Wayne
Lee
Escherich
SILOAM
SPRINGS,
Ark. —
Wayne
Lee
Escherich
was born
on Dec.
7, 1941,
to
Reuben
and Anna
(Arnevik)
Escherich.
He
passed
away on
Saturday
(Oct. 7,
2006) at
Siloam
Springs
Memorial
Hospital
in
Siloam
Springs,
Ark.
Wayne
graduated
from
Lake
Mills
High
School
and
continued
to live
in
Scarville,
Iowa,
with his
family
until
1985. He
owned
and
operated
the
Scarville
grocery
store
and a
small
snowmobile
dealership.
He then
farmed
for
several
years
before
driving
truck
full
time in
1984. He
eventually
moved to
Arkansas
and
became
owner
and
operator
of a
trucking
company
called
Anderson
Produce.
Wayne
was
committed
to this
business,
its
customers,
drivers
and
employees.
A happy
day in
Wayne’s
life was
Feb. 14,
2004,
when he
married
Peggy
Ruth
Davis.
He was a
truly
wonderful
husband
and
friend
to
Peggy,
and
together
they
shared a
lot of
love and
laughs.
Wayne
enjoyed
his time
with
Peggy,
family
and
friends
more
than
anything.
Wayne
was
amazing
to watch
with
children.
The
interest
he
showed
in them
was
genuine
and they
made
fast
friends
with
him. It
was
never
too hot
for him
to play
outside
(cowboy
boots
and all)
nor too
hard on
the
floor to
play
along
and talk
with
them
about
toys.
Though
Wayne
was
known
for how
hard he
worked
and the
little
time he
took for
himself,
he
pursued
some fun
hobbies,
too.
While
living
in
Scarville,
he raced
snowmobiles
and
participated
in
tractor
pulls.
He
admired
hot-rods
cars and
enjoyed
watching
auto
racing.
Dale
Earnhardt
Sr. was
his
NASCAR
favorite.
Rock ‘n’
roll
music
from the
’50s and
’60s was
the
music he
liked.
He
enjoyed
walking
several
miles
each
day,
working
in his
yard and
most of
all,
talking
with his
neighbors
who he
liked so
much.
Those
left to
honor
his
memory
are his
wife,
Peggy
Escherich;
his
children,
Randy
Escherich
and
wife,
Renee,
of
Kiester,
Minn.;

Escherich
and

Lisa, of
Ankeny;

Texas;
and

of Fort
Hood,
Texas;
the
grandchildren
he
cherished,
Johnathan,
Jacob,
Chris,
Beth
Ann,
Andrea,

Samuel,
Anna,
Tianna,
Brayden,
Dustin,
Sidney
and John
Carl;

Jim;

Escherich
Jr. and

William D. Killpack
MASON CITY —William D. Killpack, 82, of 1830 Springview Drive, died Monday (Oct. 9, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. Private family inurnment services will be held in the Memorial Park Cemetery Columbarium, Mason City
There will be no visitation.
Bill Killpack was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Persia, Iowa, parents are James M. and Dorothy H. Killpack. His father was in the bank in Persia, and with the changes in banking at that time, he moved east to find opportunities.
Bill graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1941 and with his interest in farming and agriculture, he enrolled in Iowa State College to study animal husbandry. When he failed his physical for the Army Air Corps, he decided to postpone his college and learn first hand more about Aberdeen Angus cattle and that business. He worked for some outstanding Angus herds and had a good apprentice experience with the Leachman Brothers.
In the fall of 1944, Bill decided to return to Iowa State College to complete his education and continue in the Angus cattle business. He was very active on the campus, joined the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and served as president in his senior year. His other campus activities included Cardinal Key and Alpha Zeta honorees, Agriculture Council and Block and Bridle Club.
In the spring of 1946, he met Lucille Saunders and they were engaged with plans to get married on July 12 after Lucille completed her degree in home economics education. After graduation, Bill started showing Angus cattle for Wilton Farms, and secured a job as herdsman for White Gates Farms in Flanders, N.J. Lucille and Bill were married at the LaGrange Christian Church as planned. After fitting and showing Angus at major shows in 1959, he was named “Herdsman of the Year” at the International Livestock Show 1959. After developing strong allergies to livestock, Bill was forced to change occupations and joined his father in banking at The Geauga County National Bank in Chardon, Ohio.
Six children were born to Lucille and Bill, they are Kathlyn, Sandra, William, Robert, David and Richard. After working in banks in Ohio and New Jersey, he had an opportunity to return to Iowa in 1972 where he was elected an officer of the United Home Bank, and he retired as executive vice president in 1989.
Bill and Lucille were very active in Mason City and members of the First United Methodist Church. Bill served on the board of the North Iowa Medical Center for 15 years. Rotary has been a very important part of their lives, Bill was president of the Rotary Club of Mason City, served as the governor of Rotary District 5970 1989-90. After retiring from the bank in ’89, he joined the North Iowa Medical Center to help develop and market The Willows, a senior housing complex close to the hospital. After completing that task, Bill accepted an opportunity to work for the NIACC Foundation with the challenges of establishing the Alumni Association and raising money. In three and a half years, the NIACC Alumni Association was active with a working board and many projects. In 1994, First Citizens National Bank made plans to move their charter and headquarters to Mason City. This provided another opportunity for Bill to work in the bank and was made vice president of business development and retired December 2000. With his interest in The Music Man Square, he worked as assistant executive director until September 2002.
Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., in Mason City.

Oliver Lawrence Gregerson
Oliver Lawrence Gregerson passed away at his home Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2006) after an extended illness. Oliver was born in Mason City, Iowa, on April 17, 1925, to Laura and Ole Gregerson, who immigrated to Iowa from Norway around the turn of the century.
Oliver’s post-Depression childhood in Mason City was idyllic for a boy who loved the outdoors, and he spent his time hunting and fishing for food, and trapping to earn pocket money. His lifelong passion for birds and animals began in childhood when he started keeping and raising pigeons, and except for the interruption of World War II, he kept pigeons his entire life.
At the age of 18, Oliver was inducted into the US Army. He served his country during World War II in northern France as a demolition expert in the 324th Infantry Regiment. He was honorably discharged with several decorations including two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. The trauma of the war never left him and he felt worse about the experience as he got older.
In 1945, after the war, Oliver moved to Idaho to live with his father in sparsely populated Garden City. He built his first house on 43rd Street, under what is now the Curtis Extension.
Oliver later purchased 100 acres of what was then considered wasteland along the Boise River, east of Boise above Barber Dam, where he started a sand and gravel operation. He built his second house there and lived in that house the rest of his life, spending in all, 61 years in the Boise Valley. He maintained the river property as a sanctuary for both the native wildlife and the ever-growing menagerie of birds and animals he acquired. In the 1970s, he was pivotal in persuading the Fish and Game Department to close the entire Barber Pool area to hunting.
Besides his various business operations, as a young man Oliver was very involved in the Boise Jaycees and other civic enterprises in the community. He also pursued his many passions besides birds and animals, including photography, sand-painting, flower-gardening, writing, travel and mining. He was particularly interested in regional history, geography, and geology, and had extensive knowledge of the history of the Boise Valley. In his later years, he had been documenting and promoting the story of Marie Dorion, the wife of a fur trapper killed in the Boise Valley in the 1800s.
Before his physical health failed, Oliver maintained many mining claims around Silver City, Idaho City and Atlanta, Idaho, and he loved going to the mountains in search of precious metals.
Oliver married Martha Jean Chrestesen of Weiser, Idaho in 1964 and they had one daughter, Gina. Jean worked for United Airlines long enough to enable the couple to travel half-price anywhere United flew, so they took two trips a year out of the U.S., and had great adventures in Scandinavia, Europe, Australia, Japan, South America and Africa.
Anyone who knew Oliver knows he loved a good legal battle, and through the years he engaged in many contests in the courts, on the local, state and federal levels, over the issues he cared about, especially property rights, poorly planned development, and wildlife conservation. Although he would have rather spent his time otherwise, these conflicts kept him active and impassioned to the end.
Oliver lived a full and interesting life and will be greatly missed.
Oliver was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean; and siblings, Clarice and Arnold.
Oliver is survived by his loving companion of 26 years, Mai Spoljaric (Boise); his daughters, Gina (Boise) and Melissa, and her husband, Ray, and their three children Kylee, Ashley, and Alex (all of Shoshone, Idaho). As his grandchildren, Kylee, Ashley, and Alex were much-loved by Oliver. Also surviving are his sister, Gertrude (Ontario, Ore.) and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel in Boise, with interment to follow at Joplin Cemetery, also in Boise. It is a great honor that the service will be officiated by Oliver’s longtime friend and childhood neighbor, the Chaplain Ray Holder, who resides with his wife, Helen, in Newberg, Ore.
A public viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave., Boise, ID 83706.
