Leonard J. Kolbet

 

ROCKFORD — Leonard J. Kolbet, 92, formerly of 2133 210th St., Rockford, died Monday afternoon (Oct. 29, 2007) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital with family at his side.

 

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 3, 2007) at Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Ave. N.W. in Rockford, with the Rev. James W. Dubert presiding. Cremation will take place following the mass with Cremation Services of North Iowa, in care of Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City.

 

Private family inurnment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Roseville at a later date.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with a 6:30 p.m. vigil service conducted by Sister Jennifer Rausch. The visitation will continue Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Leonard J. Kolbet was born March 28, 1915, to John and Karrie (Glaser) Kolbet in Alta Vista. He grew up in Alta Vista and attended parochial school in the Alta Vista school system. Leonard lived most of his life in the Floyd County area.

 

On Feb. 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Pauline M. Staudt at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville. The couple purchased their farm seven miles east of Rockford in 1949 and have remained living at that same location since. Leonard and Pauline had the wonderful opportunity of spending 62 years of marriage together. Leonard was a dedicated husband and caring father. His family and church activities were especially important to him.

 

Leonard farmed most all of his life, raising livestock and small grain. Some of Leonard’s favorite leisure activities and interests included raising horses, family gatherings, baseball, playing cards (especially euchre) and dining at the Pizza Ranch enjoying chicken legs and mashed potatoes. He and Pauline treasured their time together attending area establishments where they could dance to big band music. Leonard was very kind, yet strong-willed man with a charming sense of humor.

 

Leonard will be missed dearly by family and friends who shared in his life.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Jean Ann Briggs of Omaha, Neb.; his son, Jerry Kolbet (Marjo Grimm) of Rockford; three grandchildren, Jennifer Cross, Tarisha Davis and Maurice Briggs; seven great-grandchildren, Allie, Cole, Carley, Emma, P.J., Kya and Mariah; his siblings, Luvern Kolbet of Belmond, Leo Kolbet of Elma, Lois McAvoy of Elma and Lola Boss of Charles City; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

 

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline M. Kolbet on July 17, 2003; son-in-law, Dwight Briggs; one sister, Luella Phippen; two brothers, Louis and Linus Kolbet and his cousin, Ed Glaser.

Robert W. ‘Bob’ Bagley


 

DES MOINES — Robert “Bob” Bagley passed away on Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2007) at the Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines.

 

Bob was born in Mason City on June 28, 1912, to Willis G.C. Bagley and Winifred (Bogardus) Bagley. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1930 and Mason City Junior College in 1934. Bob received a bachelor of arts degree in music education from Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y., and a masters degree in music from Drake University.

 

On Sept. 5, 1936, Bob was married to Naomi Boyd Bagley from Mason City. They had one daughter, Barbara.

 

Bob started his career as a band director in Rochester New York. He returned to Iowa, teaching at Waverly High School (1939-1940), thereafter moving to Des Moines where he was the band director at Callanan Junior High and Roosevelt High School from 1940 to 1973. He ended his teaching career at McCombs Junior High School (1973-1977). Bob interrupted his career at Roosevelt to serve in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. He was also an instructor at Drake University, was a member of the Des Moines Municipal Band (1947-1976), and served as its director from 1953 to 1976.

 

Bob’s lifelong love of music began at the age of five, and continued to grow over the next 90 years. His heart was not only in performing on his trumpet, but in teaching young students to enjoy, appreciate and perform music. After retiring in 1977, Bob continued to find daily pleasure by playing his key board and trumpet, exemplifying his philosophy of “music for fun.”

 

Bob was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Des Moines, The Iowa Bandmasters Association (Past President), the Iowa Music Educators Association, and the American Legion, Argonne Post.

 

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi; and his parents.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Glenn) Johnson of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Bryan, Benjamin, Kristin and Katherine. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

 

A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday.

 

Graveside services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.

 


 

Marjorie Quam

 

RAKE — Marjorie Quam, 86, of Rake, died Friday (Oct. 26, 2007) at St Luke’s West in Florence, Ky.

 

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake with Pastor Larry Rehlander officiating. Burial will be at West Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center and one hour before the service at the church.

 

Marjorie H. Quam was born March 16, 1921, in Dougherty, to Maynard and Hazel (Lund) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

 

She graduated from Rake High School in 1938 and then attended Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City. Following graduation, Marge was employed at the Dolmage Hospital in Buffalo Center, and in later years at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, and St Luke’s Lutheran Home in Blue Earth, Minn.

 

Marge was married to Gerald Quam on July 31, 1943, at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake. They continued to live in Rake after their marriage, where they raised their three children, Mark, Marcia and Louise. Gerald passed away on March 1, 1988, and Marge lived in Rake until her death on Oct. 26, 2007.

 

Marge was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, having served in various offices of the Ladies Aid and Circle. She was also an active member of the Rake Auxiliary.

 

Marge loved to travel, having gone on many bus tours and visiting relatives throughout the United States. She especially enjoyed having coffee with her many friends at the Norkse Hus restaurant. The highlight of Marge’s life was her family. Most recently, the birth of four new great-grandchildren in addition to a 3 and 7-year-old great-grandson.

 

Marjorie is survived by her children, Mark Quam of Clear Lake, Marcia Folven and husband, Jon, of Oshkosh, Wis., and Louise Hagedorn and husband, John, of Rake; grandchildren, Angella (Michael) Dennis, Derek (Niki) Folven, Jeff Folven, Staci (Corey) Matson, Jodi (Ryan) Schmitz and Erik (Neely) Hagedorn; great-grandchildren, Ian and Garrett Dennis, Caden and Coen Matson and Avery Schmitz; sisters-in-law, Bette Hanson, Cathleen Quam, Wanda Rygh, Opal (Wayne) Teig and Virginia (Carroll) Reimers.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents, her brother, Roger; and two brothers-in-law, Lyle Quam and Lloyd Rygh.

 

She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Larry O. Thayer

 

NORTHWOOD — Larry O. Thayer, 75, of Northwood, died Monday (Oct. 29, 2007) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

 

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood, with the Rev. Wendi Gillan officiating. Burial will take place at the South Shell Rock Cemetery in Northwood.

Larry O. Thayer was born on July 19, 1932, in Belmond, to Oscar and Delila (Thomas) Thayer. Larry lived on the family farm his whole life.

SHEFFIELD — Dorothy Ubben, 91, of Sheffield, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2007) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Douglas Edwin Shoger

 

RICEVILLE — Douglas Edwin Shoger, 48, of Riceville, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2007) following a short but hard-fought battle with cancer.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be at Osage Cemetery in Osage.

 

Friends may join the family from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

 

Doug, son of Stanley and Norma (Eastman) Shoger, was born on Nov. 10, 1958, in Albert Lea, Minn. Doug graduated from Riceville High School in 1977. Following high school, Doug took over the family dairy and hog farm after his father passed away in 1984. The dairy barn burnt down in 1987 and from then until present he was running a crop farm. During this time, he was also employed by Rochester Cartage Inc. where he drove semi. Doug purchased his first semi in the early 1990s. In 2006, Doug switched from trucking to raising hogs once again. He built his own hog facility and also managed a few other barns for Reicksview Farms up until the time of his illness.

 

On July 23, 1999, Doug was united in marriage to Theresa (Williams) Shoger in Cresco. To this union three beautiful children were born: Alex, Madison and Peyton. Doug’s three children and his wife were the highlight of his life. He was a very dedicated father and husband.

 

Doug was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching a race when he could find time. He loved sharing his interest of farming and tractors with his son, Alex, and the harvest season was his favorite time of the year. Doug’s favorite pastime was spending time with his family and friends. He was always there to lend a helping hand. He was a quiet man with a huge heart and the things he did for everyone else will always be remembered. His presence will be greatly missed but his memory never forgotten.

 

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Theresa of Riceville; his son Alex; two daughters, Madison and Peyton; mother, Norma Shoger, Riceville; grandmother, Mildred Eastman, Riceville; brother, Steven (Carolyn) Shoger, Nora Springs; and children, Bethany and Samantha; sister, Roxanne (Robert) Dvorak, Spring Valley, Minn., and children, Mitchell (Melinda), Jordan and Marshall (Katie); sister, Suzanne (Rick) Graves, Huxley, and children, Taylor, Jenna and Kameron; brother, Nathan (Tammi) Shoger, of Laurel Hill, N.C., and children Nick (Kristin), Amber and Heather; his parents-in-law, Robert (Ann) Williams, Osage; brother-in-law, Matt (Valerie) Williams of Osage, and children Emma, Zachary and Nolan; brother-in-law, Brian (special friend Kristy), Des Moines; sister-in-law, Joan (Steve) Jacobs of Osage; and children, Trey, Cory, Allison and Rachael; sister-in-law, Amy (Rob) Ring, Osage, and children Isaac, Caleb and Brianna, as well as many great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.

Jean Winnor Staff

 

GRAFTON — Jean Winnor Staff, 91, of Grafton, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2007) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will take place at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

 

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood.

 

Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services Friday at the church.

 

Jean Winnor Staff was born March 26, 1916, in rural Cedar Township, Mitchell County, to John and Clara Winnor Staff.

 

He was confirmed at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa. Jean graduated from Osage High School in Osage in 1935.

 

Jean married Mildred Gordon on Dec. 16, 1945, at the St. Ansgar parsonage. The couple farmed in Osage on the family farm then moved to a farm near Carpenter in 1949.

 

Jean and Mildred moved to their farm near Grafton in 1950. Jean retired from farming and later moved to Grafton in 1980.

 

Jean is preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings, Hans, Lloyd, Mena and Olaf.

 

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; sons, Keith (Charlene) Staff, Glen (Judy) Staff and daughter, Lois Staff; two grandsons, Jeremy and Brian; four great-granddaughters, Destiny, Azlyn, Kaitlyn and Julia; and sister-in-law, Hildegard Staff.

 

The family of Jean W. Staff had requested that memorials be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

James Darrell Frampton


 

CLEAR LAKE — James Darrell Frampton, 83, 1200 10th Ave N., Clear Lake, died Monday (Oct. 29, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

 

Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Inurnment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Clear Lake VFW Post No. 4868.

 

Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

 

Memorials may be given to the James D. Frampton Memorial Fund.

 

Jim was born June 22, 1924, in Boone, the son of Willard and Goldie (Harden) Frampton. He attended school in Jordon Township. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged.

 

Jim married Elsie Grace Walsh on Aug. 8, 1946, in Boone. Jim and Elsie operated a bowling alley and night club in Roseberg, Ore. They moved to Clear Lake in 1964. Jim started working for the Clear Lake police force in 1970 in law enforcement. He became the Clear Lake police chief in 1976, retiring in 1987.

 

Jim enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid bowler, and was in the Clear Lake Hall of Fame. He loved playing pool with the boys at the VFW, gambling, and Iowa Hawkeye athletics. He also loved fishing and watching his grandkids play sports.

 

Jim is survived by three children, Kerry James Frampton and his wife, Dee, Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., Kenneth John Frampton and his wife, Deborah, of Clear Lake, and Kathy Jean Astor and her husband, Bill, of Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Jamie, Kelly, Kerry Jay, Brandon and his wife, Jenny, David and Ethan; stepgrandchild, Jamie Jo; great-grandson, Dilyn Kaj; brothers, DeWayne Frampton and his wife, Marilyn, of Boone, and George Frampton of Michigan; sister, Goldie, of Michigan; nephews, Tim Frampton and Kevin Frampton; and cousin, Dean Kemmerer, of Clear Lake.

 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Elsie (Oct, 9, 2004).

Charles S. Albertson

LELAND — Charles S. Albertson, 79, of Leland, died Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2007) near his home in rural Leland.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake. Burial will be at Ellington Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark in Forest City and an hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Charles Stanley Albertson was born on April 20, 1928 in Forest City, to Simon and Gladys (Rygmyr) Albertson, the second of three children. He was born again in May of 1950 when he received Jesus as his personal Savior. He attended country school near his home and later Leland Community School.

After high school he worked briefly at Wilson Packing Plant in Albert Lea, Minn., and helped his father farm.

On Nov. 25, 1948, he married Julaine Carola Torkelson at Forest City. To this union three children were born.

In 1948, he started farming his parents homestead and later farmed various properties in the north Iowa area. In 1970, they moved back to the homestead and continued farming until his death.

While farming he also took up other interests — electrician, plumbing, heating, woodworking, and golf, but still farming was his favorite. He also worked for a short time at Winnebago Industries from 1972-73.

He served on the Thompson/Leland Coop Elevator board for several years and has served the past few years on the Hauge Lutheran Federation board.

He is survived by his wife, Juliane and three children: Barb (Roger) Jacobson, of Estherville; Dave (Sheryl) Albertson, of Leland, and Joel (Tanda) Albertson, of Forest City; nine grandchildren: Angela (Will) Pazurek, of Austin, Minn.; Kara (Paul) Quam of Springfield, Mo.; Amber (Ben) Dahl of Moorhead, Minn.; Laurann (James) Anderson, of Leland, Betsie (Dan) Feldkamp of St. Louis Park, Minn.; Tisha (Scott) Thompson, of Forest City; Ethan (Michelle) Albertson of Florence, Ariz.; Luke (Monica) Albertson of St. Paul, Minn.; Erika (Aaron) Willey, of Cherokee, and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Darlene (Ken) Pinke, of Dexter, Minn.; and brother, Rodney (Sue) Albertson, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and numerous other nieces and nephews. Also survived by sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Thelma Sunde, Louise Jermeland, Orrin (Marion) Torkelson, Bonnie Torkelson, and Darlene (Marvin) Hanna.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two great-grandchildren, Louisa Feldkamp and Marta Anderson.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4:7)

Charlie started the race on May 1950 and he finished well.

GARNER — Karna H. Brinkman, 76, of Garner died Thursday (Nov. 1, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. David Graham and the Rev. Tim Diehl officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner with a VFW Auxiliary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Karna Helen Brinkman, the daughter of Herman and Effie (Olson) Tulp, was born Jan. 3, 1931 at Leal, N.D.

At an early age she moved with her family to Rowan. Karna graduated from Rowan High School in 1948 and continued her education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching certificate. She later took summer classes at various colleges to earn her teaching degree in 1974.

Karna taught at Klemme for four years where she met her future husband, Garland. On June 18, 1950 they were married at her parents farm near Rowan. They made their home in Klemme.

Karna then took some time off from teaching to raise her family. In 1961 they moved to Garner and Karna resumed her teaching career as an elementary teacher in the Garner-Hayfield school district until her retirement in 1992.

She enjoyed playing board games with her grandchildren, reading, golfing, watching sports and soap operas on TV, talking on the phone, wintering in McAllen, Texas, and traveling to see her family.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Women’s Fellowship and taught Sunday school and Bible school. Karna also was a member of the Garner VFW Auxiliary, Homemakers Club and was a past Girl Scout leader.

Karna is survived by her husband, Garland, of Garner; two daughters: Valerie Brinkman-Kaplan and husband, Dr. Gordon Kaplan, of Fort Worth, Texas and Laurel Garvin of Mankato, Minn.; six grandchildren: Ryan Niemi, Erin Niemi and husband, Dan White, and their son, Braydon, Brendan Niemi and his son, Dylan, Miranda Kaplan, Weston Garvin and Taylor Garvin; and a brother, Howard Tulp and wife, Esther, of Goodell; nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Brian Garvin in 1998; and her sister, Carole Barrick and husband, Harry.

Dorothy A. Ubben

SHEFFIELD — Dorothy A. Ubben, 91, of Sheffield, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2007) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at the First Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield, with Pastor Ken Livingston presiding. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield.

Dorothy A. Ubben was born Nov. 12, 1915 on a farm near Marble Rock to Ray P. and Della (Ries) Moore. She moved to Kasson, Minn. with her parents when she was six weeks old. Later they moved to Rochester, Minn.

She went to school in Kasson and rural Rochester. Dorothy’s mother died in 1926 and the family moved east of Sheffield, where years later she met and married her husband, Emil Ubben.

They farmed and then in 1941 they moved northeast of Sheffield until 1980 when they retired and moved into Sheffield. Emil passed away in 1994; Dorothy lived in her home until 2000 when she went to live at the Sheffield Care Center.

Dorothy accepted Christ as her Savior in 1937 and was baptized in 1938 at Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield.

Dorothy had to quit high school in Sheffield to help out at home after her mother’s death. She always wanted to get a high school diploma so she went to G.E.D. classes and received her high school diploma in 1981.

Dorothy was a gifted lady and she had several hobbies. She made many birthday and wedding cakes for her family. She also liked to make quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also made quilts for children in India.

Dorothy also did china painting and made many beautiful gifts for family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter: Darlene (Richard) Mason, of Chapin; sons: Donald (Mary) Ubben, of Waterloo; Dr. Kenneth (Norma) Ubben, of Bella Vista, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Joan Moore, Hansell; and nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, brothers: Donald and Lowell and half sister and half brother, Ramona and Ray.

Grace enjoyed tatting and playing the piano.

She is survived by her sister, Leona Phillips, of Denison; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Alvin Martin

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Alvin Martin, 78, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Oct. 27, 2007) after a lengthy illness.

Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Sunday Nov. 4, 2007, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Inurnment will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with Pastor Tom Healy officiating.

He was born in Mason City, on Nov. 2, 1928. Alvin graduated from Mason City High School. He was united in marriage to Mardell Klein; to this union three children were born.

They moved to Louisville in 1962, he worked at Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange, Ky., until his retirement. He enjoyed working on his tractor, fishing, boating and spending time at his lake home in Alabama.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mardell Klein Martin; sons: Thomas E. Martin (Marsha), of Louisville, and Dr. John D. Martin (Brenda), of Leesburg, Va.; grandchildren: Stacie Martin Gibson (Shane), of Louisville, Kelly Martin of Louisville, Chelsea Martin and David Martin of Leesburg, Va.; brothers: William, of Terre Haute, Ind., Clayton, of Charles City, Eli, of Ashland, Ky., and Harlan Martin, of Donnellson; sisters-in-law: Mary (Richard) Mott, of Clear Lake, Joan (Russ) Oehlert, of Sheffield, and Helen Klein, of Mason City, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and infant daughter, Rita Martin.

He will best be remembered for his love of family (especially the times together at Lake Martin), his tenacious can-do spirit and his extraordinary courage.

Phyllis enjoyed embroidery, crafts, and taking care of her family. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Mason City.

ROLFE — Jackie W. Hughes, 70, of Clear Lake, formerly of Rolfe, died Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Jackie William Hughes was born on May 8, 1937, near Rolfe. He was the son of Harris and Erma (Colee) Hughes.

Jackie was educated at Rolfe and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1958. He worked at Beckard’s Chicken Hatchery and later for his brother at Jerry’s Super Valu.

Jackie moved to Clear Lake in 1974 and made his home at various locations within the Opportunity Village.

Jackie was a member of the Methodist Church in Rolfe and Clear Lake. He currently attended the Open Bible Church. He belonged to the Clear Lake Lions Club and the Village Arrowhead Club. He liked to bowl and go to Camp Courageous.

He especially loved spending time with his many friends at Opportunity Village.

Survivors include his sisters: Susann Stockwell of Laurens, and Linda Kemery of Lenox; sister-in-law: Judy Hughes of Eden Prairie, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

Jackie was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley Herscher; and brothers: Kenneth, Jerry and Gene.

Mary Lou Schomers

ROCKWELL — Mary Lou Schomers, 78, of Rockwell, formerly of Lindale, Texas, passed away Nov. 1, 2007, of complications from Parkinson’s disease at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Mary Lou was born in Mason City on Feb. 3, 1929, to Hazel (Winnacott) and Lee D. Miller. She attended Mason City Schools.

She married Leslie D Whipple July 14, 1946 in Mason City. They later moved to Belmond. Four children were born to this union.

She married Gerald F Schomers Jan. 19, 1974 in Des Moines. They later moved to Texas. She returned to Iowa in 2003 after the death of her husband.

Mary Lou is survived by her children, Bonita (Dean) Weber, Fred (Deb) Whipple, Marsha (Wayne) Westbrook, Jeanne Millang (Bruce Baxter), Beth (Bill) Speights, Michael (Gail) Schomers, Tom Schomers and Susan (Jim) Swanson; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, David L and Richard; sister, Betty.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gerry; her sister, Dorothy; her brother, George; and her granddaughter, Mindy.

Graveside services will be held 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa.

Lawrence William ‘Bud’ Borchardt Jr.

Lawrence William “Bud” Borchardt Jr., passed away at his home on Lake Jefferson near Cleveland, Minn., Sept. 20, 2007, at the age of 74 after battling with cancer.

Bud was born at home on July 12, 1933 south of Carpenter. A graduate of Carpenter High School in 1951, he entered the United States Army in 1953 serving with the 93rd Engineers Float Bridge Company and left as a corporal in 1955. His time in the service was spent between Camp Polk, La. and his final assignment in Germany.

Married to Doris A. Grosland Dec. 20, 1953, they spent their lives together in Mason City and Forest City and since 1988 in retirement at their lake home near Cleveland, Minn.

Upon discharge from the Army, Bud spent his life in the field of construction. He worked at Home Lumber Company and Gjellafald Construction until he started his own business, Borchardt and Son Construction, from 1968 to 1988 all in Forest City.

Everyone knew Bud as an avid outdoorsman. His entire life, Bud enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, trapping and snowmobiling with his family and friends. He also built furniture for his home and his grandchildren.

Bud and Doris enjoyed attending and participating in the busy lives of their boys’ school activities sharing special times with family and friends at these events. As proud grandparents, they continued to participate in the lives and activities of their grandchildren, and made many friends in Chicago, Denver and Des Moines.

Doris, Bud’s wife of 53 years, and their three sons, Craig (Minneapolis), Paul (Chicago) and Brian (Des Moines) survive him. Beloved father-in-law to Sheri, Mary and Julia. Dear grandfather to Molly, Ryan, Tyler, Maxwell, Ida, Tiffany and Christopher. Proud great-grandfather of Keagan; brother of Gaylis Tenold.

Preceded in death by his mother and father, Lawrence and Rosel; and his only daughter, Susan.

A service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 305 Sixth St., Cleveland, Minn. There will be a luncheon following the service.

Bud touched the lives of many people over the years through his work, hobbies, children and grandchildren, and the outpouring of prayers, sympathy, support and kind thoughts and deeds that you all have shown us has been a blessing to the family.

Johanna Louise Erickson, the daughter of Gerhard and Caroline Beerman Lucken, was born April 20, 1914, near LeMars. She graduated from Liberty Central, where she enjoyed playing basketball. She then attended National Business College in Sioux City and later worked for an insurance agency for four years.

Jo married Theodore “Ted” Gustave Erickson on Feb. 22, 1939, at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Akron. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Westreville, S.D., where they ran a general store. In 1946, they moved back to Sioux City where they owned and operated a grocery store. During this period of time, they welcomed three children, son, Gus, daughter, Caroline, and son, David.

In 1949, Johanna and family moved to Viborg, S.D., where Ted was a territory manager for Cargill. The family made one final move to Spencer in 1958.

Jo was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, TTT, Clay County Republicans, ladies auxiliary and the hospital auxiliary. She worked for a local physicians group and the library. She volunteered for many organizations, including hospice, AARP and Senior Center.

Johanna especially loved her family and friends and spending time with them. She will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring person who always remembered special occasions with a card, a call or a way to let those close to her know she was thinking of them.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted, in 1985; six brothers and six sisters.

Jarrod Jon Opkis was born March 20, 1969, in Buffalo Center, the son of Alvin and Phyllis (Dye) Opkis. He graduated high school from Rudd Rockford Marble Rock and attended Iowa Central Community College, Fort Dodge.

In 1989, Jarrod began work for Curries and where he was currently employed. Jarrod was united in marriage to Carolyn Brass on Sept. 19, 1998, in Rockford; to this union two sons were born.

Jarrod loved hunting, fishing, camping and helping friends; his greatest love was spending time with his family and friends. Jarrod was known as being a practical joker! He touched a lot of lives and will be greatly missed by all. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Nora Springs.

John William  Tyler Jr.

John William Tyler Jr., 56, passed away on Friday (Oct. 26, 2007) near his home in Dallas, Texas, to continue making music with his Savior on a much bigger stage. Born Nov. 7, 1950, in Mason City to John W. “Jack” Tyler Sr. and Mary Lu (Hood) Tyler.

John is survived by his wife, Paula J. Tyler of Lewisville, Texas; son, Adam W. Tyler of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sister, Nancy Grady of Birmingham, Ala.; brothers, Bill Lewandowski of Renton, Wash., Martin Maloney of Birmingham, Ala., Bill Tyler, Tim Tyler and Rod Tyler of Clear Lake; family, Don Hitzhusen of Rockford, Connie Hitzhusen of Anamosa, Mark, Joyce, Erin and Colin Alcorn of Coppell, Texas, and friends and musicians all over.

John was a well known musician and song writer in North Iowa and Dallas playing with local and internationally known artists. John was best known for his bass and acoustic guitar as well as his rich singing voice and beautiful spirit. John also did production and engineering for many artists and bands throughout his career. John will always be remembered for his amazing sense of humor and loving soul.

John grew up in the Tyler-Ryan furniture and flooring business founded by his grandfather William P. Tyler in 1930. He continued working in the industry until his death.

A candlelight memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at First United Methodist Church, 420 S. Heartz Road, Coppell, TX 75019, in the Rotunda Chapel (south entrance) to celebrate his life and music. John’s remains will be taken to Clear Lake, where a private service will be held at a later date. Local musicians played tributes to John on many stages throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area following his death.

Myrna Hunsley

BRITT — Myrna Hunsley, 87, of Britt, passed away peacefully on Friday (November 2, 2007) after a difficult year of declining health. She left us as she did in life, with dignity and class. Myrna will be remembered for her many friends and her love and generosity. Her family will miss her deeply.

Memorial services for Myrna Hunsley will be held on Monday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt with Pastor Larry Day officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at East Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Algona.

Myrna May (Simpson) Hunsley was born on May 19, 1920, to Ina (Yeakel) and Fred Zeigler. Her family included three sisters and one brother, Alice, Mabel Willard and Merriam (Aunt Bun). She received her education in the Algona schools with graduation in 1939.

She married Robert H. Simpson on Sept. 20, 1942, and moved to Britt after Bob’s discharge from the Army. The family included Creg “Rick” and Rob. D.

Bob was killed in an auto accident on Dec. 2, 1960.

She married Elwin E. Hunsley on Aug. 10, 1964. Elwin passed away on Sept. 25, 1973.

Myrna was employed at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital as a medical transcriptionist for 25 years, retiring in 1988. At that time she moved to Boise, Idaho, then returning to Britt in July of 2002.

She recently resided in Britt at both the Summit House and Westview Care Center.

Her surviving family includes her sons: Creg “Rick” Simpson of Iowa City, Rob D. Simpson (Amy) of Mason City; four grandchildren: Kelly Murphy (Mike) and Marcy Simpson both of Iowa City, Amber Brumm (Reed) of Rockford, Sean Simpson (Mary) of Mankato, Minn.; sister, Merriam Dobarganes “Bun” of Houston, Texas and special niece, Loretta Kirkbride (Ken) of Boise, Idaho. In addition she has five great-grandchildren; Parker Brumm, Emma Andrus, Mackenzie Murphy, Henry Simpson and Charles Simpson.

Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, crosswords, reading, cross-stitching, Hawkeye sports, watching QVC, her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, two sisters, one brother, both husbands, and one step-son.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hancock County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Phyllis was born on May 15, 1927, in Britt, the

daughter of John and Emma (Hauptly) Steenlage. She attended and graduated from Britt High School in 1945, and also attended teachers college and received her teaching certificate. She taught in a one-room school house in Kanawaha, before her marriage. She was

married to William A. Peck on June 10, 1946, in Great Falls, Mont. Her husband worked for the railroad and they lived numerous places before

making Mason City their permanent home in 1959. Phyllis had many childhood farm memories. Her teaching career and the education of her four children were the highlights of Phyllis’ life. Her home life, husband and family were very important to her. She enjoyed dancing and country music.

Phyllis is survived by her children: Sandra L. Ellis-Kinney and Doug of Standsbury Park, Utah, William D. Peck of Brookings Harbor, Ore., Patricia A. “Pat” Davison and husband, Scott of Mason City, Jolene P. McClung and

husband, Kurt of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; grandchildren: Jason Ellis, Jennifer Ellis, Laura (Ellis) Smith, Matthew Ellis, Hilary Davison, Mason McClung, Dillon McClung, and Yulia McClung; five great-grandchildren;

sister, Viola Hawk of Britt; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her special friend, George Wendell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William in 1990; brother, John Jr. and sister, Imogene Zrostlik.

David M. Farnham

DUMONT — David M. Farnham, 58, of Dumont, passed away Monday (October 29, 2007) at the Dumont Wellness Center.

Private graveside memorial services will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.

David was born on Jan. 29, 1949, to Wally and Lovejoy Spry Farnham in Holdrege, Neb.

David spent his life being cared for by many loving friends. His final years were spent at NCHS in Belmond and the Dumont Wellness Center in Dumont.

David is survived by many loving caregivers and friends.

Cody Mobley

OSAGE — Cody Lee Mobley, 14, of Osage, died Friday (November 2, 2007) of injuries he received in a car accident near Osage.

Cody was born on March 20, 1993, the son of Kent and Judy (Hemann) Mobley. He was a ninth grader at the Osage High School. He

participated in band, football, wrestling, track and baseball. Cody was making a shelf for his parents in shop class. This year Cody played football and was on both the ninth and 10th grade teams. Cody, in one game, made 12 tackles. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and went to church every Sunday and attended CCD. Cody was always busy. He never sat in the house unless it was too cold or raining. He had two gardens and mowed several lawns. He was kind-hearted and enjoyed doing odd jobs for his grandmother. Cody liked to hunt and fish. He enjoyed fishing trips to Brainard with his family and will be missed by his hunting buddies Kent, Ben, Chris, Jonathan and Bruce.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Monsignor. Stanley Hayek officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 until 8 p.m., Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a Scripture Wake Service at 8 p.m.

MASON CITY — James “Jim” A. Smith, 84, of Mason City, died Friday (November 2, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Jim was born on Sept. 9, 1923, in Randall, the son of Arthur and Cora (Fisher) Smith. He attended school in Forest City. He married Verna Mae Thornbury on Dec. 3, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and later married Lynnea Bosch on July 23, 1999.

 Jim loved to go fishing, boating, golfing and camping. He also enjoyed traveling, especially his winters in Texas. Drinking coffee and visiting with friends was a part of his daily schedule. Jim was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. 

Jim is survived by his wife, Lynnea; two daughters: Judy (Eric) Barsness of Eau Claire, Wis., and Jane (John) Harrod, Jr., of Middleton, Wis.; four grandchildren: Susy (John) Stoffer, J. Scott (Susan) Harrod, Matthew (Annette) Barsness, and James (Casey); six great- grandchildren; one cousin; and several sister and brother-in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Verna Mae in 1993; one brother, Warren Smith; one sister, Buenetta Kroeze and stepfather, Russell Pitkin.

Elmer E. Wendt

 

HUMBOLDT — Elmer E. Wendt, 90, of Humboldt, formerly of Bode, died Saturday (November 3, 2007) at the Humboldt Care Center South.

 

 Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Livermore with the Rev. Henry Friedrich officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, rural Livermore, with military rites conducted by the Bode American Legion.

 

 Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilson-Lentz Funeral Home in Livermore.

 

Elmer E. Wendt was born on Aug. 18, 1917, near LuVerne in Kossuth County, the son of Albert and Laura (Lenz) Wendt. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in LuVerne. In 1931 he moved to a farm near Bode with his parents. He graduated from Bode High School in 1935. He continued to farm until he was inducted into the Armed Services in September of 1942. He served with the 133rd Infantry, 34th Division in Italy from October 1944 until the end of the Italian Campaign in May of 1945. He was discharged in December of 1945.

 

Elmer was united in marriage to Marjorie Hewitt of Livermore on June 1, 1949. They farmed near Bode until their retirement in 1978, when they moved to Bode. They moved to the Humboldt Care Center South in May 2006.

 

Elmer was a charter member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Livermore, where he helped celebrate the 75th anniversary of the church in September of this year. He served on various church boards. He was a member of the Bode American Legion for more than fifty years.

 

He loved to spend his free time fishing.

 

Mr. Wendt is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Marjorie of Humboldt; three children, Lorrie Graaf and her husband, David of Johnston, Steven Wendt and his wife, Mary of Mason City, and Kathy Parham and her husband, Robert of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three grandchildren, Rachel Graaf of Tunis, Tunisia, Adam Graaf of Des Moines, and Alyssa Wendt of Cedar Falls; a nephew, Edward Wendt, of Martinsdale, Ind.; and a brother-in-law, Richard Rossing, of Sun City West, Ariz.

 

 He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy Jenson and Irene Rossing; and one brother, Lloyd Wendt.
