Louis Dirksen
ALEXANDER — Louis Dirksen, age 95, a rural Alexander native and life-long farmer, formerly of rural Alexander and Belmond, died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2006) at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the First Reformed Church of Alexander. The Reverend Phillip Arnold will be officiating. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 20, at Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services Saturday at church.
Louis Dirksen, the son of Dirk and Yettie (Pals) Dirksen, was born March 27, 1911, on a farm in rural Alexander, Iowa. He attended rural Alexander Country Schools until he began his lifelong vocation of farming, assisting his parents with their farming operation.
On Dec. 15, 1938, he was united in marriage to Marie Kuhlers. The couples’ marriage was blessed with two children, Robert and Karen.
Following their marriage, the couple farmed together and raised their children in rural Alexander. Louis was a very meticulous and hardworking farmer who enjoyed working the earth and reaping the bounties of the harvest. He taught his family and grandsons the importance of weed-free fields and taking pride in one’s work. Louis raised livestock, including black and white beef cattle. In 1957 he received a Champion Award from the Franklin County Fair in the Fat Steer Division. He had also won a competition in Hampton for handpicking corn.
Louis took great pleasure and pride in caring and working with his work horses. As the years progressed, it wasn’t uncommon for Louis to invent various pieces of equipment to help ease the tasks and chores at hand. He was never afraid to move on with the progress and technology of the day.
In 1979, he and his wife moved into Belmond from the farm and enjoyed the friendships made during their lives in town. Though they had moved from the farm to town, it was not unusual to find Louis on the farm helping with the chores, checking out what was going on with the operations, or just mowing and caring for the yards and buildings in which he had taken such great pride. Many of the buildings on the farm were built with his hands and the hands of his other Dirksen relatives, who have constructed numerous buildings and homes throughout the area.
The Dirksen family farm has been recognized as a Century Farm.
Throughout his life, Louis was a devoted and dedicated member of the First Reformed Church, where he was a very active member of the church serving on its consistory, as a deacon and an elder, and as a Sunday School Superintendent.
After Louis and Marie moved into town, they enjoyed the ’60s Club activities where Louis enjoyed playing pool and cards. The two also had taken numerous senior trips to Canada and they had taken a trip to Washington, D.C..
Those who knew Louis, including his family, will remember him as a kind and patient gentleman who always made time for others. He loved a good conversation and was always there to lend a hand if needed. He loved family gatherings and a good conversation.
His children and grandchildren fondly reflect back on special times spent with Grandpa and Grandma learning how to drive the old pickup truck and being taught how to drive the farm machinery, first learning on a modified lawn mower and trailer and then moving on to the larger machinery. They cherish the precious times spent on the farm during the summers, sitting on the back porch with Grandpa plinking the cupola of the barn with BB guns, working side-by-side with him in the bean fields, or doing other farming chores. They will look back on the many family journeys to the Iowa State Fair and the Ice Follies.
Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, on June 24, 1999. Following her passing he continued to live in their home in Belmond, before moving to the Care Center in New Hampton five years ago to be near his daughter, Karen. During his years there he enjoyed the activities at the facility and friendships of the staff and residents. His gentleness, friendly smile and personality they, too, will miss.
Louis’ memory and legacy will be fondly cherished by his daughter, Karen, and husband, LeRoy, Bobst, New Hampton; a brother, Dirk, and wife, Grace, Dirksen, Alexander; a sister, Jennie DeWaard, Kanawha; his grandsons, Jeff, and wife, Twyla, Bobst, Waverly, and their children, Jessica, Dana, Erin and Kari Bobst, and Justin, and wife, Lonna, Bobst, and their children, Jeremie and Lea Bobst. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie, on June 24, 1999; a son, Robert, on Dec. 24, 1987; a brother, Jelto Dirksen; and two sisters, Grace Modderman and Clara Lauritzen.
