Thomas S. ‘Tom’ Rich

CHARLES CITY — Thomas S. “Tom” Rich, 87, of 301 Seventh Ave. in Charles City, died on Sunday evening (Nov. 4, 2007) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St., in Charles City, with the Rev. Gary Van Wert officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Military respects will be provided by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Thomas Samuel Rich was born on Dec. 13, 1919, in Cobden, Ill., the son of Rose Day (Kendall) and John Lyman Rich. In the spring of 1937, Tom graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. He chose to further his education, attending college in Carbondale, Ill. It was while at college, that he met the love of his life and future bride, Mary “Elaine” Schmitt.

In 1940, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent time on the battleship USS Wyoming. In January of 1942, Tom was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II, until Jan. 11, 1946. After honorably and faithfully completing his military duties, Tom was discharged from Jefferson Barracks, Mo.

Tom and Elaine were united in marriage in Cape Girardeau, Mo,. on Oct. 5, 1942.

Following Tom’s discharge from the service, he completed his college education, graduating with a B.S. degree in the spring of 1949 from Southern Illinois University.

Tom accepted a job offer in Mason City at the Farm Bureau and later was employed at General Mills and Armour and Company. In 1967, Tom and Elaine moved to Charles City. He began work as an independent sales agent for Rushmore Mutual Insurance and also at the A & B Elevator. Tom sold insurance until his retirement.

Tom was a devoted member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, a life member of the Kiwanis, which he served as a past president, the Senior Citizen Center and a member of the Mason Lodge, all in Charles City.

Some of Tom’s other interests and hobbies included golfing at the Wildwood, playing cards and board games, vegetable gardening, singing, cheering for the Charles City softball teams, tending to his home and yard and raising beagles; he was especially fond of his dog, Mac.

Tom was often seen in attendance at the local municipal band concerts or at the high school concerts in Algona, where his son, Dave is the band director. Tom treasured time spent with his family and friends and found great interest in the local agriculture happenings and issues.

Tom will be dearly cherished by his children, John Rich, of Chicago, Ill., Jane Biggers, of Charles City, David (Vicky) Rich, of Algona and Susan Rich (Mark Johnson) of Hastings, Minn.; his close friend, Ila Elliott, of Charles City; and his seven grandchildren, Alison Crouch, Nathan Rich, Jennifer (Matthew) Hill, Courtney (Joel) Vinson, Laura (Jim) Hoover, Kelly (Andy) Evans and Eric Rich. He is also survived by his 15 great-grandchildren, Chase, Austin, Taylor and Ella Bliss Crouch, Mary Jane, Ryan and Ashley Halder, Alexis, Makenzie and Caroline Hill, Elaine Vinson, Collin and Drew Hoover and Adyson and Brogan Evans and numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Preceding Tom in death is his wife of 53 years, Elaine Rich in February of 1996; and his four sisters and four brothers.

Carsie E. Bakken

MANLY — Carsie E. Bakken, 64, of Manly, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2007) at her home after a brief bout with cancer.

A celebration of Carsie’s life and public viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City. Burial will be in Haw Branch Church Cemetery, Chocowinity, N.C.

Carsie E. Bakken was born on March 20, 1943 at Washington, N.C., a daughter of Donald and Stella (Nelson) Dale.

Carsie owned The Bookery at 12 S. Federa Ave., Mason City. She devoted her life to her family and her passion of books.

She will be missed by many and loved by all. God bless her always.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Bakken; five children, Donald Twitty, Carisa Riles, Christine Twitty, Dwayne (Paula) Twitty, and Darrell Twitty; step-daughter, Dee Ann (Michael) Ivonilli; four grandchildren, Haden Riles, Austin Twitty, Christopher Ivonilli, and Corey Ivonilli; brother, Clinton Dale and family.

Her parents, brother, Creston Dale and sisters in-law, Carol Dale and Iris Dale, preceded her in death.

Agnes A. Rayhons

GARNER — Agnes A. Rayhons, 94, of Garner, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2007) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Father Brian Dellaert as celebrant and Father Henry Huber, Father Jerry Kopacek and Father Randy Schon as concelebrants. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. today at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with a combined Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Catholic Workman rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Agnes Anastacia Rayhons, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Kudej) Kopacek, was born on Feb. 28, 1913, on a farm east of Britt. She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township until the eighth grade.

On Sept. 6, 1932, she was married to Henry J. Rayhons at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. They lived on the family farm northwest of Garner where they raised their family and farmed. In 1972, they retired from farming and moved to their new home in Garner.

Agnes loved to bake bread and made delicious kolaches, rolickes and other Czech breads. She was a wonderful caring wife and mother. Agnes took great pride in her family and home. She loved her flowers and had a vase of fresh flowers on her table in the summer. Agnes enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, quilting with her sisters and friends and handiwork. She also made patchwork quilts for all her great-grandchildren.

Agnes was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan and St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. She also was a member of Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Catholic Workman FCSLA Branch W51.

She is survived by her nine children, Francis (Lois) Rayhons of Garner, Henry V. Rayhons (fiancée, Donna Young) of Garner, Teresa (LeRoy) Preuschl of Garner, Evelyn (Paul) Grandgenett of Wesley, Agnes (Jerald) Zeihan of Marshalltown, Laurence (Carole) Rayhons of Lenox , George (Mary) Rayhons of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mark (Kathy) Rayhons of Garner and Mary (Gene) Rasmussen of Ames; 35 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 61 great- grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a brother, Vincent Kopacek of Britt; two sisters, Vivian Formanek of Britt and Marie Brcka of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Henry, in 1981; her parents; a daughter-in-law, Marvalyn Rayhons; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Mildred Wellik, Lillian Chizek, Blanche Paca, Helen Kopacek and Evelyn Kopacek; and brothers, Raymond, Arnold and Francis Kopacek.

In passing, Agnes contributed to mankind by donating her brain tissue to Washington State University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. for Alzheimer’s research.

Gladys M. Adams

MASON CITY — Gladys M. Adams, 82, of Mason City, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2007) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Keith Scott of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the Gladys M. Adams Memorial Fund.

Gladys was born on June 12, 1925, in Mason City, the daughter of Martin M. and Mary L. (Neiss) Tagesen. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1942 and then attended Hamilton Business College.

She married Oliver “Pete” Adams on Oct. 19, 1943 in Northwood. Gladys loved horses. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and feeding the deer.

Gladys is survived by several nieces and nephews; and a special friend from Hospice, Dee Arduser

Dorothy B. Kay

MASON CITY — Dorothy B. Kay, 83, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2007) at the Rockwell Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Paul C. Nelson, St. James Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Dorothy B. Kay Memorial Fund.

Dorothy was born on Nov. 16, 1923, in Goodell Township, the daughter of Henry L. and Olga C. (Neff) Griffen. She moved to Mason City at a young age and attended Mason City schools.

Dorothy married Kermit E. Kay on Jan. 29, 1939, in Mason City. The centerpiece in her life was always her family; they came first. Dorothy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed dancing, reading, bus travel tours and “The Lawrence Welk Show.”

Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Sandra J. Lichman, of Mason City; son, Steve Kay and wife, Ellen, of Mason City; grandchildren, Brad L. Lichman, James R. Kay and Jason S. Kay all of Mason City, Chris Blackmon and wife, Tracy of Goldsboro, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Cody and Autumn Blackmon, of Goldsboro, N.C., and two very dear friends, Leona and Sharon Funk.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kermit; three brothers, Harvey, Kenneth and Marvin; and one sister, Madeline.

MASON CITY — Rick L. Flo, 51, of Mason City, formerly of Lake Mills, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2007) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor David Jordon officiating. Cremation will take place following the service with inurnment to take place at a later date at Salem Memorial Cemetery.

Shirley L. Hackenmiller

ST. ANSGAR — Shirley L. Hackenmiller, 73, of St. Ansgar, died on Friday (Nov. 2, 2007) peacefully, surrounded by her family in Rochester, Minn.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Monsignor John Hemann officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

Shirley was born on Jan. 1, 1934, in Stacyville, to Herb and Agnes (Goergen) Mayer. She graduated from Visitation School in 1952.

Shirley was united in marriage to Ernest Hackenmiller on June 22, 1955, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, and they were blessed with eight children. They farmed in the Stacyville area and moved to St. Ansgar in 1997. She was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion Auxiliary, Southwest Country Circle, and the Rosary Society.

Shirley was a courageous woman battling breast and kidney cancer.

She loved spending time with her family, collecting bells, going to garage sales, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Twins. She enjoyed watching game shows such as “Wheel of Fortune” and “Deal or No Deal” and talking on the phone with her sister, Janice.

She is greatly missed by her loving husband, Ernie; and children, Randy and Nancy of Stacyville, Wanda of Cedar Falls, Brenda of Cedar Falls, John and Sue of Burlington, Mic of Elk Run Heights, Audrey and Terry Milks of Robins, and Denise and Jeff of Monona; grandchildren Molly, Joe and Maria, Tyler, Rachel, Claire, Cassandra, Trey, Cameron, Kylie, and Dylan; great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Kenya, and Joey; sisters Donna and Cliff Mueske, Janice and Melvin Hackenmiller; and brother, John and Darlene Mayer. Sisters-in-law, Gennieve and Bill LeMay, Imelda and Joe Neis, Lorene and Darrell Mayer, Mary Hackenmiller, Bernice Hackenmiller; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herb and Agnes; and by her daughter, Deb.

James ‘Jim’ A. Smith

MASON CITY — James “Jim” A. Smith, 84, of Mason City, died Friday (Nov. 2, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Patti Aurand of First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit or the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Jim was born on Sept. 9, 1923, in Randall, the son of Arthur and Cora (Fisher) Smith. He attended school in Forest City. He married Verna Mae Thornbury on Dec. 3, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and later married Lynnea Bosch on July 23, 1999.

Jim loved to go fishing, boating, golfing, camping and time with his family. He also enjoyed traveling, especially his winters in Texas. Drinking coffee and visiting with friends was a part of his daily schedule. Jim was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Jim is survived by his wife: Lynnea; two daughters: Judy (Eric) Barsness, of Eau Claire, Wis., and Jane (John) Harrod Jr., of Middleton, Wis.; four grandchildren: Susy (John) Stoffer, J. Scott (Susan) Harrod, Matthew (Annette) Barsness, and James (Casey) Harrod; six great-grandchildren; one cousin; and several sisters and brothers-in-law. He is also survived by four step-children: Lonnie, Lori, Sheri, and Julie and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Verna Mae in 1993; one brother, Warren Smith; one sister, Buenetta Kroeze; and stepfather, Russell Pitkin.

David Miller

OSKALOOSA — David Miller, 40, of Oskaloosa, died Friday (Nov. 2, 2007) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of complications from myotonic dystrophy.

Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center, with a time of fellowship and lunch to follow. Burial will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.

David was born on Aug. 2, 1967, the son of Carolyn and Loren Miller, formerly of Tipton. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1986 and attended several trade schools. He lived in the Oskaloosa area where he had worked as a chef.

David was known for his great sense of humor, his love of reading about a variety of topics and mostly a deep love for his three children. Despite his disability, he was always helping others. He knew that this life was only temporary and had set his hope in Jesus Christ as his savior. Even now, he’s celebrating newfound freedom from his illness in Heaven.

In death he gave the lifegiving gift of organ and tissue donation. Despite the hope they have of seeing him again, Dave will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by three children, Jessica, 15, Tiffany,13, and Loren Miller, 9, of Tracey; his mother, Carolyn Miller, of Mason City; two brothers, Major Joel (Judi) Miller, of Fort Knox, Ky.; and Aaron (Diane) Miller, of Mason City; two sisters, Megan (Ken) Bahls, of Mason City, and Kirsten (Chris) Fleck, of Marion, his grandmother, Dorothy Winslow, of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Francis Winslow, of Grundy Center; his father, Loren Miller, of Tipton; and his grandparents, John and Kate Miller, of Aurelia.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the nurses and doctors of the Cardiovascular ICU at the UIHC for their extraordinary care of David.

GREENE — Merle Maurine (Langenhagen) Noble, 100, of 205 S. Fourth St. in Greene, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2007) at the Allison Care Center in Allison.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007 at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. in Greene. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

MASON CITY — Janette Oliver, 84, of 1115 Fourth St. S.E. in Mason City, died Monday afternoon (Nov. 5, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:30 p.m. until Jan’s service at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton Funeral Home.

Janette Oliver was born in Thompson on April 15, 1923, the daughter of Joe and Martha (Johnson) Wessels. She was the youngest of nine children and was confirmed at the Thompson Methodist Church on July 22, 1934. Her mother lovingly nicknamed her “Babe.”

 

Following her graduation from Thompson High School in May of 1941, Jan was employed in Mason City at the Soda Grill and at the Decker plant. In her earlier adult years, Jan found great joy in entering and winning dance contests at the Surf in Clear Lake.

 

Jan was united in marriage to Willis L. Mitchell on Sept. 30, 1943. The couple moved to California in the 1940s. Although the marriage later dissolved, Jan remained in California, the state she grew to truly love!

 

A handsome, Italian man by the name of John Oliver caught her eye. Jan and John were married on April 14, 1965, in Long Beach, Calif. They treasured spending time together dancing and golfing.

 

Jan was known to be a very hard worker. For a span of time in California, she was employed at a defense plant and a nice dinner club; however, her favorite and most rewarding job position was working in sales and as an assistant manager at the exclusive department store, Broadway, in Inglewood. She crossed paths with and assisted numerous well-known stars. Jan took great pride in her always-fashionable appearance!

 

Jan’s beloved John died in 1989. In the early 1990s, Jan retired and moved back to Mason City.

 

In August, Jan entered into the Heritage Care Center where she was convalescing from a broken hip. She continued to miss California yet enjoyed being near her nieces and nephews.

 

Jan is survived by numerous special nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Oliver; her parents; and her eight siblings.

IOWA FALLS — Helen Newton, 91, of Iowa Falls, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2007) at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

 

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Brian King officiating. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.

Harold R. Broitzman

 

NORTHWOOD — The funeral service for Harold R. Broitzman of Northwood will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Pastor Daniel Hart officiating. Interment will be in Wanders Rest Cemetery, rural Gordonsville, Minn.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea and one hour before the service at the church.

 

Harold died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2007) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood. He was 86 years old.

 

Harold was born Oct. 7, 1921, in Shell Rock Township to Bernhard and Lizzie (Wolff) Broitzman. He attended country school and was a resident of Shell Rock Township until he moved to Northwood.

 

Harold was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood since 2001. He had been a member of Zion Lutheran in Northwood, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle and their Brotherhood group.

 

Harold was a farmer and also worked for Holsum Foods and retired from Streater and Co.

 

He was a member of the Eagles and the NFO. Harold loved playing darts, fishing, camping and being a handyman, and loved spending time with his family. He and Doris wintered in Texas.

 

Harold is survived by his children, Gary (Paula) Broitzman, of Hayward, Minn., Barbara Schutz and special friend, Harlan Helgeson, of Northwood, Karen Frondal, of Phoenix, Thomas Broitzman, of Glenville, Minn., Suzanne (Mark) Senne of Northwood, and David Broitzman of Albert Lea, Minn.; grandchildren, Todd (Jody) Broitzman of Emmons, Minn., Dean (Lonna) Broitzman, of Clarks Grove, Minn., Daniel Schutz and fiancée Naomi Gentz of Northwood, Jolene (Cody) Hickle of Northwood, Vicki Solland and fiancé Dave Shaw, and Amber Frondal and special friend Chuck Lohrengel, all of Phoenix, Stephanie Broitzman of Glenville, Minn., Jessica Paulsen and Matthew Lowe of Northwood, and Brianna and Ryan Broitzman, of Albert Lea, Minn.; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Mable Perleberg of Myrtle, Minn., and nieces and nephews; in-laws, Kenney and Lois Gayken, of Glenville, Minn., Velma Bonnerup and Maxine Bonnerup, of Albert Lea, Minn., Nadine Broitzman, of Albert Lea, Minn., Helen Broitzman, of Austin, Minn., Ruby Baumgartner of Aurora, Colo., and Florence Brzezenski, of Albert Lea, Minn.

MASON CITY — Rick L. Flo, 51 of Mason City and formerly of Lake Mills, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2007) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David Jordon officiating. Cremation will take place after the service with inurnment to take place at a later date at Salem Memorial Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 7, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

 

Rick L. Flo was born on Dec. 1, 1955, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Lester A. and Anna (Askildson) Flo. He was married to Mary Lien in September of 1984 in Mesa, Ariz., and they had two children, twins Joshua of Mason City and Christopher of Lake Mills.

 

He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills and attended Lake Mills High School. Rick later owned his own business with his sons, called Flo and Sons Construction.

 

Rick was a man of many talents and he was always willing to give a helping hand to anybody in need. He had a kind heart and a great sense of humor, and always loved a good joke. He could do almost anything, and was kind of a “Jack of all trades.”

 

Rick was very artistic, and made some really beautiful engravings. He was also very creative and had a knack for seeing beauty in things that others might consider mundane.

 

Rick is survived by his wife, Mary; his sons, Joshua (Cassie) of Mason City, and Christopher (Molly) of Lake Mills; a granddaughter, Rowan, of Lake Mills; sisters, Betty (Jim) Groe, of St. Paul, Minn., and Sharon (Lenny) Schiller, of Farmington, Minn.; two brothers, Larry (Karen) Flo of Dallas, Texas, and Jerry Flo of Cathedral City, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Amos ‘Ted’ Anderson

CHARLES CITY — Amos “Ted” Anderson, 82, of Charles City, died Tuesday (Nov. 6, 2007) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. 

Funeral services for Ted Anderson will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with Pastor Gary Van Wert officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Amos Theodore Anderson was born June 26, 1925, at Ames, the son of Peter and Electa Jane (Hughes) Anderson. He received his education from Iowa State Teachers College and Iowa State University.

Ted was a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On Nov. 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Barbara Gravatt in Des Moines. He was the elementary principal at the Washington Grade School in Charles City for 40 years. After his retirement in 1987 he was employed part-time by the University of Northern Iowa as the field supervisor for student teachers.

Ted was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, the VFW, past president of the Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and past member of the Board of Trustees at Upper Iowa University. He was listed in “Outstanding Personalities of the West and Midwest” and was a Charles City Man of the Year.

His interests included hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Ted was an avid golfer and shot his age for 18 holes when he was 76, 77, 78, 79 and 80 years of age.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara Anderson of Charles City; four children, Doug (Cathy) Anderson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dave (Karen) Anderson of Taichung, Taiwan, Dr. Marcia Anderson and life companion, Dr. Victoria Bacon of Norton, Mass., and Brad (Lori) Anderson of Monmouth, Ore.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Wilford, of Vero Beach, Fla.; a brother, Benny (Nadine) Anderson of Healdsburg, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jacob Anderson; and a sister, Ida Toohey.

Helen M. Thornblade


 

Helen M. Thornblade, 94, a resident of Iowa Masonic Health Facility of Bettendorf and Manly, died on Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2007) at the Health Center.

 

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Asbury United Methodist Church of Bettendorf.

 

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

 

She was born in Mason City, on Sept. 24, 1913, the daughter of Carl and Marie (Schmidt) Rausch.

 

She was a 1932 graduate of Mason City High School and completed training at Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

 

For a short time she worked at the U.S. Post Office in Mason City as its first female employee.

 

She was united in marriage to Marlin C. Thornblade in Mason City on Aug. 28, 1938.

 

Helen and Marlin operated Marlin’s Department Store in Manly from 1945 to 1965. Later she was employed as manager of the needlework department at Damon’s in Mason City.

 

Her memberships include Bethel United Methodist Church of Manly and later Asbury United Methodist Church of Bettendorf.

 

She enjoyed singing and listening to music, knitting and crocheting, collecting china cups and a variety of glassware and watching football, Major League Baseball and bird watching.

 

Those left to honor her memory include her daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and John Miller of Cedar Falls, and Carolyn and Don Keeney of Bettendorf; five grandchildren, Brad Miller of Grundy Center and Kreg Miller of Cedar Falls, David (Angela) Keeney of Blue Grass, Ann (Jonathan) Grafft of Geneseo, Ill., and Barbara (Wesley) Parker of Colona, Ill.; six great-grandchildren, Meghan, Lauren and Ian Keeney, Elisabeth and Aidan Grafft and Owen Parker.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlin, on April 26, 1999; her sister, Elizabeth Rausch; her brother, Carl Rausch Jr.; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Theodore and Helen L. Thornblade; and her parents.

Marcia Rae Harms, the daughter of Wayne and Betty (Batton) Draper, was born June 24, 1958, at Fort Dodge. She graduated from Swea City High School in 1976.

 

On Aug. 16, 1975, she was married to Brad Harms at the United Methodist Church in Swea City. They made their home in Buffalo Center until 1979 when they moved to Forest City where Marcia was employed at Winnebago Industries for a few years. They later divorced but then remarried in 2005.

 

On Sept. 21, 1991, she was married to Dennis Engebretson at East Park in Mason City. They lived in Nora Springs and in 1997 moved to Garner. They later divorced.

 

Marcia was employed at 3M in Forest City for 19 years before moving to Knoxville in 2005. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. They were her number one priority in life. She enjoyed being outdoors, camping and watching eagles.

 

She is survived by her husband, Brad of Knoxville; her mother, Betty Draper of Swea City; children, Shanda (Ryan) Malek and their children, Trevor and Trinity, of Osage, Derrick (Katie) Halverson and their son, Jacob, of Forest City, Jamie Julius of North Liberty and Trisha Engebretson of Garner; a stepdaughter, Liz Harms of Des Moines; her former husband, Dennis Engebretson of Garner; a brother, Randy (Sheila) Draper of Swea City; and a sister, Dena (Jay) Davis of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Marguerite Dorothy Elling, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (DuBois) Aller, was born March 20, 1913, in Waukee. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines. Like many young women of her time during the Great Depression, she influenced people in her sphere of influence in a positive way — and changed lives in the process. Her ingenuity, creativity and sheer grit helped her family stretch meals, mend clothing and substitute things at hand for household items that would otherwise have to be purchased. Her ability to handle both the good times and tough times was due in part to her wit and love of life. Marguerite worked at Look Magazine where she met her husband to be.

 

On Dec. 28, 1941, she was married to Cleo Donald Elling in Des Moines. In 1944 they moved to Garner where they purchased and operated the Garner Leader & Signal newspaper for 30 years. They were blessed with three sons.

 

Marguerite enjoyed spending time with her family, visits to her cabin at Spirit Lake, playing in card clubs with her friends, cooking and baking.

 

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner.

 

Marguerite will be greatly missed by her sons, Walter (Kathy) Elling of Garner, Bill (Diane) Elling of Estherville and Mike Elling of Hampton; grandchildren, Jeff (Pam) Elling, Dave (Anni) Elling, Lisa Elling, Tony Elling, Jim (Kari) Elling and Michelle (Eric) Bailey; great-grandchildren, Sam, Megan and Katelyn Elling, Jake Elling, Kaleb and Zander Elling and Alix Bailey; a sister-in-law, Annie Aller of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

Patty was a stay-at-home mother while her children were in school. She would later go on to work at Kmart for 18 years where she would become a supervisor. Patty retired from Kmart.

 

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed time with her family especially her grandchildren and their activities.

Mary Lou was born one of six children to Edward A. Muhlstein and Myrtle Irene Ashlock on June 25, 1932 in Rockwell. She graduated from the Rockwell High School. She attended and became a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church where she was very active in the Woman’s circles and making items for sale at the annual church bazaar. These included doorstops, Christmas ornaments and Kleenex box covers.

She thoroughly enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and picture puzzles, reading Western books, and many other craft projects. She was described as being talkative and engaging when visiting with relatives and friends. She would travel to Minnesota each year to fish around Red Wing, and enjoyed the family trips to Florida and California which included Disneyland with 14 people riding in a motor home.

She was smart as a whip about history and presidents. She loved listening to Lawrence Welk music, watching TV in the great room, socializing with the other residents at the care center and engaging in the physical activities.

She baby sat many children of Rockwell and served her community on the Cemetery Society.

Arlene June Christensen

TITONKA — Funeral services for Arlene June Christensen, 75, of rural Wesley, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Titonka, with Pastor Robin Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Buffalo Township Cemetery in Titonka.

Arlene June Christensen was born on June 9, 1932, at Mason City to Arthur and Emma Johnson Hagg. She grew up near Algona and graduated from the Algona High School in 1949.

Arlene was married to Wilbur Christensen on Dec. 23, 1950, at the First Lutheran Church in Algona. The couple farmed south of Titonka for a time and then lived in South Dakota and Minnesota for a number of years. They moved to the family home south of Titonka in 1968 and have lived and farmed there since.

Arlene was an active member of Doan Methodist Church near Titonka, where she was Treasurer of the U.M.W., served on the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee and was a Communion Steward. When the Church closed in 2003, Arlene became a member of the United Methodist Church in Titonka.

Arlene enjoyed traveling, playing cards and visiting with her many friends over coffee but her greatest joy in life was her family.

Arlene died on Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2007) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., at the age of 75.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbur, of rural Wesley; and her children: Carl Christensen and wife, Kathy, of Sullivan, Ill., Carol Ostercamp and husband, Kevin, of Sullivan, Ill., Alan Christensen and wife, Christa, of Titonka, and Arlyce Farrow and husband, Tony, of St. Germain, Wis. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two brothers: Melvin Hagg and wife, Regina, of Algona, Perry Hagg and wife, Marilyn, of San Diego, Calif.; and her mother-in-law, Gladys Christensen, of Wesley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her great-grandson, Owen Shramek; two brothers, Robert and Arthur Hagg; her sister, Verona Shepherd; and her father-in-law, Clarence Christensen.

UNION — Colleen (Mrs. Rodger) Christensen, 78, of 102 Kearney St., Union, died early Monday morning (Nov. 5, 2007) at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services celebrating Colleen’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Union Community Church with Pastor Rick Shill officiating. She will be laid to rest in Nora Springs at a later date.

Born Colleen Turner on Aug. 29, 1929, in Nora Springs, she was the daughter of Berlie and Dara (Freestone) Turner. She graduated from the Rockford High School’s Class of 1948.

On Sept. 10, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, she was united in marriage to Rodger Christensen. They made their home in rural Marshalltown and Union. Mrs. Christensen was employed as a telephone operator for many years and most recently at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center at the switchboard until retiring after 23 years.

She was a member of the Union Community Church and the Cedar Valley Danes. Colleen loved geneology, her family, embroidery, reading and was a calm, practical person who will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.

Surviving are her loving husband of 57 years, Rodger; her children: Curtis (Hope) Christensen, of Miami, Jon Jay (Debbie) Christensen of St. Louis, Brian (Janet) Christensen of Waterloo; grandchildren: Joy Marie Christensen, Tyler Christensen, Eric Christensen, step-grandchildren: Celeste (Armarl) Gurmo, and Sam (Whitney) Huttig; step great-grandson Miguel; and sister, Katherine (Berne) Ketchum, of Rowan.

In death she has rejoined her parents.

Richard Alan Moore

Richard Alan Moore passed away surrounded by his family on Oct. 30, 2007. Richard was born on Nov. 24, 1930, in Mason City, the son of Fred and Floretta Moore. Richard was a graduate of Mason City High School in 1950.

Following high school, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. After the war he also served in the Air Force stateside until 1959.

Richard loved his family very much but most of all Richard loved Jesus and this in turn resulted in a life lived helping others.

Richard attended Central Assembly of God where he was a member of the Heritage Praise Singers.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother and father and three brothers: Dwaine Miller, Robert and Marvin Moore.

Richard is survived by his wife of 50 years Barbara; and five children: Frederic, Marvin and wife, Laurie, of Londonderry, N.H., Terri Green and husband, Jeff, Kathie Zeszutek and husband, David, Richalle Day and husband, Spencer. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley and Bill Stoyles and their daughters: Holly, Noelle, and Nicole of Mason City; and nephew, Mickey Moore and family, of Paradise Valley, Ariz.

Richard had five grandchildren that he was very proud of: Brett and Brandon Moore, Christian, Eric and Sean Green. Richalle Day is also proudly expecting a sixth grandson. His family and friends love him and will dearly miss him.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 2, 2007 at the Central Assembly of God Chapel. Interment was in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
