Clement Weiss was born in Kansas City, Kan., late in the day on Oct. 31, 1915. His parents, Catherine and William, who wanted his birth date to be All Saints Day, convinced the doctor to use Nov. 1, 1915, as his actual birth date.

He was united in marriage to Marie DeWeerdt on Aug. 29, 1939, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner, Iowa, with Fr. Matt Manternach officiating.

Clement and Marie were jobless and didn’t have “doodly swap,” but were very much in love and optimistic that they could build a life together through commitment and hard work. They lived in Britt for a year, then moved to Mason City, where Clement made a living as a salesman, an owner of the Cerro Gordo Maytag Company, and as president of Home Insulation Company.

Clement and Marie were blessed with 10 beautiful children and their families. Clem and Marie’s children include their sons and daughters-in-law, whom were loved by Clem as if they were his own. Their children are Marlene (Paul) Weber, Phoenix, Ariz., Linda (Mike) Kennedy, New Hampton, David (Ann), Ankeny, Connie (Fred) Barry, Lincoln, Neb., Tom (Ann), Des Moines, Susan (Patrick) Lang, Ankeny, Michael (deceased), Daniel (Susan), Des Moines, Steve (Ann), Mason City, and Jeffrey (Tangela), Des Moines. Clem was especially fond of “the little ones,” his “blonde bombshells,” his “teeny boppers,” including his grandchildren, Mara Weber, Paula (Robert) Kufrovich, Cara (Jackson) Kennedy-Ode, Matthew (Andrea) Weiss, Heidi Weiss, Greta (Nathan) Weiss, Justin (Kim) Johanns, Michaela (Joseph) Young, Jason Rumbaugh, Sarah (Ryan) McKenna, Lindsay Lang, Simon and Hannah Weiss, Isaac, Luke and Catherine Weiss, Maya, Kali and Camille Weiss, and his great-grandchildren, Arianna Johnson, Brittany Johnson, Taylor and Michael Kufrovich, Michael, William, and Jack Ode, Chloe and Skye Weiss-Streeter, Karly and Kate Weiss, Charlie Crane, Burkett, Noelle and Olivia Johanns, Kylan Young, Avery McKenna, and his special grandchild, Colton Shimak.

Clement was especially blessed with his wife of 67 years, his “little country girl” Marie, who cared so lovingly for him for all of his years, especially in the last few weeks of his life.

Also surviving are Clement’s brothers, Bill, Frank, and John; and his sisters, Pauline Gerk and Catherine Faulken.

Clement was preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine Weiss; his son, Michael; his brothers, Jake, Ed and Joe; and his sister, Philomena.

Clement was an active supporter of St. Joseph’s Church and Newman Catholic Schools. Despite only completing school through the fourth grade, he was proud of being instrumental in the capital campaign that financed Newman High School in 1962 and in making a lead gift in the 2002 campaign to build Newman Elementary.

Clement’s family would like to extend deep appreciation for the kindness shown by the caregivers at Hospice and the many friends who cared for him during his illness.
