family homestead most of his life and worked part time as an electrician for many years. He and Gladys lived in Benson, Ariz., every winter for 27 years. In 1992, they left their family farm and moved into Forest City. Since August 2006, the couple has resided at Forest Plaza Assisted Living.

Wilbur enjoyed traveling and loved to tell that he had been to all 50 states including a trip he won to Hawaii that he enjoyed with Gladys. Other travels included several trips to Norway as well as Germany and Israel. Another retirement pastime included delivering motor homes for Winnebago Industries, often taking his grandchildren along in the early days, sharing his love of travel.

He also loved to fish and went on many trips “north” with friends. He enjoyed showing off the pictures of the big fish he caught on an Alaskan trip.

Wilbur looked forward to coffee every morning with his friends at Otto Anderson’s as long as he was still able to drive and often “caught” a ride out to Otto’s even after he wasn’t able to get there himself.

A lifelong member of Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, he served the church in various capacities over the years. He also served as Ellington Township Trustee and was on the Hancock County Extension Board.

Wilbur is survived by his wife, Gladys; daughters, Pat (Dennis) Hagen of Forest City and Phyllis Olson of Urbandale; and son, Robert A. Olson of Forest City. His brother, Leslie (Irmalee) Olson of Forest City; and sister, Ionia Oman of Glen Burnie, Md. He is also survived by six grandchildren and their spouses: Pamela (William J.) Madsen of Maplewood, Minn., Deborah (Greg) Geddes of Sioux Falls, S.D., Denise (Brad) Yeager of Forest City, Joleen (Tim) Baumgartner of Pearl City, Ill., Sam (Kylie) Pfile of New Bedford, Mass., and Sara Olson of Forest City. Wilbur adored his five great-grandchildren whom include: Quinten, Christian and Alexandra Geddes and Austin and Elsa Yeager.

LeRoy ‘Dean’ Bertelsen


CHARLES CITY — LeRoy “Dean” Bertelsen, 70, of Charles City, died Wednesday (Nov. 28, 2007) at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dean Bertelsen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethany Alliance Church in Charles City with Pastor Kent Sovine officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

LeRoy Dean Bertelsen was born Feb. 9, 1937, at Des Moines, the son of Gunnar and Florence “Marquerite” (Davis) Bertelsen. He graduated in 1955 from Des Moines Tech High School. Dean entered Iowa State University for a brief time and then entered the Air Force for pilot training. He then joined the Air National Guard working in electronics for 13½ years. Dean completed his military career after 21 years and 3 months.

On May 29, 1960, Dean was united in marriage to Doris Ferch at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City. In 1968 Dean and his family moved from Des Moines to Floyd and then to Charles City in 1975.

Dean held several jobs through his career. He worked as electrical foreman at Hydrotile in Nashua, Mills Inc., Floyd County Memorial Hospital and ended his career at Dome Pipe Line in 1992.

He loved doing yard work, keeping up his home and was handy at fixing most everything. Dean loved pets and also his ’57 T-Bird that was his pride and joy. He enjoyed going to his grandson’s football and basketball games. Michael was his greatest joy and they spent a lot of time together. Dean will be missed very much by his family and friends. He will always be remembered for his love and concern for other people.

Living family member include his wife, Doris Bertelsen of Charles City; three daughters, Lori (Tim) Clark, Teresa Bertelsen and Kathy (Gene) Pettit, all of Charles City; one grandson, Michael Clark; and a step-granddaughter, Ashley Pettit.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step father, John Hayden; and a brother, John Bertelsen.

Hildegarde L. Staff

OSAGE — Hildegarde L. Staff, 94, of Osage, died Monday (Nov. 26, 2007) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Hildegarde was born April 5, 1913, in East Cedar Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Gustav and Alvina (Hartwig) Troge. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cedar Township. Hildegarde graduated from Osage High School in 1931.

She married Rudolph Anderson on June 23, 1940. Rudolph was killed in action during World War II. She married Hans Staff on Nov. 16, 1947, in Osage. They owned and operated the Staff Garage in rural Osage.

Hildegarde was a faithful member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, where she was a member of the Rachel Circle. She was a past president of Osage American Legion Post 278 Auxiliary.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave. in Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship at the church following the memorial service.

According to her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Hildegarde is survived by a son, Jody Staff, of Osage; two sisters, Wilma Johnson of Osage, and Darlene (Carl) Lorence of Osage; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rudolph Anderson; her husband, Hans Staff; and two sisters, Hulda Troge and Verena Waters.

Michael Kumsher

BRITT — Michael Kumsher, 92, of Britt, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2007) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services for Michael Kumsher will be held 10:30 a.m Saturday, Dec. 1, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt with the Rev. Henry P. Huber and the Rev. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Michael, the son of Michael and Stella Cipera Kumsher, was born Oct. 3, 1915, in rural Hancock County southeast of Britt. He attended country school and then helped on his family farm.

Michael was united in marriage with Agnes Ptacek on Nov. 22, 1938, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. The couple farmed the family farm east of Britt until 1997 when they moved into Britt.

He enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling and playing cards.

Michael was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where he was an usher.

Knowing he is at peace with the Lord and mourning his loss are one son, Ronald Kumsher and his wife, Carolyn, of Garner; six daughters: Charlene Aukes and her husband, Denny, of Mason City, Jeraldine Peterson and her husband, Larry, of Corwith, Carolyn DeKruif and her husband, Don, of Britt, Darlene Francis and Tim Lyman of Faribault, Minn., Judy Thompson and her husband, Jerry, of Crystal Lake, and Marilyn Kumsher of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Adeline “Tress” Anderson, of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Agnes in 2005; two sisters, Clara Loy and Anna Kumsher; and one brother Ed.

Stanley D. Hallett

CRYSTAL LAKE — Stanley D. Hallett, 88, of Crystal Lake, died Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Stanley D. Hallett was born on a farm south of Forest City, on June 19, 1919, the son of Allen and Mae (Juhl) Hallett. He was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller and received his education in rural school near his home. As a young boy he lived with his family in Gettysburg, S.D. for a time.

During World War II, Stan worked in an air defense plant in Baltimore, Md., and was later transferred to Omaha, Neb.

On April 15, 1943, he married Frances Haugland in Omaha.

The couple returned from Omaha in 1944 to set up farming in the Miller area and in 1968 continued farming south of Forest City. Stan also worked at Kayot Forester, was a talented welder and did some painting with Jerry Knapper. He was a gifted mechanic, who never met a machine he couldn’t take apart and put back together. For 15 years he and Frances enjoyed wintering in Texas. In 1996 the couple moved off the farm and made their home in Crystal Lake.

Stan was a lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church in Miller. For several years Stan owned an airplane called “The Blue Eagle” with Vernon Nonnweiler. Stan and Frances enjoyed two trips to Norway to visit family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who treasured time spent with his family.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Frances, of Crystal Lake; his children: Carolyn (Clet) Nedved, of Fertile; Harvey Hallett of Crystal Lake, and Wray (Thresea) Hallett, of Forest City. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Greg Nedved, Heather Hallett, Kendra Hallett, Curtis (Jessica) Hallett, Casey Hallett and David (Elizabeth) Hallett; six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Nadine Price, of Clear Lake and Cleone Knudtson, of Lake Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Loretta Etzen; and a brother, Leo Hallett.

Eileen M. Whalen

OSAGE — Eileen M. Whalen, 86, of Northwood and formerly of Osage, died Wednesday (Nov. 28, 2007) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Eileen was born Dec. 14, 1920, near Cresco, the daughter of Leo and Geneva (Cummings) McGee. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1938. On July 9, 1944, Eileen married Floyd Whalen in Burbank, Calif.

After the war, they returned to live in the Austin and Lyle, Minn. areas, and moved to Osage in 1976. Following Floyd’s death, Eileen moved to Lyle.

She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. Eileen was a member of the Sacred Heart Guild in Osage, and of the Queen of Peace Rosary Society in Lyle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Monsignor. Stanley Hayek officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. before services Saturday at the church.

Eileen is survived by five daughters: Lois (Bernie) Freiermuth, of Elmwood, Wis., Kathleen Wencl of Austin, Minn., Darlene (Darcy) Strouf, of Lyle, Minn., Arlene (Michael) Gibson of Gilman, Wis., and Lori (Mike) Wilde of Osage; three sons: Dennis (Linda) Whalen, of Lyle, Minn., Dale (Kathy) Whalen, of Rochester, Minn., and James Whalen of Winona, Minn.; 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Geraldine (Francis) Ott, of Denver, Iowa, Mildred (John) Ellingson, of Rochester, Minn.; two brothers: Lyola McGee, of Gilbertville, and Willis (Emma Jean) McGee, of Raymond.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd, on Dec. 10, 1996; a daughter, Rosanne Eileen Whalen; a great-grandson, Jeffrey Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Hovey; two brothers: Leo McGee Jr., and Ronald McGee; and a son-in-law, Jerry Wencl.
