Catherine B. Barkema
GOODELL — Catherine B. Barkema, 71, of Goodell, passed away Thursday, (Oct. 19, 2006) following a 3½-year courageous battle with leukemia.
Funeral services for Catherine Belle Barkema will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell. The Rev. Paddy Druhl will officiate. Burial will take place in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.
Visitation for Catherine Belle Barkema will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. The family wishes memorial donations for Catherine be directed toward the Goodell United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Catherine Belle Barkema, the daughter of Paul and Ina Mae (Burgess) Halfpop, was born on Feb. 16, 1935, on the family farm in Avery Township and continued to live her entire life in the Goodell area. She graduated from Goodell High School in 1952. On Sept. 26, 1953, she was united in marriage to Dick Barkema Jr. at the EUB Church in Goodell. To this union four children were born. Catherine helped Dick with the farm until his retirement, at which time they enjoyed spending summers in Walker, Minn., and winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. Catherine attended the United Methodist Church in Goodell and is remembered as a woman of strong faith.
Catherine was a skilled porcelain artist and a member of the Iowa and World China Painters Guild. Painting and sewing the intricate clothes for the porcelain dolls she made was just one of her many talents. She enjoyed sewing anything from a complicated hardanger piece to Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. Cooking was another of her great joys of which family and friends reaped the benefits. There was always a cookie in the cookie jar at Grandma’s house.
Two of her favorite joys were her grandchildren and shopping. Put the two together at any given time and at the end of the day there were always stories to share and memories to hold. She loved the holidays and having all of her family around her on those special occasions.
Catherine loved the outdoors and the simple things that life had to offer. She would take any opportunity to go for a walk in the woods, whether it was mushroom hunting, gathering nuts, fishing in the river, or just picking a bouquet of wild flowers. Roasting a hot dog over an open fire was something she never tired of.
Left to cherish Catherine’s memory are her husband, Dick Jr.; children, Barbara Schaefer, Goodell, Keith (Sharon), Klemme, Mark (Nancy), Goodell, and Dick A. (Tammy), Klemme; eight grandchildren, Lisa Schaefer, Tim Barkema, Mindy (Chad) Seifried, Marcus, Michelle, Amanda, Cassandra and Taylor Barkema; a brother, Bernard Halfpop, Fairmont, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, Megan and Marissa Barkema, and a sister-in-law, Harriet Halfpop.
