Robert J. Olson

OSAGE — Robert J. Olson, 78, of Osage, died Saturday (May 5, 2007) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Bob was born May 15, 1928, at Osage, the son of Julius and Inga (Linsted) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa. He married Doris Dowd on Aug. 17, 1950, in Lyle, Minn. Bob worked as an auto mechanic in St. Ansgar and Osage. He drove gas transport for the Co-op Oil Co. for 25 years until he retired in 1989. Bob was honored by the Co-op for driving 2.5 million miles without an accident.

He loved gardening, fishing, and enjoyed many fishing trips up north with family. Bob also enjoyed bingo and trips to the river. His family and grandchildren were very important to him and he loved spending time with them.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May, 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Doris Olson, of Osage; his son, Robert (Kathy) Olson of Forest City; his daughters, Betty (Steve) Huffman of Stacyville and JoAnn (Alan) Wagner of Orchard; grandchildren, Angie (Chad) Chadwick of Omaha, Neb., Shawn (Kari) Olson of Forest City, Randi (Tim) Callahan of Farmington, Minn., Robby Huffman of Cedar Falls, Ryan Huffman of Mason City, Nick (Elyse) Wagner of Osage, Melissa Wagner of Orchard and Misty Pollard, of Woodbury, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Morgan Chadwick, Andy and Brooke Olson, Makayla and Karlie Wagner, and Jamison Callahan; one brother, Keith (Delores) Olson, of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jean and Melvin Olson; a granddaughter, Rae Ann Huffman; and an aunt, Olga Olson.

ShirleyDee Strathman

MASON CITY — ShirleyDee Strathman, 76, of 1148 Crestmore Way, died Wednesday (May 2, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. There will be no visitation. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Anatomical Gift Program.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or donor’s choice.

Shirley was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Fairfield, the daughter of Julius and Ruth (Hale) Hilleary. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1949 where she was active in the National Honor Society, Pep Club President, Student Council and the First Girls Glee Club. Following graduation, Shirley attended Parsons College for one year. She would later attend and graduate from North Iowa Area Community College and the University of Northern Iowa.

Shirley married Paul Strathman Oct. 15, 1950, in Fairfield. She taught in the Mason City school system from 1968 to 1991.

Shirley was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Mason City Women’s Club, PEO Chapter LB, Delta Kappa Gamma, Faculty Wives and a past den mother and Girl Scout leader.

She enjoyed knitting, bridge club, puzzles and spending time with her family.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Paul Strathman, of Mason City; daughter, Susan Keil and husband, Bob, of Thompson, Steven Strathman and wife, Pam, of Edina, Minn., and Michael Strathman and wife, Sharon, of Tempe, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; sister, Joy (Bruce) Curtis, of East Lansing, Mich.; brothers, James (Jackie Darr) Hilleary of Placentia, Calif., Jack (Paula) Hilleary of La Selva Beach, Calif., and Morris Hilleary of Palm Springs, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Ruth Hilleary.

Richard B. Thompson

BELMOND — Richard “R.B.” Thompson, 97, a pioneer of the hybrid seed corn business, died Dec. 25, 2006, at his apartment in San Leandro, Calif. He died from complications of a recent stroke.

While attending Iowa State University in the late 1920s, Rich became aware of research in cross breeding varieties of corn. He returned to his home in Belmond and began experimenting in a 2-acre corner of the small family farm and converted a hog house into a dryer using a brooder stove.

Thompson Hybrid Corn Co. was founded in 1934. Through growth and merger and acquisition with Clarke, Carlson and Steckley seed companies, the business was variously known as Tomahawk, Tomco, and Tomco Genetic Giant. In the mid-1960s, a Houston conglomerate, Anderson Clayton Co., acquired the business and merged their brand, Paymaster Seeds, and another acquisition, Haapala Brothers of Minnesota, with Tomco and operated under the name ACCO Seed. Product lines included corn, sorghum, cotton and safflower.

The division headquarters remained in Belmond and Rich was president until his retirement in 1970. He served on several committees of the American Seed Trade Association and U. S. Feed Grains Council during his career in the farm seed business.

Richard Baxter Thompson was born at Olaf, near Belmond, on Nov. 8, 1909. He lived in his hometown his entire life except for two years while attending college and the past year in California to be near his son. He attended rural school until coming in town to attend Belmond High School.

In Belmond, Rich was a co-founder of the Toastmasters Club, an early member of the Lions Club, a fireman for 11 years, a Belmond Library board member for 31 years, and a director on the board of First Belmond Bancorporation for 19 years. He was a member of the Belmond United Church of Christ. Rich was an avid reader, golfer, bridge player, and ballroom dancer.

Rich was preceded in death by his two wives, Margrette Eckardt, and Maxine Nagle.

He is survived by his sister, Gail Hanson, of Hudson, Wis.; a son, Dudley Thompson, of El Cerrito, Calif.; and a stepson, Mark Nagle, of Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the United Church of Christ in Belmond.

 


Vera E. Vickerman

CHARLES CITY — Vera E. Vickerman, 95, of Charles City, died Saturday (May 5, 2007) at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Vera E. Vickerman will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, with Pastor Paul Wilcox of Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Vera Elsie Braend Vickerman was born Dec. 15, 1911, in Floyd County, the daughter of Walter and Elsie (Wobith) Braend. She graduated from the Charles City High School. On June 2, 1941, she was united in marriage to Robert Vickerman at Kahoka, Mo. They resided in Charles City all of their lives. Vera worked at F.W. Woolworth from 1932-1935, J.C. Penney from 1935-1946, the City of Charles City from 1946-1947 and at the South Side Super Market from 1968-1977.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary where she had served as treasurer, and had been very active in PTA work. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting.

Living family members include a son, Keith (Jackie) Vickerman, of Charles City; a daughter, Sharon Vickerman, of Charles City; two grandchildren, Jennifer Vickerman and Andrew Vickerman and his fiancee, Jodee Patterson; two great-granddaughters, Savanah Wadey and Kirah Vickerman; and a niece, Joan (Dr. Gregory) Olson, of Fort Dodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert on Aug. 8, 1968; and a sister, Ruth Braend.

Larry Dean Dickerson

MASON CITY — Larry Dean Dickerson, 63, of 220 Third St. N.E. died Tuesday (May 1, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, with Pastor Tom Healey officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Larry D. Dickerson Memorial Fund.

Larry Dean Dickerson was born Nov. 30, 1943, in Webster City, the son of Lawrence and Margaret L. (Murphy) Dickerson. He attended Clear Lake Community Schools. Larry did cement and iron work for different companies in Iowa, Texas and California.

Larry was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan and NASCAR enthusiast, especially for Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Ward Burton. His greatest love was spending time with his family and friends. Larry also enjoyed the Civil War re-enacting in East Park.

He is survived by his son, Butch Rye, of Rochester, Minn.; siblings, Gary (Sue) Dickerson of Eldora, Janette Blanchard of Newton, Connie Jo (Don) Roberts of Waverly; special friends, Kathy Sage and Gary Ekborg of Mason City; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Margaret Dickerson; sister, Kaye Trampel; brother-in-law, Paul Blanchard; and nephew, Darren Dickerson.

Dorothy Curran

MASON CITY — Dorothy Curran, 91, of 62 Lakeview Drive, died Thursday (May 3, 20070 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to the Dorothy Curran Memorial Fund.

Dorothy was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Britt, the daughter of Cleo and Veronica (Victoria) Foster. She graduated from Britt High School, then worked for Pritchard Auto Co. prior to her marriage.

Dorothy married Leigh R. Curran March 10, 1937, in the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

The Currans moved to Mason City in 1937. Dorothy was an active member of the community volunteering her time and talents for many groups and organizations in North Iowa. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, served on the board of Trustees and Church Council, past president of United Methodist Women, and was a delegate to General Conference, Jurisdictional Conferences as well as Iowa Annual Conference.

Dorothy was a 4-H leader for 28 years and on the 4-H County Committee, Farm Bureau Women County Chairperson, taught Red Cross First Aid and Home Nursing Classes and served on the Disaster Team. She served as secretary to her husband in the Iowa Legislature and was voted Queen of the Senate.

She was a member of Eastern Star, White Shrine, PEO Chapter DZ, Questors and was past president of the YWCA. Dorothy served on the North Iowa Medical Center Foundation Board, the hospital’s philanthropic arm, was a charter member of the Mason City Foundation and a member of the screening committee for the Elizabeth Muse Norris Charitable Fund since its inception in 1983.

Some of her numerous awards include Seratoma Mankind, Seventh Day Adventist Community Service Award, Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen, Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award, American Hospital Association Volunteer Award and in 2000 Dorothy received the Meredith Willson Heritage Award from the Mason City Foundation.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Kaye McDonald, of Moraga, Calif., Jane Burley, of Eden Prairie, Minn. and Gail Curran of Alexandria, Va.; grandchildren, Michelle Smith and husband, A.J., of Alabaster, Ala., Curtis McDonald and wife, Mary, of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Kayla, James, Victoria, Laura and Valencia; sister, Merry Lou Shaw and husband, Alfred, of Wayne, Pa.; sisters-in-law, Mary Beth Foster, of Mason City, Colleen Foster, of Mason City and Lucile Cannon, of San Diego, Calif.; brother-in-law, Marvin Schoneman,of Garner; many niece and nephews.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leigh; brothers, John and David Foster; sisters, Victoria Thorley and Kathleen Schoneman; son-in-law, Robert Burley.

Joseph Perkins

 

MASON CITY — Joseph Perkins, 37, of Mason City, went to be with his Savior, Saturday, May 5, 2007, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, Iowa, with Rev. Steve Palo officiating.

 

Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to the church service.

 

Memorials may be given to the Joseph Perkins Memorial Fund.

 

Joseph Scott Perkins was born on January 10, 1970, in Robbinsdale, Minn., the son of Robert and Sandra (Parker) Perkins. He graduated from Isle High School in 1998.

 

Joseph grew up in Minnesota and moved to Mason City in 1995. He married Cyndy Allison on May 4, 1996, in Mason City.

 

Joseph was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

 

Joseph enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed watching professional wrestling and cooking shows on TV, spending time on the computer, and playing with his dog, Chumley.

 

Joseph is survived by his wife, Cyndy, of Mason City, his mother, Sandra Chaika, of Mound, Minn.; his grandfather, Lyle Parker, of New Brighton, Minn.; his mother and father-in-law, Melvin and Sharon Allison, of Ionia; his puppy, Chumley; one nephew, Justin; four nieces, Kira, Cassidy, Valerie and Marissa; and several brothers and sisters-in-laws.

 

Joseph was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ursula Parker.

Carl Otto Peters

 

MASON CITY — A memorial for Carl Otto Peters will be held at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 11.

 

Carl Otto Peters was born on Aug. 24, 1925, in Mason City and passed away on Dec. 19, 2006 at his winter home in Tucson, Ariz.

 

He was the son of Otto and Emma Peters.

 

Carl was in the United States Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he and Beverly Moore, of Ventura, were married on April 9, 1948.

 

He owned and operated Uptown Motors in Mason City until his retirement, when his two sons took over the management.

 

He and his sons enjoyed restoring antique cars.

 

His family was very special to him. He enjoyed sports, including golf, bowling, boating, water skiing and snowmobiling.

 

In his later years, he enjoyed shuffleboarding and playing cards with his many friends.

 

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, Odd Fellows, Moose and the Elks.

 

Carl was a loving husband and father.

 

Carl was the father of: Kathryn Hetherington and husband, Michael; Douglas Peters and Jill Evenson; Ronald Peters (deceased); Carol Kramer, and Lyn Rysavy.

 

— Grandfather of: Kari, Kris and Korey Peters; Benjamin and Scott Peters; Peter and wife; Jamie and Abby Hetherington; Casandra and Tanya Kramer.

 

— Great-grandfather of: Erie Neswold and Joselyn Jason Miller.

 

— Brother of Max Peters and Ellie Mersereau and husband, Harold.

 

— Brother in-law of Bud Moore and wife, Zoe, Becky Moore and Beth Strickler.

 

He had many nieces and nephews.

Scott W. ‘Scooter’ Sturm

 

BELMOND — Scott W. “Scooter” Sturm, 40, of Belmond, passed away Saturday (May 5, 2007) at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

 

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial will take place at the Belmond Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

 

Scott “Scooter” Sturm, the son of Marjorie Sturm, was born Jan. 1, 1967, in Iowa City. He grew up in the Belmond, Clarion and Hampton areas. Scott graduated from the Hampton High School in 1985. He and Sheri Keeling were married in her parents’ home on Oct. 24, 1991, near Waverly.

 

Scott was a great collector of eagles, miniature motorcycles, collectible knives, and unique pop cans and bottles. He was also an avid card player. Scott was a member of the DDT bowling team, having won several championships.

 

Scott’s pride and joy were his family, including wife, Sheri, and daughter, Kayla, age 14, and son, Zach, age 11.

 

Scott “Scooter” is survived by his wife, Sheri, of Belmond; one daughter, Kayla; one son, Zach; his mother, Marjorie Sturm, of Belmond; mother and father-in-law, Sharon and Gene Keeling, of Waverly; brother-in-law, Tom (Kris) Keeling, of Sheffield; sister-in-law, Sheila (Jim) Jones, of Waterloo; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren.

 

Scott is preceded in death by his grandparents, Nellie and Albert Sturm, as well as his grandmother-in-law, Ella Cagley.

Barbara J. Miller

 

BETHALTO, Ill. — Barbara J. Miller, 72, died at 7:06 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2007, at her home.

 

She was born May 15, 1934, in Ventura, Iowa, to George and Verna (Arnold) Borrill.

 

She married Elton M. Miller Jr. on May 14, 1954, in Ventura.

 

She worked with patient accounts at Saint Anthony’s Health Center for 23 years, retiring in 1976.

 

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Debbie Miller and her life partner, Angie, of Alton, and Cathi Lamie and her husband, Wayne, of Kankakee, Ill.; four sons, Steve Miller, of Monroe, Mich., Don Miller, of St. Louis, Lt. Col. David Miller and his wife, Sandy, of Hanscom AFB, Mass., and Mike Miller and his wife, Deanna, of St. Louis; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenneth Borrill, of Clear Lake.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Harold and Ray Borrill.

 

The Rev. Dennis Laughlin will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Beltline Christian Center, in Alton, Ill. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, Ill.

 

Memorials may be made to Saint Anthony’s Hospice.

MASON CITY — Michael J. Christiansen, 55, of Mason City, died Sunday (May 6, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit following a long illness.

Doris Curran

 

LINCOLN, Neb. — Doris Curran, 96, of Lincoln, Neb., and formerly of Mason City, died Friday (April 27, 2007) at The Monarch Hospice in Lincoln.

 

A private interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

Doris was born on Oct. 18, 1910, near Floyd, the daughter of George and Myrtle (Perrin) Knowlton. She graduated from Floyd High School in 1928 and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. Doris taught at McKinley School in Mason City.

 

She married Lester S. Curran on Dec. 10, 1943, in Worland, Wyoming.

 

Doris is survived by her two sons, Donn and Jon, both of Lincoln, Neb.; sister-in-law, Lucile Cannon, of San Diego, Calif.; brother-in-law, J.F. Wiren, of Austin, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester; brother, Herbert Hershel Knowlton; and sister, Jean Elizabeth Wiren.

NORA SPRINGS — Maxine “Katie” Morphew, 72, of 315 N. Hooker in Nora Springs, died Sunday (May 6, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2007, at the United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs, with Pastor Wendy Johannesen officiating. A private inurnment will be at a later date in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs.

DECORAH — Edith C. Gipp, 88, of Decorah, died on Monday (May 7, 2007) at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah following a lingering illness.

Richard L. ‘Tatter’ Merriss

ROCKFORD — Richard L. “Tatter” Merriss, 78, of 504 First Ave. S.W. Rockford, died Monday (May 7, 2007) at his home of natural causes. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main, Rockford, with the Rev. Patricia Shaw officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 302 W. Main, Rockford, and again one hour prior to services at the church.

Richard was born, one of four children, to Loyd K. and Bertha “Olson” Merriss in Clinton Township, near Sheffield, on Aug. 20, 1928. He was a 1947 graduate from Marble Rock High School.

For the next 30 years he was a radial drill operator for White Farm in Charles City. Following his retirement he was engaged as a house painter.

 For the past 52 years he and his wife have resided in Rockford. Tatter was united in marriage to June Etta Stiller on Oct. 17, 1954, at Osage. To this union were born three children, Netta, Rick and Julie. Over the years he has enjoyed playing “500” and other card games, gardening his vegetable garden and a few flowers, watching pro wrestling on TV and tinkering and fixing things. Whenever a baby or the grandchildren would arrive everything would stop so that he could play with them. He was known for helping everyone and being a Good Samaritan.

During summer he enjoyed being on the river in his johnboat catching fish and turtles. He enjoyed polka music and Spanish music while working. For a period of time he and his wife would go camping and he played on different pool teams. Tatter also made chili at Christmas and pancakes for everyone.

Those surviving are his wife of 52 years, June; daughter, Netta Nelson, of Mason City; son, Rick Merriss and his wife, Cindy, of Rockford; daughter, Julie and her husband, Keith Joyner, of Floyd; six grandchildren, Michelle and Matt LaCoste, Rod and Brittany Merriss, Danielle and Casey Joyner; four step-granddaughters; and eight step-great-grandchildren. 

His parents, two sisters Lorene Keith and Arlene “Sis” Wagner; and one brother Bud Merriss; all preceded him in death.

KLEMME — Lucille J. Guth, 85, a longtime resident of Klemme, died Monday (May 7, 2007) at the Hancock Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit in Britt with her family at her side.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at Klemme United Methodist Church in Klemme with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Lucille Jane Hatch, the daughter of Ray and Jewell (Young) Hatch, was born May 3, 1922, on her parents’ farm at Nemaha, Iowa. She attended Nemaha schools and graduated from Nemaga High School in the class of 1939. She the attended Buena Vista College where she received her teaching certificate following her two years college. She then went on to teach for a time in the Rhinehardt and Albert City Schools systems.

 

Lucille was united in marriage to Everett I. Guth on May 24, 1944, at the Methodist church in Nemaha. Following their marriage they lived for a time on a farm near Meservey. In 1946, they moved to a farm north of Klemme. Lucille and Everett owned and operated the farm for the next 33 years before retiring from active farming in 1979.

 

Lucille was a devoted and dedicated wife and partner on the farm. Her greatest joy was providing for the needs of her husband and nurturing and caring for her children. They will cherish the love and relish the life education and direction that she instilled as precious gift in each of them. Lucille looked forward to any opportunity to spend time with her children and their families whether it was at a family dinner, gathering, or any other occasion that meant time in their presence. They will remember her hard work on the farm with Everett and her many other domestic tasks that were completed with her loving hands. Her grandchildren love to reflect back on times when “Grandma” would babysit with them.

 

Lucille was a longtime devoted member of the Klemme United Methodist Church where she fulfilled many roles including membership in UMC and teaching Sunday school for more than 15 years and serving on the church memorial fund committee. She was a life member of the WSCS (Women’s Society of Christian Service). Her strong faith carried out in all aspects of her life a trait that all who knew her will verify.

 

Lucille had been a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for many years and a long-time member of the Grandmother’s Club where she had held various offices.

 

Lucille and Everett enjoyed many years of square dancing. They loved to travel and camping. They looked forward to wintering in Mission, Texas, for 14 years, the first 12 in a motorhome and the last couple in a trailer home. In recent years, Lucille enjoyed congregate meals at the 4 Point Center in Klemme and the friendship and conversation that came with them.

 

Lucille’s family will cherish the memories of the aroma of her freshly made homemade bars, cookies and pies coming from the kitchen and seeing her yard filled with beautiful daffodils. They will miss her friendly smile, the soft twinkle in her eyes, and the warmth and love which she shared with each of them.

 

Lucille’s memory will be cherished by her surviving daughter, Nancy and husband, David Cartier, of Vienna, Va., and their children, Scott Cartier and wife, Gwen Byard, and their children, Gavin and Gareth, all Mountain View, Calif., and Kristina Cartier, of Herndon, Va.; Lucille’s son, Dennis Guth and wife, Margaret, of Klemme, and their children, Eric Guth and wife, Ashley (Boyken), of Forest City, and Natalie, Anna, Peter, and Lillian Guth, all at home in Klemme; and Lucille’s daughter, Peggy Talarico and husband, Frank, of Omaha, Neb., and their daughters, Angela and Amy Talarico, of Omaha; Lucille’s step-grandsons, Steve Talarico, of Canby, Ore., and John Talarico, of Mollah, Ore.; also surviving is her sister, Evelyn Rockufeler, of Storm Lake; and sisters-in-law, Marvyl Frink of New Hampton, and Amelia Guth of Meservey.

Dennis Michael Waychus was born April 6, 1942, at Mason City a son of Hipolyte F. and Winifred J. (Young) Waychus. He married Kathy Feuring on Oct. 14, 1989, at Coulter, Iowa.

 

He attended St. Joseph Catholic School and was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School, Mason City. Dennis drove truck for over 44 years. He especially enjoyed the years he and Kathy drove together as a “team” and their “trucker buddies.”

 

In earlier years, Dennis raced stock cars, he enjoyed restoring antique furniture, and his Mercedes convertible. He operated a landscaping and lawn care business in Hampton, and found a quiet peace riding the mowers.

 

Dennis’s life was centered on his family and his grandchildren were a great source of joy.

 

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Waychus, of Mason City; two sons, Monty Miller, of Hampton and Nathan (Morgan) Miller of Dows; three daughters by a previous marriage; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Matthew, Warren, William, Hannah, and Madeline; brothers- and sisters-in-law, John (Jean) Neuhaus of Branson, Mo., Bob Brekke of Marshalltown, Linda (Bob) Benson of Dumont; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Brenda Brekke, of Cedar Rapids.

Ronald was born Sept. 17, 1952, in Cresco, the son of Roy and W. Elaine (Leer) Sage. Ron graduated from Mason City High School in 1971. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on Aug. 29, 1971, at Des Moines, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 29, 1975, at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.

 

Ron was united in marriage to Toni (Ross) Sage on July 16, 1976, in Mason City. To this union four children were born. Ron graduated from Hamilton Business College in 1985. He worked for Minnesota Rubber for 17 years.

 

Ron enjoyed classic 60s and 70s music, playing poker, coaching baseball, softball, and umpiring. He was an avid Packer and Yankee fan. Ron’s greatest love was spending time with his family and friends. He was a volunteer VA driver.

 

Ron is survived by his mother, W. Elaine Sage, of Mason City; former wife, Toni Sage, of Mason City; children, Kerri Sage and significant other, Steve Shelton, of Mason City, Cpl. Nathan (Leslie) Sage of Dothan, Ala., Alison and Joseph Sage of Mason City: grandson, Lucas Shelton, of Mason City; siblings, Donald (Jesse) Sage, Tom (Linda) Sage, Jackie Carpenter, Bryan (Carol) Sage, and Tammy (Terry) Claude, all of Mason City; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

MASON CITY — A memorial for Carl Otto Peters will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E. in Mason City.

 

He was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Mason City and passed away Dec. 19, 2006, at his winter home in Tucson, Ariz.

 

He was the son of Otto and Emma Peters.

 

Carl was in the United States Navy during the second world war. After his discharge he and Beverly Moore, of Ventura, were married on April 9, 1948.

 

He owned and operated Uptown Motors in Mason City until his retirement when his two sons took over the management.

 

He and his sons enjoyed restoring antique cars.

 

His family was very special to him. He enjoyed sports, including golf, bowling, boating, water skiing and snowmobiling.

 

In his later years he enjoyed shuffleboarding and playing cards with his many friends.

 

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, AM Vets, Odd Fellows, Moose and the Elks.

 

Carl was a loving husband and father.

Robert Joseph Grandgenett was born Jan. 7, 1942, in Mason City, the second child of Joseph and Florence (Widen) Grandgenett.

 

He graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School in May 1959. While attending high school, Bob played centerfield for the two-time state championship baseball team. He attended and graduated from Northern Iowa Teachers College with a bachelor of education degree. He later obtained a master’s degree the University of Northern Iowa.

 

He started teaching biology in Britt in 1963. During his nearly 43 years of teaching, he encouraged and inspired a large number of his students to careers in the medical and science fields. He also had the pleasure of coaching girls golf with the 1986 team taking him all the way to the state championship.

 

He was very active in his community serving on the Britt City Council from 1986 until 1993, was a member of the Lions Club and the Park Board.

 

He is survived by three children, John Grandgenett, Jeff Grandgenett and JoLynn Mohan; three stepchildren, Cheree Zeigler, Christopher Koele, and Eric Koele; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Judy Greene, Jane Frankl, Mary Cruise and Alice Simmons; and one brother, David Grandgenett.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Lila.

Maxine Katie Morphew, the daughter of George and Carolyn (Gerber) Scheppler, was born at home near Kamrar on Feb. 27, 1935. She was the youngest of four children and lived in Hamilton and Hancock counties prior to moving with her family to a farm near Portland in 1943. “Katie,” as she was lovingly known by her family and friends, attended Nora Springs High School and graduated among the class of 1954.

 

While in high school, Katie met and fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Nolan D. Morphew. Katie and Nolan were united in marriage on May 22, 1955, at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs. They became the proud and busy parents of two sons, Mark and Paul, and a daughter, Nanette.

 

Katie took great pride in showering her family with unconditional love and tending to her home and vegetable and flower gardens. She found great joy in her cooking and baking abilities, often trying new recipes or changing existing recipes, just a bit.

 

Katie loved going shopping with Coleen, rides in the country, gathering once a month with her gal friends to visit and send out statements and decorating and preparing for all the holidays. Katie and Nolan looked forward to vacation times in the homes of their children and grandchildren.

 

Katie is described by her family as a loving and caring woman who always placed everyone else first and above her own needs. She was brave, strong, upbeat and positive throughout her life and her illness.

 

Katie will be dearly missed by her husband of nearly 52 years, Nolan Morphew, of Nora Springs; her two sons, Mark Morphew of Red Wing, Minn., and Paul Morphew of Black River, Wis.; her daughter, Nanette Morphew, of New Richmond, Wis.; her sister, Coleen Whipple, of Mason City; and her brother, Robert and Carolyn Scheppler, of Rockford. She will also be cherished in the hearts of her grandchildren, Abby Morphew, Katie Ann Morphew, Nicole Morphew and Alex Morphew and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding Katie in death are her parents, George and Carolyn Scheppler; and her brother, Willard Scheppler.

Bruce Girton

 

AUSTIN, Texas — Bruce Girton, 77, of Austin, Texas, passed away on Jan. 17, 2007, at his home.

 

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with the Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating.

 

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

Bruce Girton was born on Nov. 14, 1929, in Hampton, Iowa, the son of Russell and Margaret Girton. He joined the family feed business in Mason City in 1951 and raised his family there.

 

In 1982, Bruce retired from the family business and became treasurer of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church, moving to Des Moines with Gloria. Upon Bruce’s retirement from that position, Bruce and Gloria moved from Des Moines, to Paradise Park in Harlingen, Texas.

 

In 2006, for health reasons, they moved to Austin, Texas, to live near their son, Paul, and his family.

 

Bruce is survived by his wife, of 56 years, Gloria. He is also survived by two sons and a daughter and two grandsons, Paul and his wife, Deisy, and son, Walter, Judson and his wife, Miriam, and Margaret Harding and her husband, Mark, and son, Jonathon.

 

He was preceded in death by a son, Russell; and his parents.

Irene M. Schultz

 

MASON CITY — Irene M. Schultz, 89, a resident of Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, formerly of Nora Springs, died Sunday (May 6, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

 

Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. James Turner officiating.

 

Viewing will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs. Inurnment will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, at a later time.

(Alice) Irene Morgan Schultz was born April 18, 1918, at Bonair, the daughter of Neva Bawden Morgan and Leon Morgan. She grew up on farms in the Bonair, Lime Springs, and Cresco areas along with her brothers, Paul, Eugene and David, and her sisters Janette and Edith. Irene attended rural schools until high school, then Cresco High School, where she graduated in 1935.

 

Following high school, she attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, earning special awards for shorthand and citizenship. Upon completion of her secretarial training, she worked at the Mason City Congregational Church office.

 

While living in Mason City with friends, she met Percy Schultz of Nora Springs. They were married at the Congregational Church Feb. 4, 1940. Together they farmed on what is now the century family farm north of Nora Springs. To their union two children were born: Thomas and Jacqueline.

 

In addition to being a farm wife, Irene worked at the ASCS office in Mason City, Iowa, enjoying the daily contact it gave her with farmers from all over the county.

 

She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and was especially active in the Nora Springs United Methodist Church, its mission programs, and UMW. Some years ago, she compiled a written history of the church, of which the Schultz family had been members since the 1880s.

 

Irene was also active in Sunshine Circle, Rebekahs, the North Iowa Genealogy Club, the Kinney Pioneer Museum, Grey Ladies, and WTCU. She served as an officer for many years in her Rebekahs’ chapter and was involved in regional and state activities. She volunteered in the Genealogy Room at the Mason City Library, took pride in her membership in the DAR, and greatly enjoyed trips with her friends to Salt Lake City for family research as well as trips to Denver, Colorado, to visit her daughter, and trips to West Virginia and Washington, D.C., with her sister.

 

Irene spent numerous hours at auctions, adding to her collection of antiques. She delighted in spending time with her granddaughter Lisa and with her great-grandchildren, Alex and Allison. Cooking was among her special skills, earning her the nickname “Grandma Yum Yum.”

 

A victim of Alzheimer’s disease, Irene spent her final years at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City, where she enjoyed their church services, jigsaw puzzles, bingo, music activities, and the compassionate care of their staff.

 

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Percy; her son, Tom; her brother, Eugene; and her parents.

 

Left to celebrate her life are her daughter, Jacqueline and husband, Darrell Chayne, of Aurora, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Pat Schultz, of Nora Springs.; granddaughter, Lisa and husband, Steve Templeton, of Clear Lake; great-grandchildren, Alex and Allison Templeton; two sisters and brothers-in law, Janette and Walter Howe,of Keokuk, and Edith and Tom McAplin,of Villisca.; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Paul and Evelyn Morgan of Cresco, David and Phyllis Morgan of Arlington, Iowa, and Verna (Mrs. Eugene) Morgan of California. Also left to cherish her memory are numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth James McMenimen

 

PIERZ, Minn. — Kenneth James McMenimen, 89, formerly of Dougherty, died Tuesday (May 8, 2007) at the Pierz Villa in Pierz, Minn.

 

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 13, in Dougherty.

 

Kenneth James McMenimen was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Dougherty to Michael and Margaret (Husse) McMenimen. He married Dayle Phillips on Sept. 18, 1943.

 

He worked for Osco Drug for 35 years. After retirement he moved back to Dougherty where he served two terms as mayor.

 

After the death of his wife he moved to Brainerd, where he lived until moving to the Pierz Villa, Pierz, Minn.

 

He attended the University of California and Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg, Ill.

 

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and with the 1st Marines as pharmacist first class. He was awarded the Silver Star medal.

 

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was a member of St. Francis Church.

Surviving children are Marlene (Ed) Roach of Brainerd, Minn., Mary (Mike) Morris of Brainerd, Minn., Gregory (Marilyn) McMenimen of E. Ruth Alvina Charlson


 

LAKE MILLS — Ruth Alvina Charlson, 95, of 302 Second St. N.E., formerly of Lake Mills, died Monday (May 7, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

 

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. W. Paul Weeg officiating. Interment will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Ruth was born May 28, 1911, on a farm in Mount Valley Township, Winnebago County, the daughter of Jacob and Tomina (Ramsey) Rusley. She attended rural school and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1929.

 

Ruth married Milton Charlson Nov. 27, 1930, at Winnebago Lutheran Church by the Rev. H.F. Huseth. Milton and Ruth celebrated 60 years of marriage in 1990.

 

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and church circle. Ruth was also a 50-year member of Queen Rebekah Lodge in Lake Mills.

 

She entered Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, in April 2002. She enjoyed playing cards and games at Good Shepherd with her three special friends. Ruth enjoyed the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Ruth’s family would like to thank the staff at Good Shepherd for the wonderful care and love she received.

Orla L. Johnson

 

MASON CITY — Orla L. Johnson, 89, of Mason City, died early Tuesday morning (May 8, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 11, at The Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery in Rockwell.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City. A Moose memorial service by the Women of the Moose will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Orla Lee Johnson was born March 21, 1918, in Unionville, Mo., to Clyde and Ruth (Jones) Bailey. She was one of two children born to her parents and was educated in Mason City. She had lived most all of her life in Mason City. Throughout her adult life Orla had been a wonderful homemaker and had been active with the Moose Lodge No. 1328, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post No. 733 and the Young Heart Grandmothers’ Club, all of Mason City.

 

Orla was united in marriage to Orville Edward Johnson on Nov. 10, 1939, in Mason City. Orla was a devoted homemaker, mother, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma.

 

Some of Orla’s passions included a tremendous love for her family, children and grandchildren. She always enjoyed eating and shopping with her friends Barb, Eva and Merilayne. Orla will be best remembered as being energetic and always on the “Go.” She was lively, vivacious and a person who was always upbeat and happy. Her interests included playing cards, especially Skip-Bo and was well known for making great chocolate pies and always being family oriented.

 

Orla will also be remembered for being a kind, gentle and a very giving woman. Her family describes her as being the sweetest woman on earth.

 

She treasured her time spent with her family. Orla will be cherished in memory to many who have shared in her life.

 

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Orla’s life are her three children, Audrey (John) Moor of Clear Lake, Ronald Johnson Sr. and his wife, Vanetta, of Mason City, and Janice (Duwayne) Groat of Gig Harbor, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Virgil Severin

 

CHARLES CITY — Virgil Severin, 71, of Charles City, died Wednesday (May 9, 2007) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

 

Funeral services for Virgil Severin will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, 807 S. Main in Charles City, with Pastor Margaret Hutchens officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

 

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

 

Virgil James Severin was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Iowa City, the son of Albin James and Pearl (Brooks) Severin. He was the youngest of eight children. Virgil graduated from the Charles City High School in 1958 with what he declared to be “the best bunch of people in the world.” He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was a disabled veteran.

 

On Feb. 18, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carole Kay Knight at New Hampton. Virgil was well known in this area as an outgoing friendly man. He worked in numerous grocery stores and at Salsbury Laboratories, now Fort Dodge Animal Health, for 25 years.

 

He enjoyed carving, attending high school sports, watching John Wayne movies and always looked forward to the times he could spend with his grandchildren. Virgil was a volunteer at the Charles City Food Box. He was a man of God and spent much of his time working at the First Christian Church where he was a member, served as an elder and called on shut-ins every Sunday. Now God has called him home.

 

Living family members include his wife, Carole, of Charles City; four children and their families, Jordon (Holly) Severin, Taylor and Molly of Raymond, Richard (Mia) Severin, Zach, Noa, Nathan and Ella of Baltimore, Md., Carrie (Greg) Martin, Jacob and Benjamin, of Cresco, and James (Teresa) Severin, Payton and Reegan, of Charles City; two brothers, Lloyd (Opal) Severin of Charles City and Frank (Laura) Severin of Oelwein; a sister, Foneal Patterson, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eddie and Jack; and two sisters, Opal Faulkner and Gert Yearous.
