Urban L. Brumm

STACYVILLE — Urban L. Brumm, age 86, of Stacyville, died Saturday (May 19, 2007) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Urban was born on Feb. 10, 1921, in Stacyville, the son of John E. and Anna M. (Simon) Brumm. He was baptized at Visitation Catholic Church and attended school at Visitation Schools, graduating in 1938. Urban was united in marriage to Evelyn Mueller on his 21st birthday, Feb. 10, 1942, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer. After their marriage, they farmed together in the Stacyville area, retiring in 1984. They moved from their farm into Stacyville in 1989.

Urban was an avid card player. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was a member of Visitation Catholic Church and the National Catholic Order of Foresters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at the Visitation Catholic Church, where there will be a Scripture service at 4:30 p.m. and a Foresters Rosary at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Urban is survived by his five children: Elaine (James) Havlovic of Stacyville, Kenneth (Judy) Brumm of Apple Valley, Minn., Vernon Brumm of Mason City, Audrey (Roy) Stefan of Cedar Falls, and Jean Brumm of Osage; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter, one step great-granddaughter; three sisters-in-law: Mary Brumm of Stacyville, Avis Brumm of Crescent City, Calif., Luella Brumm of Washington, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn, (March 16, 2003); four brothers, Delphin Brumm, Morris Brumm, Francis Brumm and Julius Brumm; five sisters, Agnes Theobald, Sister Angeline Brumm, Barbara Kula, Magdaline Royer and Clara Burrill.

Deborah Ann Ballard

HAMPTON — Deborah Ann Ballard, 54, of Hampton, passed away on May 19, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton from 5 until 8 p.m. today.

Debbie was born on Oct. 26, 1952, in Louisville, Ky., to William L. and Mary Ann (Schaefer) Brewer. She attended schools in Louisville, graduating from Assumption High School with the class of 1970 and obtained her business degree from Sullivan Business College.

She was married to G. William Ballard Jr. (Bill) on Nov. 10, 1979, in Louisville, Ky. She worked for several businesses. Debbie was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and landscaping, fishing and animals, and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Debbie is survived by husband, Bill Ballard, of Hampton; daughter, Kristina Anne Marie, and husband, Daniel Raisch, of Hampton, son, Michael Ballard of Hampton; mother, Mary Ann Brewer, of Louisville, Ky.; three grandchildren; sister, Karen M. Brewer, of Louisville, Ky.; and brother, Brian L., and wife, Carol Brewer, of Louisville.

She was preceded in death by her father.

William ‘Bill’ Bailey Alexander

NORTHWOOD — William ‘Bill’ Bailey Alexander, 79, of Northwood, died Saturday (May 19, 2007), at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hart officiating.

Burial will be at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn., with military honors conducted by members of the Honor Guard at Fort Snelling.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

The family of William Alexander has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, 232 Second Street SE, Mason City, or to the Iowa Heart Association in his memory.

William (Bill) Bailey Alexander was born on July 7, 1927, in Jackson, Minn., the son of Charles Ross and Leona (Bailey) Alexander. He graduated from St. Paul Central High School in 1945. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on June 18, 1945, in St. Paul, Minn., and served on the USS LSM-101 Navy ship during World War II, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 23, 1946, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Bill graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in agriculture and taught agriculture at Blue Earth High School.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Sechler. Bill, along with his family, moved to Iowa in 1958 and he managed the feed mill in Kensett. Bill also worked in the agribusiness for various companies, and B&K Lumber Company in Northwood, before retiring from Pioneer, international computer division, in 1993.

He was united in marriage to JoAnn (Gullickson) Carlson on Aug. 19, 1978, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Bill did volunteer work and was past president for Mended Hearts, and the Iowa Heart Association. He was also involved in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Crusillo, was former church council member at First Lutheran Church, and taught Sunday school at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and was on the Northwood-Kensett Booster Club. Bill also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golf.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, JoAnn Alexander of Northwood; two sons, William (LuAnn) Alexander, Jr. of Winthrop, Minn., Charles (Beverly) Alexander of Lakeville, Minn.; stepchildren, Kim (John) Kraft of Winter Haven, Fla., Kevin (Lisa) Carlson of Christiansburg, Va., and Kari (Kirk) Stoa of Maple Grove, Minn.; six grandchildren, Matthew (Lindsay) Alexander, James (Christina) Alexander, Rachael (Michael) Newman, Jenna Alexander, Brianna Alexander, and Brittany Alexander; ten step-grandchildren, Melanie and Bryce Carlson, Kyle, Ryan and Todd Kraft, Taylor, Nicholas, Jana, Joshua, and Emma Stoa; two sisters, Betty (Edward) Hanna of California, and Norma (James) Jensen of Edina, Minn.; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

John G. Rovang

JOICE — John G. Rovang, 91, of Joice, died Saturday (May 19, 2007) at his home in rural Joice. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, with Lay Pastor David Halverson and Pastor Dan Burton, officiating. Burial will be at Beaver Creek Cemetery in rural Kensett.

John Glen Rovang was born on Nov. 21, 1915, in rural Fertile Township, the son of Renus G. and Betsy (Rusley) Rovang. He was baptized and confirmed at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice. He received his elementary education in a rural school in Fertile Township and graduated from the Lake Mills High School in 1934. He attended Luther College and Iowa State University.

 

He began his teaching career at New Providence, Iowa, where he was high school vocational agricultural instructor. He later taught vocational agriculture and the Veterans Agriculture Program in the Forest City school system and the North Iowa Area Community College, and was also engaged in farming.

 

On July 6, 1942, he was married to Ruth Ward of Swaledale, Iowa. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2006.

 

John served on several state and local committees. He served as president of the Worth County Farm Bureau, and president of the Worth County Historical Society. He served several years as Worth County Soil Conservation Commissioner and was on the County FHA Board. In 1988, he was appointed by then-Gov. Terry Branstad to a six-year term on the Iowa State Judicial Selection Commission and he also served as an Older Iowa Legislative Representative to the Iowa Legislature.

 

He served as director on the Iowa State Poultry Board and was named Iowa Master Egg Producer in 1961. John was a member of Winnebago Area Retired Teachers, where he served as vice president and legislative chair.

 

John was a member of the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church where he served as congregation president, Sunday School teacher, member of the Cemetery Board and held several other church offices. After Beaver Creek’s closing, he became a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church.

 

John and Ruth enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe to visit the areas of their ancestors. John was especially interested in genealogy, and researched his family tree back to the 1600s.

 

John was an avid reader and had a special interest in the history of his community and Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. He researched the history of Beaver Creek after its closing, and wrote a history of his life and family.

 

His hobbies included antiques and he restored several antique and collector cars. He served as secretary of the North Iowa Vintage Auto Society.

 

John was blessed with a special gift of memory and was often contacted by others regarding information on past historical events.

 

John was a devout Christian man and loved his family.

 

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons,Douglas (Rosaline) of Rochester, Minn., and Richard of Eagan, Minn.; daughter, Donna (Brent Orton) of Mason City, and six grandchildren, Michelle (Bryan) Burke, Ann (Matt) Wolff, Mark John, Matthew, Chrismar and Kiersten Orton; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Burke and Abigail Wolff.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark John; brother, Marvin; and sister, Jeanette.

Mayzee Wright

 

OSAGE — Mayzee Wright, 72, of Osage, died Monday (May 21, 2007) at her home in Osage.

 

Mayzee was born on July 2, 1934, at Riceville, the daughter, of Emil and Minnie (Reckner) Ring. Shortly after her birth, Mayzee’s mother died. Two years later, her father married Alene Klobassa, who raised Mayzee and Alene’s two daughters, Lois and Marlene.

 

Mayzee graduated from Riceville High School at the age of 16. She moved to Osage, and worked at the Farm Bureau office.

 

She met Eugene Wright and they were married on Dec. 14, 1952, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. Mayzee worked for Cummings and Kratchmer Law Firm for 25 years. Eugene and Mayzee started Wright Plumbing and Heating in 1977, where she worked until the present time.

 

Mayzee enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, crocheting, knitting, shopping, and playing cards and bridge with friends.

 

Mayzee and Eugene had a cottage on Clear Lake for 15 years, where she spent many happy days on the lake.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

 

Mayzee is survived by three sons: Dean Wright and wife, Julie, of Clear Lake, and children Nicholas and Diana; Douglas Wright and wife, Jean, of Osage, and children Jonathan, Stephanie and Emily; and David Wright and wife, Cornelia, of Clear Lake, and children, Justin, Jaden and Hailey; two sisters, Lois Dinger, of Riceville, and Marlene (Glen) Dillon, of Cresco.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene Wright in 2004; and a granddaughter, Chelsey Marie Wright;

Dorothy was born on Dec. 30, 1920, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Julius and Lillian (Stein) Boisen. She graduated from Franklin High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1939. She attended MacMurray College for Women in Jacksonville, Ill., and the University of Iowa.

 

Dorothy married Phillip M. Austin on Aug. 8, 1943, in Cedar Rapids.

 

The Austins lived in Waterloo, Ventura, Cedar Falls and moved to Mason City in 1976. Following her husband’s death, Dorothy moved to O’Fallon, Mo., in December of 2004.

 

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Occidental Study Club and the Cedar Falls Women’s Club.

 

She enjoyed knitting, being a homemaker and taking care of her family.

 

Dorothy is survived by her son, Charles A. Austin and wife, Pamela, of Denver, Iowa; daughter, Jo Ann Borglum and husband, Michael of O’Fallon, Mo.; grandchildren, Brooks, Kyle and Jennifer Borglum.

 

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, brother and husband, Phillip.

Gerhardt (George P.) Smidt was born on Aug. 18, 1918, in rural Kanawha, to Peter and Grace Luppen Smidt. George attended rural schools near Wesley.

 

George married Bertha Huisinga on Aug. 22, 1940, at the home of Bertha’s parents near Woden. George and Bertha farmed until 1983, south of Woden. After retirement to Woden, George worked for the town of Woden as street commissioner for several years.

 

George was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church. George and Bertha served for many years as 4-H leaders and as custodians of the Woden Christian Reformed Church.

 

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, roller-skating, gardening and, in particular, spending time with his family.

 

George is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bertha; son, Robert and wife, Phyllis, of Burnsville, Minn.; and daughter, Gloria and husband, Mark, of Pekin, Ill. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are sisters, Della Pommer and Grace Kruger, and her husband Albertus, all of Britt.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Peter.

MASON CITY — Barbara R. Barg, 77, of 4 Woodbine, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2007) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Betty Marsh

CLEAR LAKE — Betty Marsh, 79, 1406 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Monday (May 21, 2007) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m Saturday, May 26, at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery. 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Betsy Adeline “Betty” was born Oct. 6, 1927, in rural Garner, the daughter of John A. and Rosina (Maitland) Hyde. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1945. 

Betty married Albert Marsh on Aug. 11, 1946, at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. They lived on a farm south of Clear Lake until they moved to town in the early ’70s.

Betty enjoyed dancing at the Surf, sewing, being in her flower garden, and watching birds and squirrels out her kitchen window. She collected owls. Betty was a member of the Jolly Jane Club and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

CLEAR LAKE — Rita Donelle Grogan Cusack, 83, of Clear Lake, formerly of Chariton and Fonda, passed away on Monday (May 21, 2007) at the Good Shepherd Center in Mason City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake with the Rev. John Tilp officiating.

 

Rita Donelle donated her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. Inurnment will be at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Chariton.

 

A rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with visitation from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the time of the funeral.

Rita Donelle was born on April 4, 1924, in Beaconsfield, Iowa, the daughter of Michael John Grogan and Bernice G. (Eason) Grogan. She graduated from Chariton High School in 1941. She attended the University of Missouri and received a bachelor of science in nursing from the St. Joseph School of Nursing at Creighton University of Omaha, Neb. She later completed a B.A. in education from Buena Vista in Storm Lake and a master’s degree from Drake University. She also completed further graduate work at the University of Iowa in geriatrics.

 

On Dec. 27, 1951, Rita Donelle was married to J. W. ‘Bill’ Cusack of Creston. Throughout their marriage the family enjoyed living in Chariton and Fonda, as well as spending summers at Lake Okoboji.

 

Rita Donelle had a varied career as she worked at the Lucas County Hospital and taught for both Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Fonda and the Iowa Central College Vocational Hayes School project in Storm Lake. Her husband, Bill, passed away in 1977 and she returned to Chariton. She retired in 1994 as a gerontologist with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa.

 

Rita Donelle moved to Clear Lake and enjoyed participating in many activities in the community. She participated in classes at the Clear Lake Arts Center and North Iowa Area Community College. She especially enjoyed writing as a result of John Skipper’s creative writing classes. She was a volunteer at the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and a volunteer docent at the MacNider Art Museum.

 

She enjoyed reading and was a member of several book clubs. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter LE, American Legion Auxiliary, Clear Lake Women’s Club, Clear Lake Friendly Garden Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Mensa.

 

Rita Donelle is survived by her son, Michael, of Minneapolis, and daughter, Mary Alexander and husband, Tom, of Clear Lake. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Caitlin and Patrick Alexander, both students at the University of Iowa. Also surviving is her sister, Mary Siddall and husband, Gene, of Ada, Mich.; her mother-in-law, Mary Cusack, of Creston; sister-in-law, Ann Drake and husband, John, of Edina, Minn.; and brother-in-law, Thomas Haney, of Asheville, N.C. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. ‘Bill” Cusack; two sons, John William II and Matthew Gerard; her parents; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Swanson Cusack.

Della, the daughter of Peter and Grace Luppen Smidt, was born on Dec. 28, 1919, on a farm near Kanawha. She received her education in the Wesley school district. She was baptized and made public profession of faith at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church in 1935.

 

Della was united in marriage to Harold Pommer on Dec. 15, 1938, at Della’s Grandpa Luppen’s home north of Kanawha. They made their first home on a farm southwest of Woden and later moved to a farm south of Woden. After retirement they moved to Britt. She was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church and transferred her membership to the Britt Christian Reformed Church after moving to Britt.

 

In her retirement years she and her husband, Harold, enjoyed traveling and visiting with their children and grandchildren. She was an active member of the Britt Senior Citizens for many years. Della enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, embroidery work, and sewing, which included making many quilts.

 

She is survived by her two daughters, Arlis and husband, Norman Ruter, of Denver, Colo., and Beverly and husband, Robert Twistol, of Orlando, Fla.; three grandsons, Greg and wife, Dana, Randy and wife, Sarah, and Scott and wife, Amy; two granddaughters, Sara and husband, Kyle, Christy and husband, Maro; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace and husband, Albertus Kruger; four sisters-in-law, Bertha Smidt, Gladys Smidt, Hannah Mae Meyer, and Winifred Pommer; step-sister, Johnette Kayle; and many nephews and nieces.

McKayla Joy Aukes was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Oct. 8, 1997, the daughter of Mark and Ranae (Lange) Aukes. She was baptized in the Methodist faith and was attending the third grade at Forest City Elementary School.

 

McKayla was a kind-hearted young girl who loved her family and lived her brief time here to the fullest. There were so many things she enjoyed doing: spending time with Grandma Betty in Klemme and playing with her cats and pet rabbit, Blackie; sleep-overs with her friends; taking the whole family out to the movies; spending time with her cousins and riding horses.

 

She liked hearing stories about when she was “little” and always wanted to hear stories from when mom and dad were “little.” She loved all the trips for summer school and was active in Junior Theater in the summertime. In 2006, she was chosen “Little Miss Puckerbrush” and got to ride in the parade.

 

A family trip to Hawaii in January 2006 was a dream come true for McKayla. She got to see the ocean and go snorkeling, took a helicopter ride around the islands, enjoyed a deep-sea submarine trip, did some horseback riding and splashed in the surf at Waikiki Beach. She attended a Hawaiian luau and was delighted with all the flowers and dancing.

 

McKayla is survived by her parents, Mark and Ranae Aukes, of Forest City; her sister, Kelley Aukes; and nephew, Aiden, of Waverly; grandmother, Betty Lange, of Garner; “grandma and grandpa” Marvin and Genevieve Dearing of Buffalo Center; uncles, Bert (Barb) Lange, Harlen (Sarah) Aukes, Dennis (Sandy) Aukes, and Larry (Debbie) Aukes; aunts, LeAnn Lange and Jeannie (Brad) Grotewold; and many cousins and friends.

Elizabeth “Betty” D. Jones, the daughter of Floyd and Janet (Peck) Fields, was born May 31, 1915, at Clarinda. At the age of eight, she moved with her family to Des Moines. Betty graduated from Roosevelt High School and Drake University. At Drake she was active in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After graduation from Drake, she worked in the state chemist’s office in Des Moines.

 

On Oct. 19, 1940, she was married to Donald O. Jones in Des Moines. Betty and Don enjoyed traveling and entertaining. Family and friends will miss her generosity, strength and sense of humor.

 

Betty’s interests included sewing, cooking and crafts. She enjoyed her bridge club and book club. Her travels took her to many foreign countries as well as domestic locations and she collected articles and pictures to record and document her experiences. Recently, Betty resided at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines until health concerns necessitated a moved to the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City to be closer to her daughter.

 

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

 

Betty is survived by her daughter, Janet (Gus) Erickson, of Clear Lake; two grandsons, Dr. Brad (Kristi) Erickson of West Des Moines and Brian Erickson (fiancée, Jenny Guddall), of Savannah, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren.

Marj was born Aug. 28, 1923, in Thompson, to Sumner E. and Ruby (Vickerman) Isaacs. She graduated from Thompson High School in 1941 and from Capital City Commercial College, Des Moines, in 1942. She was employed as a stenographer in the Detroit field office of the FBI from 1942-45. She later worked for H.J. Heinz Co. in Des Moines, International Harvester in Mason City, and finished her career as executive secretary at Lehigh Portland Cement for 22 years until retiring in 1985.

 

She and Ken met in the college band where they both played the coronet. She was united in marriage to Lt. Kenneth L. Phillips on June 23, 1945.

 

Marj was an accomplished pianist, composer and music lover. She sang in the First United Methodist Church Choir for 40 years. She was a 60-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron of Unity Chapter 58 and later as Grand Electa in 1968.

 

Marj is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ken, of Des Moines; son, Rex Phillips, of Des Moines; and daughter, Gay (Ron) Russell, of Adel; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Obed Jerome Ladd was born on Feb. 19, 1945, in Dodgeville, Wis., the son of Emery and Gladys (Burtness) Ladd. He attended Northwood schools and was a graduate of Northwood High School.

 

Following high school, Obed entered the United States Army. He served our country in the Vietnam War where he received numerous medals. After being honorably discharged, he worked road construction in Wisconsin, later going to work for Burlington Northern Railroad. Obed recently retired from the Union Pacific Railroad.

 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to Alaska, rooting for the Green Bay Packers, spending time with friends, especially his little friend Cadence Hyatt.

 

He is survived by an aunt, Iva Nell May, of Grass Valley, Calif.; along with many cousins, other relatives and friends.

 

His parents, Emory and Gladys preceded him in death.

Francis Alexander

 

ANKENY — Francis Alexander, 74, of Ankeny, died Wednesday (May 23, 2007) at his home.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Saylorville Baptist Church. Interment will be in Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

 

Francis was born March 27, 1933, in Spring Hill, to Dorwin and Dorothy (Newell) Alexander. He married Bessie Rorebeck on June 1, 1952. Francis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.

 

Francis was a member of Saylorville Baptist Church. He enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, remodeling homes and attending his grandchildren’s activities.

 

Survivors include two children, Terry (Diane) Alexander, of Ankeny, and Brenda (Ivan) Good, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Shawn Alexander, of Naperville, Ill., Stacy Alexander, of Ankeny, and Kaylee Good, of Clear Lake; and one sister, Marilyn Bauer, of Indianola.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie, two brothers, Donald and Lowell, and his parents.

 

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ankeny Funeral Home.

HAMPTON — Robert Philip Strand, 19, of Hampton, passed away Wendesday (May 23, 2007) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Bob was born Jan. 1, 1988, in Hampton, to Philip and Pauline (Rieken) Strand. He attended schools in Hampton and graduated with the class of 2006. Bob was currently attending NIACC in Mason City. During his junior high school years, Bob was active in sports, Boy Scouts and church activities.

 

Throughout high school, he enjoyed drama and speech and loved history, physics, mock trial and tennis. He sang in the chorus, played the violin and harmonica and loved playing frisbee golf. He was known for making people happy. His optimism lit up a room and he put others’ needs before his own.

 

Bob is survived by his parents, Philip and Pauline Strand, of Hampton; girlfriend, Jordan Kruszka, of Thornton; sister, Rachel and husband, Bill Ries, of Hampton; brother, Keith Johnson Jr., of Hampton; sister, Ramie Strand, of Kathleen, Ga.; brother, Seth Johnson and wife, Rachel, of Hampton; sister, Bethany Strand, of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandmother, Overna (Dick Swanson) Card, of Hampton; aunt, Rita and husband, Phillip Rose, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; aunt, Suzanne and husband, Dave Cook, of Manly; aunt Cynthia and husband, Millard Anderson, of Sheldon; uncle Richard and wife, Nancy Rieken, of Bristow; great-uncle, Rodney and wife, Patty Rieken, of Hansel; great-great-aunt, Elaine and husband, Harry Reysack, of Dumont; many nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

Marian V. Campbell

 

ROCKWELL — Marian V. Campbell, 83, of 213 Mulberry St., Rockwell, died Wednesday evening (May 23, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 S. Second St., Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.

Marian Verna Campbell was born on Dec. 23, 1923, in rural Rockwell, the daughter of Olaf and Bertha F. (Hansen) Petersen. She was the third of six children born to her parents and had resided in the area all her life.

 

Marian was a graduate of Rockwell High School in 1941 and furthered her education at Hamilton Business College. In her earlier years, she worked at the creamery in Rockwell, the Rockwell Nursing Home, along with her sister, Hannah, and at the People’s Gas and Electric Co. (Interstate Power). Most area residents will well-remember Marian’s employment with the U.S. Post Office. She was employed for 15 years as a “floating” postal clerk in Rockwell, Sheffield and Dougherty, retiring on Jan. 31, 1986.

 

On June 15, 1947, Marian was united in marriage with Raymond Arthur Campbell at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell. They became the busy and proud parents of a daughter and three sons.

 

Some of Marian’s memberships and activities included the American Legion Auxiliary-Gallagher Post 208, the Altar Guild and Martha Circle at church and the Quilting Club. She was a volunteer at the Salvation Army in Mason City for numerous years, until approximately one year ago.

 

Marian was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Minnesota Viking basketball and football fan. She also found great joy in quilting and sewing, finding a good bargain at garage sales and spending precious moments with her family and friends. Marian had a wonderful sense of humor and is described as a very generous, caring, supportive and loving woman. She will be dearly missed by all who have shared in her life!

 

Marian is survived by her three sons, Doug and Maureen Campbell, of Fort Wayne, Ind., Brian and Merilee Campbell, of Mason City, and David and Jill Campbell, of Des Moines; her sisters, Hannah and Herald Thompson, of Rockwell, and Marcella and Dale Erickson, of Sun City, Ariz.; and her brother, Jack and JoAnn Petersen, of Rockwell. She will also be a cherished “Grandma” to Brad Schaefer, Becca Schaefer, Jami Campbell, Evan Campbell, Kathryn Campbell David, Erin Campbell, Meghan Campbell, Joseph Campbell, Jacob Campbell, Abby Campbell and Sam Campbell; and her two great-grandchildren, Landon Campbell and Rae JoAnn David.

 

Preceding Marian in death were her husband, Raymond Campbell, on Aug. 28, 1995; her daughter, Linda Schaefer; her parents, Olaf and Bertha Petersen; and her two brothers, Marvin and William “Bill” Petersen.

Fay D. ‘Buzz’ Fessenden


 

MASON CITY — Fay D. “Buzz” Fessenden, 79, formerly of 118 16th St. N.E., Mason City, died early Wednesday morning (May 23, 2007) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City, where he had been a resident since January of 2005.

 

Memorial graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, 1224 S. Washington Ave., Mason City, with Sister Lois Erpelding, OSF, of St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiating. Military respects will be provided by the Mason City Memorial Association and a short presentation will be provided by the Moose Lodge.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends at the cemetery at the time of Fay’s service.

Fay Dexter Fessenden was born June 14, 1927 in Mason City, the son of Maynard Chauncey and Katie Viola (Stanfield) Fessenden. He attended school in Mason City.

 

Fay was inducted into the U.S. Army on Aug. 3, 1945, from Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He was formally and honorably discharged from his military duties among the 20th Infantry as a TEC/5, on Jan. 26, 1947, from Camp Beale, Calif.

 

Upon his return to Mason City, Buzz worked as a parts clerk for numerous years at Floyd and Leonard’s Auto Parts Store. He was later employed as a factory laborer at Fermented Products in Mason City for over 25 years.

 

Fay was united in marriage to Rose Frances (Krivohlavy) Pulliam on Feb. 12, 1959, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. Together, they found great enjoyment in dancing, going for rides, dining out and playing games of chance at various casinos.

 

Some of Buzz’s interests and leisure activities included tending to his yard, socializing with his friends and generally just keeping busy. Buzz was a very proud and patriotic man and a loving husband. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, VFW Post 733 and the Moose Lodge, all in Mason City.

 

Buzz will be dearly missed by his stepdaughter, Mardell Pulliam and David Reckner, of Plymouth; his nephews, Roger and Helen Fessenden, of Arvada, Colo., and Glen W. Fessenden Jr., of Iowa City; his great-niece, Deb and Mike Rickard and their sons, Greg, Tim and Alex, of Mason City; and his great-nephew, Danny and Jamie Fessenden of Arvada, Colo.

 

He is also survived by his 10 stepgrandchildren, Julie Ward (Mark) Wagman, Connie Ward (Mike) Fricke, Jim (Vickie) Ward, Jean Ward (Doug) Wright, Jeff (Susan) Ward, Beth Ward, Michael Pulliam, Yolanda Pulliam, Rose Pulliam and Norma Pulliam.

 

Preceding Buzz in death were his wife, Rose Fessenden, on Jan. 17, 1998; his parents, Maynard and Katie Fessenden; his brother, Glenn Fessenden Sr.; his stepdaughter, Eva Ward; and his stepson, Michael Pulliam.
