Lyle Francis Clapsaddle

MASON CITY — Lyle Francis Clapsaddle, 87, of 1428 N. Taft Ave., died Thursday (March 8, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, at the First United Methodist Church WAYside Chapel, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military Rites will be performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to the service at church.

Memorials may be given to the Lyle F. Clapsaddle Memorial Fund.

Lyle was born Feb. 24, 1920, at Orthel Township, Wesley, Iowa, the son of Edgar and Canis (Wilhite) Clapsaddle. He attended country school in Orthel Township III for eight years. Following his schooling, he helped his father on the family farm near Wesley, Iowa.

At the age of 21, just before Pearl Harbor, he was drafted into the Army on Nov. 7, 1941, and served six months basic training at Camp Walters in Texas. Lyle then went to Camp Shelby in Mississippi for eight months and then took a long train ride to San Francisco, Calif., where he boarded a ship to New Zealand for a two-month tour of duty in New Zealand. Lyle then boarded a ship and went to the island of Caledonia and onto the island of New Guinea, the Russell Islands, and from there to the New Georgia combat area. Lyle was then on 15 other islands for two years. His last tour of duty was in the Philippines and then he was sent to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas for his discharge on Sept. 23, 1945, from the 169th Infantry.

Lyle returned home and met the love of his life,   DonaDel Eden from Kanawha, Iowa. Lyle swept her off her feet and they were married on Nov. 30, 1946, and to this union three children were born.

Lyle started his working career as a farmer and switched to a heavy equipment operator and retired from the union in 1985. Lyle spent much of his retirement time gardening, reading, and watching television. Lyle was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

Lyle is survived by three children, Sherry Schmidtke of Eagan, Minn., Gloria Morud and husband, Kurt, of Brownsville, Texas, and William Clapsaddle of Melbourne, Iowa; three grandchildren, Rachelle Mineck, of Ely, Iowa, Travis Morud and wife, Sheri, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Kimberly Berding and husband, Joe, of Nora Springs, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lyle was preceded in death by his wife, Dona; parents, Edgar and Canis Clapsaddle; twin brothers, Lionel and Leroy; sister, Zerlinda Schnath; and brother, Donald.

Ernest Hofmeister

ACKLEY — Ernest Hofmeister, 85, of Ackley, died on Friday (March 9, 2007) at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter’s UCC, rural Geneva, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Monday at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Greg Schneider

MASON CITY— Greg Schneider, 46, of 10 Slate Court S.E., died Friday, (March 9, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 12, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, Mason City, with the Rev. Jon Seda and the Rev. Todd Schneider as concelebrants.

Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. A scriptural wake service will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by a rosary service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or Holy Family Catholic Church in memory of Greg Schneider.

Gregory S. Schneider was born July 5, 1960, in Austin, Minn., the son of Conrad and Bernice (Boldt) Schneider. He graduated from high school in Rochester, Minn. After graduation he attended Rochester VoTech.

Greg married Anne Solberg on May 27, 1983, in Mason City, Iowa. He was employed as a computer systems administrator for Holcim in Mason City. Greg was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bow hunting, scuba diving, biking and spending time with all of his family, especially his children, Sarah and Matt and wife, Anne. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Greg is survived his wife, Anne (Solberg) Schneider, of Mason City; children, Sarah and Matthew Schneider, of Mason City; parents; Conrad and Bernice Schneider, of Palisade, Minn.; brother, Jim Schneider and wife, Melanie, of Clear Lake; sister, Carla Groebner and husband, Jim, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; brother, Larry Schneider and wife, Jenny, of Pella, Iowa; parents-in-law, Peggy and Vaughn Solberg, of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Mary Isom and husband, Bob, of Vail, Colo., Jane Tatone and husband, Tony, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kris Solberg and significant other, Justin McVey, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Rita and husband, Dr. Brian Manwiller, of Davenport, Iowa; nieces, Anna and Ashley Groebner, Megan Schneider, Maggie Tatone, and Nicole Manwiller; nephews, Josh and Justin Schneider, Luke and Daniel Schneider, Alex Tatone and Luke Manwiller.

LaVerne ‘Ed’ Scheffel

MASON CITY — LaVerne “Ed” Scheffel, 77 of 22 Winnebago Court, died Friday (March 9, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Tom Healey, chaplain, Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the LaVerne Scheffel Memorial Fund.

Ed was born March 19, 1929, in Nora Springs, Iowa, the son of Les and Velma (Scheffel) Barker. Shortly after graduation from Nora Springs High School, Ed started working at Northwestern States Portland Cement Co.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict. After returning from the service, he continued a 39½-year career at Northwestern States Portland Cement Co., retiring in 1986.

Ed was united in marriage to Dorothy Best at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on May 23, 1953. To this union one daughter was born. Ed was a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather. Ed was also an avid Hawkeye, Viking and NASCAR fan. He enjoyed playing cards, bingo, going out to eat, going to stock car races, watching his granddaughter’s dog, Cuddles, and most of all watching his granddaughter play basketball and softball for the Mason City Mohawks.

Ed is survived by one daughter, Lori Beatty and husband, Kent, of Mason City; one granddaughter, Whitney Beatty, of Mason City; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Mary Best of Rockwell; one sister-in-law, Jo Ann Best, of Clear Lake; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy; his parents; one brother-in-law, Roger Best; one sister-in-law, Velma Dawson; and one nephew, Dale Best.

NORTHWOOD — Margaret B. Van Veldhuizen, 90, of Northwood, died Friday (March 9, 2007) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Stephen Jack Fisher

JANESVILLE — Stephen Jack Fisher, 52, of Janesville, Iowa, died in a snowmobile accident on Friday (March 9, 2007) near Cable, Wis.

He was born Dec. 28, 1954, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Bud and Renée Fisher. Steve married Judy McGarvey on Sept. 25, 1982, in Eagle Center, Iowa. He was a 1973 graduate of Mason City High School and earned his degree in electronics engineering from Hawkeye Institute of Technology in 1975.

Steve was vice president of Team Technologies in Cedar Falls for many years and more recently started Fishsticks Millwork, fulfilling a lifelong dream of working with wood. He was also an accomplished musician.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, of Janesville; five children, Ben (Beth Oeltjenbruns), of Janesville, and David, Keir, Hayley and Olivia, all at home; his mom, Renée Kee, of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Pam Fisher (Diana Gambaiani) and Kathy (Tom) Ludwig, both of Dysart, Iowa; a brother, Tom (Gayle) Fisher, of Rush City, Minn.; his mother and father-in-law, Jim and Shirley McGarvey, of Buckingham, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pat and Cathy McGarvey of Mount Auburn, Iowa, Mary Lou and Scott Drnovsek of Thornton, Colo., Jeannie Waite of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ed and Sara McGarvey of Buckingham, Jackie McGarvey of Dallas, Texas and Carol and Don Faulkner of Olathe, Kan.; his niece and nephew, Kaitlyn and Austin Ludwig, as well as 15 other nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his dad, Bud Fisher, in 1979; stepfather, Bill Kee, in 1994; and his grandparents, Emery and Helen Fatland and Harry and Ellen Fisher.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 12, at Heartland Vineyard Church in Cedar Falls.

Chris Horstman

SHEFFIELD — Chris Horstman, age 94, of Sheffield, died Thursday (March 8, 2007) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the Retz Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield with the Rev. Kent A. Mechler presiding. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, rural Sheffield.

Christian Henry Horstman was born June 10, 1912, the son of Frederick and Anna (Sieveking) Horstman on the family farm. He was baptized July 7, 1912, and confirmed Sept. 6, 1925, at St. John Lutheran Church and educated in country schools.

Chris farmed with his family and eventually took over the family farm. He was well liked and respected in the neighborhood and his relatives and neighbors were special to him. Christian lived on the farm until just a couple of years ago.

Chris is survived by one nephew, Luverne (Beatrice) Becker, of Sheffield and close friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Wayne W. Greiman


GOODELL — Wayne W. Greiman, 84, of Goodell, died Saturday (March 10, 2007) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Wayne Warren Greiman, the son of Fred H. and Caroline (Wille) Greiman, was born on Oct. 22, 1922, on a farm south of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Reformed Church. He attended the rural schools of Ell Township and graduated from Garner High School in 1940. After high school, he farmed the family farm with his brother, Burtis.


On Oct. 31, 1946, he married Vivian Harberts at the Peace Reformed Church parsonage. They lived on the family farm south of Garner where they raised their children. In 1971, they moved to their present home in Goodell.


Wayne enjoyed raising and showing livestock, especially his horses. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and supporting them in all of their school activities.


He was a member of Peace Reformed Church where he had served as Sunday school superintendent. He belonged to the Iowa Shorthorn Association, American Quarter Horse Association, Belgian Draft Horse Association, Garner Saddle Club and served on the board of the Garner Shipping Association.


Wayne is survived by his wife of sixty years, Vivian, of Goodell; four children, Connie (Mark) Hill of Clarion, Carole (Ken) Busick of Mason City, Fred (Gena) Greiman of Garner and Denise (Jeff) Eilertson of Garner; nine grandchildren, Megan Hill, Dale Busick, Andrea (Todd) Young, Brook (Charles) Stokes, Gail (Jeremy) Gouge, Jamie (Nick) Christiansen, Luke Greiman, Nick Eilertson and Carrie Eilertson; eight great-grandchildren, Kaden and Karlee Young, Clara and Street Stokes, Brock and Gretta Gouge and Cooper and Cora Christiansen; a brother, Kenneth (Evelyn) Greiman, of Garner; and three nephews and their families.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Burtis; an infant son; son, Dennis; and grandson, Chad Hill.

Doris S. Blakesley


MASON CITY — Doris S. Blakesley, 88, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (March 3, 2007) at the Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz.


Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday (March 14, 2007) at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Interment will be in Manly Cemetery, Manly, Iowa.


Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church.


Doris S. Blakesley was born on Feb. 27, 1919, in Mason City, to Clell D. and Ara (Rath) Squier. She grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School.


After graduation, she was employed by Northwestern Bell as a switchboard supervisor.


Doris married Forrest Del (Raymond) Blakesley on Oct. 21, 1945, at the Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church in Mason City. Doris and Ray owned and operated the G.I. Cab Line.


Doris was a lifelong member of the Grace Evangelical United Brethren United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. Doris was actively involved in church teaching Sunday School and held offices in the U.M.W.


Doris was also a Girl Scout unit and troop leader while her daughters were growing up and served several years as president of the Grant School P.T.A.


She spent many years as an insurance secretary for Tola Blowers and Hoyt Carrier and retired as an invoice clerk from Midwest Wholesale in 1984. Later in life she made many friends by opening her home to students who were doing their internship at Mercy Hospital. In 2000, Doris relocated to Tucson, Ariz.


Doris enjoyed singing, playing piano, reading, gardening, raising flowers, entertaining, and spending time with her grandchildren. She also appreciated the grace and delicate beauty of swans.


She was proud to be a cousin and good friend of the late Meredith and Rini Willson. She also treasured her friendship with Rosemary Willson. Doris will be remembered for her kind heart, her sweet and gentle spirit, and how she cherished her family.


Doris is survived by her daughters, Dodie Long and husband, Terry, of Tucson, Ariz., Dana Oswalt and husband, Bjorn, of Littleton, Colo., Patricia Tibbits and husband, Robbie, of Osage, Iowa, and Raedel Schrage and husband, Dennis, of Tucson, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Janice Ann Sharp was born on May 31, 1946, in Mason City, the daughter of LaVern and Lee (Jackson) Kollman. She graduated in 1964 from North Central High School in Manly, Iowa.


She was united in marriage on Nov. 27, 1971, to Leon Ray Sharp at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City. Janice had worked in the banking business since 1965. She was currently employed at Community National Bank, where she had been since March 1988, where she enjoyed her co-workers and friends.


Janice loved reading, gardening, and going to antique shows. Her favorite enjoyment was friends and family, and her dog, Heidi.


Janice is survived by her husband, Leon, of Mason City; two step-daughters, Dawn Merrick, and husband Jim, of Mason City, Lisa Pattschull, and husband, Ted, of Mason City; two step-grandchildren, Parker Pattschull, of Mason City, and Meagan Merrick, of Mason City; two brothers, John Kollman, and friend, Shelly, of Burt, Iowa, and Mark Kollman, and friend, Trisha, of Osage, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Margaret Bernice Van Veldhuizen


NORTHWOOD — Margaret Bernice Van Veldhuizen, age 90, of Northwood, Iowa, died Friday (March 9, 2007) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa.


Funeral services for Margaret will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Solid Rock Assembly of God Church in Worthington, Minn., with Pastor Scott Peterson officiating. Interment will take place at the Memorial Gardens in Worthington, Minn.

Margaret was born on March 20, 1916, to Lambertus and Gertrude (DeYoung) Ver Steeg in Murray County, Minn.


As a young lady, she worked in homes of mothers with newborn babies. On Dec. 7, 1937, Margaret married Ben Van Veldhuizen at her parents’ farm near Hull, Iowa. After their marriage they farmed at Sanborn, Iowa, for two years, at Paullina, Iowa, for 15 years, lived in Orange City, Iowa, for seven years and farmed at Raymond, Minn., for 15 years.


When they retired, they lived in Primghar, Iowa, for two years and then moved to Worthington, Minn., where they lived for 15 years.


Ben passed away in l984. Margaret moved to Maple Court in Northwood, Iowa, nine years ago.


Bible reading and church were the mission of their lives. Margaret taught Sunday school many years.


Ben and Margaret raised ten children, an acomplishment of which she was very proud.


Survivors include four sons, Bernon and his wife, Jean, of Northwood, Iowa, Argene and his wife, Alvina, of Roseville, Minn., Erwin and his wife, Marcine, of Dickinson, N.D., and David and his wife, JoAnn, of St. Cloud, Minn.; six daughters, Mardrana and her husband, Wayne, Bruinsma of Sioux Center, Iowa, Dwenda and her husband, Eugene, Gjerdingen of Roseville, Minn., Loann and her husband, Bruce, Oyen of Miles City, Mont., Yvonne and her husband, David, Witt of Lakeville, Minn., Lenora and her husband, Gary, Fredman of Pillager, Minn., and Lorna Van Veldhuizen of Gretna, Neb.; 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Viola DeGroot and Burdella DeJger, both of Luverne, Minn.


Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; two grandchildren, Debra Kay Bruinsma and Melanie Jan Van Veldhuizen; her parents, Lambertus and Gertrude; four brothers, Ronald, Vernon, Norman and Evan Earl in infancy; one sister, Elnora DeWild.

MASON CITY — Mildred J. Platts, 81, of 644 S. Louisiana Ave. in Mason City, died Saturday afternoon (March 10, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Mildred Jane Platts, lovingly known as “Millie” to many of her relatives and friends, was born on Feb, 14, 1926, in Morgan, Minn., the sixth of seven children born to her parents, Robert Bruce and Katherine Ann (Larsen) Paskin. At the tender age of two, Millie’s mother died and she continued to be lovingly cared for by her father and Aunt Jane and Uncle Will.


Millie attended rural country school and graduated from Renwick High School. Upon graduation, she moved to Mason City and was employed at Mercy Hospital in the records department. Later, she worked at Good Shepherd Health Center as a nursing assistant for 17 years.


Millie met her future husband, William James Platts, at a dance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. They were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on Feb. 22, 1948. Millie and William became the proud and busy parents of three daughters and two sons.


Some of Millie’s favorite hobbies and leisure activities included writing poetry and letters, tending to small pets, collecting porcelain dolls and horse and pig figurines, sharing coffee and conversation with her neighbor gals, and attending reunions. Throughout her life, she was fond of all animals, especially horses.


Millie was a talented artist, creating numerous drawings and paintings. She was fascinated by anything “Shirley Temple” and it always seemed that “something exciting was happening” at her home!


Millie’s greatest joy and devotion was to her family and her home. Her children recall that their mother was a very compassionate and caring woman who delighted them with delicious home-cooked meals and baked goods, especially her fresh cinnamon rolls and pies, the best-ever apple pies!


Millie resided most of her life in Mason City, where she was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and a former member of the Home Builder’s Auxiliary.


Millie will be deeply missed by her children, Rebecca and David Arvizu of Des Moines, Kathleen and Monte Kallas of Mason City, Bob and Sue Platts of Mason City, Michele and Jon Oswood of Cedar Rapids and her daughter-in-law, Karen Platts of Mason City; her brother, Frank Paskin of Gridley, Kan.; and her 12 grandchildren, Jamie and Julianne Arvizu, Joel and Jennifer Arvizu, Jonathan Arvizu, G.W. Justin and Jessica Platts, Abby and Chad Weydert, Tom Platts, Erin and Adam Rohwer, Ryan Platts, Reid Platts, Tyler Oswood, Kaitlin Oswood and Carter Oswood. She will also be dearly cherished by her five great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.


Preceding Millie in death are her husband, William J. Platts, in July of 1994; her son, William Craig “Bill” Platts, in October of 2004; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, George and Gertrude Platts; her two sisters, Katherine Esmay and Eileen Cameron; and her three brothers, Tom, Bob and Ben Paskin.

Ralph F. McCartney

CHARLES CITY — Ralph F. McCartney, 82, of 1828 Cedarview Drive, Charles City, died Saturday (March 10, 2007) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, (March 14, 2007) at First Congregational Church, 502 N. Jackson St., in Charles City, with the Rev. Phil Corr officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Military honors will be accorded by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Immediately following the interment, a reception will take place at the church.

 The family will greet friends and relatives from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue on Wednesday at the church, one hour prior to Ralph’s service.

Ralph Farnham McCartney was born on Dec. 11, 1924, in Charles City, the son of Ralph C. and Helen (Farnham) McCartney. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1942 and from 1943 to 1945 served in the U.S. Army, 89th Division, during World War II. After attending Iowa State University and Cornell University, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law school, J.D., 1960. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity there.

He was united in marriage to Rhoda Mae Huxsol on June 25, 1950, in Charles City. Following two years as a member of the law firm Heuber and Miller in Des Moines, he and Rhoda returned to Charles City where, in 1952, he co-founded the Frye and McCartney law firm with partner Jack Frye, a position he held for 26 years.

He represented Floyd County in the Iowa House of Representatives during the 62nd and 63rd General Assemblies (1967-1970) and served as House Majority Leader during his second term. Following one term as a member of the Iowa State Board of Regents (1970-1972), he represented the seventh district in the Iowa State Senate during the 65th General Assembly (1973-1974). In December 1978, Gov. Robert Ray appointed him as District Court Judge and from 1987 to 1992, he served as chief judge for the Second Judicial District of Iowa. He was named senior judge for the State Court of Appeals in 1992.

Ralph F. McCartney was a member of the Iowa Judges Association, the Twelfth Judicial District Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Judicature Society and the Iowa State Bar Association. He served on the Judicial Coordinating Committee of the Iowa Supreme Court and chaired the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Administration of Clerks.

In 1995 he received the prestigious Award of Merit from the Iowa Judges Association.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church, where he served on its building committee and chaired the Prudential Board. He was also a member of St. Charles Masonic Lodge No. 141 and Consistory, the Floyd County Historical Society, Charles City Art Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, B.P.O.E. and the American Legion. He served on the board of directors of the Lincoln Club, United Fund, Salvation Army and the Charles City YMCA. He was past president of the Lions Club, and a member of the Charles City Savings and Loan Association. 

In 1971, he served as Honorary Colonel for the inauguration of Gov. Robert Ray, chaired the Republican State Convention the following year and was the Iowa director for President Gerald Ford’s election campaign in 1976.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rhoda; two sons, Ralph (Lise) McCartney of Washington, D.C., David McCartney and his partner, (James Petersen) of Iowa City; a daughter, Julia (Leonard) Deutchman of Philadelphia, Pa., and one granddaughter, Sarah Deutchman of Scranton, Pa.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; Ralph C. and Helen (Farnham) McCartney.

Junior Ray Culver was born on Feb. 15, 1923, in Sheffield, Iowa, a son of Arthur O. and Elizabeth (Knapp) Culver at the family home. He was raised in the Evangelical United Brethren Church and educated at Sheffield schools. He went to work at Sheffield Brick and Tile.


On Sept. 19, 1943, Junior was united in marriage with Darlene Mae Hansen at her parents’ home west of Rockwell. They made their home in Sheffield and adopted a daughter, Katherine.


Junior enjoyed his garden with the pear and apple trees. He collected coins and was an avid Hawkeye fan. Many will remember him for driving around town in his golf cart. He cherished his grandchildren and the time he could spend with them.


Survivors include his daughter, Katherine (Larry) Scott, Nora Springs; grandchildren: Jamie (Jamie) Meek and their children: Ripley, Kiara and Paxtyn; and Heather Scott of Sheffield; sisters and brother: Ardis Meyer, St. Peter, Minn.; Eileen (Jerry) Lutcavish, Bernadine (Carl) Hulsing and Harold (Billie) Culver all of Sheffield; and nieces and nephews.

Angeline “Angie” Evon Sheka was born on Oct. 12, 1922, in rural Carpenter, Iowa, the daughter of Prosper and Selma (DeVrient) Toye. She received her education in the rural Mitchell County and Carpenter schools. Angie spent one year in Belgium as a child when her parents moved back there.


She was united in marriage to Glenn Sheka on April 22, 1941, in Stacyville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 2005.


After their marriage, they farmed on the family farm for over 50 years.


Angie enjoyed gardening, canning, being outside, visiting and cooking for family and friends, but her great love and enjoyment was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and being a care- giver to her husband.


She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, and St. Michael’s Ladies Catholic Guild in Plymouth.


Left to cherish her memory are her children: Rose Marie (Mike) Fritz of Mason City, Claudia (Wesley) Combs of Montrose, S.D., Jean (Dennis) Fitzl of Plymouth, Jane (Edward) Ohden of Grafton, and Glenn Sheka Jr. of Grafton; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Holmquist, of Marion, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Joan Toye of Osage, and Alda Toye of Rock Island, Ill.; several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dennis made his home in Floyd, Iowa, before moving to Council Bluffs 23 years ago. He was an airman/welder for Railcar Nebraska/Gunderson for the past 23 years.


Dennis was a member of the Eagles Club and loved bicycling, especially in RAGBRAI and golfing.


He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Summer. Florine Riehm

GARNER — Florine Riehm, 88, of Garner, died Monday (March 5, 2007) at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Danville, Ill.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.


Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Mary Florine Riehm, daughter of Fred and Charlotte (Day) McDermott, was born on Oct. 4, 1918. She graduated from Moville High School at the age of 16. She attended a business school for one year in Sioux City before entering the University of Iowa. She graduated in 1940 with a degree in business administration.


After college she worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville, Tenn., the Glen L. Martin Co. and at the Sioux City Air Base during World War II.


On Feb. 23, 1943, she married Curtis G. Riehm, her college sweetheart, in Omaha, Neb. After his four years in the Army, they located in Garner, where Florine helped Curtis open his law office. Curtis practiced law for over 50 years.


For over 35 years Florine and Curtis spent summers at their home on Clear Lake, enjoying boating and water activities with their family and friends. They also enjoyed traveling. Summer vacations with the children were spent driving across the United States to visit national parks. Later they traveled the world with friends, including the first Pan Am tour to China. She sold her home in Garner last summer to move to a retirement apartment near her daughter, Carol, and then suffered a stroke in August.


Florine was very active in the Garner Methodist Church, serving as the treasurer for many years, as well as a member of the United Methodist Women. She was honored a few years ago for her 50 years as a member of PEO. She was one of the long-time members of Recital Club.


Other groups that she was active in include Eastern Star, North Iowa Council of the Girl Scouts of America, the American Legion Auxiliary, Rotary Wives and the Republican Party.


When her children were young, she served as a Girl Scout leader and a Boy Scout den leader. Later she was active in three bridge groups. She also enjoyed music, knitting and needlepoint.


Florine is survived by her three children, Beverly Riehm and her husband, Randall Borcherding, of San Francisco, Calif., Charles Riehm and his wife, Sarah, of Richardson, Texas, and Carol Bertilson and her husband, Dennis, of Fithian, Ill.; six grandchildren, Brayden Borcherding, Andrew, Amanda and Jennifer Riehm and Melanie Kording (Scott) and Amy Bertilson; a sister, Arlene Gulliver and her husband, Arthur, of Ralston, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis, and her parents.

CEDAR RAPIDS — James W. “Jim” Burrell, 74, of 1804 Eighth Ave. S.E., died Friday (March 9, 2007) at his home following a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Mary Edgar; and his parents, Overton and Chrystal Burrell.


Jim was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Mason City, to Overton and Chrystal Burrell. He married Beverly Coty on July 3, 1960, in Mason City. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict as an EN3 aboard the USS Big Black River (LSMR). He was employed by Varner Printing in Cedar Rapids for many years as a printer until the owner retired and then was employed by CRYOVAC as a side seal operator until May 2000 when he retired. He was a member of the Hawkeye Area Labor Council. Jim was active in the Democratic Party, acting as sergeant at arms at various functions.


Jim was especially proud of his family and enjoyed following their activities. He had a very big heart and went out of his way to help people.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to Mercy Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Association, Milestones, or to the American Cancer Society.

Ruth Anna Hackbarth


ST. ANSGAR — Ruth Anna (Williams) Hackbarth, 91, of St. Ansgar, died Sunday (March 11, 2007) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.


Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick officiating. Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Ruth was born Aug. 7, 1915, at Little Cedar, Iowa, daughter of Jennie and Anton Williams. She was baptized Sept. 18, 1915, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Osage, and confirmed on Feb. 19, 1939, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Ruth attended the Little Cedar School until the eighth grade, when her family moved to St. Ansgar. After graduation from high school she worked as a telephone operator.


She married Harland “Pete” Hackbarth on Oct. 26, 1940, at Kirksville, Mo. They lived in Los Angeles, Calif. until 1946, when they moved back to St. Ansgar. She again was a telephone operator until becoming a bookkeeper for the St. Ansgar State Bank, from which she retired.


She was active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church as a Sunday school secretary and treasurer almost 50 years. She enjoyed her family, especially her great-grandchildren, and enjoyed working in her flower garden. Ruth and Peter were known for remembering shut-ins and friends with cards, visits and gifts of “goodies.”


Ruth is survived by her husband, Harland “Pete;” and children, Jannelle Francis and Camille Jeffers (Richard); grandchildren, Jennifer Kisley (John), Jeffrey Francis (Shawna), Michelle McDermott (Andy), and Brian Jeffers; great-grandchildren, Andrea, Morgan, Steven, Jaden, Jessica, Jordan and Joshua; many nieces and nephews.


Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, Clifford (infant) Paul and Henry; sister, Ala Milton, Irene Bublitz; stepbrothers, Morris and Arthur Williams; stepsister, Laura Klemesrud.

Orville K. Sill


THOMPSON — Orville K. Sill, 85 of Ottumwa, formerly of Thompson, died Sunday (March 11, 2007) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Orville K. Sill was born on a farm north of Thompson, on June 17, 1921, the son of Paul and Ella (Johnson ) Sill. He received his education in country schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Thompson High School.


Orville served for five years in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He ended his military career as a nose gunner on heavy Liberator bombers in the European Theater.


Following his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to the Thompson area. On May 14, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Becker.


Orville worked as a bookkeeper for People’s State Bank in Thompson for 13 years. He worked with the county assessor and was elected to serve as Winnebago County Supervisor. For many years he owned and operated a feed store in Thompson and drove school bus for the Thompson School District.


At the age of 62 years, Orville retired and he and Lorraine moved to the Des Moines area, spending the winters in Arizona.


He loved to play golf and go fishing. He liked sports and enjoyed cheering his grandchildren on in their athletic endeavors. Orville was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson and held memberships in the DAV, the VFW and the American Legion.


Orville is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine Sill of Ottumwa; and three children, Terry (Sandra) Sill of Mount Vernon, Iowa, Jane (Ervin) Burke of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Mark (Lisa) Sill of Ramsey, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren, Erik, John, Anna, Kevin, Cassidy, Jill, Jenna, Jodi, Todd, Sarah and Hanah. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother, Ellen Sorenson of Woden, Floyd Sill of Wabasha, Minn., and Winifred Larson of the country of Panama.

Evelyn Ruth Long was born Dec. 3, 1911, near Burchinal, the daughter of George and Laura (Millard) Long. She attended Lake No. 5 country school and Clear Lake High School. Evelyn was united in marriage to Carl Dyer on Jan. 6, 1930. They farmed in Cerro Gordo and Floyd counties. Evelyn and Carl moved into Nora Springs in 1974, where she worked for many years at the laundromat.


Evelyn was an avid bowler and basketball fan; she especially enjoyed watching the Chicago Bulls and later the L.A. Lakers. She loved gardening, fishing, cooking, baking and storytelling. Evelyn was a collector of teddy bears. She was very supportive of the Christian Church, Nora Springs. She was a member of the Iowa Bowlers Hall of Fame, bowling until she was 84 years old.


Evelyn is survived by her sister, Arlene Higgins, of Mason City; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, other relatives, friends, and her care providers at the Nora Springs Care Center.


She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl on Feb. 16, 1987; brother, Lawrence Long; four sisters, Ethel Ransom, LaVerna Hollenbeck, Lucille Schriver, and Dorothy Myers.

Marvin Westrem


ST. ANSGAR — Marvin Westrem, 86, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (March 13, 2007) at St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Marvin George John Westrem was born on Dec. 19, 1920, at the family home in Union Township. He was the son of Earl and Mabel (Schulze) Westrem. He was baptized on June 30, 1921, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Toeterville by the Rev. Lehman. Marvin reaffirmed his faith through confirmation in March 1934.


In 1922 the family moved to a farm near Rose Creek, Minn. Marvin attended public schools in Nevada Township. The family moved to northern Iowa in 1933 where they farmed until 1938 when they moved to Toeterville.


Marvin worked two years at Hormel’s in Austin, Minn., and nine years at the REA in St. Ansgar. Marvin was inducted into the U.S. Army in September 1945 and served in the field artillery signal corps until his honorary discharge at Fort Knox, Ky., on Dec. 5, 1946.


Marvin was united in marriage to Gladys Priem on June 28, 1947. Their marriage was blessed with three sons, David, John and Lester.


Marvin managed his own electrical business in St. Ansgar for 17 years. He was also employed by the St. Ansgar Community Schools and retired in 1986 from Culver-Hahn Electric Supply in Mason City.


Marvin was a lifelong member of Walter T. Enneberg Post No. 358. He was past commander, adjutant, and county adjutant. Marvin was a fireman from 1958-1984.


Marvin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a member of the voters’ assembly, served as an elder, trustee and usher. He was a member of the Lutheran Layman’s League and past president of AAL Branch No. 570. He also served as church custodian for 23 years.


Marvin enjoyed coaching and sponsoring men’s and women’s softball teams over the past 30 years.


He was preceded in death by his parents, and mother and father-in-law.


Marvin is survived by his wife, Gladys; children, David (Joanne), John (Joyce) and Lester (Paula); grandchildren Jeremy (fiancee, Amber), Amanda (Jay) Melcher, and Allison; stepgrandchildren, Matt (Erin) Pohlman, Nick (Samantha) Pohlman, and Christina Cunningham (fiance, James Dreier) and Nathen Cunningham; and four stepgreat-grandsons.

Doris Marie Patterson was born July 10, 1930, in Rockwell, Iowa, daughter of George and Barbara (Kobliska) Scholl. She grew up in Rockwell, graduating from Rockwell High School. Doris then attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City and worked as a legal assistant there prior to her marriage.


On Dec. 29, 1959, Doris was united in marriage to Vernon Dale Patterson. They farmed during their entire married life north of Lakota. Following Dale’s death on Oct. 10, 2000, Doris remained active overseeing the operations of the family farm.


Doris enjoyed gardening and traveling, especially to see her six grandchildren. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard.


She is survived by three children, Steve Patterson and his wife, Kellie, of Flanders, N.J., Tom Patterson and his wife, Laura, of Dallas, Texas, and Karen Lux and her husband, Scott, of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren, Megan and Claire Patterson of Flanders, N.J., Sydney and Tommy Patterson of Dallas, Texas, and Katie and Tyler Lux of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Barbara Thuel and her husband, Ray, of Middletown, N.J., and Leona Bonner and her husband, John, of Swaledale; one brother, Harold Scholl and his wife, Loretta, of Covington, Ky.; and many nieces and nephews.

Michael S. Sill


GREEN, Ohio — Michael S. Sill was tragically taken away on March 11, 2007. The brightest light that has ever shone was put out.


Born in Wynona, Minn. on Feb. 9, 1944, he grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa, and raised his family in Ohio. Mike retired from Eli Lilly after 34 years and was employed as a pharmacist at Rite Aid at the time of his death. Michael loved golfing, traveling, spending time with friends and family and watching his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes.


He is survived by his “beautiful bride” and soul mate, Shelbie; five children; four grandchildren; and many that loved him. Mike’s sons include Marine Lt. Col. Christopher Sill (wife Kelly and grandchildren Dustin and Ryley), Brian Sill (wife Laura and grandchildren Tyler and Justin), and Scott Sill (wife Karin), and daughters Lisa and Cindy.


Friends will be welcome to celebrate his life from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, March 16, at the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police), 2610 Ley Drive, Akron, OH 44139.

Maxine Harris


Nov. 25, 1936 to March 12, 2007


Maxine Harris, 70, of Ames and formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday (March 12, 2007) at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.


Her body has been cremated and a memorial sevice will be held 1 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone. Private burial of her cremains will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.


Maxine was born in Clear Lake on Nov. 25, 1936, the daughter of Kennith and Marjory (Neal) Nyhus. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1954 and graduated from LaJames School of Cosmetology in Mason City.


On Sept. 25, 1955, Maxine married Richard “Dick” Harris in Clear Lake. She and Dick lived in the Ogden area since 1960, and have lived in Ames since 1999. For 23 years, Maxine was a machine operator at 3M in Ames, retiring in 1996.


Maxine was preceded in death by her parents.


She is survived by her husband, Dick, of Ames; a son, Bradley Harris, of Boone; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Tom Golding, of Adelaide, Australia; a sister, Mary Ellen Lorenz, of East Moline, Ill.; a brother, Allan Nyhus, of Cedar Falls; and several nieces and nephews.


Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of services Monday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel.

Leslie Holstad



MASON CITY — Leslie Holstad, 77, died Sunday (Feb. 11, 2007) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.


Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be in Elk Creek Cemetery.


Leslie was born March 10, 1929, the son of Carl and Myrtle (Gjere) Holstad of rural Manly. He graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1947. He was active in sports in high school playing basketball and baseball. He enjoyed being with family and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Arlene; two brothers, Marvin and Maynard; one sister-in-law, Barbara Holstad; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Hansen and Malcolm Hansen.


Surviving family members include Gilma (Roger) Lenz, of Riceville; Ethel (Noble Nerhelm) Hansen, of Claremont, Calif.; Marlene Hansen, of St. Paul, Minn.; Irwin (Dixie) Holstad, of Chandler, Ariz.; Duane (Sharon) Holstad, of Kensett; Vernon (Nancy) Holstad, of Knoxville, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews.

William A. ‘Bill’ Edington


TALIHINA, Okla. — Mr. William A. “Bill” Edington, 62, of Talihina, Okla., passed away Wednesday (March 7, 2007) at Fort Smith, Ark.


Mr. Edington was born in Danbury, Conn., on July 26, 1944, the son of the late Carl William and Mary (Barry) Edington.


He was a member of St. Catherine’s of Siena Catholic Church, National Transient Lodge of Boilermakers, Girl Scout Adults and the Catholic Workman Lodge.


He grew up in Venezuela. At the age of 10 moved to Florida and continued his education through high school in Largo-Clearwater Florida. He worked in Central and South America. He worked as a boilermaker since 1966. He worked from Brownsville, Texas, to Bismark, N.D., and many points in between. The last five years he helped repair nuclear power plant outages in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. He retired in 2003.


He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, family outings and the outdoors. He loved doting on his daughter.


He was the husband of Darlene (Malek) Edington. They were married Feb. 23, 1974, at St. Wenceslaus Church at Duncan.


He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of the home; one daughter, Amanda F.A. Edington, of the home; two cousins; Margaret Mary Murphy of Sheldon, Conn., and Francis John Costello of Connecticut.; father-in-law, Ernest Malek of Britt; sisters-in-law, Diane Hansen of Kanawha and Beverly Roberts, of Cary, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Duane Malek of Duncan, Ed Malek of Knoxville, Gary Malek and Marv Malek of Garner; numerous nieces, nephews, Boilermaker brothers, and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister, three infant brothers and one nephew.


Rosary was held at 7 p.m. March 9, at St. Catherine’s of Siena.


A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at St. Catherine’s of Siena, Talihina, Okla., with Father Richard Christler officiating.


Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, in St. Wenceslaus Church in Duncan with Father Henry Huber officiating. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Duncan.

MESERVEY — Fredrick H. Weide, 82, of Meservey, died Wednesday (March 14, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.


A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be at the Belmond Cemetery, Belmond. Military rites will provided by the Belmond Honor Guard.
