Esther S. Pleggenkuhle

SUMNER — Esther Selma Pleggenkuhle, 85, of Sumner, passed away Saturday (March 17, 2007) at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with the Rev. William Runaas Jr. presiding. Burial will be in the Hawkeye Cemetery, Hawkeye, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday.

Esther Selma (Bergmann) Pleggenkuhle, 85, was born on Nov. 14, 1921, in Chickasaw County, Iowa, in the rural Ionia area, and was baptized Dec. 15 of the same year at St. John’s Lutheran Church (Western Douglas). She was the eldest child of Ernest August Frederick Bergmann and Hilda (nee Huebner) Bergmann. She was named Esther Selma in honor of two aunts, a maternal aunt, Esther Huebner who died at age six, and a paternal aunt, Selma Bergmann, who was eight years her senior.

Esther began her education at a rural school in the Ionia area without knowing English. German was spoken in the home. Having attended public school in English for six years, Esther was forced to relearn German once again when enrolled in Konfirmation Schule, which combined religious and academic instruction into one curriculum at the Western Douglas School.

She renewed her baptismal vows at her confirmation on April 14, 1935 at St. John’s. Upon completion of her basic education, Esther began working at various jobs, earning her own living, necissitated by the death of her father in 1936.

On June 3, 1941, she was united in marriage with Ross Otto Pleggenkuhle at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Richfield. To this union three children were born: Lavern Ross in December of 1942, Larry Eugene in March of 1945 and Beverly Jean in May of 1948. Their first home was in the rural Sumner/Fredericksburg area. Next they lived just north of Hawkeye before returning to the Richfield area in 1950. In 1955, they purchased the August Tonges farm southwest of Hawkeye and farmed there until heart surgery forced Ross into semi-retirement in 1982.

Early in their farm life, Esther took part in the daily farm operations, especially caring for the chickens. The egg check was responsible for many basics as well as providing some extra disposable cash. Later she became the “hired man” of the dairy operation so her children could attend college.

Esther loved to read the newspaper, sew, do decoupage, paint, ceramics and tole paint. Her happiest years were probably the years she served as a Weight Watchers lecturer in the 1970s and 1980s. Shortly after the death of her son, Lavern, in Octobert of 1997, Esther and Ross moved from the farm at Hawkeye and relocated in Sumner.

In February of 2005, Esther fell and broke her upper right arm. For a few weeks, Ross attempted care at home, but his advancing heart disease made the Hillcrest Home a necessity for Esther and a few months later, he too, moved to the Hillcrest Home in Sumner. Esther continued to make Hillcrest her home after Ross passed away in June of 2005. Starting in November of 2006, Esther had a series of strokes, each a bit more debilitating than the last. Her death occurred on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
