Wallace A. Kreimeyer

Dougherty — Funeral services for Wallace A. Kreimeyer will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 16, at West Fork United Methodist Church, rural Sheffield, with Pastor Elsa Lawry presiding. Interment will be at West Fork Cemetery, rural Dougherty.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Born in rural Dows on June 29, 1928, Wallace died Nov. 13, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, of complications from heart surgery at the age of 79.

Wally attended country school in the Dows area until March 1945, when the family moved to Hansell. He graduated in 1946 from Hansell Community School.

To get started farming, he worked with his parents during the transition period from horse-drawn equipment to tractor power. During his teenage years he would hire out to neighbors during threshing season, he also did custom bailing. Wally always loved working with red tractors, from the days of the small Farmall tractor to today’s Case IH, that loyalty remained strong all his life.

Wally also had a love of nature and the great outdoors. He served on the Franklin County Conservation Board for 20 years. His primary pastimes were hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved watching plants and animals grow. His watermelon and muskmelon patches and apple orchard kept many neighbors happy with fresh produce every year.

In 1948, Wally seriously began searching for a lifemate who might happen to love the outdoors and farming. He met and started courting Irene Pohlman of Ackley. Wally had found what he was looking for and they married on Dec. 2, 1950. They began their farming operation in rural Ackley with a small herd of dairy cows on Irene’s parents’ farmland. In 1959 Wally and Irene moved their family and farming operation to rural Dougherty where they have lived ever since.

Wally served in the National Guard from 1951 to 1953 where he was awarded honors as an expert marksman.

Wally had a special place in his heart for his children and grandchildren. Wally lived his life with passion; passion for his chosen lifestyle in career, farming; passion for taking care of nature, with full realization that nature needs balance; passion for fighting on confinements, contending that such confinement was unnatural to the hog. “Not good animal husbandry,” as he would say.

Wally was fiercely independent to the end.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mattie (Oelmann) Kreimeyer; a brother, Harold Kreimeyer; brother-in-law, Claire Erickson; and sister-in-law, Lois Kreimeyer.
