Born in Germany, Gunther immigrated to Mason City where he remained a resident until the end of his life. For many years he was employed by Deckers packing plant while at the same time renovating and relocating properties with his brother, Heinz, also deceased.

After his retirement he became well known around the city through his circuit of jobs mowing lawns in the summer and snow blowing in winter during which time he became very close friends with many of his clients as well as remaining in good physical condition while keeping himself active. As a man of great strength of character and remarkable integrity he will be sorely missed by all of those who encountered him in Mason City.

Upon his return, he joined The Music Man Square as program administrator.

Gil believed in leading by example, and his passion for music and love of kids enabled him to push students further than they believed they could achieve. Through music, Gil wanted to teach students such life skills as hard work, self discipline, working as a team, and an appreciation of music. His eye was never on the trophy, but he believed if you focus on the right things by teaching kids the skills they need and instill in them the attitude that they can do it, then the sky is the limit.
