Gene B. Sherman

CLEAR LAKE — Gene B. Sherman, 76, of Clear Lake, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday (May 23, 2007).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake. Inurnment will follow at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home, Wednesday, May 30, followed by a scriptural wake.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa (for the amazing work they do) or to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Gene and his twin sister, JoAnn, were born March 12, 1931, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Gladys and Floyd Sherman. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1949. At MCHS Gene played football, basketball and was on the tennis team.

Gene was married to Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Noll of Clear Lake on Sept. 20, 1950. The marriage produced four sons: William (Bill) of Eugene, Ore., Robert (Bob) of Van Nuys, Calif., and Thomas (Tom) and John, both of Clear Lake.

Shortly after Bill’s birth in 1951, the family moved to Brookings, S.D., where Gene worked for his father’s roofing company until 1961. While in Brookings, Gene took up the game of golf, which became a lifelong passion. In 1961, the growing family, now including Bob and Tom, returned to Clear Lake where they owned and operated the G.B. Sherman Roofing Co. Opportunity once again knocked in South Dakota when in 1968, Gene’s father retired and invited the family to take over his roofing company. A devastating fire at the roofing company warehouse and subsequent business challenges in South Dakota brought Gene, Betty, Bob, Tom and their newest addition, John, back home to Clear Lake for good in 1972. The G.B. Sherman Roofing Co., resumed operation in the North Iowa area and the family purchased a small 20-acre farm on 27th Avenue South.

To indulge Gene’s passion for golf, Gene, Betty, and the boys turned the farm into the Oak Hills Golf Course, which is still operated today by the Tom and Sheila Sherman family. Around 1978, the Shermans also purchased the Lake Theater, which they continue to operate. In a final offering to his golfing muse, Gene, Betty and John built the Arrowhead Golf Course. Arrowhead was built against all odds on a low-lying marginal wetland across from the entrance to Clear Lake State Park and stands as a testimony to Gene’s tenacity and perseverance.

Gene’s family and long-time friends will remember a powerful, vital man with an infectious laugh who loved a good time. His common sense and native intelligence guided many complex projects to successful completion. Emphysema and polyneuropathy wreaked havoc on his health in later years. But even as his health failed, he continued to oversee the family businesses, build beautiful balsa wood and fabric model airplanes, and follow the golfing news, from Clear Lake High School’s recent successes to the professional golf tour. Mercifully, his pain and suffering are over and his family rejoices in his release.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Alta Bourrie (Ray Bourrie) of Flint Mich., and Inez Hubbard (Robert Hubbard) and JoAnn Jewell (Duane Jewell), both of Mason City.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Bill, Bob, Tom and John; and grandsons Jason, Tony and Tyler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Warren A. Tilton Memorial Fund, 123 Fifth St. N.W., Mason City.

Warren Tilton was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Dec. 28, 1926, and was raised in Mason City. After graduating from Mason City High School in 1944, Warren enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he trained to become an aerial gunner. Warren graduated from his training in the top five percent of his class, after which he was attached to a PBM Mariner, a twin-engine flying boat, as an upper deck turret gunner and ordinance man engaged in anti-submarine flights out of Florida. (Warren subsequently served in the Naval Reserve until 1974, attaining the rank of chief petty officer.)

After the war, Warren graduated from Hamilton Business College under the GI Bill. He then worked for the Rock Island Railroad, Standard Oil, and other local firms, until in 1956 he was appointed to the Mason City Police Department. Warren served the department until 1985, retiring with the rank of superintendent of the ID bureau.

Warren married Charlotte Rae Jones of Spirit Lake, Iowa, in 1951, and in marriage lasting 52 years they raised three children: daughter, Mona Grupp of Severna Park, Md., son, Glenn Tilton (deceased); and daughter, Robin Tilton, of Mason City.

In 1972, Warren graduated from North Iowa Area Community College with an associate degree in law enforcement, proudly sharing the stage with daughter, Mona, who graduated at the same time.

Beginning a second career at age 47, while still working with the MCPD, Warren became a registered nurse in 1974, serving as the first male RN at Mercy Hospital in Mason City until 1992.

Warren served his community in many other capacities over the years, attaining leadership positions as scoutmaster, Mason, Red Cross instructor, officer in the National Police Officers Association, and shriner. Warren and his family attended First Methodist Church.

In retirement, Warren Tilton enjoyed reading history, assembling his family’s genealogy, and traveling. He was known for his unfailing sense of fun, his compassion, which was enhanced through his experience as nurse in a psychiatric unit and his tolerance, qualities of character for which he was held in high esteem by family, friends, and colleagues. His sense of humor remained his foremost characteristic to the very end, endearing him to the many who visited or cared for him in his final days. In the end, Warren achieved his earnest desire to pass away on his 56th wedding anniversary.

Warren Tilton was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, and his son, Glenn.

He is survived by a sister, Marcene Paulson, Mason City; brother, Terold Tilton, San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Mona Grupp, Severna Park, Md.; daughter, Robin Tilton, Mason City; granddaughters, Charlotte Grupp (Tempe, Ariz.), Victoria Grupp (Severna Park), Jasmine Lane (Mason City), and Tammi Barnes, (Minneapolis, Minn.); grandsons, Nathaniel Grupp (Severna Park) and Cpl. Richard W. McCarthy

NEW HAVEN — Richard W. McCarthy, 91, of New Haven, passed away Monday (May 28, 2007) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Emergency Room in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2007, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Haven with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a scripture service and sharing of memories at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.

Richard was the second child born to William and Mary (Brandt) McCarthy on Nov. 29, 1915, near New Haven. He was baptized and made his First Communion at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. Rich attended the Mauser country school until age 10 when he started riding his pony to St. Mary’s Academy at New Haven. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1933, one of a class of four. After graduation, he worked at various farm jobs, including helping with filling silo and threshing, working for $1.50 a day. Trapping was another source of income, as well as helping his father on the farm.

In August of 1942, Rich was drafted into the U.S. Army. After basic training he was assigned to the arsenal at Pine Bluffs, Ark. Rich was given the job of courier. His duties included delivering inter-area mail four times a day for seven months. Rumor had it that the WAACs were coming. When they arrived, he lost his job as a courier. He was then assigned to the gas yard at the arsenal, where three kinds of poisonous gas were made. It was his job to drive truck hauling samples of gas in steel tubes. Rich was later assigned a “cushy” job (as he described it) working in a photo lab where he was one of three men trained to run a 35 millimeter training film for 900 troops. The arsenal employed 6,000 persons, many of them civilians. In March of 1944, he was assigned to the arsenal at Huntsville, Alabama, where he acted as a security guard, checking employees on the rotating shift of eight hours on, 24 hours off. He was there until his discharge on Feb. 8, 1946. Rich attained the rank of corporal in the U.S. Army.

After his discharge, he rented the Plunkett farm and raised some hogs. When a gentleman from away bought the Plunkett farm, Rich joined his brother, Dan, in the farming operation at the home place and remained as such until his retirement. After retirement, he helped his brother, Jim, from time to time in the office at New Haven Livestock and Feed. Rich lived with his parents, Bill and Mary, at the home in New Haven, which became his home after the death of both parents. Rich resided at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center for the past three years and seven months. He was a devoted son and neighbor. He was always willing to help a neighbor on the farm at the drop of a hat.

Rich was a 70-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court No. 833, and was a life long member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church at New Haven. He was proud of his service to his country and the fact that he had 62 continuous years of membership in the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Although he never married, Rich had an extended family of many nieces and nephews who he helped parent. They all treasure the valuable lessons he taught them and the great stories he could tell about the “olden” days. Rich is best known by many as one of the best Poker players in the county. He shared his knowledge of the game with nephews who loved to play at the same table with him. He was truly an historian and his memory of dates and events that took place over the span of his lifetime were sharp right to the end.

Rich is survived by one sister, Cae (Bill) Hatton of Denver, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Betty McCarthy, of Osage, and Rosemary McCarthy, who resides at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center; nieces and nephews, Ron, Dennis, and John Slater; Linda Hagen, Carmen Johansen, and Karen Heimer; Mike, Terry, Dennis and Mark McCarthy; Michelle Ashby, Mark Hatton and Marla Hawkins; a number of great-nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends; and a special friend, Kevin Jahnel, who always referred to Rich as his uncle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dan and Jim McCarthy; a sister, Mercedes Slater; three nephews, Jim, Bill, and Gary Slater; and a niece, Anne Elizabeth McCarthy.
