Lloyd John Schaer, the son of John Andrew and Sophie Henrietta (Smith) Schaer, was born near Rockwell on Sept. 30, 1929. He was the fifth of seven children born to his parents. At the age of four, Lloyd moved with his family to Mason City.

During Lloyd’s early adult years, he assisted local farmers in the area and was employed at Northwestern Portland Cement Co. (Holcim).

In February 1951, Lloyd was inducted into the U.S. Army and committed himself to the service of his country for the next two years. After honorably and faithfully serving his country during the Korean War, Lloyd was formally discharged from his duties in January 1953. He continued to serve as an Army reservist until April 1957.

Upon returning from his military duties, Lloyd returned to his position at Portland Cement Co., resumed his work with area farmers and met the love of his life, Dixie Yvonne Cree, at a dance at the Moose Lodge in Mason City. Lloyd and Dixie dated for six years and were united in marriage on Dec. 16, 1959, at the Grace Baptist Church in Mason City.

In their earlier years, Lloyd and Dixie treasured their time together, especially road hunting pheasants, dancing the two-step, going to the movies and watching westerns. They became the proud and busy parents of three daughters.

Some of Lloyd’s favorite activities and hobbies included fishing and vegetable gardening, and he was known to share the reaps of his harvest with other relatives and friends. He and Dixie would gather the pears and grapes from their yard and after Dixie canned the fruits into jams and jelly, Lloyd would give many of the jars away.

Lloyd was an avid fan of WWE Wrestling on Monday Night “RAW” and loved the color blue. His greatest joy was his love, care and concern for his wife, daughters and grandchildren.

Lloyd is described as a fun person, a non-complainer, a teaser and a man who had a wonderful sense of humor and keen wit.

Prior to Lloyd’s retirement in 1986, after 38 years of employment at Portland Cement Co., he began farming for himself near Clear Lake. He thoroughly enjoyed raising livestock and the labors and tasks of farming. He officially retired in 1998 due to ill health.

Lloyd was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and VFW Post No. 733 in Mason City and a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.
