Roy Lee Stansbery

 

Roy Lee Stansbery, 81, formerly of Ionia, died Thursday (March 1, 2007) at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

 

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with Pastor Karl Schiltz and Pastor Richard Fredine officiating. Eulogist for the service will be Don Gillquist. Nelda Shepard will be the organist accompanying Janice Edson as vocalist.

 

Burial with military honors will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

 

Casketbearers will be Rich Crooks, Doug Gillquist, Bob Schluter, Grant Anderson, Jeff Edson and Lawrnie Seamans. Honorary casketbearers will be Carl Crooks, Paul Anderson and Bob Manges.

Roy was born on Feb. 8, 1926, in Quincy, Ill., the son of C. Lee and Dorothy M. (Crooks) Stansbery. He attended country school in Adams County, Ill. and later in Chickasaw County. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1944. Roy served four years in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. He was baptized and was a member of the former Nashua Bible Church.

 

On June 13, 1953, he was united in marriage to June Maxine Schwartz at the First Baptist Church in Mason City. To this union three children were born.

 

Roy was employed for 26 years at Salsbury Labs in Charles City, three years at the John Deere Implement in Charles City, and 16 years with the U.S. Post Office in Ionia. He retired as postmaster.

 

Roy always enjoyed being in the country. He loved farming and the farm he lived on from 1960-2007. Roy had a great appreciation for rare coins, antique pocket watches and tractors. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and attending auctions throughout the mid-west. His longtime goal of traveling to and seeing Alaska was accomplished in July 2005, with family and friends.

 

If so desired, the family requests memorials to either the American Cancer Society, Research Division or the Crooks Family Scholarship Fund.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Lois S. Bresaw of Silverdale, Wash.; Kay (Gerry) Howard, of Olathe, Kan; one son, Wayne (Deanne) Stansbery of Zearing; five grandchildren, Joshua A. (Andrea) Lubkeman, Nathan S. (Emily) Lubkeman, Andrew T. Howard, Wyatt L. Stansbery and Olivia R. Stansbery, and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby (Albert) Schluter, of Cresco, and one brother, A. Ray (Shirley) Stansbery, of Mesa, Ariz.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his former wife, June M. Bradley; and his great-grandson, Garric Adim Lubkeman.



Agnes L. McCarthy

 

BANCROFT — Agnes L. McCarthy, 92, of Bancroft, died Sunday (March 4, 2007) at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

 

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft, with Father Paul D. Bormann officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Bancroft, with a rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m.

Florence H. Peterson

 

MASON CITY — Florence H. Peterson, 92, of Mason City, died Sunday (March 4, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Steve Hansen, Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service.

 

Memorials may be given to the Florence H. Peterson Memorial Fund.

 

Florence was born on Dec.17, 1914 in Sheffield, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Esther (Leider) Crook. She graduated from Sheffield High School in 1932. Florence married A.M. “Pete” Peterson on Dec. 19, 1938, in Mason City. She enjoyed watching Hawkeye basketball, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, attending her grandchildren’s baseball and softball games, Jim’s puppy “Pepper”, going to Chicago, and selling Avon. She loved the holidays and her family. She was a member and past president of the VFW and was also the past president for Avon. She also belonged to the Grace United Methodist Church.

 

Florence is survived by her children: Sharon Norris, of Chicago, Ill., Marcia Christensen and husband, Dennis, of Manly, Jim Peterson and his wife, Cindy, of Rudd, and Nancy Easley and her husband, Ray, of Marion; 12 grandchildren: Sue Norris, Davey Norris, Jason Norris and his wife, Lisa, Andy Christensen and his wife, Tammy, Jami Peterson, Jake Peterson and his wife, Dana, Leah Peterson, Melinda Easley, Jonathan Easley, Liz Wood and her husband, Bob, Darcy Madden, and Michael Raab and his wife, Kelly; 11 great-grandchildren: Nicole, Grace, Kaylee, Sheyanne, Breyden, Brooklyn, Emma, Jenna, Derek, Calvin and Jose.; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Killian, of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers-in-law: Roy Peterson of Mason City and special brother-in-law, Edwin Johnson of Mason City.

 

 She was preceded in death by her husband A.M. “Pete; ” her parents, two sons, Gary and Robert Peterson; two brothers, Harold and Lyle Crook; and her beloved sister: Ilene Johnson; and one great-granddaughter, Sierra.

MASON CITY — Bonnie M. (Wyborney) Plagge, 78, of 920 N. Washington Ave. in Mason City, died Sunday (March 4, 2007) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

 

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City.

Earl H. Aman


Earl H. Aman, of San Luis, Colorado, passed away Friday (March 2, 2007) in Eldora, Iowa.

 
Born on Aug. 1, 1919, in Sexton Iowa, to Gertrude Steven and Charles Aman. He was raised and educated in Kossuth County. He joined The United States Marine Corps in 1940. He served in the Pacific Theatre until 1945. After his honorable discharge, he was a carpenter until his retirement in 1995 at age 76.


He married Marjorie Quandt in 1947, and adopted Susan and David. From this union he had seven grandchildren,17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Marjorie died in 1989 in Chama, Colorado.

 

Earl married Marbella Smith in 1994. From this union he gained three stepdaughters and two stepsons- in-law, Alice and William Robinson, of Page, Ariz., Louise Urgo, of Brookline, Mass., Karen and Richard Gibbs, of Hawaii, and numerous grandchildren. Marbella died on July 31, 2007.

 

Earl returned to Iowa to live with his daughter, Susan and her husband, Gary, for a time.He then entered Eldora Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

 

He is survived by his four daughters; and three sons-in- law; a sister, Jessie Garska, of Hastings,Neb.; a brother, Thomas and his wife, Lou Ann.; and his many grandchildren.

 

He was predeceased by both of his wives; and his parents; a brother, Harold; a sister, Lulu Fisher; and his son David.

 

Earl chose cremation. His inurnment will take place in Algona in April.

Wilbert Kruse

MASON CITY — Wilbert Kruse, 94, of Mason City, died Sunday (March 4, 2007) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at the St Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell with the Rev. Ronald Bollinger presiding. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or St. Peter Lutheran Church in his memory.

Wilbert Carl Daniel Kruse was born April 22, 1912, in Mott Township northeast of Hampton, Iowa, to Louis and Louise (Schulz) Kruse. 

He attended school in Pleasant Valley School, rural Hampton and Evangelical Lutheran Church School near Beeds Lake, Hampton.

He worked as a farm hand for Albert and Ernest Heinz in rural Hampton and Bill Schoneman west of Sheffield.

Wilbert was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Kottman on April 22, 1937, in her parents’ home. They made their home farming in the Sheffield area for nine years, moving to a farm west of Hampton for three years before purchasing a farm west of Rockwell. He was a member of the Sheffield-Rockwell Creamery Board.

In 1970 they sold their farm and moved to Mason City where he was then employed by Mercy Hospital from January 1971 until retiring in 1984. Wilbert moved to Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living, Mason City, on Aug. 1, 2006.

He was a member St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, Iowa.

He is survived by two daughters, Joan (Donald) Werstein, of Clear Lake; Ethel Jean (Douglas) of Olmsted, Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren: Mark Werstein, Kevin (Nina) Werstein, Jeffrey (Kristen) Olmsted and Deborah Olmsted; six great-grandchildren: Casey, Shannon and Courtney Werstein, Jennifer and Alicia Olmsted and Braydon Wakefield. Two sisters: Esther (John) Day, of Clear Lake, and Alma Karsjens, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

Wilbert is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; parents; and two sisters, Sophie Janssen and Hilda Merfeld.

MASON CITY — Bernadine L. Lamoreux, 83, of 2220 24th St. SW, died Tuesday (March 6, 2007) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Bernadine Lillian Lamoreux was born July 11, 1923, at Britt, a daughter of George and Antonia (Fiala) Malek. She was married to Daryl Lamoreux, they had three children, Nick, Larry and Denise.

 

A graduate of Hayfield High School, Hayfield, Bernadine had lived in Mason City since 1950. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Theresa circle and a Bible study group.

 

Bernadine’s life was centered on her family. She loved her grandchildren, and looked forward to Malek family reunions. She enjoyed fishing, baking and knitting, but her passion was gardening, growing vegetables as well as flowers to decorate her home. She looked forward to quilting and attending her Wednesday morning Bible study.

 

Survivors include two sons, Nicholas Lamoreux, of Mason City; Larry (Dixie) Lamoreux, of Mason City; a daughter, Denise (Dave) Hathaway-Easley, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Nicole, Patrick, Dustyn and Dena; three great-grandchildren, Leah, Lyndsey and Tracie-Lynn; a brother, Ernie Malek, of Britt; a sister, Theresa Suby, of Forest City; sisters-in-law, Lillian Malek, of Britt, and Alice Malek, of Britt.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William and Clement Malek; and sisters, Beatrice Kofron and Agnes Wellik.

Julie A. (Ellwood) Winberg

 

ANDOVER, Minn. — Julie A. (Ellwood) Winberg, 54, died Wednesday (Feb. 28, 2007) at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minn.

 

A gathering for family and friends will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, March 7, at the Washburn-McReavy Coon Rapids Chapel.

 

Julie Ardis Ellwood was born Dec. 29, 1952 at Marshalltown, Iowa, to Ardis (Mostrom) and Stanley Ellwood. She spent her childhood in Forest City, where she graduated from high school in 1971. She then attended and graduated from Abbott-Northwestern School of Nursing in Minneapolis. For 32 years Julie was a registered nurse in the emergency room at Abbott- Northwestern. She was very capable and reliable in the charge and triage nurse positions.

 

On May 22, 1976, Julie was married to Robert (Bob) Winberg and they made their home first in Coon Rapids, then in Andover. They had two sons, Rob and Paul. Julie was a wonderful and dedicated wife and mother. She had a talent for sewing and a “can-do” will for almost any task. Julie enjoyed her bowling league for many years and recent junkets to local and Las Vegas casinos.

 

She will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Bob; sons Robert (Rob) and his wife, Brooke, of St. Paul, and Paul, of Andover; mother, Ardis Ellwood, of Forest City; sisters, Jane (Jerry) Askeland of Mason City, Janet (Patrick) Cannon, of Eden Prairie, and Joan (Dave) Hickman, of Mason City, as well as many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Ellwood.

 


 

Lester Kropp

 

GARNER — Lester Kropp, 82, of Garner, died Monday (March 5, 2007) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel.

 

Lester Kropp, the son of August and Rosa (Bredlow) Kropp, was born May 17, 1924, on a farm south of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at Liberty Methodist Church west of Klemme. He attended Liberty No. 2 country school.

 

Lester farmed with his father and brother, Orville, south of Garner until retirement. In October of 2000, he moved to Concord Care Center with his brother, Orville. He enjoyed working with cattle and planting trees and tomatoes.

 

He was a member of the Klemme United Methodist Church.

 

Lester is survived by two sisters, Hilda Bell of Garner and Viola Kropp of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Relma Finn, Neva Hartzell and Lucille Drugg; and three brothers, Gilbert, Caris “Barney” and Orville Kropp.

MASON CITY — Bonnie M. (Wyborney) Plagge, 78, of 920 N. Washington Ave. in Mason City, died Sunday afternoon (March 4, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A celebration of life memorial gathering was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City.

A memorial visitation was held from noon until the time of Bonnie’s service at 1 p.m. at the Fullerton Funeral Home.

Bonnie May Plagge was born Feb. 22, 1929, in Mason City, the daughter of Sidney Bert and Margaret Blanche (Coonrod) Wyborney. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1947.

Bonnie and Duane Plagge were united in marriage and became the proud parents of a daughter, Jeanine, and son, Gregg.

In her earlier years, Bonnie was employed at various restaurants in Mason City and at the Good Shepherd Health Center, where she worked in several departments and areas including laundry, activities director and as a direct care aide. In her leisure time, she bowled on several leagues at Lee’s Lanes in Mason City.

On April 30, 2003, in Mason City, Bonnie married Ken E. Wheeler following a 25-year engagement.

Some of Bonnie’s interests and hobbies included creating craft items, flower gardening, shopping with her grandchildren, collecting teddy bears and golfing and socializing in the annual “Hoszinski” tournament.

Bonnie’s family recall that she loved listening to music, attending and hosting family gatherings, baking, cooking, caring for her pets, watching “All My Children” and decorating and preparing for the holidays, especially Christmas. She was active in following the happenings of local politics and reading the daily newspaper. Gregg states that Bonnie was the No. 1 fan of his band, the “Deputy Dawg Band!”

Bonnie will be remembered as a woman with a big heart! She was a feisty, well-versed, giving and loving lady who easily expressed her opinions. Her greatest priority was her home and nurturing her family.

Bonnie will be cherished in the hearts of her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Ken Wheeler, of Mason City; her daughter, Jeanine and Boyd Lennie, of Plymouth; her son, Gregg and Patty Plagge, of Portland, Ore.; her two sisters, Betty Rosemeyer of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Dixie Wyborney of Temple City, Calif. Bonnie will also be dearly missed by her three grandchildren, Ambr (Jesse) Koch, Angela Shinn and James D. (Robyn) Shinn; her great-granddaughter, Haley Jo Shinn; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Bonnie in death are her parents, Sidney and Margaret Wyborney; and her first husband, Duane Plagge.

Dale C. Jones

BELMOND — Dale C. Jones, 65, most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, formerly of Rowan, died Tuesday (March 6, 2007) at the Belmond Health Care Center with his family at his side.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Day Springs Assembly Church, 208 Sixth Ave. S.W. in Belmond, with the Rev. Mark Pluff officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Belmond Military Unit will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Dale Cletus Jones, the son of Donald and Elsie Marie (Harty) Jones, was born, Dec. 21, 1941, at Iowa City. As a young child he moved with his family to the Belmond area where he attended Belmond Community Schools through the 11th grade. He later went on to work towards his GED.

Dale had served his country in the U.S. Army for a total of four years, receiving a variety of awards and commendations during his tenure.

Upon returning to civilian life following the service, he was employed for a time at the Cargill Co. in Belmond as a grain sorter and also at Winnebago Industries. Dale had worked as a truck driver with U.S. Steel for 14 years.

Dale was united in marriage to Betty Miller on Oct. 26, 1968, at the Belmond United Methodist Church. Their union was blessed with two sons, Byron and Dusty. Dale was a baptized member of the Day Springs Assembly Church in Belmond.

Dale and Betty enjoyed playing cards in the early years of their marriage. As the years went by he looked forward to taking his sons on fishing excursions to Humboldt, Marble Rock, and throughout the area in quest of his favorite walleyes, catfish, and northerns. He also enjoyed teaching them how to trap and taking them hunting for pheasants. Dale loved the outdoors and an occasional ice fishing trip. He liked to work jigsaw puzzles and had done some woodworking. He was also fond of his pet parrot “Joe.” He liked to follow NASCAR races, especially if they included his favorite driver, No. 18 Bobby Labonte.

His family and friends will remember him at times as a prankster and one who liked to pull off a practical joke from time to time.

Dale is survived by his wife, Betty Jones, of Rowan; his sons, Byron and Dusty; and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, his parents, his in-laws, numerous aunts, uncles, a nephew, Jason Moore; and brother, Tom Cordes.

Mildred Hazel (Stalheim) Kuhlmann Flugge

NORTHWOOD — Mildred Hazel (Stalheim) Kuhlmann Flugge, 94, of Northwood, died Wednesday (March 7, 2007) at the Floyd County Hospital Hospice Inpatient Unit in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood, with the Rev. Barbara Wills officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Conner Colonial Chapel and one hour prior to service time on Saturday.

Mildred Hazel (Stalheim) Kuhlmann Flugge was born on July 23, 1912, in rural Northwood, the daughter of Ole and Ida (Felay) Stalheim. She was baptized on Aug. 12, 1912, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on May 16, 1926, at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. She received her education in the Northwood Community School. She was united in marriage to Harvey Kuhlmann on Jan. 17, 1931. He preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1961.

Mildred taught Sunday school for eight years in the Shell Rock Lutheran Church, and also took care of elderly people for several years in their home in Worth County. She was united in marriage to Floyd Flugge.

She enjoyed doing crafts, embroidering, baking, playing cards, and getting together with ladies groups, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Martha Circle and was former president of the Martha Circle, and the Rachel Circle.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kalla Jean Lodge of Charles City, Audrey (Dean) Coyle of Floyd, Elton Kuhlmann and special friend, Frances Coyle, of Manly, Arthur (Dorothy) Kuhlmann, of Clear Lake; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, Harvey Kuhlmann, Mildred was also preceded in death by a daughter, Deloris Kuhlmann; two sons, Ole Fritz Kuhlmann and LuVerne Kuhlmann; grandchildren, Barbara Kuhlmann Borchert, Patrick Coyle, Penny Sue Coyle, Debra Kuhlmann and Richard Kuhlmann; a sister, Guida Kuhlmann; a son-in-law, James Lodge; and a daughter-in-law, Dora Kuhlmann.

MASON CITY — Elmer W. Edel, 88, of 2060 S. Kentucky Ave., died Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Elmer W. Edel was born Feb. 16, 1919, at Haverhill, Iowa, a son of Charles and Anna (Stalzer) Edel. He was united in marriage to Madonna Feeney on Feb. 7, 1948, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Elmer attended St. Joseph Catholic Schools, Mason City, and was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School and the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot for B-24 aircraft. Following his discharge, Elmer returned to Mason City where he began Edel Music Co., which he operated for more than 45 years, retiring in 1998.

He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He held memberships at St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Elmer is survived by three daughters, Susan (Jacob) Beck of Boulder, Colo., Ellen (Jerry) McAndrews of Lenexa, Kan., and Elizabeth (Stephen) Gales of Mason City; a son, Stephen (Cathy) Edel, of Minneapolis, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Chelsea Satter, Laura McAndrews, Patrick McAndrews, Matthew McAndrews, Mitzi McAndrews, Nicholas Gales, Jenna Gales and Julia Gales; a sister, Joan Stover, of St. Paul, Minn.; brothers-in-law, John Hofler of Nora Springs, and James (Patricia) Feeney of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Michael D. Logan 

ROCKWELL — Michael D Logan, 64, of Manito, Ill., formerly of Rockwell, passed away on Feb. 26, 2007, at Barnes Hospital in St Louis, Mo.

Memorial services were held in Manito on Saturday, March 3, at the MAAS Funeral Home with military honors presented by the Tazewell military rites team and representatives from the U. S. Navy.

Michael was born Jan. 9, 1943, to Donald and Charlotte (Clark) Logan in Rockwell. Michael married Joyce Poole in Watertown, S.D. They were later divorced. Michael married Erva Roark in Monmouth, Ill. He was in the last graduating class from Sacred Heart School in Rockwell. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked for 37 years for the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 2004.

He was a member of the American Legion Hill-Palmer Post No. 561 in Manito, Ill. He enjoyed photography, surfing the net and emailing to his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Erva Logan, of Manito, Ill.; his mother, Charlotte Halley, of Mason City; two children, Michael Douglas (Jackie) Logan of Fargo, N.D., and Tina Logan of Montana; two brothers, John (Robin) Logan of Iowa City and Robert Logan of Mason City; one sister, Beverly (Richard) Crowell, of Mason City; one uncle, Morris (Marlene) Logan, of Rockford, Ill.; three stepsons, Joe (Serena) Roark and Jim (Joyce) Wood, both of Pekin, Ill., and John Wood of Atlanta, Mo.; three grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Maria Christina Arndt was born on May 13, 1944, at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City to Joseph and Martha (Lopez) Baltierra. She was the sixth of eight children born to her parents and was baptized, made her first communion and was confirmed, all at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. Christina graduated from Mason City High School in 1962.

 

While at a drive-in in Mason City, Christina met her soul-mate and the love of her life, Dennis Lowell Arndt. Christina and Dennis were united in marriage at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City on May 8, 1965. The couple treasured any time that they could spend together, especially walking and shopping at any mall.

 

Christina was employed for the past 17 years at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. She was a nursing assistant on the 4-West-Surgical and Oncology floor at the hospital and had the privilege to train many new nursing assistants throughout the past years. Christina developed many close friendships with her co-workers and was a very hard worker.

 

Christina’s family was always her highest priority and spending time with them was her greatest joy. She was a devoted wife and homemaker and a nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved preparing for large family meals and gatherings, especially during the holidays. Christina was passionate about her grandchildren and great-grandson, relishing every precious moment she could with them!

 

Christina was a faithful member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. She is described by her family as a strong-willed and caring woman with a great sense of humor. Christina was a feisty lady with both a very fun, and yet, serious side.

 

Christina will be dearly missed by her family and all who have shared in her life.

 

She is survived by her husband, Dennis Arndt, of Mason City; her children, Andrew Arndt, Annette (Jon) King and Brian Arndt, all of Mason City; her two sisters, Lupe Flavin, of Rockford, Ill., and her twin sister, Martina (Larry) Snyder, of Mason City; and her two brothers, Joseph Baltierra, of Nampa, Idaho, and Thomas (Toni) Baltierra, of Mason City. Christina will always be cherished by her four grandchildren, Kaylyn Nicholson, Tyler Nicholson, Olivia Arndt and Deven King; her great-grandson, Alexander “A.J.” Nicholson; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Donald J. Olson

 

FOREST CITY — Donald J. Olson, 89, of Forest City, died Tuesday (March 6, 2007) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

 

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

 

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2007, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City and an hour prior to service at the church.

 

Born July 3, 1917, in Forest City, Donald John was the son of John A. and Ellen Matilda Drugg Olson. He was raised in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School in 1935. After graduation, Don attended Waldorf College and later worked in his father’s furniture store. Donald purchased the furniture store with his brother, Lloyd, in 1940.

 

On March 3, 1942, Donald began his service with the Army Air Corps. During World War II, he served as a communications supply technician for a radio signal corps, having been stationed in India and China. In 1946, Sergeant Olson received his honorable discharge and returned to Iowa, where he enrolled in a cabinet-making school in Des Moines. He then became employed by Maynard Eames Construction in Forest City.

 

On Nov. 28, 1947, he married Alpha Jean Olson in Forest City. The couple moved to Hampton, where Don was employed at the Hampton Furniture Store. In 1953, he purchased the Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store in Belmond, which he operated for 20 years. He sold the business in 1973 and worked part time for the Fullerton Lumber Co. and Meyer Brothers Construction in Belmond.

 

He later built speculation homes, delivered new Winnebago motor homes to dealers around the country and drove a school bus for the Belmond School District.

 

On May 10, 1974, Alpha Olson preceded her husband in death. Don moved back to his hometown of Forest City in 1978. On Feb. 17, 1979, he married Eva Amelsberg.

 

Don was a charter member of the Belmond Bible Church (now known as the Evangelical Free Church) and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Forest City.

 

In earlier years he found great success as a pitcher in the Belmond Church Softball League. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, playing checkers and card games. He especially loved spending time with his family.

 

Survivors include his wife, Eva, of Forest City; three daughters, Anita (Jim) Davids, of Urbandale, Jennifer (Steve) Brown, of Fort Dodge, and Wendy Schulte, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; two sons, Kevin (Robin) Olson, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Tim (Sally) Olson, of Mt. Pleasant; a stepson, Jim (Lorraine) Amelsberg, of Forest City; a stepdaughter, Julie (Alan) Steiff, of Brainerd, Minn.; eight grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Esther Trail of Roselle, Ill., along with numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

 

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Alpha; one sister, Dorothy Westerberg; and a brother, Lloyd Olson.

Betty F. Tiedman

 

LAKE MILLS — Betty F. Tiedman, 77, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday (March 6, 2007) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, March 9, 2007, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor Audrey Young officiating. Burial will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills.

 

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St., Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services today at the church.

 

Betty Florence (Bergland) Tiedman was born May 27, 1929, the daughter of Walter and Evelyn (Charlson) Bergland, on a farm near Joice, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Joice. Betty attended country schools, went to Hanlontown High School for three years, and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1947. She went on to attend and graduate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, after which Betty taught first grade in Thompson for five years.

 

On Nov. 19, 1953, Betty was united in marriage with Donald Tiedman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After her marriage, Betty was a homemaker and helped Don keep the farm running. She always had hot coffee in the pot and plenty of goodies to eat.

 

Betty was always on the go — working with her flowers, doing embroidery work, cooking for family and friends, and she was an active member at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills. She made the best lemon meringue pie in the world, completely from scratch. Her hobbies included golfing, gardening and drinking coffee with her friends. Betty’s favorite pastime was making life-history scrapbooks for her two sons and four grandchildren.

 

Betty and Don were avid Iowa Hawkeye fans, watching every game possible. She loved to travel, and her favorite trip was with Don, her sister, Ruth, and Roger Hermanson to Washington, D.C., three years ago.

 

Betty is survived by her husband, Donald; two sons, Dan (Sonja) Tiedman and Dave (Carol) Tiedman, all of Lake Mills; four grandchildren, Sara, Mick, Josh and Casey Tiedman, all of Lake Mills; two sisters, Ruth Hermanson and her husband, Roger, of Lake Mills, and Rachel Gillmann and her husband, Don, of Lincoln City, Ore.; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Bob) Hallstrom and Bernice Wehman; brother-in-law, Les Tiedman; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Evelyn Bergland; and her brother, Wallace Bergland.

Richard Dean Ausenhus

 

NORTHWOOD — Richard Dean Ausenhus, 77, of Northwood, died Tuesday (March 6, 2007) at his home in Northwood.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 Ninth St., Northwood, with the Rev. Barbara Wills officiating. Interment will take place at the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

 

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 9, 2007, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Hwy 65 South in Northwood. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

 

Richard Dean Ausenhus was born on Oct. 28, l929, in Kensett, Iowa, to Norton and Olga (Reierson) Ausenhus. Dean served in the Korean War. He married Shirley Rowe on Aug. 25, l957, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett.

 

Dean was one of the owners of the Davey & Moen Construction. After leaving the Davey & Moen Construction, Dean and Shirley purchased the Village Florist in Northwood. They continued with the Village Florist for some 30 years until their retirement.

 

Dean was known for his civic work in Northwood and also his interests in genealogy. He had a great love for gardening and flowers.

 

One of his greatest joys were his grandchildren and attending their various activities.

 

Dean is survived by his wife Shirley; children, Brice and his wife, Dawn Ausenhus, of Nora Springs, and Melissa Thoms and her husband, Bob, of Mason City; grandchildren, Alex and Blake Ausenhus, Danya and Austin Thoms; sister, Grace Johnson, of Marshfield, Wis.; sister and brother-in law, Janet and Al Heinz, of Mason City; niece and nephews, Stan and Kathy Borchert, Karen Johnson, Janelle and Ken Petersen, Fred Heinz and Cheri Ross.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Walter J. Johnson.

Gladys Mary Seaberg

WESLEY — Funeral services for Gladys Mary Seaberg, 92, of Algona, formerly of Wesley, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, at the Evangelical Free Church in Wesley with Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Wesley.

Gladys Mary Seaberg was born on Aug. 5, 1914, in Clark County, rural Elrod, S.D., to William and Bessie Arthur McElmurray. She attended country school and graduated from Clark High School in 1932. Gladys was baptized at the age of 12 at the Church of Christ in South Dakota.

After her schooling, Gladys helped at her parents’ home until Sept. 12, 1936, when she was married to George Seaberg. The couple lived on a rented farm in Elrod Township during the severe drought years of 1936 and 1937. They were active in their church, where Gladys taught Sunday school and helped with various activities.

In the spring of 1938, an uncle, Peter Seaberg, purchased a farm in Iowa so his nephew and family could move to Iowa. The Seabergs and a small son, David, moved to a farm in the Doan Church community. The Seabergs attended the Evangelical Free Church in Wesley, Iowa, and were very active and faithful in attendance. She taught Sunday school and held various offices in church, Sunday School and W.M.S. She also sang in the church choir. Gladys was a member of the Wesley Township Homemaker’s Club for many years.

She enjoyed living in the Doan neighborhood and enjoyed family and church get-togethers, shopping, cooking, gardening, drawing, doing some traveling and visiting her many friends.

In the spring of 2000, Gladys moved to an apartment in Algona at Van Buren Terrace, where she met many new friends. In March 2006, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Communities in Algona. She died there on Thursday, March 8, 2007, at the age of 92.

Gladys is survived by her children, David Seaberg and wife, Ann, of Osprey, Fla., Dwight Seaberg of Wesley, Philip Seaberg and wife, Jane, of Garner, and Judith Van Hove and husband, Robert, of Buffalo Center. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Linnea Snook, of Green Valley, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George; an infant granddaughter, Jennifer; her daughter-in-law, Virginia Seaberg; two sisters, Daisy McElmurray and Edna Skow; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Seaberg, and Ruth Simpson and many nieces and nephews.

Willmer Glen Ingersoll

MASON CITY — Willmer Glen Ingersoll, 78, of Mason City, died Thursday (March 8, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jeni Bohls officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth with military rites by the Manly American Legion Post No. 110.

Willmer Glen Ingersoll, the son of Frank and Emma (Krueger) Ingersoll, was born June 25, 1928, at Plymouth. He attended school at Rock Falls. Glen served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic from January 1952 to January 1954. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to Plymouth and farmed.

On June 14, 1954, he was married to Mary Majewski at Plymouth. They farmed near Little Cedar where they raised their two daughters, Cindy and Nancy. In 1994, Mary passed away. On June 6, 1999, Glen married Delores Daugard at the First Lutheran Church in Britt. They made their home near Mason City.

Glen enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, dancing, gardening, playing the harmonica and was an avid boxing fan.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City and was active in the Mason City Senior Center.

Glen is survived by his wife, Delores, of Mason City; two daughters, Cindy (Jerry) Hoffman of Little Cedar and Nancy (Joel) Rollins of Claremont, Minn.; three grandsons, Shaun Hoffman and Cole and Clay Rollins; his parents-in-law, Andy and Mildred Majewski of Nora Springs; five stepchildren, Laurie (Sam) Athanasiou of Garner, Kenny (Pam) Russell of Lee Center, Minn., Jeff (special friend, Laurie) Dahle of Britt, Kevin (Kathy) Dahle of Benbrook, Texas and Shelly (Brad) Frein of Garner; 11 stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; four sisters, Naomi Ingersoll of Plymouth, Leola Wilde of St. Ansgar, Irene Bublitz of Charles City and Fay (Dave) Thompson of Rio Rancho, N.M.; a brother, Bill (Bernice) Ingersoll, of Old Town, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Maryparents; a brother and sister-in-infancy; two sisters, Elaine Deets and Elsie Ingersoll; and two brothers, Everett and Wayne Ingersoll.

Glen was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, and brother. He will be dearly missed by everyone.

Jewell R. Losee

RICEVILLE — Jewell R. Losee Jr., of Riceville, died Wednesday (March 7, 2007) at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was 56 years of age.

Jewell Robert Losee was born on April 27, 1950, in Riceville, the son of Jewell and Violet (Huntley) Losee. He was a 1969 graduate of Riceville High School. At present he was employed for R & S Grain Systems of Dexter, Minn. He raced stock cars in Northeast Iowa and Southern Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby; three children, Shawn (friend Lacy Shea) of Riceville, Shannon Losee of Riceville, and Joel of Northwood; his father, Jewell, of McIntire; three grandchildren; seven brothers, Ken (Virginia) of Norwalk, Tom (Deloris) of Winterset, Larry (Jane) Losee of Stewartville, Minn., Garry (Cindy) of LeRoy, Minn., Darrell (friend Lisa) of Lime Springs, Scott and Richard, both of Riceville; and two sisters, Deanna Huemann of Stacyville and Darla Roher, of Riceville.

Cheryl L. Deike

MASON CITY — Cheryl L. Deike, 61, of 20 S. Taft Ave., died Thursday (March 8, 2007) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at the Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 W. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Cheryl was born Aug. 11, 1945, in Mason City, the daughter of Ellsworth and Mary Elizabeth (Keeney) Helm. Cheryl attended school at Popejoy and graduated from Alden High School in 1963, then attended Upper Iowa College in Fayette. She worked at Mercy Hospital as an aide.

Cheryl married Roger Deike, Sept. 23, 1967, in Mason City and they lived in the Clear Lake area. Cheryl and Roger raised two children.

She enjoyed attending school activities and sporting events. She was always in the stands, cheering on her two children and many “extra” children. She was a second mother to many.

Cheryl loved her dogs, reading, gardening, fishing and camping with her family, rides in the country, and watching her grandchildren.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Roger Deike, of Mason City; two children, Joyce Deike and her husband, Scott Smed, of Mason City, and Mark Deike and his wife, Jodi, of Iowa City, and their three children, Elisabeth, Katie and Sam Deike; her father, Ellsworth Helm, of Popejoy; two sisters, Carol (Tom) Vanderloop and Becky (Carroll) Kalous, both of Alden; sisters and brothers-in-law, Fonda Hickethier, of Alden, Don (Carol) Deike of Clear Lake, Lola (Frank) Barrick of Center Point, Jim (Mildred) Deike of Greene, Leroy (Lois) Deike of Mason City, Waneta (Ray) Leege of Odebolt, Marlin (Diane) Deike of Mason City, Evonne (Dale) Lents of Winterset, and Al (Sue) Deike of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald Ray Wyborny

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. — Donald Ray Wyborny, 88, of Mountain Home, Ark., passed away Thursday (March 8, 2007) at the hospice care center in Mountain Home.

Don was the youngest of six boys born to Edward and Lulu (Witham) Wyborny in Mason City on March 28, 1918. As a youth he attended two country schools in the Mason City and Portland areas, later graduating from Mason City High School.

Growing up on the farm, Don continued throughout his life with the same passion for planting , harvesting, and providing food for family and friends.

He married Lucile (Nelson) July 16, 1941, and lived in Kensett where he was a mechanic. Returning to his love for farming they lived and farmed around Plymouth and Grafton while working the fall and winter months at the sugar beet factory.

In 1958, Don owned and operated the Oliver Implement in Thompson. From 1965 to 1980, Don was the chief pilot and service manager for Hagie Manufacturing in Clarion.

Upon retiring from Hagie’s in 1980, Don and his wife moved to Mountain Home, Ark., to enjoy many hours of fishing and the great pleasure of growing both peach and nectarine trees in his orchard.

Don’s great mechanical and design skills also gave him many hours of pleasure for himself and friends and family needing repairs. One such fond memory is the tractor and wagon he built in which his children and grandchildren could tour his orchard and the vast yard he maintained on Whoopy Hill.

Donald Ray Wyborny is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucile; two daughters, Ginny Blakley of Arkansas, and Ronda Condi of Utah; and a son, Paul Wyborny, of Oklahoma. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a brother, Kenny.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ed; mother Lulu; and brothers, Ed, Harold, Morris and Roy.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 12, in Mountain Home with burial at a later date in the Plymouth Cemetery.

He will be greatly missed for his humor, wit, vast knowledge, and numerous stories past and present.

 


Alan Sonne

CHARLES CITY — Alan Sonne, 57, of Charles City, died Friday (March 9, 2007) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services for Alan Sonne will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor David Werges officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, and visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Alan Harry Sonne was born July 9, 1949, at Charles City, the son of Edward and Virginia (Jaeger) Sonne. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1968. On Sept. 15, 1984, he was united in marriage to Kathy Smith. Alan farmed in the Charles City area all of his life and was also a seed dealer for Dairyland Seed.

He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Farm Bureau and the Cattleman’s Association. Alan will be remembered for his inventive genius as a welder and repairman who was more than willing to tackle any job.

Living family members include his wife, Kathy, of Charles City; his father and stepmother, Edward and Edith Sonne, of Charles City; a sister, Nancy (Mark) Scherer, of Cambridge, Minn.; two stepbrothers, Jim (Karen) Korinke of Overland Park, Kan., and David Korinke and Diana of Knoxville; a stepsister, Sandra (Jim) Lawrenz, of Rockford; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Sandra JoAnn (Harmon) Hove, died Sunday (March 4, 2007) at Hospice in Minneapolis of ALS.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at the Grace UMC in northeast Minneapolis.

Sandra was born Dec. 12, 1941, in Sheffield, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Luella Harmon. She graduated from Sheffield High School in 1960. She attended college in Minneapolis and later worked in the insurance business. She was very active in her church, the bell choirs and singing. She also served as a youth leader for her church.

Sandra is survived by her husband, Ken Hove; and two daughters, Andrea and Janet; and three grandchildren. She is also survived by three stepchildren, six stepgrandchildren, and one stepgreat-grandchild. She is also survived by three sisters, Eva Mae Long, Florence Frey, MaryAnne Hendrickson; one brother, Donald Harmon; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers-in-law.

SHEFFIELD — Chris Horstman, 94, of Sheffield, died Thursday (March 8, 2007) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield with the Rev. Kent A. Mechler presiding. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery rural Sheffield.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home.

BUFFALO CENTER — Esther Thompson, 99, of Buffalo Center, died Thursday (March 8, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until time of services at the church.
